IPhoto 08 - Original Folder gone

I am using iPhoto 08 and I have over 10,000 pictures. I wanted to move my pictures to an external drive but when I went to look for the Originals folder there is not one. I have been using Time Machine to back up my pictures and all of my pictures are in my iPhoto Library. How can I restore the Originals Folder? Where are my pictures saving to?

LuAnneJackson
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
You can look inside the Library by right clicking on the icon in the Pictures Folder and choosing Show Package Contents.
To back up your Library simply back up the iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder. You can do incremental back ups with applications such as Chronosync and DejaVu

  • How do I move photos to a new folder without it showing in the original folder

I am trying to rearrange my iPhoto 11 folders. Every time I move a photo to a new album it stays in the original folder. If I delete the photo it is gone from both the folder and the album I created. Is there a way to do this. I am trying to separate pictures taken on my iPhone.

First off since we can only communicate via words using the correct words is critical
Folders in iPhoto do not hold photos - folders hold albums or other folders
    Albums hold photos
    Events hold photos
Alnums and folders are used to organize photos
Alnums are really just pointers to photos in events so any change mad eto a photo in an event, in photo view or in any album it is in is reflected everywhere
If you want to move phots between albums simply drag them
If you want to move photos between events flag them in teh source event and teh select the destination event and add flagged photos to selected event

  • ALL pictures in iPhoto *and* PhotoBooth are gone :(  please help

    Hello,
I have a bit of a dilema here. On 6-27-07 (actually 6-28 cause it was after midnight), my daughter and I were taking pictures in photobooth. I selected the iPhoto icon from the PhotoBooth picture to send a copy of those pictures to iPhoto.
PhotoBooth froze up after doing several of them and wouldn't work. I am trying to remember from memory (which is swiss cheese from the MS), but I think I had to do a hard shut down. When I tried to go to iPhoto, it acted like it was my 1st time using it and it began asking me questions as if I was setting it up for the 1st time. ALL pictures are GONE. Everything in iPhoto and PhotoBooth are GONE I don't know what I did or how (if I can) to fix it.
Can anyone possibly help me? Lots of precious memories gone. I was recently going to read how to do a back-up right before this happened. Now I wish I hadn't gone to sleep that night until I learned how to do it and actually did make a back-up
My husband called Apple and they told him to do something and now that has created approximately 3 copies of random pics and not all of them, or I would just delete the extras. My husband may have done something wrong to have it make extra copies of the pictures it has now, I don't know.
My husband didn't seem like he was happy with the help that he was getting at the time. So, I found my way here again!!! I have been to the discussions boards once before, but I forgot how to get here (serious swiss cheese memory from MS). I have to save ALL websites that I like to my favorites or I should say 'Bookmarks' or I will probably never find it again. <embarassed>
**I will tell you a little about me and the use of my mac....... I have Multiple Sclerosis so my husband purchased the lap top to make it easier for me to get online and not be stuck to one chair which makes me hurt bad. I am new to Mac and have always used a PC.
Anyway, when we purchased it we explained that I would mainly be using it for Internet use and for the pictures that I take (I am disabled, so that is about all I can do but I thoroughly enjoy it), which happens to be more than the average person since I have a new Grandson
Any help that anyone can give me, I would TRULY APPRECIATE!!!!!!
    Thanks,
    New2Him

    Brenda,
    You're quite welcome.
That does sound like your original library. It makes sense to me; your husband was probably told to drag it to the Desktop by the Apple help desk person. Look inside your Pictures folder for the other two iPhoto Library folders. If you don't find them there, do another Finder Search. Click once on a found item in the Search window to see its path at the bottom of that window. That should help you locate those folders.
After you find and rename or delete the other libraries, you will be ready to create a new library. (You might not want to delete those other folders yet - in case some photos are missing from your main library. But if you are sure that nothing in them is original, go ahead and Trash them to free up the space.)
To create a new library, Option-launch iPhoto and click "Create Library." By default it will be located in your Pictures folder and named "iPhoto Library." You can change the name if you want - say, "iPhoto Library New" before you click "Save." A new, empty library will open. Drag the right corner of the window up so that it fills only about half of your screen. Do iPhoto > Preferences > Advanced and make sure that there IS a check in the boxes beside "Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when importing to library" and "Add ColorSync Profile".
On the other half of your screen, open a Finder window. Set it to column view and navigate this path: Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Originals/ 2007/ (Film Roll folders). It is these Film Roll folders that contain your photos. Select all of the Roll folders and drag them as a group over the iPhoto window until the cursor shows you a green plus symbol. Drop them in the main viewing area of the iPhoto window. iPhoto will indicate to you that it is importing. A film roll will be created for each folder that you dragged. [Tip: if you want an Album to represent each film roll, then drag them to the Source Pane (left column) instead of the main viewing window. This will create an Album and a film roll, both with the same name as the imported folder.]
I have read that the film roll date can be wrong after importing, so you may want to check the dates as you go. Open the Info Pane in the lower left corner of the iPhoto window (click the little i). When you select a Roll, its info will display in the Info Pane. You can edit the Roll's title and date, if you wish.
When the 2007 rolls have all been imported, switch to the Originals/ 2006 folder, select the roll folders, and drag to your iPhoto window. Repeat for each year in your Desktop library.
This will recover your Original, unedited photos in the same film rolls as before. What cannot be saved is your Albums, Slideshows, Books, titles, keywords, ratings, and other metadata. These were contained in the database file that was damaged during the iPhoto hang or subsequent hard shut down.
If you had spent significant time editing your photos, then you may want to have a look in Desktop/ iPhoto Library/ Modified to see if you wish to save any of the edited versions. There is no way to reconnect the edits with their Originals; that info was also stored in the database file. But if you want to import them to your library you may. Be aware that this will cause the appearance of duplication, much like you had in the library your husband created. If you can part with your edited versions, then it is much easier to discard them. (If not, be selective.)
I'll look forward to hearing your progress. Regards,
    Shelly

  • My Edits are there, but 'Revert to Original' has gone

    Sorry, yet another iPhoto problem
I've noticed that though all my recent iPhoto edits are still there, the 'Revert to Original' has gone, for all of them. And the sliders - which should be in their post-edit positions - are all at zero or default.
I tested this by duplicating a recent edit, editing it dramatically (full saturation and colour temperature), came out of Edit, and went back in - no clickable Revert, and all sliders back in their default positions. I checked in the menu, and Revert to Original was greyed out.
I then went into Edit mode and flicked back through the Library. Occasionally the Revert to Original button was clickable, but as far as I can remember, those were all edits done ages ago in a previous version of iPhoto (and maybe not all of them?).
I thought iPhoto '11 kept track of editing adjustments, i.e. it was non-destructible editing? I appear to have a version that saves and preserves the edit(s), but overwrites the original.

Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-20276325-17180 0/open.PNG
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-20276325-17180 2/iPhotolibcontents.PNG
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Sorry, I got your email but your reply hasn't appeared in the Discussions (NOW it has! just when I post the reply..), so I've pasted it here (hope you didn't mind).
Anyway, since then, when everything else failed, I did already have a look inside the Package, and there I saw all my Original and Modified versions, so I knew they were still there. It's just a case of why iPhoto isn't offering to Revert to them.
Ok, I have some questions about your latest advice (which is going to be a BIG JOB!!).
When you say Metadata, do you mean I will lose all the camera's EXIF data (that normally shows if you click Info)?
What about Ratings? One of the big exercises I'm currently currently halfway through - 4,500 photos! - is rating them all - will I lose all the ratings?
When you say drag Originals / Masters to the new Library, what about Modified? Remember, I can see all my edits - they are in the Library, it's just that I can't Revert to Original in many cases. If I don't drag the Modifieds over, won't I lose all my edits? (I'd rather lose the Originals!)
When you say drag the subfolders, they are nested several deep, e.g. 2013 > 09 > 20 > 20130920-193215 > (a bunch of picture files). Do I have to recreate the directory structure, or could I just drag 2013 > 09 in one go, with everything inside it? And would I have to create 2013 folder first, then drag all of 09 into that?
Sorry to fire so many questions at you - it's a big undertaking. (I might find in the long run, that if ever I want an Original back, I should just Open the Package and retrieve it manually, so it duplicates rather than Reverts. It's not something I do except once in a blue moon, so I might decide to live with the current situation... )
Anyway, let me know what you think : it's either undertake this major task, or live without being able to Revert To Original from within iPhoto itself.

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

  • Trying to clean up my iMac.  Noticed that while in finder, I click on Applications and in the list I see another folder called applications that is a duplicator of the original folder.  Is this truly a copy that can be deleted?

DO NOT remove either folder. DO NOT mess with any OS X system files either. If you have dupliocates check your files in iPhoto, iTunes and your iMovies libraries. Also check your data files, under ALL circumstances stay away from any OS X systems files or you will probably bork your Mac to the point it will not run.

  • Should I delete my old iPhoto Library Current folder once everything is transferred to Photos Library Current?    Does this mean that all my new photos on any device can come off my Mac and ONLY be in the Photos Library which is in the cloud?

I have 2 questions about the new Photos app for Mac (I'm running 10.10.3 on my MacBook Air 1.8GHz Intel Core i5 mid 2012)):
1.Should I delete my old iPhoto Library Current folder once everything is transferred to Photos Library Current?
    2. Does this mean that all my new photos on any device can come off my Mac and ONLY be in the Photos Library which is in the cloud?  That would free 59GB off my Mac and that would be very good.

1.Should I delete my old iPhoto Library Current folder once everything is transferred to Photos Library Current?
You can, but I would wait, until you have have been working with Photos for some time and are sure, that everything migrated well. There may be hidden flaws in your library and teething problems with Photos. Don't be in a hurry to abandon iPhoto completely. You may need to go back, until bugs have been fixed.  Th Photos Library does not duplicate the photos in your iPhoto Library. the media files are shared and do not need extra space: See:  Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
    2. Does this mean that all my new photos on any device can come off my Mac and ONLY be in the Photos Library which is in the cloud?  That would free 59GB off my Mac and that would be very good.
If you have enough iCloud storage.  But Photos will still need space for local thumbnails on all devices.
See:  Apple - OS X - Photos Preview
Fill your library, not your device.
iCloud Photo Library can help you make the most of the space on your Mac. When you choose “Optimize Mac Storage,” all your full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your Mac as space is needed. You can also optimize storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, so you can access more photos and videos than ever before. You get 5GB of free storage in iCloud — and as your library grows, you have the option to choose a plan for up to 1TB.

  • IPhoto '09 - original and (un)modified files

Hi there, just beginning to use this software and am confused.
I have my original photos on my hard drive. When I import them into iPhoto, I get two additional copies - one in the iPhoto Library Originals folder, and another in the Modified folder, despite the fact I have done nothing to modify them. So, I end up with three copies. Sure, I can delete the original hard drive ones, but then I still have two copies taking up scarce disk space.
Question is, why am I automatically getting an iPhoto Original copy and a Modified copy? Some googling tells me that if a photo has been rotated, this will be the case. But this is also happening for photos originally taken in landscape format. Does it, then, happen for any photo taken on a camera with an autorotate function?
How can I solve this problem so that I have just one (Original) photo in my iPhoto library (original original still available elsewhere, and a modified version only being created if I actually do something to the photo subsequently in iPhoto?
    Thanks so much!

Okay, thanks, Larry. You know before you answered I did go ahead and delete the Modified folder to see what would happen (bearing in mind I have the original originals in two other places). (Sorry for the contrariness.) I deleted it while iPhoto was open, and it was simply instantly recreated, which was a bit of a surprise. Then I closed iPhoto and deleted it, then reopened iPhoto, and no Modified folder was created.
Everything looks good in the iPhoto library - SO FAR, of course - though a right-click does give the options for "Show File" (just points to hard disk root directory) and "Show Original File" (points to iPhoto Originals folder).
I am going to leave it like that and see if anything happens (if it does I'll report back for others to hear). Worst comes to worst, I just delete everything, create a new Library and reimport again. I won't rely on iPhoto as my only source of originals...
    Thanks again.

  • Original Folder Ambiguity

Exactly what does Original Folder mean in File Handling? I have it checked and this is what happens.
I open a file from Folder "Annette" on Drive G>Edit. I make a copy, do final sharpening etc, and save it as Final, from a .psd to .tiff, but now it is directed to Folder "Steens" on Drive E, what PS had open before I opened Annette.
This is driving me nuts, and has been since CS5 was installed. I've gone through reset prefs and still it happens.
Original Folder means what? I see no behavior difference checked or unchecked. The original name of the particular file was the Nikon number, which I changed to "Final.
I need the default to be whatever is the actual folder from which the current file is derived. Changing the name should not consign that Save somewhere else.

You want so much to make a dupe of your document to a psd file in the same folder you document is stored in with the  same name and have a .psd extension.
Paste the following code into a file named DupeDocToPSD.jsx and place it in your Photoshop's Presets\Scripts folder.  You will then see in your Photoshop menu File>Scripts>DupeDocToPSD  you can use this to dupe your document if your document is associated with a file(that is has been saved to disk) and the there is not file in that folder with the name DocumentName.psd.
This script is written in javascript and the actual work is done in the function named code().  That function is simple and should be easy read and understand the rest is boiler plate to make sure the scripts runs in Photoshop that there is an active document in photoshop and ensure you edit envirement is the same as it was before the script was used.

I have an early MacBook 2008 and just recently formatted back to it's original software. It's currently Mac OS C Lion 10.7.5 and it totally deleted my iMovie and iPhoto. I've gone to the app store to try and download it but it's saying I'm not compatible and need update 10.10 or later is required. How can I download these apps if my computer is saying all the software is up to date?

  • Saving/Exporting to original folder

I have spent the last week 'learning' Lightroom using books by Martin Evening and Scott Kelby. I am starting to get it!?
I have "Developed" a jpg image(from now on I will shoot only in RAW) and want to put it in the same folder as the original image as I will be using the folder for a Slide Show. Here is what I think I should do:
    1. Export the file to the original folder with a custom name + seqence #;
    2. Import this file through the Library.
    3. "Move" the file beside the original file.
    4. As soon as I have deterimed that the "developed" file is the one I want then I can Remove the original from the Library or delete it from the disk.
Is the way I should do this or is there a better or more "correct" way.
    Thanks

You're much better off keeping the original in Lightroom. You will retain the very highest quality at no expense of disk space. As soon as you export, you loose quality and a lot of editing ability. Exports in Lightroom are akin to consumables. You do them for a certain purpose like for a client or a website and when you done with them you delete them. You have the high quality in Lightroom anyways.

  • Can't save pictures on original folder position after edit...since I'm upgraded to IOS7 on IPad2.

can't save pictures on original folder position after edit, get save popup to save at different position, also still on toubles to get them back to original folder positon since I'm upgraded to IOS7 on IPad2.

I say the problem is probably noted, and probably will be resolved. Not that i can speak for Apple.  I find the "problems" of wallpaper to be pretty minor compared to the advantages of iOS 7.  The fun of wallpaper has always been pretty insignificant here.

  • Unable to save Photoshop files in original folder: file disappears

    Hi,
At random moments when I'm saving layered Photoshop CS5 files, a message pops up with the following text:
Could not save "\...\FileName..." because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file.
Well the strange thing is that I'm the administrator, the only user of this PC and even when I set/check the properties of the folder containing the files this continues to happen. What is even more disturbing is that I have to save my file as a new file in a new location and when I check the original file, it is no longer in it's original folder.
I save all my files to the local HD and I use an external device to backup my files. I regularly get notices on my backup device telling me that various files were deleted, but will be kept until I need the room. These are files which I did not delete, they are files which I'm still working on.
I'm having to save to the original job folder first, save to the desktop when I get the notice saying I can't save, and then save back into the original folder when I can't save on the desktop anymore because of the same error message. I sometimes get a similar Adobe error message which is basically along the same lines, but I haven't noted the exact text yet.
Recently I closed a file which I had saved and when I needed to return to it, it was nowhere on my computer. I'm very organised about file saving, so it's not a matter of saving files in the wrong place.
I no longer run my back up continuously while I'm working because while it's great to have the peace of mind that I'm regularly backed up, my files can get up to 2GB in size and I think the backup running at the same time is slowing Photoshop processes down, so I most often pause it until I take a break. On this occasion, I had been running it while working (smaller file) and so I was able to retrieve an earlier version from my backup which saved me from having to re-do the job completely. I didn't get this problem when I was using CS5 on Vista, it's been since I've been using Windows7 and my back up drive.
I only recall having had this problem with PSDs, but that could just be because these files can take up to ten hours to complete and there's a higher chance of getting an error message over a longer period of time.
It doesn't happen very often by there has been the very rare occasion where two versions of exactly the same file have been visible in the original job folder (same name on both files). To check if files are where they're supposed to be or if they seem to exhist, I have to close the job folder and re-open it.
I'll disconnect my back up drive while I'm working and see how it goes. It's not ideal, but probably worth a try.
I don't know if there's a connection, but occasionally windows randomly sticks a lock on zipped folders which I create, regardless of the permissions I apply to the upper level folder they sit in.  I'm told by a friend that it won't affect other people accessing these zipped folders from other machines. I don't know if that's the case, I always change the zipped folder's permission to include 'Users' and that makes the lock disappear.
I will run this file disappearance thing by Microsoft, but I thought I'd run it buy you guys first in case you can shed any light on it.
Meanwhile here are my specs. If you have any suggestions on how I can boost my computer's performance for large format print work in Photoshop I'd be happy to know. It's not bad now, but faster is always more pleasant:

A great first chapter Charlie. Can't wait for the rest of the book.
The only time I've had anything like this happen, was in a new build after hooking the drives from the old system, but the permissions really were screwed up, and it was a straight forward fix. Is the machine networked perhaps? The files open in another app? I expect you answered this already somewhere in your forum equivalent of War & Peace. ;-) The lads on the Premiere Pro hardware forum can be disparaging about Dell and HP machines, saying their proprietary hardware and software are inaccessible, so I wonder if it is something along those lines.
I’d definitely unhook the second drive as a starting point, or at least double/treble check its permissions.
The only other thing I can think of is changing the state of ‘Save as to original folder’ in Preferences > file handling, but this is all very tenuous and straw clutching.

I tried to rename a file, it gave me an error message (can't remember the number - 43??) and then the file disappeared from the original folder. When I do a search, the file comes up under the new name, but it does not show a path, and even though preview shows the contents, I can't open the document (Powerpoint) and I can't move the document. I tried "Copy" and paste but it doesn't work. I tried "Share" with Airdrop and iChat, but the file is inaccessible. When i try to rename the file, it says the filename is too long.
When I try to open it, it says the alias is not good, and asks if I want to fix the alias. I'm afraid to do that and lose all access to this document.
Right now, it feels like a ghost document - it is on the computer intact, but it is in an undisclosed location and inaccessible.
    Please help!!

I was able to resolve this by repairing permissions, even though no permissions error was listed specifically for that file.
I could also have recovered it through Time Machine, but I'm interested in knowing how not to have this happen again!
I was afraid of rebooting and possibly losing track even of the ghost.
I did not try EasyFind - I'll keep that in mind next time.
    Thanks for all the comments.
