IPhoto '08 created 26,000 zero KB files on my desktop. help me delete them

i have a 26,000 picture iphoto '08 library. when i had all pictures selected, a lagging finder response led to me accidentally dragging those files to the desktop. realizing my error, i force quit everything. i ended up with literally 26,000 zero KB "hidden" jpeg files on my desktop. this makes my finder extremely slow and virtually useless.
i tried deleting these zero kb gremlins, but i am prompted to confirm every single deletion, which ***** worse than you can imagine. apparently they are in use by a program, even though i have since deleted iphoto, hence the prompts for every file. (fwiw, i now use aperture 2.1)
i had this problem once before and i found a unix prompt on the internet that moved everything on the desktop into a folder. then i used another prompt to delete that folder, and that was that. basically i bypassed the finder, and all of the associated confirmation pop-up messages, using my imac's terminal.
i've spent about a week searching for this prompt, but to no avail. then i tried learning basic unix commands, but i really have no idea what i'm doing. i tried this command and it didn't work:
piahi-imac:~ dan$ mv /Users/dan/Desktop/*.jpg /Users/dan/crap
-bash: /bin/mv: Argument list too long
i called apple care's legendary tech support, and the guy said "uh, we don't do terminal support. you can really screw up your computer that way." he then suggested i just click "confirm" 26,000 times.
any suggestions?

If I barrow an image from iPhoto, that is drag it to another file or the desktop it seems to half disappear.  It still shows until I try to enlarge it then I get a triangle exclamation mark in the enlarged field, once I return to Photos or an Album it is there.  However it can no longer be dragged into another file.  How can I recover these images?  Is there a better way to duplicate a image to locate in outside of iPhoto?
I never had this problem in previous versions of iPhoto.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the link to the original file.
What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • I have taken pictures of items that are linked to a database that I am building.  How can I bypass importing into iPhoto and simply downloading the images as "files" not "photos" so I can access them with my database?  thanx.

I have taken pictures with both my Sony camera and my iPhone of items that are linked to a database that I am building, as well as my website.  How can I bypass importing the images into iPhoto and simply downloading the images as "files" not "photos" so I can access them with my database?  thanx.

If your Sony has a removable memory card you can use a card reader to copy the image files from to a folder on your Desktop and then move them anywhere you'd like.
Since the iPhone doesn't have a removable memory card you can try using Image Capture to see if you can manually upload the files to a folder on the Desktop.
If you have to import the photos, which are image files, into iPhoto you can then export them out of iPhoto to the Desktop and go from there to your database.  Just because they are in iPhoto doesn't prevent you from using them elsewhere.

Aren't they in your iTunes library?  If so, sync them back to your phone.  If not, redownload them (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519).

Switch to the Finder app and open its preferences.
Remove the check mark on the items you don't want displayed in the Sidebar tab.
The originals are not removed from the machine.

    HI
If iam not wrong you want to select a file from a location that you don't know so if this is ur problem then use the function module
    F4_FILENAME
this FM helps to locate and select the desired file from the system.
Sample code that you can check is
    How to get windows filename

  • Latest Adobe Reader update deleted all files from my desktop - help please!

    Dear all!
Yesterday I opened up a .pdf document with Adobe Reader. I clicked the Help | Check for Updates option. The reader informed me that there was an update available. I then disabled my antivirus (as is recommended). I selected the available update by checking the box next to it. I then clicked the Download option.
The update began to download. At that moment I noticed that the .pdf document was still open (i.e. Adobe Reader was still running). Knowing that the installation, when it begins, tends to notify me that it must close Adobe Reader in order for the installation to continue, I decided to close Adobe Reader myself before being prompted to do so. All was fine until that moment, as the update download and install runs in a completely separate process from the Reader, it was not affected.
After I closed the Reader, with the update still running I noticed that all files I had on my desktop were gone. None of the folders were missing, just the single files and most of my shortcuts. I checked to see if the files were just invisible or phisically missing. It was the latter. Windows Explorer showed that all files I had on my desktop were gone (deleted/overwritten I guess). A search of my computer for the file names came up empty, even though I was searching with the "search hidden and system files" options enabled!
I tried a number of deleted file restoration softwares but none have identified the desktop files I was missing.
Be so kind as to spare me from the "did you check the power cord" category of "answers", as I am not a complete idiot. The Acrobat Update, or something associated with it has to be at the root of this problem, as the antivirus software I have installed came up empty when I searched the computer for virurses, worms and the likes...
All help on this matter would be appreciated. Needless to say, most of my current work was stored on the desktop...
I am running WindowsXP sp. 3, Acrobat Reader 9.34
    With regards
    jack_84

Please ignore the previous unrelated reply - I will deal with it separately.
I must first say that this is a very puzzling problem, and that I have never heard of anything like it.  Apart from the missing desktop content, it also puzzles me that you state your Adobe Reader version as 9.34, when the latest Reader version is actually 9.3.2.
Anyway, how to solve it?  Can I assume that you do not have a very recent backup, from where you can simply restore all the lost content?
I do not know if your desktop content is really gone (deleted), or if it is somehow just not visible.  There are a few things we can try, but I strongly suggest that you make a full backup of your system before you try anything!
Since I have never seen this before, I cannot make any definitive recommendations, but just suggest what I would do if that happened on my computer.  Again, not before making a full backup.
    Uninstall Adobe Reader.
System Restore to a time before the problem started.
Check the following registry keys, if they have a value 'NoDesktop', and what it is set to
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
If you are on XP Pro, you can use gpedit.msc to check these settings (Configuration | Administrative Templates | Desktop ["Hide and disable all items on the desktop"]).

  • Can i keep files into my time capsule and delete them from my mac?

i have to many files in my mac and i'm running out of space so i want to put the photos and music only on my time capsule and delete them from my mac, is that possible?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Of course you can do that, but it won't work if you are using the Time Capsule to make backups. In this case, I recommend to leave your Time Capsule as your backup drive and buy an external drive to put your photos and music on it.
If you aren't using your Time Capsule for that, you can do it

  • UNABLE TO VIEW ANY FILES IN TRASH, AND UNABLE TO DELETE THEM.

Hi i wondered if someone can help ,me on this one as i have searched for an answer and nothing works.
I have upgraded to my new iMac and migrated all my files over, i have now deleted some of the unwanted files and folders, to free up space.
HOWEVER - i have tried deleting them and cant, so as some of them are locked i went back into the trash to unlock them and even though there are thousands of files in the trash none of them are viewable, so i cant drag them back out, drag them to the terminal window or anything.
    I have repaired privileges
I have tried to use the terminal window and delete files, but cant view them to drag them
I have tried to secure deleted them
My problem is i cant view the files so i cant do anything with them.
Does any one have any ideas,
should i try to delete the .trash file as i think someone mentioned in which case how do i do that.
Any help would be fantastic. Thank you in advance
    Kris Watson

I have managed to resolve this problem (however it is still deleting the files so fingers are crossed still.) Thanks for the help by the way.
A friend showed me a way to do it, thought ide put it out there so people might benefit from it.
I restarted with the shift key pressed down. after about 4-5 mins it starts in Safe Boot mode, ive logged in, and started to secure delete the files and it seems as though it is working although very slowly as there are thousands of files.
The reason the are so many files is that they are all 'old' time machine back ups from my old powerbook. Me being the extra cautious bunny that i am have several copies of every file anyway 'just in case', so it will take house but it will free up huge amounts of space.
    thanks again

  • I inadvertently imported all of my iPhoto videos to my iMovie library.  I have tried everything possible to delete them.  I still want to keep them in iPhoto however. What can I do?

I inadvertently imported all of my iPhoto videos to my iMovie library.  I have been unable to delete them. How can I delete them from the iMovie library without deleting them fro iPhoto?

Did you import them into an Event Folder? Or are they still just showin up under the iPhoto Videos folder? Anything inside of the iPhoto Videos folder cannot be deleted, because it is under the full control and jurisdiction of iPhoto and is merely 'shared' from iPhoto and made visible to iMovie. Everything else can first be deleted, then moved to the Trash. To find the items that have been marked for deletion under iMovie '11 go to the pull-down tab at the bottom of the iMovie window frame labeled Show: and choose 'Rejected Only'. Then when you see all the clips with red stripes on them Select All (⌘ Command key + a). Then click on the button labeled Move rejected to Trash.

  • Backup files on PC becomes too big, how to delete files not needed and where to delete them?

I used iTune to manage iPhone and iPad. iTune will back up content of both devices. I found that recently the backup files become too many and used up a significant amount of my PC harddisk. How do I go about to delete old backup files to release harddisk space? Thanks.

Backups for iPods, iPhones, and iPads are fairly small in size... 60-70mb approximately.
I seriously doubt they are filling your hard drive or using a significant amount of space.
You can remove backups via iTunes
    Edit > Preferences > Devices
Select the backup or backups and delete them.
Here's the Apple support article about backups: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766

  • There's a file on my desktop won't delete

    hey everyone
i have a 2006 black macbook 160 gb hd, 2 gb ram and ive been having issues for awhile but this one is really annoying. theres a file on my desktop call with the extension ".docx.doc.download" and it's weird. when i look on the desktop in the finder window it's not there but it's on the desktop and everytime i move it to the trash i get this notification
and everytime i move the item around the desktop...this happens to the screen
i tried using first aid in disk utlity and that did nothing...any help is appreciated!

Open the Terminal application. Type the following line:
    sudo rm -R
Put a space after the -R. Don't hit enter yet. Next drag and drop the file you want to kill into Terminal. It's path and name will be added to the command. Now press Enter. Terminal will ask for your admin password. Enter that and press Enter again. The file should disappear.

  • IPhoto 9.6 Does Not Recognize .MOV files!!! - HELP!

Re: iphoto won’t import mov video
    in response to léonie
I just read the thread to which léonie pointed. (Thanks!)
In System>Library>Caches, I had a file named "com.apple.xpchelper.cache". That file showed a modification date of yesterday -- I don't know what changes this file. Quite likely it was the install of 10.9.5 that I did yesterday.
Now, I was lucky enough to have a clone of my system from 3-4 days ago. I copied the older (cloned) version of this file, which itself had a modification date of about a month ago - to the working system. (I first renamed the current "com.apple.xpchelper.cache" to be safe.)
Then, I restarted ... and everything works like before! All movies play, and I can import.
I am not sure at all why this happened or why the above has fixed things for me, but it seems it has!
I am very happy to have fixed this issue without having to do a system recovery, which always has hitches here and there, and takes a decent chunk of time no matter how "backed up" you are.

  • Trying to transfer jpegs from my pc to iPhoto but get an error msg saying file is unrecognizable, any help would be great

Hi, little new to the forums so bear with me,  just got done putting all my pics from my PC to a flash drive to transfer them to iPhoto,  iPhoto imported all but 400+ photos stating that the files were unrecognizable.  looking for any help walking me through the steps to get this mystery solved, Thanks

First the ones that won' import:
Open them in Preview and just Save them. See if they'll import then.
    Duplicates:
For dealing with duplicates in iPhoto check out Duplicate Annihilator or Decloner

  • Stopping iTunes from creating a .xml and .itf file on my desktop

i am having difficulty with the iTunes library .xml and .itf files being created on my desktop every time i run iTunes.  All of my media files are on my external hard drive in the 'iTunes' folder.  can any one help?
Computer is running Windows 7; iTunes version 10.2.2.12

First, I would recommend repairing the hard drive with Disk Utility.
If that doesn't fix the problem, there's a very dangerous command you can execute in the Terminal.  This is very hazardous, because a simple typo can result in very drastic consequences.  I have seen people erase their entire hard drive by putting a space in the wrong place!  So, please follow the directions I'm going to give you very carefully!
Open the Terminal, which is found in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.  In the Terminal, enter the following:
    sudo rm -f
Make sure to put a space after the "-f"!  Then, drag the troublesome file from the Finder and drop it on the Terminal window.  That should insert the path to the file in the command.  Then go back to the Terminal and press return.  You will be asked for your password, and when you type it, nothing will be shown as a security measure.  Press return again after entering your password.  The file should be deleted.
