IPhoto 08 and Photoshop - suggestions on workflow and managing PSD files

Hi Everyone,
I'm a long-time Photoshop user, and a recent convert to Mac (BTW - I love my new Mac), therefore I am also new to iPhoto 08. I must say that I actually enjoy how iPhoto manages my pictures, as it is not all that different from how I've been managing my pics manually for years (by year, by event, etc.). I've read the various discussion topics on how to set up and use Photoshop as an external editor from iPhoto, and have not had any problems up to now.
I'm now looking for suggestions on workflow and managing my PSD files. I apologize if this is a little long, but I want to make sure I explain the problem clearly. Here's the scenario:
- From iPhoto, I choose to edit an existing JPEG file in the external editor, Photoshop.
- I perform my edits (including advanced edits with layers etc.)
- I do both a "Save As..." and a "Save". That way, I "Save" the flattened JPEG back to my iPhoto library properly, and "Save As..." a PSD file in case I want to do further edits on the image later (days, weeks, months later).
I'm looking for suggestions on where to put my PSDs. For now, I am saving the PSD to my desktop (using max compatibility), and then importing the PSD into my iPhoto library (into the same Event as the original JPEG). However, this leaves me with 2 copies of the same picture: 1 JPEG, and 1 PSD.
The problem is, I now want to go back and do more tweaks on the PSD, the end result of which will make the JPEG version out-of-date. I can either
1) Open both the PSD and JPEG versions at the same time, tweak the PSD, then copy and paste the flattened layers on top of the JPEG version and "Save"
2) Open only the PSD, tweak, and save a copy as a JPEG onto my desktop and re-import into iPhoto.
Although a little tedious, both options seem to work. Are there any other options? What do you suggest? I'm curious to see how others manage this.

I don't have a solution for you (sorry) but I'd like to comment because I'm in a similar boat. However instead of saving PSD files to the desktop, I've been advised to save these to TIFF format in Photoshop by a professioal photographer friend of mine (I think he feels its a more universal file format than PSD for archival purposes). The downside is the files are huge.
I imported high resolution jpegs into iPhoto. I then use Photoshop to edit and save the flattened jpeg version back to iPhoto (thankfully, keywords are preserved this way). I recently realized that I need to save a copy of the edited file in a lossless format like TIFF or PSD. Unfortunately when I save the file to TIFF and import it back into iPhoto, keywords are lost. This is a drag.
What I am trying to figure out is how I can retain my keyword info in the edited archival version. Any tips?
I'm beginning to question whether I should import my photos in to Photoshop (or PS Bridge) first, save the original for archival purposes, do the majority of editing and save a TIFF/PSD file and then import this file into iPhoto for keywording, further editing, downsizing, etc.

How can I STOP iTunes from automatically trying to add podcasts to my iPod when I plug it in and sync it, so I can manage the files? I have already unchecked "Sync Podcasts" and "Automatically include,"yet EVERY time I sync it,it still transfers podcasts as the last step, and at other times randomly, when trying to just add some MP3's to a playlist, for example.  I can't seem to find any other option to uncheck, and can't find an answer from my so-far internet searching.

erict, you blew me away with that suggestion! It was something so simple I couldnt believe I hadnt thought of it! But in the end it didn't work, which I was really surprised about. On Windows anytime anything was moved itunes was hoplessly lost, but on this mac it still kept up with everything. I tried renaming folders, moving folders, and even renaming moved folders but it still kept trying to import.
I even went as far as deleting EVERYTHING i had moved to the Mac, which didnt really work. It still kept trying to import what wasnt there which made it continue to freeze up. However, after doing this it, the freezing was not nearly as bad. It gave me enough of a break to cancel it through the itunes dialog box at the top of the app. So in the end, thats all I really needed to do, only before I had deleted everything the freezing would not allow me to do it.
So now Im reimporting everything again, only slowly, and only a few Artists at a time.

when round tripping with photoshop cc, i get a saved psd file with my original raw,the problem is these are high file sizes and taking a lot of space, can i stop this?

That's not the workflow that I use. I have my Lightroom preferences set to create TIF images when going to Photoshop. I keep the original raw file and the TIF image (usually reduced to an 8-bit image) and only export JPEG's when they are needed to send to a lab or to send to someone over the Internet. JPEG files are highly compressed. I only create them when they are needed, and they are discarded as soon as they have been used for their intended purpose. I keep the raw file and the Photoshop-created TIF in my library. This requires extra disk space. But I always have the highest quality files available.

  • Adobe Indesign and Photoshop CS3 Freezing after trying to save file

    Hi
I was using both Indesign and Photoshop yesterday with no trouble. Out the blue whenever I tried to either save a file or generally use any of the functionality within the File menu the dialogue box quickly appears then fades and the software freezes. Its doing this in both Indesign and Photoshop.
The IT department logged on using their administrator info and both packages appear to work fine it just seems to be once I log in using my user account.  We have tried reseting preferences etc.
Any help or advice would be welcomed.
    Thanks

You have a stored invalid folder reference and since it can't be restored, the apsp crash on file dialogs. Have your IT department sift through the registry and clean out the relevant MRU sections.

  • • Just downloaded Camera Raw 8.3/8.4, and Photoshop don't open any of my files anymore!

    Hello -
I fallen today on this update of Camera Raw  ->  http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2011/03/keeping-photoshop-up-to-date.html#notconnected
(See the sentence "Direct download links for Camera Raw 8.3 for Photoshop CS6").
And I saw Camera Raw 8.4 for CS6 (I'm currently working with this version).
Strange you read "8.3", but the link says "8.4"…
So cool, I directly downloaded and applied the "update". And the update has been successfully installed… If I may believe the below window (screenshot).
Just after, I opened Photoshop® CS6, and boummm now I can't open my pictures anymore!
    Photoshop® tells me that:
So what's wrong? Did I something wrong?
Could anyone help me on this?
Thank you, have a nice day…
    - Dimitri

Are you using mac os x 10.6 snow leopard?
If so, camera raw 8.4 doesn't work on snow leopard.
You'll have to revert to camera raw 8.3
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/camera-raw-84-support-policy.html#Revert%20to%208 .3%20on%20Mac%20OS
I thought adobe was supposed to fix the installers so camera raw 8.4 wouldn't install on snow leopard

  • Photoshop CS6 colors have shifted for PSD files; no longer match Bridge colors, resulting jpg colors off too

Until last night, Photoshop has been working relatively well** (see below) However, I processed a batch of DNG files through Bridge and saved them as PSDs.  When I opened up the new PSD files in PSCS5, the colors had shifted - more green, less saturated.
I went back to the DNG files and opened each up separately in PS - the color looked good.  I edited them, saved them as PSD files, and reopened them in PS - the colors were bad.
I cleared the Preferences (by holding Ctrl+Alt+Shift) when restarting PS.  Although it cleared up the pre-existing issue explained below **, it didn't fix the issue with the colors.
I rebooted my computer.  No luck.
I looked for available updates. None available.
I recalibrated my monitor (ColorMunki).  No luck.
I don't know what I did/what happened to cause the problem.  The day before, everything was fine.
I tried to fix it by experimenting with option under View.  The closest I could get the colors to matching those shown in Bridge was to set  View--Proof Colors-- Monitor RGB.
But here's the kicker - when I did a "save as" in PS the resulting jpeg had the same gross color shown in PS before setting the proof colors to Monitor RGB - and the jpeg colors are gross in Bridge and PS!  The same thing happens if I run a batch of PSDs via Bridge and save them as jpegs.  The resulting jpegs look gross in both PS and Bridge.
    HELP!
I'm using a PC with Windows 7.  All the images jpegs, DNG and PSD are in the RBG color space.
**(except for one weird issue - when I would try to open up a color balance layer, it would open a levels layer instead)

Nothing to do with CS3 files - you're hitting a common MacOS font bug.
Apple is working on a fix, but in the meantime you probably need to find the corrupt font that is triggering it.

  • Photoshop cc does not associate with psd files?

I have a simple answer to the problem of photoshop cc not being able to associate psd files and not showing in the options window when you try to associate it with the psd file? How do I get it into the forum where it belongs?

Photoshop does associate with PSD and PSB files on both platforms.
It sounds like your OS is confused about the available file associations.
Which OS version are you using?

  • Why is Photoshop Elements 8 not saving a psd file as a pdf now that I purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro?

Why is Adobe Elements 8 not saving a psd file as a pdf after I started using Adobe Acrobat XI Pro instead of my CS3 Pro? Both Adobe software is up to date and before I switched to Acrobat XI Pro, it worked fine. Help please...

You aren't talking to Adobe here. But still...Is it by any chance asking for a QUALIFYING product? If so, you purchased an UPGRADE and now need to give the serial number of the OLDER product (Acrobat 9 or X) which you must own to be able to use the upgrade. Simples.

all programs 64 bit (except InDesgin)
    Hello,
    there's a problem, which I couldn't solve.
I choose a photo in LR 5.3 to edit in an external editor (which is Photoshop CS 6, format: psd, 16 bit, 300 dpi) and PS CS 6 starts so I can do the editing.
When I save my work, the new file not appears in the LR 5.3 catalogue / collection.
I choose different a file format (tiff), but I haven't success.
Any ideas, what could be the reason?
    Thank You all!!
    Cheers

If you decide to stick with your present software configuration then it will be necessary for you to convert your raw images using the latest DNG converter.  Conversion to DNG is built into Lightroom, and it doesn't use the standalone DNG converter.
I might suggest that you download the Lightroom 4.1 RC2 from the Adobe Labs web site and give it a try.  It will create a copy of your Lightroom 3 catalog, but it will not interfere with your use of the previous version.  I am running it, and don't find that I have the problems that some are.  You can use it for free until it expires.  That should give you enough time to evaluate whether or not you want to switch.  I have purchased Lightroom 4 but have not installed it yet.  I'm going to wait until 4.1 is officially released.

  • Why can't I find and open a text layer on photo (psd file) for editing using an iMac?

When I open Photoshop Elements 10 Editor to edit a text layer on a 511KB 412x292 psd photo the text layer is not shown.  How do I open the text layer?  How do I edit the text layer?  How do I save the finished work product?  The background layer is locked.  I can't unlock it.  Do I have to unlock first or do what?  I have tried any number of approaches none of which open the text layer for editing.  I would greatly appreciate help in resolving this issue.

How do you know there is a text layer? All the layers should be shown in the layers panel.
The background layer is always partially locked and that has no effect on editing. You can ignore that.
Would this be a comp layer or part of a layer group created in full Photoshop, by any chance?

  • Crop marks, color management, .psd files

    Hi.
Working in AI 10. Have XP. PS7
I have my color settings set at the North America Prepress 2 for every adobe program except AI 10 because it is not listed. I have it on the North America Prepress without the "2"
I have been told that if I create a PS document that needs crop marks, to simply place it into AI & create the crop marks there for the printer if I need to show bleeds.
When I print the AI file with crop marks, the color does not match the PS file printed.
Is there anything I can do?

And you've double-checked your color settings (not just the overall preset but the individual options)?
One way to make sure you have the same settings in both apps is to save out a color settings file (.csf) in one application and apply it in the other. Just hit the SAVE button in the color settings dialog and give your settings a unique name before saving it to a location that you can easily find again. In the corresponding dialog in your other application, use the LOAD button.
I have PS 7-10 and AI 8/10/12 on a machine here, so, just to make sure, I just did a quick test with a CMYK image with the same versions as you. I show no color shift whatsoever between the PSD opened in Photoshop and placed in Illustrator.
As to the jagged text, realize that you're not looking at editable text once you've placed the PSD in AI. It's just part of the raster image at that point. Therefore, it does not benefit from any AI text anti-aliasing. What you're seeing is the difference in on-screen raster anti-aliasing between PS 7 and AI 10. This does not affect the printout.
I'm sorry, but without seeing your settings, I have little else to suggest.
P.S. - I see you are comparing printouts from the two applications. Since you are working in CMYK, I assume you're printing to a PostScript device. If not, you might be looking at slight differences in the way PS 7 and AI 10 deal with sending CMYK data to an RGB device (such as a typical desktop inkjet printer).
    If you
are printing to a PostScript proofer, I'd ask to see your print-time settings in both applications.
If your printing company wants the AI file, send it to them and ask them for a digital contract proof before committing to press.
