IPhoto '08 corrupting edited photos
Hello, all. I'm having an issue w/ iPhoto '08. Around 75% of the time when I edit a photo, iPhoto corrupts the edited picture. The thumbnail appears as you expect it, but when you go to look at the pic in full-screen mode, nothing is there. You don't even have the option to revert to previous/original.
The only way I've been able to 'fix' it is by going into the library and copying the original file into the modified folder. Interestingly enough, though, is that when I copy the 'original' to the 'modified' folder to restore access to the picture, there isn't a file already in the 'modified' folder corresponding to the problem picture.
One would think that there would be a duplicate file name already there - is that why the thumbnails are appearing but the full photo does not? What could be causing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Curt
This is an odd problem and not one I've come across before.
Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and in that Account, create a new iPhoto Library. Import a few pics and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

Photoshop and elements 13
Working in iPhoto
Want to edit image using photoshop elements
Did the following
IPhoto>Preferences>Advanced>Edit Photos: In drop down menu chose in Photoshop Elements
Also control click and chose edit in external editor
Drop down menu edit photos in external program>photoshop Elements
Go to to the image I'm working on --- selected the image, the clicked on edit. When nothing happened I double clicked the image. Still elements didn't open. Then I opened the Elements editor, went back to iphoto and tried the entire process again. the photo still didn't open on Elements 13 for editing.
I have 3 Elements 13 books as well as looked on line--all my references say the exact same thing ---- iPhoto>Preferences>advanced>edit in external program>photoshop Elements
I uninstalled and reinstalled both iPhoto as well as Elements.
I spoke with application technical support. There appears to be nothing wrong with my copy of iPhoto. However there is no support from Adobe. I waited for over 1.5 hours for chat support several days ago, and finally gave up.You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

IPhoto: Original non-edited photos have replaced the edited ones
Hi! For the last few days, I have noticed that all of my edited photos in iPhoto show up unedited as when originally imported. Thankfully, when I click "Edit", the edited version still shows up, but only in edit-mode. Guess I could go through each of all my photos and make a slight readjustment just and save each image again, but hopefully some of you guys can help me out with an easier operation. I thought of refreshing my library, but somehow I couldn't find a way to do that. As I downloaded the latest iPhoto version an hour ago, I hoped that the problem would be solved through the refreshment of iPhoto that automatically popped up. But no. I need some help!
Thanks for you replies! As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there? -
IPhoto's corrupts entire photo database.
I have had it with iPhoto. For the 2nd time in 2 years iPhoto corrpts the entire database and is not able to restore it. Even the timemachine backup does not work. How come Apple ia not able to make a decent photo program?
Anyone suggestions for an alternative? So the corruption was caused by the crash?
One alternative in that scenario is to rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
As for restoring from TM, did you import the restored library?
The only thing vaguely similar to iPhoto at that price range is Picasa. It's free though not as capable. As always, some swear by it, some swear at it. Biggest miss: the OS integration.

Edited photos are not reflected in iPhoto 08 and a bonus question
I'm using iPhoto 08 to upload photos from my DSLR. I then drag them into Photoshop for editing and save them from that application. When I go back to iPhoto they still show the unedited version. If I drag that photo back into Photoshop, it is indeed the edited version.
Is there a setting to show the edited version in iPhoto 08?
2nd question:
When I use the finder application to navigate to the location of my iPhoto library, I can't "dig"any deeper than the iPhoto application. I know I can "show file" from iPhoto, but it some cases, I'd rather just navigate to the location through finder. Can this be done?mil8 wrote:

No - once you export a photo, you own it and iPhoto has nothing more to do with it until you import it back into iPhoto (which in your case is not what you want because it duplicates the photo in your iPhoto library)
-- BUT
There is a setting to make photoshop the editor for iPhoto and if you use that your photos will be correctly reflected in iPhoto
iPhoto menu ==> General ==> edit photos "in application" and select photoshop as the application
Now when you edit a photo in iPhoto it will pass it to photoshop, you will edit it and save it (NOT SAVE AS) and the edited version will be part of your iPhoto library

Editing photos (from iphoto) in PSE 11
I've recently upgraded to PSE 11 from PSE 10. Previously, when I click edit in iphoto, the photo that I want to edit automatically opens up in PSE 10 and I can do my edit rightaway.
However, the photo does not open up automatically in PSE 11 now. My computer will launch PSE 11 but I have to manually load the photo for editing.
I've done the necessary settings in iphoto (i.e edit using external editor) but it's still not working like it used to.
Is this a change in feature in PSE 11 or I'm missing something here?
Appreciate all advice and tips on this.
Thank you.In iphoto, for any edited photo (no matter where you edited), to see the original, select the edited photo and go to Photo>Revert to Original. iPhoto remembers your original, but versions in iphoto don't work the same way the do in PSE, at least not when you use an external editor. iPhoto assumes that if you want to use another program for editing, you want to use that other program for editing. If you want to use iphoto instead, you would need to revert it. If you want to have both available, the original and PSE edit, some versions of iphoto automatically send a duplicate for editing, but I don't think the latest version does, so make a duplicate in iphoto and send that to PSE.
An external editor is by definition external --the photo left iphoto to get edited. The external editor mechanism merely lets you get your edited photos back into iphoto again automatically. -
Download edited photos from IPhone 5
Can anyone please advise on how to download edited photos in the standard "Photo" app to my PC?
previously I used IPhoto to transfer edited photos into my camera roll and then deleted the original copies. When I then downloaded the photos to my PC via USB cable I was getting the emdited photos rather than the originals.
Now that IPoto has been removed with ios8 I am back to square one, any photos edited in the Photos app when downloaded via USB revert back to the original copies???
There must be a simple fix for this obvious glitch?Hey snoop2008,
Thanks for the question. You’ll want to open the photo with an application that can read XMP, or you can choose to email the photo to yourself:
iOS: Edited photos show original photo after import or in other apps
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4253
Apple uses Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP), a standard created by Adobe, for nondestructive photo editing. XMP allows you to undo edits and to revert back to an original photo without the loss of quality. Displaying the edited photo requires OS X v10.9 or later and software that can read XMP. The following applications support XMP:
iPhoto 9.5 or later
iPhoto for iOS
Aperture 3 or later
Adobe Lightroom
Adobe Photoshop Elements
Other photo-management applications and some iOS apps may also display XMP.
Your photo-management application will display the original photo if it can't read XMP. To see the edited photo on your computer, email the photo to yourself from your device, then copy the photo from your email application to your photo application.
Thanks,
Matt M. -
How to edit photo size in Iphoto
Hi Guys,
Im trying to find a way to reduce the size of a photo so I can post it on a message board. I cant find where to do this! I tried "cropping" the photo but I dont want to cut the photo I just want to reduce the size from 2048 x 1536 to 800 x 600 (pixels). Is there a way to reduce by percentages like in Windows??? Thanks for the help Im still new to my Imac...Im going to assume there is a way to do this!!!
Dr. PeeYou'll have to export the photo out of iPhoto using the File->Export->File Export menu option which will let you select the pixel dimension and the quality/compression level of the new file.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto crashes after editing a photo
Hi,
I'm desperate to tone some photos of our recent wedding so I can post them on the web. I am a long-time iPhoto user and have really not had many problems at all (or I'm able to figure them out), but this one has me stumped.
iPhoto will crash on some photos that were given to me by other photographers. The crash happens when trying to edit the picture in full screen mode OR after editing in an external editor (Photoshop CS), iPhoto will crash when you return to the program. Normally, I return to iPhoto and the picture updates fine and all is well.
The only other change I can think of happened today. I opened iPhoto today and it told me it wanted to rebuild the thumbnails. I let it do this since I thought I had time. After I couldn't edit some of the pictures, I have tried the Command+Option while opening iPhoto and it will rebuild the small thumbnails, but it crashes when i try to "Rebuild all of the photos' thumbnails (this may take a while)". Not sure if that is a clue or not.
Also, I checked some posts here and tried to change the embedded color profile to see if that would help, but no luck there either. I also tried to export a photo that I wanted to edit, opened it in Preview and re-saved it, but again no joy.
I have included the crash log to see if that helps. Thanks again to anyone for helping!

Try using the Automator application I made for embedding the sRGB profile in image files. You just drop one or a batch of files onto the application and you're done. You can download "Embed sRGB Profile" at Toad's Cellar.
Do you Twango?
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto '08 will edit the wrong photo
When I import a set of photo's from my camera, I'll view them all to remove the bad ones, and then do some quick edits on a few. With the slide bar on the lower right, it goes from 12 photo's to one, nothing in between. When I view the photo's in the one photo at a time mode, and then right click to choose "Edit", iPhoto will pull up the first photo in the group, not the one I'm looking at. This seems very strange. If I slide the bar just a little to get 12 photos, and right click on one, it will always edit the photo that the mouse is on. Why doesn't this work with a single photo showing?
Also, is there any way to have the slider on the right go from 12 photos down to 9, 6, 3, 2 then 1. 12 or one seems like a very course selection. I'm used to Adobe Photoshop elements on the PC that had finer control over the number of photos showing.
thanks,
ChrisIf changing to the Apple mouse doesn't help delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and try again with both mice.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
IPhoto 6.0.4 crashing after editing photo in Elements 3.0
After I edit a photo in Elements 3.0 (double-click to edit, make changes, save as JPEG, max quality, close) and click back to iPhoto, iPhoto crashes suddenly (no error message). Thereafter, I cannot view the photo I edited in full screen mode, nor can I view the photo adjacent to it in the roll. The link to the full-size photo, as opposed to the thumbnail, appears to be corrupt. Opening iPhoto while holding down shift+option doesn't help.
Steven:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
double-click to edi
I'm assuming you've setup iPhoto to use Photoshop Elements when you double click on a thumbnail, right?
Try downloading and running BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. See if that will help.
If not create a new library, import a couple of photos and try editing with PSE as you do in the other library. If that one crashes then it's either an iPhoto problem or a system wide problem. If it doesn't crash, try rebuilding the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and following the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all the options.
Do you Twango?

IPhoto turned most of my edited photos into black files without any previous versions
I discovered the issue when I tried to edit some photos and the edit screen only displayed noise. After trying the steps recommended here and rebuilding my library most of my edited photos were black... I tried to return them to their previous versions but there aren't any.
When I create a new library and import a single photo and then try to edit it the iPhoto edit screen still either displays an image with noise or a black one.
I really like iPhoto and hope this issue can be fixed!
I'm using iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3 on OS X 10.8.3This is really a puzzlement. The last test I can think of is it could be a preference file other than iPhoto's. Here's how to test that premise:
Trouble Shooting Preferences
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Home/Library folder and Option-drag (copy) the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
3 - select the contents of your Home/Library/Preferences folder and drag them into the Trash bin in the Dock. You will be asked to provide your Admin password.
4 - reboot.
5 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed
6 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
B - Open the Preferences folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Home/Library/Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace or Skip button.
D - reboot.
7 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the contents of the Preference folder on the Desktop into the Home/Library/Preference folder and replace the entire contents that were created by clicking on Replace.
8 - reboot.
Also do you have access to another Mac that you can test editing some of the photos you're having problems with here?
Here's another test: reformat the card in the camera or use another card, take some photos, import and edit. This could tell if there's a problem with the file itself due to a corrupted card format. -
IPhoto '08 - No image comes up when I try to edit photos.
When I open the edit screen the only thing that shows up is the thumbnails at the top. There is no pic in the main screen to edit. What is going on? I really hope its not something simple or I will be really ******.
Thanks for any help
Mr BoondoxxWelcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select last three options.
Fix #2
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.
