IPhoto 08, Leopard and multiple users
I just installed Leopard. Under Tiger, I have tried unsuccesfully to share my IPhoto library with other users on my computer. In particular, I tried article 304890: "iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users". Has anything changed with Leopard ?

Many people using the Shared Folder find that they have permissions issues which mean that they 'other' user can't see some part of the Library. Therefore, if you want to share the Library in that way it's best moved to an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set to ignore ownership and permissions.
can both users add photos from their iPhones via iPhoto on their respective accounts and have the new photos show up on the other users iPhoto app?

If you set this up corrrectly - You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
You will need to do this in both accounts.
would timemachine back the data up automatically?
TM can be set to back up externals. There are other options too, of course.
when I upgrade to a new computer will everything work the same.
Yes. Just plug in the extenal and point iPhoto at the external from the new machine.

Hello, I have iMac Itel i3, from Oct, 2010 and have OS 10.6.7 and multiple users.
About 3-4 days ago the Mail icon in dock had question mark and was accidently removed, along with program on my user. Oops.
1. Mail 4.4 is on other users and works fine, but for me it does not work and tells me V4.3 does not work with latest OS X.
2. I reloaded software from my user with original disks (Oct, 2010) and got Mail 4.3 again. Mail 4.3 did not work with latest OS. I am unable to load Mail. Gives Yellow error message.
" You have Mail version 4.3 (1081/1084). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.7 (Build 10J869). For more information, click the Help button."
3. Tried to update software and look for update for mail 4.3 on Apple site to no success.
Hate to go to MS-Entorage ( I may need to learn something new and alien) mail program since contracts are in Mail/Address Book.
Ideas?

I have a 27inch iMac with snow leopard and 1 user, and a 24 inch (older) upgraded to yosemite and 5 users. I want to wipe the 27 inch and transfer everything on the 24 to it. I do have time capsule 3tb but not sure how to do it

object_schema - The schema of the object to be audited. (If NULL, the current log-on user schema is assumed.)
in case if you like to audit for multiple users - then try to test by holding a null value and test access the important tables -where the relevant auditing records are generated as per your requirement or not. i have not tested.. try it

IPhoto, a large library, and Multiple users
I am new to the Mac platform. We have an iMac with four accounts on it. My main photo system right now is a PC. I copy the photos on multiple machines for convenience and because it makes for a great backup. I have a way in which I copy all new photos taken to the Mac and I want to do the following:
1) Have the pictures (about 20,000) available to all users of the Mac without them being duplicated for each users
2) have iPhoto auto recognize when new photos are available (I can either drop the photos to the Mac from the PC (easiest since I have sync software) or have the Mac mapped to the PC and have them copied in. I want it to know they are there like Picasa can with a watch folder

For iPhoto 09 (version 8.0.2) and later:
What you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc.
Quit iPhoto in both accounts. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
In each account in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both accounts will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

You can't. iPhoto doesn't work this way. But you can set foldr actions and apple scripts and/or automator actions to do it, or more easily, use a wee app like Hazel

I didn't know it was broken. It all depends on how you go about it. If you are just sharing libraries between multiple users with their own library that's one thing. But if you all want to use the same library then take a look at the following ways to do it. The preferred way is Apple's using an external HD connected to the computer with the ownership to the HD turned off like this.

There's one more way to share the same photos in multiple libraries but have only one copy of the original file on the HD. That's to use iPhoto in the alias mode and have the source photos in the shared folder. This way each user can have their own unique library with different edits, slideshows, albums, etc. However, each new addition of photos should be in their own clearly marked folder (I use something like this: 08/17-25/07-Honduras Trip) so the other users can tell which are the newly added source files. Also, when a user deletes a photo from their library it is not deleted from the HD. That has to be done via the Finder. So someone should be delegated as the keeper of the Source files. Tutorials #3 describes how it's done and applies to iPhoto 7 as well. I'm in the process of writing a tutorial on converting an iPhoto 7 library over to an alias based one. It's a little easier and can recover not only the keywords but the comments and titles.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. How Can I Share iPhoto Library/Keywords Among Multiple Users
Hi there! I am having a bit of a dilemma where I am trying how I can have several users access a shared iPhoto library (as well as retain their own personal iPhoto libraries). Basically, I have a handful of (three) users that need to be able to store/search against a common shared photo library - ideally, in iPhoto.
I understand that I can share albums through iPhoto (users are using a mix of iPhoto '08 and '09) on one account as long as iPhoto is running - a serious drawback. When I tried sharing photos via this method I was able to see the shared albums; however the keywords that were defined for those photos were not available. This presents two questions:
1) Can iPhoto share its library among multiple users (including keywords, etc) so that if a user account (let's call it "media") shares out selected albums that the viewing users (user1 and user2) can search against the keywords in the host library? Or is this not possible with iPhoto?
2) Is there another way of sharing photos that is more efficient and can be hosted on our private servers? The interface in iPhoto is amazing - and if there was an application that allowed for that same sort of feel/tagging we would be good to go...Well here is the weird thing. If I was sharing out the library from my computer, I could search for the keywords (and obtain results) as expected. However, if I went to another computer that was viewing my shared library, searching by the same keyword did not return any results.

The event library and multiple users in the classroom
Is there any way I can stop the event library loading old footage or footage from another project in imovie. Is there any way i can have 3 or 4 movies on the go in separate files.
I have ten macbooks for my class of thrity kids. We have two users on the computer Admin and Student. All students use the student side, every time imovie opens it gets old footage and events from iphoto and by the end of each term there is 8 to 10 gigs of footage on the go at any one time. imovie HD allowed save, file open and movement of movies. imovie 08/09 seems brilliant for snow boarders and you tubers but not the classroom. Really we would love an editing package that allows attachment of camera and work for a couple of weeks on a project while others do the same thing on the same mac. Please don't suggest multiple users we have over 200 macs and 600 students.Without multiuser, the only of having an exclusive event library for each student would be either external drive, or a blank disk image to store iMovie events. I can imagine a large network drive that has 50GB size disk images for each students. You mount your image to work with your footage.
By the way you can move event library to other drive within iMovie, so you can back up and disconnect external drive to unclutter event library. -
Iphoto/preview crashing with multiple user accounts
Hi everybody,
I'm stuck for a while now with my iMac and parental controlled user accounts.
It's for a few months now iPhoto and Preview keep crashing at starting up in these other accounts.
All works fine in my own administrator account. I'll copy a the first part of the crash state, maybe that will help.
I think the problem started with connecting a photocamera (Sony W125) directly to the computer.
It seems that viewing pictures (PDF/iphoto) is corrupted in this way.
I'm working on an late 2011 iMac 2,5 Ghz Intel Core i5 /12GB 1333 / OSX 10.7.5
Allready done:
removed plists
repaired permissions
re-installed Lion
re-installed iPhoto
give full permissions too all other accounts (checking out parental control i.o.w.)
made a new user acount with full permissions except administrator function (also crashes of iPhoto)
tried some searching in Root-account but where afraid to damage stuff.
looked around on the web but I couldn't find people with the same problem

1) Set up Mac1 for myself only
2) Set up Mac2 for the wife and kid
3) Set up each Mac to backup to the Airport base station using Time Machine (this would create two separate backups on the Airport base station's drive, which from what I've read has its own problems)
4) On Mac1 setup "empty user accounts" for the wife and kid. These will not have any files in them - just an access mechanism. If they want to access their files, they can use Time Machine's "The Browse Other Backup Disks Option" to get their file from Mac2, work on it and then drop it in the Shared Folder. Next time they are on Mac2, remember to copy the updated/created file from the Shared Folder into their Mac2 user account. If possible, get Time Machine to not backup the "empty user accounts".
5) Do the same for me on Mac2.
Not the most elegant solution, but until Apple get off their backside and make this seamless, I can't think of anything else :-( .
P.S. iCloud is not a soluton since it costs hundreds of dollars a year, uses up intenet data allowance and is slow. -
Mac OS X maintenance scripts and multiple user accounts
Hi everyone
Just wondering how the default maintenance scripts scheduled to run in the early morning works with multiple user accounts. Our Macs at home all have multiple user accounts (one for each of us) and I'm wondering whether the scripts work their magic across all accounts (assuming the computer itself is switched on AND not asleep).
Also, is the behaviour the same regardless of Mac OS X version? More specifically we're using snow leopard, lion, mountain lion, and maybe shortly mavericks.

Joe.The maintenance scripts run by periodic perform system tasks. They do nothing in a user's account (unless you modify the scripts or create your own). They are primarily designed for long lived systems (servers). There isn't any magic nor would a normal mac users find any differences whether they ran or not.
In all the operating system versions that you mention, the scripts will run when the computer wakes, assuming that the computer was turned on before the prescribe times. -
Problem with iTunes and multiple user accounts in Windows
I am running iTunes on a PC (Windows XP) and have multiple user accounts. When I switch between user accounts and try to open iTunes, I get a message that tells me I can't open the program because another user is using it. Is it really true that I can only have iTunes open in one user account at a time on a PC with multiple user accounts ?!? If not, what am I doing wrong?
You are right, can only have one open. You have to log out of a user before logging in to another user to use iTunes. Do not use the fast user switching ability of Windows.

Help with icloud and multiple users in iTunes
Our family music is under my iTunes/apple id. My mother, husband and I all synch to iTunes on one computer. Can we set up multiple icloud accounts for synching our contacts separately?
Yes, that's the usual advice - everyone use the one itunes account and each user has his/her own icloud account.

IPhoto Library Sharing by Multiple Users on Same Computer
Is there a "tried and true" way to set up iPhoto08 to allow my wife and I to share/access the Photo Library? I prefer not to set up external drive for library. It appears that photos I download from camera to iPhoto on my "login" do not load to the library on my wife's login and vise/versa.

JeffThere are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.

(Some people have had success putting the library in the Users/ Shared folder. If you do this make sure the file permissions are set to allow read/write access to everyone.)

Problems with 1 icloud account and multiple users.
We have multiple users all on 1 icloud so we can share apps but also see what people have installed and because IT control the password its upto us what apps get installed. So in that sense this was a good idea. The problem we are having is that the iphone users photos, messages and other things are becoming available on other iphones on this 1 icloud account. So for example one user went on her photos to discover someone elses photos was in their and then also had messages from a contact who only her manager has (also one of the icloud users)
Is there any settings we could change to keep the 1 icloud acount but make it so peoples photos and messages dont sync.Yes, you can turn off photos in icloud. (settings - icloud- photos)
You can also allow users to use their own apple id's for imessages and facetime. Unlike icloud those can be changed any time, so that does not present security problem. Settings -messages and settings- facetime.
If you dead set on using same apple id, you can make sure that every user only has their phone number checked in messages, so everyone has to go to settings- messages- send and receive and uncheck apple id. -
Home Sharing and multiple Users
We have one Mac with one user (me) and another Mac with two other users. If we have Home Sharing turned on for all three users, should each user be able to see the other two iTunes libraries, or will only the currently logged in user on the 2-user computer be available? Example: If User 1 is logged in, can they get User 2's library, and can I get both User 1's and User 2's libraries from the other computer?
And does iTunes have to be launched on a given computer for its library to show up on another computer, or will my iTunes find the library where it resides on the other computer even if their iTunes is not on?It is not really practical for multiple users on different PCs to use the same library database. This is because the iTunes database is not multiuser, the can however share the same content files.
So each PC will need it's own library database (iTunes Library.itl) which in this case is best located on the users own PC.
