Iphoto 08 image corruption- Spot heal tool

I have retouched a batch of tiff photos using the Spot healing tool. I was perfectly happy with the quality of the edit as i saved them. On reopening the images later i noticed that there are blurred/distorted marks all over the images. I can revert to the original images and undo all corruptions, including retouch edits. Again i have retouched the images and again the same problem occurs.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Make sure you're running the latest Quicktime version. Also run Disk Utility and verify your HD. If repairs are indicated you'll need to boot into the system install disk and run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Spot Healing Tool???

I hope someone can answer my question.....
I downloaded a trial version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 to use the Spot Healing Tool but that is all I need it for so paying $160 for this product is not an option.
Is there a tool in Iphoto or some other free software for mac I can use for this same purpose, to remove blemishes or scrapes or whatever from faces in pictures?
    Thanks
    Patrick

I wish there were a way to delete your own posts.....
Once I played around with Iphoto I found the spot healing tool and it worked just as well as photoshop.
    Awesome!!!!!!

  • Elements 13 Spot Healing Tool - freezes & leaves black spot on image

I am using Elements 13 on a Mac, doing substantial spot healing in restoring old images.
The healing tool regularly seems to have a delay in responding and then leaves a dark spot on the image.  When I 'undo' to remove it, the spot occasionally extends down to the bottom right with a smudged line.
Is this happening to anyone else?
Any tips on how to prevent this?

  • Spot Healing tool in Elements 9 causes program crash

I have installed Photoshop Elements 9 on a computer running Windows 7 Professional. Installation was unevenful, and the program runs without problem until the spot healing tool is selected. Clicking over an image imperfection causes a dark circle to appear, then the whole screen goes pale, the 'busy' circle appears and everything stops.  Machine operation can only be recovered by closing the application.
I have re-installed twice and the same thing happens each time.
I cannot find any other problems.
I'm reluctant to pay for this product until it works!

" it really looks as if the spot healing tool is defective."
    Same problem here, Windows XP.
Paid application online, downloaded and installed program, started up and everything is working properly UNTIL
    content aware function is accessed.
Program terminates by itself and reports and error to Microsoft.
Anyone knows a solution to this problem?

My spot healing tool gets stuck and freezes and won't keep up with the curser. I'm using LR4.

Remove the song in question from the sync list and see if the rectifies the problem.
If it does, then iTunes believes the song no longer exists on your drive and that will need to be corrected.

  • SPOT HEALING TOOL CRASHES PROGRAM PSE9

Please help. I used to have Elements 7. I finally was able to purchase Elements 9. I installed it and quickly began to use it as I have wedding photos to edit.  However, each time I press the "Spot Healing" tool. PSE 9 Crashes. I can use the others just fine so it seems. I need that SPOT HEALING!!! Someone please help me

Make sure you have the correct settings for the task. In the options bar you have three choices: proximity, content aware or texture. Also check the box sample all layers if you are working on more than the background layer.
Otherwise select the tool and try a reset.

  • How do I clean up a dirty drawing using spot heal tool?

I have a scan of a drawing, ink with washes. I need to clean up the smudged paper and old white out. I thouhg spot heal would do the trick. It doesn't do much, Don't know how to adjust the tool to really get it to work. Please help.

    Hi there
Here's a quick video that covers how to use the Spot Healing Brush Tool:
If you're still having problems with the Spot Healing Brush Tool, you may want to try using the Healing Brush Tool. This tool allows for more refined spot clean-up, as I will demonstrate below.
The Healing Brush Tool is located below the Spot Healing Brush Tool. Just click and hold on the Spot Healing Brush Tool and select the Healing Brush Tool from the flyout menu.
The Healing Brush works by pulling information from a spot on your image that you choose. So, in your case, you'll want to define your source from a clean area of your paper. Photoshop will use this area to paint over other areas of your image.
So to start, Alt-click (hold down the Alt key on your keyboard as your click) on a clean area of the paper.
Now, simply click and drag over an area of your paper with smudges or imperfections. Photoshop will automatically blend the source area you defined in the previous step with where you are painting over.
As you go along, you'll see a small crosshair following your brush. This is showing you the area that Photoshop is copying from. You may need to redefine your source area as you go along. To do this, just Alt-click on a new area of your image.
You may find that the Healing Brush Tool is much more refined that then Spot Healing Brush Tool! Below is a video that shows you how to use the Spot Healing Brush Tool.
    Cheers!

  • Clone, spot healing tool, content aware will not work on 11 or 12

The following tools will not work on PSE 11 or 12: clone, spot healing, content aware. Using 3 yr old iMac with latest OS. Same problem on Mac Book. I must be something wrong.

I'm not sure what was going on. I eneded up discarding the photo I was working on and open up another one and everything worked. I guess just a little hitch in it's gitty-up!
    Thanks for your comments.

  • Photoshop elements 12 freezes in Yosemite when attempting to select the spot heal tool.

The program freezes and must be force quit. Photoshop Elements 8 still seems to work alright.

Yes, I am having the same issue.     Here is the FIX for now...Use a mouse until they fix this issue (only touchpad fails)
I found the answer tonight online while searching but forgot to save the link, but it works...  Use a mouse until they fix this issue as it only applies to some and only to the touchpad.  Use a mouse the app works fine.  Enjoy...
I pick a brush to start painting, start to paint and it freezes.  Must force quit.  I have the new 15" mac book pro with retina and extra video card.  This is my first mac as I have always been a windows person.  Always heard macs never have a problem.  What a bunch of liars...  This sucks.  PS... most adobe products I have owned and used over the years have normally provided good reliable quality...

  • Why won't the Clone/Heal Tool remove a white spot?

After being embarrassed by failing to check the Clone/heal tool to make sure the opacity was set correctly, I am encouraged to ask another question that was not affected by the appropriate correction that made the tool work fine under most circumstances. However, using LR4 (and previously LR 3) )iMac 27 quad) at odd intervals, certain images show up with a single white spot, usually on a blue background, that cannot be removed or cloned with the LR Clone/heal tool. It can be removed with the clone tool in PS but not in LR. I don't know where the spots come from. They sometimes show up in a sequence of 3-4 or just singly. A copy of one is attached here. I don't know if this spot is an aberation in LR or from my cameras. Since it's happened with different cameras, I presume this is some problem with LR. Any comments?

OK. Now I'm doubly embarrassed! You were right again! It was a random adjustment brush stroke that I easily deleted. Now all I have to do is figure out how it got there and avoid doing it again. The same exact spot has been showing up on various images over the last few years in approximately the same place. There are no other adjustment brush strokes on the image. I guess it could have gotten there when I used the brush on other images nearby and forgot to close it before going to the Basic Development section on the new image. I'll probably never figure it out but thanks to your help I can certainly fix it now in LR. FYI, a moment ago I intentionally put a white spot in the blue with the Adjustment Brush and then tried to remove it with the Spot/Heal Tool. I discovered that without a lot of playing around I couldn't even circle the spot with the tool. I only got the hand symbol. There must be some relationship between the two that I haven't seen documented.

  • Spot Removal Tool and cropped images

When I crop an image and then decide I want to use the Spot Removal Tool I end up having to undo the crop before I use the Tool. Why? Because if I crop first and then use the Tool the selected replacement area often comes from outside the crop. If LR5 gets the choice wrong (it's not perfect, I accept that) then I have to undo the Spot Removal, undo the crop, guess what I need to Spot Remove, use the Tool and then Crop again.
Can you fix this to ensure that the Spot Healing Tool only uses replacement areas from WITHIN the crop? Many thanks.

What I do is to zoom out (usually 4:1).  Then move the mouse cursor outward along the direction of the line connecting the source area (not visible) and destination (visible) area until the mouse cursor turns into the hand.  Then I'll drag the source area back into the cropped image where it becomes visible.  Finally, zoom back in and move the source area to the location of my choosing.
    Hope that helps.

  • CS6 content aware fill and spot healing smudge

I just upgraded to CS6 64 bit under Windows 7.  I used content aware fill and the spot healing tool on CS5 under XP with no problems.  Now under CS6 they leave a smudge.  For example, if the is a spot on a vein of a leaf, now, instead of removing the spot and filling in the line of the vein I just get a smudge the size of the spot healing brush.
Content aware fill now leaves a smudged and obviously poor result.
Is there some new option or behavior under CS6 that I need to understand to fix this or is this simply a bug?
Thanks for any and all help.
    Selby

I have been experimenting and have found out something more.  Previously, before doing a content aware fill operation I would create a new layer at the top of the layer stack that was a merge of all layers below it (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-E) and the content aware fill operation worked very well.
In CS6 it now appears to me that it still gets influenced by the lower layers in the stack, despite the fact that it is operating on the merge of those layers.  If I duplicate the image, and then flatten the duplicate, the content aware fill operation then in some cases works as I would expect.  I then duplicate the layer back to my original image, delete the parts I don't need and put it at the top of the stack in my original image.
So something appears to have changed in CS6 and it might be a bug.

  • Spot Removal tool should be an extension of the Adjustment Brush

I am glad that LR is taking steps in the right direction to improve the Spot Removal tool with the new Healing Brush feature. However, I agree with others that the interface needs improvement. Though I am probably not the first, I feel I have the solution:
Integrate the Spot Removal tool into the Ajustment Brush tool. Here's why.
I think an improved interface for the Spot Removal brush tool (Q) already mostly exists in the in the form of the Adjustment Brush (K), and indeed the two tools should share the best of their respective features and controls. The current Adjustment Brush has most of the features we are looking for in the Healing Brush:
Pre-brushing Size of brush (already implemented in the Spot Removal tool)
    Pre-brushing Feathering control
Pre-brushing Flow/Density control (already implemented in the Spot Removal tool as Opacity)
Partial erasure of selected brush stroke masks, while maintaining the above brush controls (by holding the ALT key in Windows, aided by making the Mask Overlay visible (O))
Pre- and Post-brushing adjustments of each Spot Removal brushstroke for White Balance, Tone (Exposure, Contrast, Saturation, etc), Sharpness, etc.
Adding the above features would be an incredibly useful approach to the Spot Healing tool, and would be a natural extension of the interface we already are familiar with. Both the Adjustment Brush and Spot Removal tools could be further improved by these additional features:
Post-brushing Size of circular brush (already implemented in the classic Spot Removal tool)
Post-brushing Size of painted brushstroke (supposedly already newly implemented in the LR5 Beta Spot Removal tool, though I haven't been able to get it to work on mine)
    Post-brushing Feathering control
Post-brushing repositiong of painted brushstroke (already implemented in the classic Spot Removal tool)
In summary, the Spot Removal tool should really be an extension of the Adjustment Brush. They should live in the same control panel (with a Clone or Heal ON/OFF toggle switch). The Adjustment Brush could benefit a bit from the addition of a couple of the existing post-brushing features of the Spot Removal tool.
The two tools are really one tool, they just don't know it yet. Let's introduce them to itself.

A few weeks ago, I posted the silly graphic above. It is a Venn diagram of my interpretation of Lightroom 5 Beta's three main local adjustment tools' strengths, weaknessess, and overlapping powers. Each tool - the Adjustment Brush, the Spot Repair & Advanced Healing Brush, and the Graduated & Radial Filter - has one or more discreete powers or traits. The three tools each overlap a neighboring tool in an important aspect (e.g. the Adjustment Brush and the Advanced Healing Brush can each be used to paint any freehand shape to be adjusted). By default, the descreet "Super Power" of one tool is a "Super Weakness" of each of the other two, which lacks that power (e.g. the user can make additions or partial erasures to any mask overlay with the Adjustment Brush, but neither the Advanced Healing Brush nor The Radial Filter has this power).
In the very center of the diagram is the overlap of all three of the local adjustment tools. In this triple-overlapped zone, there is currently no existing tool. I theorize that there could be a special sort of new local adjustment tool, which combines all of the powers (and none of the weaknesses) of the individual tools of which it is composed. Inspired by the notion of cartoon supeheroes teaming up to combine their powers, I gave it the tongue-in-cheek name "Super Friends Awesomesauce Brush". However, my vision for such a tool is completely serious. Basically, I envision it as an "Advanced Adjustment Brush"
    For example:
Paint a shape on the image with a feathered brush. (A transparent colored mask overlay guides the user in the same way that the traditional Adjustment Brush does, as lollololli correctly suggests above as an easier way to paint a selection.)
Pick up that brushstroke with the mosue and place it in another part of the image.
Enlarge or reduce the overall size of the brushstroke with the Size slider.
Increase or decrease the overall feathering of that brushstroke's edges with the Feather slider.
Erase with the freehand erasure brush the portions of the mask that you don't wish to interact with the image.
Convert that brushstroke into a healing repair.
Resize that repair shape larger or smaller, and/or change its aspect and rotation as needed. (Transformations to the shape of the target brushstroke, not necessarily transformations of the shape of the healed or cloned sample pixels)
Increase or decrease the exposure or color temperature of the repair.
    Or,
Create a new Radial Filter on the image.
Adjust the exposure, white balance, Gaussian blur, etc. of the filter.
Subtract from that Radial Filter by erasing with a second erasing Radial Filter at the same pin-level
Add back to the Radial Filter with a freehand feathered brush as desired
    Or,
Maximise the brush size and minimize the feather setting and paint a solid mask overlay over the entire image.
Convert the mask overlay to a Clone repair - you have now created a second duplicate layer of the entire image on top of the original (BTW you can already do this step with the Advanced Healing Brush set to Clone and size 100 in LR5 Beta).
Subtract from that clone repair with a Radial Filter erasure to create a "hole" that shows the base image underneath.
Make independent exposure, white balance, and sharpening adjustments for both the base image (seen through the Radial Filter subtraction "hole") as well as the cloned top layer.
Reposition and resize the Radial Filter erasure as needed.
Add to and/or erase from either the Radial Filter erasure or the cloned top layer with radial filter shapes or freehand brushstrokes as desired.
I see this proposed Advanced Adjustment Brush as a very powerful localized adjustment tool. Although It really isn't a new tool at all, because it is almost completely based on the existing local adjustment tools. Additional enhancements (more geometric shapes such as polygons) could take its flexibility even further.
