IPhoto '08 Photobook export to Movie

Hey guys,
First time poster, long time mac-user - so go easy on me :-P
I upgraded to iPhoto '08 and loved the new Events features, however, when I tried looking around the photobooks, I noticed that the "PLAY" button to preview your photobook was missing. Savvy iphoto '06 users will know that if you hold down the OPTION button and click play, iphoto exports your photobook as a movie.
This was extremely disappointing as I had grown to love that feature. My question is I guess this :
1) Ideally, this option still works in iPhoto '08 and Apple hid it again somewhere else....
2) Barring that (which is likely), is there any way to have both iPhoto '08 AND iphoto '06 installed on the same computer? Don't worry about the libraries or anything, I'm thinking iPhoto '06 will be a skeleton version and I'll just add the photos in manually if I need to create a new photobook movie.
Here's what I've thought of but haven't tried yet:
A) Putting iPhoto '06 in a new folder and then installing iPhoto '08 hoping it installs fresh instead of upgrading. (Similar to iMovie 06 and 08 - although I know that iMovie 08 is a brand new program whereas iPhoto is an upgrade)
B) Have two installations of Mac OS X running on my computer, one that keeps the old iPhoto and maybe 8 GB's of storage and the other partition running iLife '08 and my main OS.
- Not exactly a pleasant option but I'm hoping A) works!
If anyone could shed light on whether they think this'll work or not that'd be great.

The play button is at the bottom of the page in the left hand corner. It's the same play button you would use on an album.
Yes you can have both versions your Mac. You will have to be careful not to launch iPhoto 7 after using iPhoto 6 on it's library and accidently updating your V6 library.
All you need to do is copy and rename the current iPhoto to iPhoto6.app. Then install iLife 08.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. I started having this problem last week. It affects new and old photos. Maybe one in several hundred photos has this problem. Some of them were fine earlier and have been in iPhoto for years.
This seems to be a rendering problem of some sort. When I click on the thumbnail, a fuzzy low-rez image comes up full size, but instead of resolving to full resolution the screen just goes black.
I imported 30 images yesterday. Jpegs created from RAW files by Nikon Capture. All but one are fine. The actual file in the library seems OK (I tried the suggestion above). I can export the photo and it's fine in mail or other viewers. It's just that Iphoto can't seem to display it at full/high resolution. At first I thought that it might be due to the size (12Mpxl) but the other ones are fine, and some of the old images this happens to are small (2mpxl) and taken as jpgs by an old canon point and shoot.
I'm using Iphoto8 7.1.3(364) and the only thing that's changed on my computer recently is adding the latest 10.4.11 java and security updates.
I tried to duplicate the photo, and the problem also occurs with the duplicate. I can't do the revert trick, since I haven't edited the file in any way since import.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm happy to send the affected photo if it helps.

Can I export a movie other than to iPhoto?

Is there any way to export a movie from the iPhone to the computer other than using iPhoto? Also, what video formats are used in iPhone and iPhoto?

On a Mac, you can import them to your iPhoto library using iPhoto, or directly to your pictures folder using Image Capture.

IPhoto 6 problem with AVI movies

I have about 6000+ pictures and about 500 quicktime (AVI) movies in my iPhoto 6 library.
MAll of the AVI movies that I had imported over the past couple of years show up in my library, but when I double click some of them, Quicktime loads up, and then just opens the generic quicktime window - and does not load the movie clip. If I get info on the movie icon, it says that it is an AVI file, the original size in mb's of the original file, says it is 640x480 resolution, but has little dashes when it comes to camera info. If I use spotlight to find the actual file in my "iPhoto Library" subfolders, I go all the way down to appropriate roll, but can't find the original file. I think I may have found some of them, but they are now listed as ".jpg"'s.
Some of the AVI movies do work, but some do not... I fear that it may be corrupted somehow. Some of the videos were of my mother from two Christmas' ago - she passed away last summer, and they are priceless to me! Help! Any suggestions???

I have SAME EXACT PROBLEM as described in the original post. Some AVI's open, some don't. Can't drag them out of iPhoto, can't export (as Original, when exported as Current they export just a small .JPG). Using NO 3rd party software, the only thing I did was "upgrade" to iLife 08. Have installed all recent software updates. Is this a known bug? Is there a fix coming? The properties for my .AVI's show a large file size (e.g., 100Mb), but haven't figured out how to get them out of iPhoto in order to view/manipulate, or use w/ iMovie.

When I recently did a Skype Interview I recorded it as a movie. I'm not sure why, but the video saved in GarageBand. Now I need to get this video Interview onto YouTube. Could you give me some tips on how to do that? Or if I could export the movie into iMovie or another format than that would work fine too. Thanks for your help,

I figured out one way to do it.
I don't know if it's the easiest.
1. drag the movie from iPhoto into the iTunes movie folder.
2. in iMovie- go to "file- New Event". Name it.
3. go to "file- New Project". Name it.
4. click the iTunes button on right"Show or Hide Music and Sound Effects browser"
5.Scroll down until you see the iTunes icon and expand the triangle if not already expanded to reveal the "Movies" icon. Click on it.
6. Find the movie in the list below and drag it to the new event.
7. edit and/or drag it to the Project window.
Go to "Share- YouTube..." follow the prompts.
It will process the movie and let you post it to YouTube, and give you the option to share it.

Exporting video/movies to burn to DVD

Trying to figure out how to export videos/movies to a compatable DVD. Currently the videos/movies play through Quicktime player that are in my iPhoto library. When I select the videos I want to export the iDVD option along with the Export option goes away. Tried to select burn disc and all it did was burn the first frame of every video and nothing more. Trying to preserve my childrens memories before I attempt to install leopard and risk losing a lot of cherished photos/videos

You're better off by creating a data DVD through the Finder or elsewhere than attempting to use iDVD or similar software to create a video DVD. Locate the video files in the Finder and burn them as you would any other file.

IPhoto incompetant with exporting photos with titiles

Has anyone encountered problems with exporting photos from albums hoping that the chance iphoto will do it with titles will work and only some of them do and or some times it does?

i did do that and it worked fine, something messed up in my user library im sure
First try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and try exporting again.
If that doesn't fix the problem it could be another preference file, not iPhoto's. To check that out do the following:
Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard/Snow Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
4 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button.

5 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

How many times can you "Export - Quicktime movie" the same ProRes 422 file until it starts to lose quality?

Lets say you are done with your project & you want an uncompressed copy of it as your master. If you keep importing it back into Final Cut Pro, & keep exporting (Quicktime movie), will it ever start to lose quality?

I've never seen a number given, but would think it is very high.

I don't think I've ever seen degradation caused by recompression or multiple compassion, but as a workflow if you output a master file, then re-import it to add graphics and export that, you would only be 1 generation down from the master file. If you wanted to make multiple versions, you can always go back to, and re-import, the master file and make the changes, then export, so all you exports stay only 1 generation down from the master file.

You mean while creating a book in iPhoto? Click on the layout button while viewing a page and select the layout that includes both text and photos. Most themes will have those options.

How do I export a Movie to Quicktime? And do I need to?

Hello, how do I export a Movie in iMovie 11 to Quicktime, when the option is not listed?
I have created some short videos with Lavelier Line6 mic, which apparently records your voice in stereo on one track, I am told (although I can't see stereo tracks anywhere within iMovie project, it looks like one track below the picture - but then I wouldn't know what to look for as I'm new to this!).
I need to, I am told, export the final movie to Quicktime, in order to create a mono track rather than stereo. I can't see how to do this, as Quicktime is not an option in my Share menu (facebook etc is there, but not Quicktime).
Could someone advise me whether I need to do this at all? Is a movie soundtrack automatically converted to mono if there is only one track?
(Also, there is a small amount of hiss in the recording, which I have removed with background noise reduction, but could that hiss come from the unused track, does anyone know? And if so, what is the best way to get rid of that track? Of course, it may not be that at all! I don't really want to get into complicated removal of audio tracks into other software and then readding to the picture, if I can avoid it.)

FCP 7 Export Quicktime Movie Suddenly Stopped working

I use FCP7 on Mavericks 10.9.2. Working in Final Cut with raw ProRes 422 footage and wanting to export my sequence as Export Quicktime Movie. Worked fine until one day it just didn't. Final Cut exports a QT file that QT opens and immediately attempts (and fail) to convert. Then I get a message that QT cannot recognize file type, even though file is a .mov.
I send the file to the VLC media player, and it opens the file but only plays the audio. I have no idea why any of this is happening.
Using "Export Using Quicktime Conversion" I can still get the uncompressed ProRes 422 sequence out of Final Cut, but that's a pain. I want Command-E back. Any ideas?

If you love FCP7, you don't move UP to FPX - you move over to a new set of operational activities, a new vocabulary and a new media management structure. Notice the word "new" as in different, not "updated" as in a faster version of the same system.
If you want a 64 bit version of FCP7, look into Premiere Pro CC.

FCP "Export - QuickTime Movie" gamma shift

Above is an example of what happens when I do a direct export in Final Cut Pro, using the Export -> QuickTime Movie function. As you can see, the image is significantly brighter and the colors are a little more washed out (this image isn't particularly colorful, but trust me, it washes them out). I always thought the Export -> QuickTime Movie meant the image would not be compressed--that it was a straight export using the sequence settings.
The image you see above was shot natively in ProRes 422 (HQ) using an Arriflex Alexa. It has never been transcoded. The bottom image is what it looks like using Export -> QuickTime Movie. Totally unacceptable for a piece of professional software, if you ask me.
I can't express how infuriating this is, to have everything looking perfect in FCP and then exporting only to have it look like garbage. I've been able to play with gamma correction a bit and have gotten it PRETTY close to the original look, but this seems like a horrible workaround.
Anyone else know why this is happening? Is there a fix for this?
I'm working with FCP 6.0.6 and QuickTime 10.1.

Here's a source clip with "approximate" gamma correction:
"Approximate" gamma correction makes the image look flatter within Final Cut Pro than it actually is.
Now, the very same clip and frame, but with gamma set to "Accurate" :
Now, things are switched. The exported image looks flatter than the source clip within FCP.
Here's another tidbit of info--the frame from my first post was professionally color graded and exported as a self-contained movie--so there were no filters, FCP or otherwise, being applied there. But the difference is just night-and-day to me.

You need a third party app to do this... AVI is the only format that you can export from FCP that's windows media friendly... WMF's can be exported with flip4mac... http://www.flip4mac.com Probably the best of the apps...
