IPhoto '08 not recognising a library

Hi
I've been using iPhoto '08 for a couple of weeks. I have 2 iPhoto libraries, a 2007 one and a pre-2007 one. iPhoto '08 converted both of them to its new package format the first time I opened them.
So far so good; I use the 2007 library on a day-to-day basis and it's fine.
However I can't get iPhoto to recognise the pre-2007 library. It won't open it if I hold down option and click the "Choose library" option - the pre-2007 library is there, but is greyed out and can't be selected. I get the same thing with iPhoto Library Manager.
The permissions of both libraries are identical, and I can right-click on both of them and do Show package contents, and the structure looks fine.
I'm not panicing because I can always "expand" the package, and re-import the photos that way, but I'd rather not do that as I'd prefer to keep the iPhoto library structure.
The library I'm having problems with resided on an external disk for a while before I copied it back onto the laptop hard drive, but I can't open it from the external drive either.
Any suggestions?
Regards
Glenn.

Glen:
Download and run BatChmod on the problem iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name, long or short, in the owner and group sections. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. See if that will help at all.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto does not recognise iPhone since upgrade to iOS 5.1

iPhoto does not recognise iPhone since upgrade to iOS 5.1. Have tried every suggestion I could find but to no avail. Using iPhoto 9.3 and IOS 5.1. This has only started happening since upgrade to IOS 5.1
Image capture does not recognise iPhone device either, yet iTunes synchronises ok

Any helpful suggestions to resolved this issue welcome!

  • IPhoto does not recognise camera since synching with new iPhone

Ever since I've setup my new iPhone, Iphoto will not recognise my camera (Panasonic DMC-FX36); even though it recognises the iPhone camera OK. I've previously used the Panasonic camera without a problem and this has only started happening since synching the iPhone for the first time (not sure if this is coincidence or not).
I can't find anything in iPhoto that suggests any settings have changed... I've also tested an older camera (Canon iX series) and found the same problem.
Most frustrating as I have a heap of photo's of my newborn daughter and no way to share them... and a sinking feeling that I may lose them... any suggestions appreciated.
    Cheers

Thanks, I should have mentioned that I've tried Image Capture without luck...i.e. no device connected. The Camera actually asks for the prompt PC or Pictbridge... I've always selected PC, now the camera just freezes after I select the PC option... I have a card reader in my printer, but same problem, device not recognised.... Do you suspect it would be the camera or the iPhoto app?

  • Itunes does not recognise my library

I have my itunes library on a NAS. This morning I have tried to open Itunes and it does not recognise the library - it is asking me either to create a new library or to choose another library. When I try to link it to my existing library, I cannot select the library as it is greyed out.
This very same thing happened a few weeks ago and at that point i decided to rebuild the library. I wondered if anyone knows if they have had a similar experience, or why it is happening?
    thanks

I also am having this problem. It seems Apple has decided what's best for us, and your system will automatically switch the library location back to your hard drive on the MAC if it is unable to find the NAS library or if the NAS is turned off. This causes EXTREME frustration, because when you have TONS of music on your NAS, you then have to re-direct the library location back to the NAS manually, and it takes a LONG time for the MAC to reorganize the library. Plus if you inadvertantly loaded new music into your library after the location was moved back to your hard drive, you'll now have music in two different locations and consolitdating them is another huge time suck.

  • IPhoto 08 not recognising iPhoto library

    Hi,
Wanting to have a backup of all my photos, I copied the iPhoto Library to an external drive. After doing this I figured that I'd better check that just copying the folder was sufficient, so I Option+Clicked on iPhoto and selected Choose Library. I navigated to the location of the backup but was then unable to select it. I thought this wouldn't be a huge problem, because I could just reset the location to my original library. However, when I try and choose it, iPhoto doesn't recognise my original library either.
I've tried creating a new library through iPhoto and then replacing the actual iPhoto Library file with the copy but that doesn't work. I have noticed that when I've created a new library, the file has an iPhoto icon and doing a Get Info shows that it opens with iPhoto. My original and copy have just a plain white icon, as though no application is associated with them. Dragging them to iPhoto opens iPhoto but it doesn't recognise that there are any photos or any keywords etc.
    What do I do?
I really don't want to lose Keyword info on over 15,000 photos!
    Any help is much appreciated!

This sounds like iPhoto is not finding a valid database file inside the library. It looks like your db got damaged, and that you then backed up the damaged db. Have you had a recent crash or kernal panic?
Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. If not, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • IPhoto will not open - says: Library created with unreleased version

I can't even open the app. due to a message that reads "The photo library was created with an unreleased version of iPhoto. Please quit and update this photo library by opening it in iPhoto 2 or iPhoto 4." I haven't done anything to the library recently. I did install Photoshop Elements and upgrade to OS 10.5 within the last few days. I got the same message in iPhoto before the upgrade to OS 10.5 however. Can anyone help me get my iPhoto open?

    Olla:
Give Terence's suggestion a try. You'll end up with a new library and your old one for further attempts at fixing.

  • IPhoto does not recognise the raw files(.NRW) from my new Nikon camera model P7100,any advice please as running latest version of iPhoto(9.2.1)

Since changing my little everyday camera to a new Nikon Coolpix P7100 iPhoto cannot import any of the raw files(.NRW),says it does not recognise them.
I have updated iPhoto to the latest version(9.2.1) but still cannot open them.
    Any ideas please

The raw from the P7100 is not supported at this time.
The Raw from every model of camera is different. Note: that's every model not every brand. So, the NEF produced by a Nikon D40 is not the same as the NEF produced by a D60, the CR2 produced by a Canon 350 is not the same as the CR2 produced by a Canon 400.
Therefore the Raw for every camera model needs to be added individually. If yours is not supported then let them know you want it:

  • IPhoto will not open my library after I restored from Time Machine

I was successfully able to restore most if not all of my data from Time Machine after I had to get a new hard drive on my iMac. But iPhoto will not open my photo library. A window pops up that says I modified some of my photos using a newer version of iPhoto, so I must open that version. But I do not have a newer version than iPhoto 7.1.5.
I have iPhoto 8.2 on my laptop, but how could I have modified any of the same photos on that? The iMac library is not on the laptop.
I would appreciate any input on how to recover my photo library.

You can get this message if the database file is corrupted.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.

  • Itunes not recognising my library even though I transferred my library from another mac

Hello.  Transferring over to an MBA from a MBP.  I followed the instructions and copied the itunes folder from my MBP (itunes 11.1.1) to an external hard drive after consolidating it.
On my MBA I removed the itunes folder it came with and replaced it with the folder from my external hard drive (itunes 11.0.3). However, iTunes is not recognising any of the music!  I really want to import all my ratings and playlists so am keen for this to work.
I've done it before and it worked just fine.  What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

Oh, yeah, it is confusing. The Purchased option on the Sidebar only shows purchases actually made on the computer you are using at the time you click on the Purchased option. The Purchased option under Quick Links shows you all purchases made under the Apple ID that is signed on.
I wish they would change the name of one or the other so they would be distinctive from one another - even Purchased vs. Purchases would be better than using the exact same word!

  • IPhoto 09 not recognising locations for geo-tagged photos

I've been geotagging my photos in iPhoto for over a year now, using HoudahGeo. This works really well and integrates great with sites such as Flickr that support geo-tagged photos.
When I installed iPhoto 09, it only recognises about 30 photos out of several thousand as geo-tagged. These are mainly photos taken with my iPhone, but also some taken with my Sony camera and geotagged with HoudahGeo.
I've checked a sample of the ones it does not put in a location (all taken with the same Sony camera) and the Exif data is there with the correct latitude and longitude but iPhoto 09 sees these fields as blank when I do a Photos > Shows Extended Photo Info, the latitude and longitude fields are blank.
Anyone any ideas what I am doing wrong / how I get the photos to show on the map in iPhoto 09?

I usually import the photos direct to iPhoto from my camera and then use HoudahGeo to geo-tag the original copies of iPhoto in my library. Prior to iPhoto 9 this is not a big issue as it did not use the geo-tag information directly but with iPhoto 9 it's a big issue for users like me as I'd rather not have to export from the camera to a folder, geo-tag and then import to iPhoto 9 as it's messy to say the least.
As I noted - this will not work - iPhoto is a database and it keeps data about the photo in its database - as all database programs do - and changing the data elsewhere will not update the database
Anytime you apply modifications directly to the data in the iPhoto database you are risking corruption and it is recommended that you not ever modify the contents of the iPhoto library
I use an ATP Photo Finder - http://www.atpinc.com/p2-4a.php?sn=00000414 - which applies the Geocodeing data directly to my photos so when I import them they are complete - it simplifies my work flow a lot
Surely Apple will have thought of users like me who geo-tag using a GPS external to the camera and provided some easy method of re-reading the Exif data in the photos in real time?

  • IPhoto 09 not recognised by some libraries, not others.

I installed iPhoto 09 and, recently, Snow Leopard. Everything worked fine until I changed library using Library manager. Now it works on one of my libraries, but if I change to another (either with manager or using option key) I get the message that the photos must be updated, and when I click that I'm told that the photos can't be read because they have been modified on a newer version of iPhoto and I should quit and open the newer version. Yet that's what I have! (version 8.1)
Since posting this I have managed to get a second library to work by double clicking in the library icon in finder. But when I try the third still it says I need the newer version!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Sounds like the library is damaged or corrupted.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone is unable to import photos because it is not being recognized. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
