IPhoto '08 HELP PLEASE!!

Hi people... I have iPhoto installed on my G5 Dual 2.0Ghz and my MacPro 3Ghz... i have all my personal photos on my G5 and work related pics on my MacPro. I recently took photos of a trip to London which I seem unable to export on my G5. I have used the keyboard and menu commands and still they won't export. This feature works perfect on my MacPro. I have tried to install iLife again on my G5 but it does bring up errors... I have installed all the updates and still no success. With iPhoto '06 there were individual folders with "Originals" and "Modified", but with iPhoto '08 this seems to have been replaced with one folder that is uneditable. Can anyone suggest a way that I can get the now current iPhoto '08 library onto my MacPro... as I have all my personal photo library on there... but I'm unable to export any of the pics... I can open them in photoshop and do it that way... but still would like to be able to import them onto my MacPro without overwriting all my existing content so that I can edit them using an iPhoto version that work in full. Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome.

Anthony:
I second Terence's recommendation of iPhoto Library Manager. It makes copying photos and metadata between libraries very easy.
The new library package can be opened like this. But Terence's TD's excellent treatis on file access is the safest way to access files.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto 09 Help please

    Hi
    1) Starting out on iPhoto 09.
At the moment all my photos are organised in folders, eg Holiday July 08, New year 07, Childs 4th B_day, Funfair March 05 etc etc
I would like to keep them in this order if possible, and start using iPhoto to tag, and organise them all.
Reason I want them still in folders is that I also have a Windows PC, Xbox 360, and want to be able to sort them on here to, which wont have iPhoto's organisation and so need the folder structure
    2) I want to start organizing, tagging etc my photos I have 1000's so its gonna be a big job.
Looking at tutorials on the web etc, it looks like in your Home folder it has edited versions and original versions of all pics that you have, so basically whatever size your library is, its twice the size (on the ones you've edited)
Is this correct? and is it worth keeping the originals? Photos (along with vids and music) is the one thing I want to backup separate to another HDD, along with the backup already using Time Machine, or is this overkill (ie just one copy on iMac and one in Time machine is enough)
So should I backup the iPhoto library with the originals and the edited in or just the final edited versions? what do others do please.
    3) Also if I have tagged everything in iPhoto, if I copy the actual pics to a Windows PC, does all the tagging go with the pics? eg as per iTunes I done a lot of tagging in there, but the tags are in the actual music file so when I play it on a Windows PC, Xbox 360 etc the tags are ok read by it, Also if I manually tag it in places, will it tag the Exif data, so for other apps to read this data? I cant seem to find it in the Exif data?
Hope can help before I start
    cheers

    iPhoto is not for you.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
iPhoto has no cross platform ability whatever.
You have no choice. Iphoto will always preserve your Original file. That’s how it works. It’s a Digital Asset Manager, and it will treat the Original file like an old photographer’s negative.
Also if I have tagged everything in iPhoto, if I copy the actual pics to a Windows PC, does all the tagging go with the pics?
No. You’ll need to export the pics from iPhoto to write the tags to the file metadata. This is not necessary to share on a Mac, part of “Having no cross platform ability whatever“.
Also, if you sort the files using your PC - or move, rename, or change the structure of the folders after the pics have been imported to iPhoto then iPhoto will not be able to find them.

  • Missing images iPhoto 11 - HELP PLEASE

So once again a huge amount of my images from iPhoto 11 have mysteriously disappeared from both my events and albums. I've done the photo Library First Aid (below) and it's not worked.
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
I've also tried to restore from my time machine but that hasn't worked either. I did have this problem a few months ago and fixed it using the methods above. I'm starting to panic now though as I have a huge amount of important images that I can no longer see of find.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Ok so to answer the question from CellarDwellr, yes I do have that box ticked. Ive also included a screen shot showing the black boxes. Ive also included screen shots showing what the albums and files look like/
    Events
    Albums
    Individual files
To Old Toad, my file size is just over 3GB. This is for around 5000 images. Ive also attached a screenshot of iPhoto info panel.
I hope this helps … as it will the obviously help me too!
    Merry Christmas

  • Some of my photo's won't enlarge in my recent update to iPhoto 11 help please.

I recently upgraded to iphoto 11 and some picture wont enlarge when you double click on them and also when I click on print in the left pane the program locks up.

    Hi jefffromnitro,
Try restarting your iMac and see if that solves the problem. If that doesn't work go to the menu bar and choose Apple > Software Update... . There may be an important iPhoto update that you've missed.
    Hope this helps,
    O.C.

  • Can i erase iphoto? Help please.

Hi guys, i have a mac mini 2011 that i bought not too long ago from a private dealer. Recently apple came out with a new version of iphoto, but, i can't update it because the person i bought this from is still logged into i photo and i don't know his password. So i came up with a plan but i am not sure if it would work. If i transfer all my photos to my flashdrive then delete i photo from my computer and downloand it again, will it work? and will it forget about his account? Can i even download iphoto for free?
    Thanks alot!

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • I Can't Open my iPhoto? HELP PLEASE

I can't open iPhoto and how can i get all the photos that i uploaded in iPhoto without opening iPhoto?

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

  • Convert photos on DVD  to iPhoto format Help Please

I made a DVD on iDVD of all my photos from a trip to Central Australia.
I wrongly assumed that this would provide a backup.
My Hard Drive crashed and I lost all the originals.
How can I convert the photos on the DVD back to iPhoto format?

    Hello, captncruise,
    Welcome to the discussions.
Sorry that you had a drive crash.
Remember the three rules of computering:
    1. Back up
    2. Back up
    3. and Back up again.
Get an external drive and back up your entire iPhoto Library! Right now!
What did you have on the DVD....iPhoto slideshow? iMovie of photos? Slideshow created in iDVD? Or, you burned the photos to the DVD-ROM area? If it is the latter, you can just open the ROM file and drag the photos out in their full resolution, so I am assuming that you did not do this.
If the photos are within an iDVD project, you can retrieve them, but you will lose significant resolution. You will need to use another application to extract the video. You can use Handbrake, or MPEG Streamclip to convert the video clips to DV format and you can 'Save Frame' as JPEG for each photo. However, the results are very grainy and not clear.
You might want to look into something like these: http://www.xilisoft.com/dvd-snapshot-mac.html
    http://www.imtoo.com/dvd-to-picture-mac.html
I have not used these...and I am skeptical of anything that says it can produce stunning photos, but they are not too expensive, $25 and might be worth it to you to retrieve your precious photos, even in cruder form.

  • Problem with Iphoto library help please

I had a hard drive crash the other day. It had all of my iphoto images on it. I purchased a new hard drive and went into time machine and dragged the icon that says iphoto library back to my new drive. It took a while to copy. Now when I click on iphoto library I get no images in iphoto.
If I get info on the iphoto icon it says that the file size is 26.95 gb. so it sounds like the stuff is there but not coming up. What if anything can I do?

    benelaxe
More of a Time Machine question, really. I don't use it myself, but my guess is there's rather more to restoring from the back up that just dragging.
You could try holding down the option (or alt) key and launching iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to this library. If iPhoto sees a valid Library there it will open. If it doesn't, then that's not a valid library and check on the Time Machine forum for details on restoring it.

  • Help please. I just downloaded Maverick. I have IPhoto 9.3 how do I fix it?

I have IPhoto 9.3 and have just downloaded OS X.
    Now I can't access Iphoto.
    Help please !  Thanks.

IPhoto 9.3 is incompatible with MAvericks. Update iPhoto to iPhoto 9.5.1 from the AppStore. Sign into the AppStore with your AppleID and download the update from the "Updates" page.
Make sure, that iPhoto is installed in the Applications folder and simply named "iPhoto" for the updater to see it.

HHi, I recently got a newer desktop to replace my older laptop and I upl my pics from my picture keeper and I see them in images but I can't find iPhoto! Help please.

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?  A new iMac will have Yosemite. Confirm.
what system version are you running? Download iPhoto 6 from the App store.  Did you?
what do you mean by "picture keeper"?
have you looked in the Applications folder for an iPhoto application?
is your iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder ?

How can I get Time Machine to back up an external hard drive (iPhotos) that is attached to airport extreme base station. Note: Time machine is usb to macbook pro and external drive with iphotos is usb to airport extreme base station. Help please. Thanks!

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

  • My latest import photos are missing from my iphoto library but still on my ipad, how do I get them back into iphotos. I very frustrated because i just imported them from my camera and have not been able to go thru and edit the ones I want. Help please

I recently imported pictures from my camera to iphoto. I also synced my ipad. In less than 24 hours my photos are now missing from iphoto even after trying to sync my ipad again. These pictures are from a very special occasion and I did not even get time to edit. Someone help please

    -Background-
My issue, which I resolved and may help you was the following:
I have an IPAD 3. I took over 5 GB of pictures on a third party camera. The car was full so I imported those pictures to my IPAD 3 and deleted them from the SD card. While on IOS 5.x, the photos on the IPAD were there under last imported.
Over the last few days, I upgraded to IOS 6. No issues.
Then, my family wanted to see the pictures from the trip. I went to the IPAD and could not find the photos. It listed 40 photos only. The last imported was there, but listed as empty. When I went into the settings>usage, it listed 5GB + of photos in the photos area. I was confused. I plugged my IPAD into ITUNES, first thinking I would get a backup asap (icloud was full after importing the photos). Then I though I would downgrade to IOS 5.
Also, itunes listed that I had 40 photos only, but 5GB of OTHER data. I was convinced the data was not lost. When I tried to browse the IPAD 3 using windows browser, the photos where NOT in the DCIM folder, so I was not able to simply "FIND" the photos and copy them to my PC.
    -SOLUTION-
I downloaded third party software onto my PC called "http://www.i-funbox.com/" I fun box. I had no idea if this would work, but other forums with other issues called out similar products for iphone issues.
When I installed the program, which was free, and so far free of malware, I started  to explore my IPAD file system.I found my photos, under IPAD>RAW file system>DCIM>100IMPRT.
    -ROOT CAUSE-
I suspect when I upgraded to IOS 6, apple fails to register the IMPORT folder of photos as such, photos. So the file system in IOS looses sight of what is inside the last imported folder. Essentially removing them from applications such as "Photos". Why windows does not seem them, is beyond me. But the program I found did see them in raw format, and I was able to COPY them to my PC. Then I deleted them from the IPAD, because I had no other way of managing this folder in IPAD, and it was using a lot of space.

I accidentally removed iphoto from dock, please help?
iPhoto isn't in my applications to I can't drag it to dock.  All images and movies are still on Mac (heart did stop as I thought I'd lost everything and nearly cried) but I don't know how to get iPhoto back.  I'm worried about trying different things as don't want to lose anything on Mac.  Noticed that I haven't been using Time Machine and bought a couple of years ago so not sure what operating with.  I have our 2 CDs from when we bought the Mac - 13-inch Macbook Pro (Mac OS X Install DVD) and 13 inch MacBook Pro (Applications Install DVD).  My photos are not backed up so not sure if I need to do this first - can I back up to iCLoud or do I need newer software?
Any help would be greatly appreciated - need lots of step by step instructions though!

All images and movies are still on Mac
Of course they are.  Deleting an app doesn't delete the files that's in it.
