IPhoto '08 creating modified files automatically?

I want to free up hard drive space. I don't use iPhoto to alter images, so I do not understand why modified images are self-creating. I am also not touching any actual image files (outside of iPhoto) aside from looking at them.
1. I open iPhoto Library with "Show Package Contents" and open up two Finder windows, one with Modified, and one with Original. For example, I'll locate a modified photo in "2009 > Apr 18, 2009 > DSC_8157.jpg"
2. I find the same photo in the Originals folder and compare the two. Example: Original file is 4.8 MB. Modified file is 5.2 MB. Visual inspection of both images leads me to believe they are both the same.
3. The one thing I have noticed is all modified images are vertical (I rotated the camera when I photographed them).
4. In iPhoto, I select the photo, right-click, and choose "Revert to original". I click "OK" when the warning pops up, and the file is apparently restored. Looking at the Finder windows, I see the file deleted. But it returns shortly thereafter.
So, in writing this, I discovered the answer to my question: it must be the vertical images that are being modified. But this is essentially duplicating the image (in a larger size, for some reason) and filling up my hard drive.
Is there nothing I can do?

On your camera you have the option to auto rotate images set so when iPhoto sees them it does what you ask which crtes a modified version
You can trun the auto rotate off on your camera to avoid this - otherwise there is nothing you can do

  • IPhoto creates modified file

I'm a lightroom user for the editing part of my photos.
Now I've created smaller versions of my pictures and set them up in a special folder so I can have an easy way to transport them over to my mobile devices.
My issue is that sometimes when I import photos (to iphoto), it creates a modified file which is quite a bit larger then what I want in iphoto. It's about 400% larger then the photo that I have imported to iPhoto. I have not asked the program to modify anything or create any kind of copies of my pictures. I have even made sure that iphoto doesn't copy the pictures I import. I don't want more copies. I have them in my "ipod-ipad" file and that is all I need.
It's all very strange cause it no rime or reason to when it doesn't it. There is a few picture here and there that end up changed and with a modified file that is stored on my hard drive (all my originals are on an external hard drive).
The only reason I discovered this is cause one pictures was cut to only show 2/3 of the actual picture.
Does anyone know why iPhoto does this and is there a way I can stop it?
    Thank you
    Sophie

By larger I mean file size. Say the original (I use that word loosely since it's not my original but it's the only original iPhoto knows exists) is 250kb the modifies file might be 950kb.
It looks like the portrait photos all have a modified file but it's not exclusively the portrait pictures that have that. Some of the landscape photos have them as well. When I say revert back to original the color of the photo changes slightly. It's like iphoto has done modifications in the color as well (I have done that in Lightroom and since it is a published service maybe iphoto can sense that it has been changed).
There is no flags anywhere so not sure what you mean by that.
When I say the picture has been cut to 2/3 I mean that the left 1/3 of the picture has been cut out. Very strange. When I press revert to original, it goes back to what it should be.
None of the pictures I've been looking at for this (haven't gone thru all of them) is ordinary jpeg (not RAW) taken with my iPhone.
    Thanks for you help

  • PSE8 convert touched all create/modified dates--WHY??!?

So i converted two of my smaller catalogs to PSE8 (in part because it refused to convert the real catalog). Now I discover that all of the created/modified file dates for the images in the catalog got touched to the time I converted the catalog.
What, pray tell, is up with that??!? Why does it do it? Do I need to restore my server to get my original dates back? Will PSE8 just keep changing them?!? Yes, I use dates in the Organizer catalog. No, I don't want to depend on it as the sole source of correct information and have it mangle the original source of that information--and the only one attached directly to the image in question--wholesale without even asking.
    Other thought upon upgrade:
I also find that, contrary to what I understood from a post here, the v. 8 organizer still wants to think \\Myserver\photos\mine\trythis.jpg and \\MYSERVER\photos\mine\trythis.jpg are DIFFERENT photos. This wreeks absolute havoc with duplicated imports and so on. What a nightmare!!! Glad my real catalog (17k images not just a couple hundred) didn't convert. I'm increasingly unsure I want to try to solve whatever ails that one and convert it.
Organizer still can't watch network folders without having to hack around with authentication accounts for their service. Adobe still, apparently, hasn't heard of home networks.
Organizer still tries very hard to keep the location of catalogs opaque and under its control, not the users.
I read another thread that said, in effect, PSE can't handle folders well, so scrap using folders to organize and just make PSE an essential part of your workflow and use Adobe's Organizer to manage 100% of any organization and so on. Well, that might be a great idea if PSE integrated with all the other tools in the computing universe and was guaranteed to be around in perpetuity. Speaking as a long time Microsoft Money (now abandonware) user, I can tell you that betting this kind of data on one developer's application is a pretty risky gamble in the long haul. When they stop making enought profit from it and walk away, you and your data and your complete attachment to their tool are just s****ed.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
Don't ever screw with the negatives without permission.
I understand the sentiment, but there's a basic conflict with your desires -- you also don't want an organizer that locks you into a database.
If you want to apply tags, captions, notes, dates/times, star ratings, and map location to your photos, and you want to organize those photos into stacks, version sets, albums, and what not, you've got two choices:
    - Use a program that stores the truth about such information in a database, and hope the program provides enough hooks to get all of the information out of the database when you want it.  Such programs include PSE, Lightroom, iPhoto, Microsoft Media Expression.  Only Microsoft Media Expression provides a well-defined programmer API for extracting all photo information from its database, and even that is not for the faint-of-heart.  With these programs, the standard mechanism to get your information out of the database is to embed it in the industry-standard EXIF fields of the photos (modifying the photos).   If you ask it, Lightroom can export information from its library (the database storing "truth") into the photos, and for raw files, it will write .xmp sidecar files rather than adding EXIF fields to the raw files; but I don't think it does that for other file types such as JPEGs.
    - Use a program that stores the truth in the industry-standard EXIF fields of the photos.  Such programs include Windows Live Photo Gallery, FastStone and other similar image browsers, and Adobe Bridge (though it keeps stack information somewhere in a database).  These programs necessarily change the photos' EXIF fields when you change metadata.

  • NCP Rights needed to create a file

I have to give users Read, Write, Create, Modify, File Scan and ERASE rights to create a file. There are some folders that we want users to be able to create documents in but not be able to delete them. I think what is going on is as the document is being created it is creating a temp file that has to be deleted and it cannot do it with out the erase right. It happens in all word processors that I have tested, Word, Word Perfect, notepad. Does anybody know if that is what is happening and is there a solution? Thanks

I know when you use MS Office apps, it creates a temporary, hidden
version of the file and then deletes it when you exit the application.
Your best solution here would be to advise users to create the file
locally, then when they are finished save it to the location on the
network. This would allow you to revoke E without causing any issues.
In fact, the only permission they would need is C but if you want them
to also see what's out there then give them R,F as well.

  • How do I set PhotoStream to name files automatically as "YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss"?

How do I set iPhoto/PhotoStream to name files automatically as "YYYY-MM-DD hh:mm:ss"? I have iPhoto version 9.5.1.

Do you want to upload the photos with a date-time format as a filename or download?
The PhotoStream does not support renaming the files. It will use the filenames of the original image file. So the only option is to rename the files before sharing to My Photo stream or after downloading. You can batch change the titles using the command "Photos > Batch Change" and set the title to a format with date and time. Then export the versions and use the title as filename and reimport. Then share the renamed photos to your photo stream.
A rather tedious work-around, and it does not give you the exact format you want. There is no good way to do it, just like TD said.

  • Does iPhoto 09 create a modified file when an image is rotated?

Does iPhoto 09 create a modified file when an image is rotated.
    What about preview?
    Thanks

If you use iPhoto, than use iPhoto. Remember, the modified file is usually much smaller than the original, it is really more of a preview. And if you do any other editing, you don't create multiple modifieds, iPhoto puts all your edits, including rotation, in one modified file.
Preview does not claim to be lossless, so it probably does not create a behind the scenes modified image.

  • IPhoto '09 - original and (un)modified files

Hi there, just beginning to use this software and am confused.
I have my original photos on my hard drive. When I import them into iPhoto, I get two additional copies - one in the iPhoto Library Originals folder, and another in the Modified folder, despite the fact I have done nothing to modify them. So, I end up with three copies. Sure, I can delete the original hard drive ones, but then I still have two copies taking up scarce disk space.
Question is, why am I automatically getting an iPhoto Original copy and a Modified copy? Some googling tells me that if a photo has been rotated, this will be the case. But this is also happening for photos originally taken in landscape format. Does it, then, happen for any photo taken on a camera with an autorotate function?
How can I solve this problem so that I have just one (Original) photo in my iPhoto library (original original still available elsewhere, and a modified version only being created if I actually do something to the photo subsequently in iPhoto?
    Thanks so much!

Okay, thanks, Larry. You know before you answered I did go ahead and delete the Modified folder to see what would happen (bearing in mind I have the original originals in two other places). (Sorry for the contrariness.) I deleted it while iPhoto was open, and it was simply instantly recreated, which was a bit of a surprise. Then I closed iPhoto and deleted it, then reopened iPhoto, and no Modified folder was created.
Everything looks good in the iPhoto library - SO FAR, of course - though a right-click does give the options for "Show File" (just points to hard disk root directory) and "Show Original File" (points to iPhoto Originals folder).
I am going to leave it like that and see if anything happens (if it does I'll report back for others to hear). Worst comes to worst, I just delete everything, create a new Library and reimport again. I won't rely on iPhoto as my only source of originals...
    Thanks again.

  • Missing "Modified File" in iPhoto '11

When attempting to empty the Trash (at least that is what I thought I did) it actually started to delete files from my iPhoto library. At first I thought the actual "Original" however it turns out only "Modified" which is now redirected to Previews. (And no, I don't have any backup of it anymore as Timecapsule was nice enough to decide to delete older backups on its own)
In iPhoto I just see an exclamation mark and I can look at the original photo by going to edit.
Now, is there a way to at least put the original file to where the preview file should be? Knowing that I won't recover whatever was modified in the first place however at least in the library it shows up as ok?
Or is my only way to write some code that does that? (parse library, check for target file exists, if not copy original? - not very space eficient but I don't want to see those empty images anymore)
    Thanks for any pointers!

The exclamation point indicates the iPhoto has broken the file path to the original image file. Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • How do I stop iphoto from creating events automatically when I import photos from an external hard drive?

IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos and when I merge events and then go to finder>all images, I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....I try to delete the extra copies but then the albums or events also get affected, even if there is one copy of each photo left in all images...have someone had this problem?

You don't have a problem at all.
IPhoto is creating events automatically when I import photos
This is how iPhoto works. Every photo is in an Event. Events are the basic organisation of the Library. Every import means at least one new Event. Yes you can merge Events after import and so on, but there is at least one Event created at each import.
I see iphoto has created several copies of each picture....
No it hasn't. It hs created versions of the photos, not copies. There will be a couple of thumbnails  for viewing in the iPhoto Window plus the Master and then a edited version for pics that are modified. The icons for each of these may be similar but they are not copies - for a start they are different sizes - and all are required for iPhoto to work.
    go to finder>all images
Don't. This is simply a list of all the images on your computer. It makes no account or allowance for the purpose of these images. Really, if you're using iPhoto ignore this because if you
I try to delete the extra copies
Then you are trashing your Library.
So, this is how iPhoto works, there is no problem and stay away from All Images.

  • Original and modified file folders in iPhoto

I just loaded photos into iPhoto and the files populated in both the Originals and Modified file folders in iPhoto.  None of these photos have been modified.  I'm concerned with conserving disk space on my Mac.  How do I keep this from happening moving forward?

Your camera has an Auto-Rotate feature. However, the camera does not actually rotate any pixels in the file, but instead flags it with an instruction: "Display me this way". Because iPhoto integrate with other apps it automaticlly creates the modified version. Otherwise photos would turn up in your emails or word processing documents sideways, as these apps don't know nything about such tags.
If you then try to Revert to Original, iPhoto will remove the edited version. However, when it then looks at the Original file again, it sees the flag, and creates a new rotated version. This loop will run as long as you Revert to the Original. The solution is to either a: turn off the Auto-Rotate feature on your camera or b: rotate the photos prior to importing them to iPhoto.
Going forward: digitial photography take up lots of space. Don't be concerned about it. Buy a large external drive and put your iPhoto Library on it.

  • Whenever I modify a photo in Iphoto it puts it in a "modified" subfolder. Why can't I move this modified file (I changed name) back to the Iphoto main file so I can see it when I open my photos?

Whenever I modify a photo in Iphoto it puts it in a "modified" subfolder. Why can't I move this modified file (I changed and saved file name) back to the Iphoto main file so I can see it when I open my photos?

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.
If that does not cure it backup up your iPhoto library and rebuild it - depress the option and command keys and launch iphoto and use the options there - exact option depends on teh version you have
And always remember - NEVER make any changes of any sort to the structure or content of the iPhoto library - nothing - no deletions - no name changes - nothing

  • F110 Automatic Payment: Create payment file and create remittance

    Hello,
I'd like to know the steps to create payment file and remittances in Automatic payment process (F110).
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Emanula,
payment medium entries are customized in "payment method Country details". You have to decide whether you want to use the PMW or the classical paymentprogram.
The paymentadvices are generated from the paymentprogram by using the parameters from the CC-data of the paymentmethod - Box "Payment advice control".
At least: Don't forget to maintain the parameters in f110 "Printout/data medium"
Hope this gives you a help.

    Kindly help me simple way

You may want to look into getting Xtools ps-scripts - Browse Files at SourceForge.net then.  Most of the support is for ActionManager script code where XML code is use as an intermediate step.  There are quite a few Photoshop script in XTools .   Ross Huitt is an expert javascript programmer though is is fed up with Adobe's lack of support for Photoshop scripting particularly the bugs in ScriptUI he is still maintaining tool he  has created for us free of charge. Tools like Image Processor Pro. None of his scripts are save as binary so you can read all of his code there is a wealth of knowledge in there....
Also there is a scripting forum Photoshop Scripting

    Hi
please check the administration guide for BO XI 3.1 (look in the chapter BIAR command line tool)
You can generate BIAR files from the command line and thus automate this at OS level.
