IPhoto '08 Overview
I recently upgraded to Leopard, then purchased iLife, with iPhoto '08. While installing it, I apparently lost the instruction booklet somehow; it disappeared without a trace.
Anyway, this is my question. I have a folder filled with images of animals, grouped into subfolders, like this...
Documents > Images > Animals > Mammals > Cats
Documents > Images > Animals > Birds > Parrots
I imported the entire folder into iPhoto and created both an Album and Slideshow out of it. But I'm not real sure how it works - or whether it will do what I want.
First, where are the images I see displayed in my Slideshow (or Album) stored? Are they simply displaying the images I originally imported, still in my Documents folder?
Second, will my iPhoto Library and Slideshow automatically update to reflect changes in my images at Documents > Images?
For example, suppose I add some new images to Animals > Birds > Hummingbirds, then add a new folder - Animals > Birds > Sunbirds - and perhaps delete or rename another folder.
Will all these changes be updated in iPhoto. If not, CAN they be?
In summary, I want to create a collection of animal photos, organized by taxonomy, and I'd like to display the entire thing as an Album or Slideshow, PLUS, I'd like it to automatically update.
Is this possible?
Thanks.
David:
Each folder containing image files when imported into iPhoto will be represented by an Event with those photos in it. Event though folders are nested with one another, they will not be nested in iPhoto in either the Photos window or the Events window. The Events are based on the date range of the photos within it.
If your library is a default library, it will copy those photos into the library and place them in a folder within the Originals folder with the same name as the folder that was imported. Once you have imported the photos into iPhoto you can delete that first original folder.
If you add photos to one of the original folder outside of iPhoto that has been imported they will not be added to the library.
To organize your photos in iPhoto according to type or subject you can add keywords to those photos and then create smart albums based on the keyword for that subject. The albums can be nested in virtual folders that you can create in the left hand pane of iPhoto like this.
Smart albums will automatically update when photos are given the keyword or meet the criteria of the smart album, i.e. date, title or partial title, etc.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

I'm getting an error message when I try to open iPhoto - it says, "iPhoto is damaged and cannot be opened. Delete iPhoto and download it again from the App Store." If I delete and reintall, what will happen to my pictures? I cannot open my pictures from the Finder either to save them/back them up.
Hello jwhhunt,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Your iPhoto Library is stored separately from your iPhoto application, therefore reinstalling iPhoto as the error message describes, will not affect your iPhoto Library.

Faces in the overview are not available in iPhoto at all
Hello,
I use iPhoto a lot. After the last update (9,5) the faces function is gone crazy. The thumbnails show several dozen pictures, but when I click on a person it only shows 2 or 3 pictures. Also, whenever I change the name of a person and match it with a contact, it changes the key picture instantly and sometimes erases the person, too. Also there are serveral pictures appearing as blank.
I already used the first aid functions. Made new miniatures and used the repair the database funktion.
Any idea?
Regards
HenningDownload iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
IPhoto show a exclamation mark instead of the picture
Hi all folks,
iPhoto 8.1.2 (iLife '09) show an exclamation mark only, instead of the picture. The thumbnail overview shows the picture and in the edit mode I got the picture too. All the time I open the picture with Preview, I got the picture, but iPhoto can't. In general I have no problems with iPhoto, all pictures are shown.
My question, does someone know where the exclamtion mark (a black exclamation mark in a white circle) came from.
Thanks for any help,
LutzThe ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

How can I get all photos from iPhoto to automatically back up to iCloud from my Mac OSX Version 10.6.8 operating system. Not enough memory to upgrade.
You can't. iCloud is not for general file backup from a Mac. It's for backup up and syncing data between mobile devices and and Macs and The following is from this Apple document: iCloud: Backup and restore overview.
iCloud automatically backs up the most important data on your (mobile) device using iOS 5 or later. Once you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch .....
What is backed up
You get unlimited free storage for:
Purchased music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books
Notes: Backup of purchased music is not available in all countries. Backups of purchased movies and TV shows are U.S. only. Previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
Some previously purchased movies may not be available in iTunes in the Cloud. These movies will indicate that they are not available in iTunes in the Cloud on their product details page in the iTunes Store. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore.
You get 5 GB of free iCloud storage for:
Photos and videos in the Camera Roll
Device settings (for example: Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts)
App data
Home screen and app organization
Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS)
Ringtones
Visual Voicemails
But not from a Mac. If you want to backup your photos and other important files I suggest you get an external hard drive and use it with Time Machine.

IPhoto 5 library won't open - 'unreleased version'
Can anyone help ?
I get a strange message -
'Please quit and upgrade this library by opening it in iPhoto 2 or iPhoto 4.
this library was created with an unreleased version of iPhoto '
which is odd as I have been on iphoto 5 since I can remember - clearly it was not created with an unreleased version of iPhoto as I don't have any unreleased versions of iPhoto !!!!!!! do any even exist !!!
do you think there is a wider issue here ? (I am sure sorry I did that last software security upgrade !! - for ages no probs til the day after ....)
I am having problems with all core Apple apps
- as background for you guys, mail and safari both have had issues since the last software update (safari crashing upon opening, mail duplicating emails and accounts in inbox)
I have the ability to restore to a home folder (i.e. incl Andrew/library) from earlier last week - worth a go ?
System Software Overview:
System Version: Mac OS X 10.4.8 (8L127)
Kernel Version: Darwin 8.8.0
Boot Volume: Powerbook G4 HD
pbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hi andyosira,
So far I have not seen any solution for that error message in these discussions. If you have a recent backup of your iPhoto Library folder then take the old library out of the Pictures folder and put your backup library in there (I suggest you backup the backup before you do this) Launch iPhoto and hopefully everything will be back to normal. If you don't have a backup then...
The only thing I can tell you to do right now is to create a new library and import/add to the library to reimport your images.
these are the steps:
Close iPhoto
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto
In the next window that opens choose to create a new library.
When the new empty library opens go to File/add to library
In the next window navigate to the library on your desktop and choose it.
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
You will have to redo your albums, keywords, etc.
Good luck! -
As i said in my topic My iPhoto isn't working, I open it and a second later its saying hoto quit unexpectedly while using the Flip4Mac WMV Import Plug in. i press ok and try to open it again but than says to repair so i do so, but it doesnt seem to repair its problem. I have tried opening a new photo library through it with the alt/option key but that doesnt seem to work either. i thought it did for a min because it didnt log out but once i pressed open photo stream it seemed to have the same problem. this is what i see

How do I copy my video files from iPhoto to iMovie? The two + hour wait for thumb nails and hour long wait looking for the right videos kills the time I have to edit.
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the Apple mpeg2 plugin :
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
If you are running Lion:
From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it.
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7. -
I'm a relatively new iPhone user. I don't take a ton of photos, but the ones I take are important to me. I've been trying to make sure that photos I take with my phone are backed up and in iPhoto. I have a few questions regarding how it all works.
1) If I take a picture with my iPhone it goes to both my camera roll and my photostream (yes, photostream is on)... is this correct?
2) My photostream is limited to 1000 photos. These photos exist on the cloud aren't necessarily saved to my computer... is this correct?
3) I have automatic downloading set up via iPhoto on my MacBook Pro. When I do this ALL photos I take are downloaded by my computer as long as I've connected it to the internet at some point recently... is this corret? If they are downloaded, are they downloaded from my photostream, or are they downloaded as they come in?
4) If I go over 1000 photos in a month in my photostream, does it save ALL of them to iPhoto or just the 1000 most current? In other words, in iPhoto I see a section labeled, for example, "May 2013 Photostream". If I took 1500 photos during that May timeframe, would they ALL be there or would only the 1000 that constituted my photostream at the time of download be in there?
5) If a photo is show in iPhoto it is permenantly downloaded to my computer's harddrive... is this correct?
6) This is the biggest one. If I have auto downloads set up between my iPhone and iPhoto, is there any reason to download photos manually? Everytime I download photos manually it says I have a bunch of duplicates. They all seem to be duplicated in my photo stream, BUT others are not duplicated and seem to download at the time of the manual operation, which makes me think that they autodownloads aren't downloading everything.
7) Do photos I edit in Snapseed or Instagram get downloaded automatically or do I have to put them somewhere for that to happen?
Sorry for the barrage of questions. This stuff is super confusing if you've never used it before. I just want to be sure I haven't lost anything and don't delete anything.Good questions!
SInce you are having Photo Stream, you may want to backup your iPhone to iCLoud. to be on the safe side, see: iCloud: Backup and restore overview
1) If I take a picture with my iPhone it goes to both my camera roll and my photostream (yes, photostream is on)... is this correct?
Yes, photos you take with the iPhone will be stored in the camera roll, and the camera roll will be automatically added to iCLoud and synced to your devices.
2) My photostream is limited to 1000 photos. These photos exist on the cloud aren't necessarily saved to my computer... is this correct?
My photo stream is limited to max 1000 photos and only the last month of photos.
If you enable automatic import on your mac, these photos will be stored on your mac automatically in monthly events in iPhoto. Or you can import manually, what you are seeing in the My Photo Stream album.
See: iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
3) I have automatic downloading set up via iPhoto on my MacBook Pro. When I do this ALL photos I take are downloaded by my computer as long as I've connected it to the internet at some point recently... is this corret? If they are downloaded, are they downloaded from my photostream, or are they downloaded as they come in?
All photos currently in iCloud will be visible in the Photo Stream, when it is enabled on your mac, and with automatic import they will be added to the monthly events, as soon as the mac syncs with iCloud.
4) If I go over 1000 photos in a month in my photostream, does it save ALL of them to iPhoto or just the 1000 most current?
When you reach 1000 photos in My Photo Stream, the oldest photos will automatically deleted, so you should sync your phone before that happens.
iCloud: Photo Stream limits
In other words, in iPhoto I see a section labeled, for example, "May 2013 Photostream". If I took 1500 photos during that May timeframe, would they ALL be there or would only the 1000 that constituted my photostream at the time of download be in there?
You can sync more than a 1000 photos per month, only make sure, you sync often.
5) If a photo is show in iPhoto it is permenantly downloaded to my computer's harddrive... is this correct?
It is downloaded permanently, as soon as you are seeing it in an event in iPhoto, not if it is only showing in the "My Photo Stream" album.
One good reason to download manually would be the download speed. It is just quicker, and you are not risking transmission errors. Also, you may have more photos in your camera roll than in the photo stream, because you could have deleted photos from the photo stream. The duplicates should be no problem, if you exclude them from importing.
7) Do photos I edit in Snapseed or Instagram get downloaded automatically or do I have to put them somewhere for that to happen?
I do not use these apps, so I cannot be sure, but usually you will have to save edited photos back to the camera roll, to be able to sync them, either with Photo Stream or by manual sync.

How to automatically crop images in Image Capture for import into iPhoto?
On my PowerBook G4 / Mac OS X 10.4.2, I'm using the Image Capture 3.0.3 application to capture images coming from scanning photographs with a CanoScan 8400F.
Can I get the Image Capture application to automatically set the crop frame on the overview? Other applications do that, but with Image Capture it seems that after I do the Overview (preview), I have to manually set the crop frame by clicking and dragging, before I can click the Scan button to do the scan?
P.S. It seems that iPhoto does not handle scanning, and you do have to use a different application to scan photos before importing them into iPhoto.
PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2)If you hide the details pane Image Capture will scan immediately to a specified folder. Other way is to open printers and faxing from the system preferences , select the scanning tab of your printer and click Open scanner. It will start scanning immediately without opening Image Capture. To set other software as default you should open Image Capture, select your printer/scanner and click the scanner buttons. It will then let you chose which program should be launched when you scan a document.

Big physical image size for thumbnails on blog overview page
I have a problem with the physical size of the thumbnails on the blog overview page with iWeb '08 (version 2.0.3):
In my blog overview page- see http://web.mac.com/steinfatt/site/Blog/Blog.html - the thumbnails are displayed with a width of about 182 px, but the images are not resized to this width by iWeb. iWeb only sets the width-attribute in the img-tag to this size, but the images themselves have a width of 630 px. As a result 878 KB of image data is loaded with the blog overview page.
On the single pages of every blog entry iWeb resizes all pictures to the appropriate width of 400 px.
The original images have a width between 621 and 2560 px and are transferred directly from iPhoto to iWeb via the media browser.
Does anybody know about this issue and are there any solutions or work arrounds? To which size should I resize the images? And why does iWeb '08 resize my images to a 400 px width for the blog pages with a single message, but does not so for the blog overview page?
I think, iWeb '08 should also resize the images to the appropriate value on the blog overview page (in my case to a width of 182 px). -
ICloud is not working in iphoto, iCloud is not working in iphoto
Hi,
I am having difficulties with installing iCloud 9.5.1. on my iMac from 2007. I have updated all operating systems, but still iPhoto is not working properly. The main reason why I wanted to upgrade from iPhoto '08 to iPhoto 9.5 is the iCloud feature. So all my pictures taken with my iPhone are synced to my iMac. Here lies the problem, I cannot check the iCloud box in the preferences of the installed iPhoto 9.5.1 Neither can I check the option to use iCloud under the iCloud tab in the iPhoto overview.
I have reinstalled iPhoto several times, cleaned it from the OS via CleanMyMac, but still is not working.
I used to use an WD external harddrive as my library, but not anymore. Maybe there is still a hidden path somewhere in my computer referring to that old location? I have made a new local library on my iMac, but also this did not resolve the problem.
I can import pictures from a local folder, or iPhone to the newly installed iPhoto. Although this takes quite some time, this part of the program seems to work.
Anybody some good advice? I don't know anymore where to find the problem.
Many thanks in advance!I cannot check the iCloud box in the preferences of the installed iPhoto 9.5.1 Neither can I check the option to use iCloud under the iCloud tab in the iPhoto overview.
You do no say how the System Preferences "iCloud" options are set.
Have you clicked the "Options" button besides Photos in the System Preferences iCloud and enabled "My Photo Stream"?
You have upgraded to MacOS X 10.9.3, if you are using iPhoto 9.5.1, right? -
Why is the "overview" button missing from Preview scan?
When I try to scan something with Preview, the "overview" button no longer shows up in the menu. To the left of the scan button there's an empty button, but it doesn't function as the overview button. It functions the same as the scan button.
iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback
Alternative: Click on the top right hand corner of the photo or use the keyboard short cut (command-period)

IPhoto '08 album organization while network sharing
I use iPhoto to store and organize (hopefully) a University's photo archive (which is shared on a network). Would anyone happen to know why my albums do not stay organized (in alphabetical order) when I access a shared iPhoto library remotely?
Also, when I create a new folder and place albums inside of it (for further organization purposes because there are many, many albums) then try to access that folder remotely from another mac, that folder is not 'recognized' as a true folder with albums in it, instead it is treated as one big album.
Another issue is that when i try to export my iPhoto library (under file>export) it won't keep the organization structure (the separate albums). Instead, it places the entire collection of photos into one location, thus losing all those albums and hours of organization.
I'm a bit shocked that Apple hasn't found these issues and fixed them 7 releases later.
Plus, for those people on campus that need access to the University photo archive, they have to find a Mac nearby. Is there any way to share this archive with PCs using iPhoto? Or is there an Adobe product or other other product I should be using that is better designed for these purposes (organization/file structure consistency when network sharing and cross-platform compatible)??
I hope I don't have to switch to a new application, everyone in my department (and other Mac departments) are completely comfortable with iPhoto and it would be a huge learning curve for them to try a new photo database/sharing/storing/editing/organizing/etc. application!
Please help!Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I use iPhoto to store and organize (hopefully) a University's photo archive (which is shared on a network).
This is way, way beyond the intended use of iPhoto which is personal photo organiser.
Also, when I create a new folder and place albums inside of it (for further organization purposes because there are many, many albums) then try to access that folder remotely from another mac, that folder is not 'recognized' as a true folder with albums in it, instead it is treated as one big album.
Only Albums are shared. Not events. not folders. Only Albums.
Another issue is that when i try to export my iPhoto library (under file>export) it won't keep the organization structure (the separate albums). Instead, it places the entire collection of photos into one location, thus losing all those albums and hours of organization.
If you export your Library you get the photos from your Library. If you want to export albums, then export the albums. The same happens with iTunes. Export from the Library you get the lot. Want the organisation, export playlist by playlist.
Is there any way to share this archive with PCs using iPhoto?
No. iPhoto has no cross platform capability.
There are other cross platform apps. Microsoft's Expression (http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/overview.aspx?key=web) is one but there are others. Search on MacUpdate
Bearing in mind the use you have I really don't think that iPhoto is the correct application for your needs. You need a more robust and scalable application - perhaps even a media server.

IPhoto won't display my portrait photos. Help please!
I haven't had this problem until recently.
I import photos into iPhoto from my Nikon D90 via SD Card slot in my macbookpro and I have been having this problem.
All the portrait photos that are imported display a blank black image on the overview and even when i open the file. However, when i click "edit" in iphoto, it then appears. By editing it or just making some kind of change and reverting to original, the file is then corrected and displays correctly. Or else it just remains black and I can't upload them to facebook, flickr etc.
Please help me with this problemThere are several possible causes for the Black Screen issue
1. Permissions in the Library: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair permissions.
2. Minor Database corruption: Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
3. A Damaged Photo: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File (or 'Show Original File' if that's available). Will the file open in Preview? If not then the file is damaged. Time to restore from your back up.
4. A corrupted iPhoto Cache: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto folder from HD/Users/Your Name/Library/ Caches...
5. A corrupted preference file: Trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
If none of these help:
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
