IPhoto '08 doesn't open my library anymore

I am sure that this is addressed in some earlier post, but I am at my wit's end as to what to do and just need someone to tell me how to fix my problem. Here is the situaion:
I had moved my iPhoto Library to an external HDD, because it was getting too big for my 120 GB HDD (internal). It had been working well enough, and even had it working through a network hub so I could be anywhere in the house with my MacBook and still be able to synchronise and download photos into iPhoto.
For some reason, all of a sudden, last night when I opened iPhoto, it said that my thumbnails needed upgrading. That's the first time I heard of that, but I needed to get to some photos and clicked "Later" as it said that it would take some time and I could always do it later on. Then it just wouldn't load my library. I have a 50.6 GB library, with photos going as far back as 2003, when I first started taking photos. I have my wedding photos in this library. I can't afford to lose it. iPhoto doesn't recognize it, even when I employ the "Choose Library" feature and specify that that is the library I wish to use.
The photos are very much intact, because when I click on "Show Package Contents" after I highlight the library, I am able to see the individual photos and movies in Finder. This is actually the second time that I have had this problem, and I was able to work around it the first time by moving the photos to individual folders on my External HDD, and then access them using Picasa. I like Picasa, but wouldn't mind using iPhoto due to the seamless integration with the rest of Mac world that is my MacBook. Please help me to be able to use iPhoto again with my present library, as I don't know if I can trust it ever again. I am going to move those folders out of my Library, as I need access to them to be able to do what I need to do right now.
Anyone's help will be greatly appreciated.

Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

Edit: One other thing: what format is that externa drive? iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.

  • IPhoto is unable to open this library

When I try to open my iPhoto library, I get the following message:
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."
I click "Upgrade" and then get the following error message:
"iPhoto is unable to open this library."
I am using iPhoto 9.2.1, Mac OS 10.7.2, on an old iMac 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4 GB of RAM.  My photos are stored on a Western Digital My World Book 2 network drive.  Multiple computers have accessed this iPhoto library over my home network with no issues.
This problem just developed this week.  I take all the software updates as they come along, but don't think anything was updated within the past 3 weeks.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

    Larry,
The problem seems isolated to one computer.  I am still able to access my iPhoto library from a second computer.  Do you know how I can force iPhoto look to a different library file?  I have tried holding down the Control key while launching iPhoto, but it doesn't seem to work for this.
Also, I have been able to use the WD drives with my iPhoto library.  The "My World Book 2" has always supported my iPhoto library.  I have a larger WD ShareSpace that recently got a firmware upgrade to support the Mac OS extended (journaled) format.  They call it Hierarchical File System + Journaled (HFS+J).
    Thanks for your help!

  • IPhoto '11 version 9.0.1 didn't fix"iphoto is unable to open this library"

I upgraded iPhoto to version 9.0.1 but I still have the same issue : iPhoto '11 is unable to open and update my photos library. After launching iPhoto, it tried to update the library but I got the message "iphoto is unable to open this library". I tried all the workaround mentioned by the members of this forum without success. I even rebuild my library with the maintenance mode of iPhoto '09 before trying again to update it with iPhoto '11.
What should I do? Am I the only one in this case with version 9.0.1 ?
I need to access back to my photos and I'm surprised Apple is yet unable to propose a workaround for bypassing this library updating issue. By the way, it is strange that for being able to update a defective library you need to run the rebuilding options, but for being able to rebuild the library with iPhoto '11, you need first to update it. We are in a dead end!

You are not alone! I have the exact same problem, and 9.0.1 didn't help me either.
iPhoto 9.0 originally gave me this error. I removed it and re-installed iPhoto 8, which opens gives errors about the library needing repair. After running some of the rebuilding options I got the library open but all items from 2010 are missing.
I then reinstalled iPhoto 9.0.1 and tried to open an older backup of my iPhoto library that works fine with iPhoto 8. That won't open either, with the same error message- "iPhoto is unable to open this library." So basically I can't use iPhoto 9.0.1 at all, and with my most current library trashed I will have to go back to my nearly year-old backup library (I know, my bad) and import all newer photos, which I fortunately have stored elsewhere, again.
Or more likely, I will keep using my "backup" library on my PC with Picasa until I can try another iPhoto update that will hopefully restore my damaged library (wishful thinking, I suspect!)

  • Adobe Reader doesn't open .pdf files anymore. Error: 213:11.

Adobe Reader doesn't open .pdf files anymore. It's written Error: 213:11. Details: laptop with Windows XP, Adobe Reader X

Are these local or online documents?  If online, in what browser?  If local, does the documents folder and docs themselves have sufficient permissions?
Is there anything else beside the number 213:11?

  • IPhoto 4 doesn't open

Just recently upgraded to Tiger. Now iPhoto 4 doesn't open. Is it not compatible?

Hi, Zevelhead. Did you repair permissions immediately after installing Tiger? If not, do so now.

  • Everytime I attempt to open iPhoto, a message comes up saying, "iPhoto is unable to open this library," and the only option if gives is to quit. How do I get it to open?

When I select iPhoto to open the application, a message comes up saying, "iPhoto is unable to open this library," and the only option available is to quit. I don't know what library iPhoto is attempting to open, but all I want to do is just start iPhoto over from scratch.

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' to find out what Library is in question. Use the 'Create Library' option to make a new one.
To try and repair the damaged one:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • APE8 doesn't open any projects anymore

My APE8 doesn't opene any projects anymore. In some cases it allows me to create a new project, but after shutting down the computer and restarting it the next day or so it cannot open the project I made th day before. As a matter of fact: it cannot open any project anymore.
After clicking to open the project a small window appears with a bar indicating the percentage the project has loaded. When the bar reaches 100% it disappears and nothing comes instead of it: the screen stays grey as shown in the screenshot.
There is a menu bar however.
In Adobe help and through Customer Support is searched for help as well. I worked my way throught 2 documents: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/515/cpsid_51584.html and http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/515/cpsid_51552.html. I both did them step by step. including the removal and re-installation of the software. Nothing helped, the results stay the same: projects do not open, and the screen stays grey.
    Can anybody help me?

    Hi Neale,
Thank you for being there again...
    I worked through your list:
Install all Windows Updates. (All updates are installed)
Install latest version of Apple QuickTime (v7.6.9 at time of writing). Even if you don't use QuickTime, PRE relies heavily on it. (I updated from 7.6.8 to 7.6.9)
•Install most recent graphics and sound drivers from the manufacturers web sites. (The most recent versions are installed: video: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670 V 8.631.0.0; sound ATI High Definition Audio Device V5.0.7000.4)
Free up at least 30GB, preferably 60GB disk space(130 GB available)
Run Disk Cleanup. (I did so)
    Run Defragmenter. (I did so)
Temporarily disable any anti-virus realtime scanning. (I use McAfee, and it is kind of hard to find the 'switch'... I haven't been able to switch it off yet.)
Tonight, when I started my computer up, APE worked. After closing APE and using the IE I could no longer open my project.
Sometimes I feel as if it might have something to do with a memory issue. As if there is not enough memory. I use a Dell Studio XPS 16 with Windows 7 and 4 GB memory and 1920x1080 resolution.

  • Iphoto doesn't recognize my library anymore

    Hi,
While creating a slideshow with iPhoto, my macbook suddenly freezed completely. I had to turn off the power to be able to use it again.
But now when starting iPhoto, I have to choose a library or create a new one. When I select my existing library and press Open, nothing happens.
I used iPhoto Library Manager trying to fix it, but it doesn't fix my slideshow which I need. iPhoto Library Manager does show my slideshow though.
How can I use iPhoto with my library again ?
Using Mac OS X 10.9.4 with iPhoto 9.5.1.
I already deleted a lock-file from the libraries' folder, but no change.
    Thanks in advance,
    Edwin

    2 different cases :
    1. not having a new library made : when I double-click with ⌥ + ⌘ in Finder, it still asks me to choose a library or create a new one
    2. having made a new library before .this is the new (empty) default library : Now when I double-click with ⌥ + ⌘ on the corrupted library, it asks me to repair. When I select Repair, it finished within a second an then starts importing photo's. I once let it finish, but the result was that I did not have my slideshow, but all my photo's in the new library.

My iPod doesn't open games anymore ((help))
It says need full iPod !!

Usually a hard reset of the device resolves this error.  A reset is equivalent to rebooting your PC.  To do the reset, first make sure the Hold switch is in the Off position, then press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.

  • Why a restored iPhoto lib doesn't open in 10.8 ?

    Hello,
After downgrading to 10.8, I can't open my restored iPhoto lib from TM, but I am asked to continue to do that with 10.9.
IPLM is nice to view the photos but all the books are gone! Is there any possibility to force iPhoto 11 to open the restored lib?
    david

    OK
remember that when you upgraded the library you were told that this was a one way streat and previous versions would not be able to open the library and you agreed to that.
the only solution is to go back to a backup of the  library for the version you are now using or to use IPLM to downgrade the library to version 8.4.3 which does not keep projects
Using the Time Machine applicaion go back in time before you pugraded to iPhoto 9.5 and restore the iPhoto library from there

  • Iphoto upgrader has caused a problem, iPhoto will no longer open its library

I had an old dvd of iphoto pictures which I wanted to bring into my current version of iphoto, I downloaded the iphoto upgrader and did as the instructions indicated but it seemed like I was in a loop, when I selected the library from the saved photos, the imac would indicate that I had to download the uopgrader (which I had, this is were it kept looping)  So after several attempts I gave up, but when I treid to open my existing iphoto it came back with the same mesage saying
To open your library with this version of iphoto, it first needs to be prepared.
to prepare the library, use the iphoto library upgrader avaialble from Apple
So now it seems I cant access my existing iphotos ( I cant even tell you what version of iphoto I have as I cannot look at the "About iphoto" as it is greyed out)  My imac is 2 years old.
Any help would be appreciated as I seem to have gotten myself into a hole and have no idea how I got there and more importantly how to get out.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a potential solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what do you get when you launch iPhoto?
    what fixes have you tried?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • IPhoto 9.2.1 doesn't open my library

I have just updated iPhoto from version 8.x.x to the latest version 9.2.1. Now iPhoto says it can't open because the media file is damaged. I have restored the iPhoto Library from Time machine - nothing has changed.Does anyone know how to read the iPhoto Library in this case or how to reinstall iPhoto 8.x.x?

Many thanks for your answer, Terence Devlin. However, I still have the same problem; I downloaded Library Manager, but when I try to apply the Rebuild function either to the original iPhoto Library or to the version restored from Time Machine I get the following message:
When I try to start IPhoto I get the following first message:
In English (in short): The library has to be actualised because the library file cannot be read any more after updating from an earlier version of iPhoto.
If I click on the "actualise" button, I get the following message:
In short: Your library is either used by another program or cannot be read any more, try to newly lay out the file.
Have you any idea how to go on? Thanks in advance

  • IPhoto 811 doesn't open

    Hello,
I really did search a lot, but didn't find anything like it. So basically my iPhoto after I updated just stopped working. Every time it says relaunch - and that doesn't help. My Library is intact (in pictures). I created a new one with iPhoto Library manager and tried to open it with iPhoto, but it didn't help.
So please help me. It is becoming very annoying.
PS: my now mac also refuses to install Eos solution disk (it hasn't done that before)
    looking forward to your replies,
    Paulius

Try this basic fix: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
If that doesn't help, Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.
    Regards

Deleted, reinstalled, even reinstalled Lion 10.7.2, no difference.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Did you trash the receipts before reinstalling?
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.
