Iphoto '08 preferences

Trying to stop duplication of photos from my hard disk and each time I try to access preferences, I get nothing (mac thinks for a few seconds and then I end up back at iphoto as if I had not tried to select preferences. Is this a bug?

John:
It's sort of a bug. Open Image Capture, change it's preferences for which application to launch when a camera is connected from iPhoto to none and close IC. Then reopen IC and reset the preferences to what you want.
Now try iPhoto's preferences. Others have reported that messing with IC's prefs fixed iPhoto's.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Have a glitch changing tabs in the preferences window now that I've upgraded to Leopard. When I click on a new category of preference, the window jumps up and down for a second. Anyone else having this problem?

    Andy:
I don't see anything like you're experiencing. Try deleting the iPhoto preference file and empty the iPhoto cache folder in the User/Library/Caches folder. Also run disk utility and repair disk permissions.

  • IPhoto '08 Preferences- opening but not allowing changes and freezing up

My problem with preferences is that it does open up but when I go to change a preference it freezes up and then iPhoto stops responding all together. Can someone please help?
    Thanks!

    Start with the basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • IPhoto & System Preferences freezing.

When I click on my iPhoto to run, the screen appears but says not responding. This has been happening for some time now. What do I do? Also I can't change my screensaver or desktop because system preferences and finder freezes when I click on those options. HELP!

  • Disabling iPhoto/System Preferences integration

I've got a few users IDs on my systemn, and only one
of them has photos imported via iPhoto ... and even
then, I don't want the photos available as a screensaver.
My screensaver is set to 'random', which means that
every once in while I get a screensaver with the
text 'No pictures in this directory'.
I want to remove the iPhoto albums from the Desktop
and Screen Saver preferences panes -- either per
user, or system-wide. So far IU have been able to
remove everything but 'Library' using the iPhotos
preferences, and I can remove Library by deleting
~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library [but it is re-created
    each time iPhoto is run].
I've done a bit of searching around in the BOMs for
iPhoto, the iPhoto user and application dirs, and
the frameworks for ScreenSaver. Doing a grep for
'iPhotoLibrary' brings up a few binary files
which match, but not text files.
Is this path hard-coded into the Screensaver
applicstion, and if so, what the h3ll is wrong with
Apple's programmers? Is there any way short of
uninstalling iPhoto to remove the iPhoto albums
from the ScreenSaver prefs, or to make the random
    screensaver disable them?
    [Update: I did a chmod a-rx ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library
and that is a hack solution: I get an error message
running iPhoto, and have to Force-Quit iPhoto to
exit it. This is supposedly UNIX, we can do better!]

  • HUD options & iPhoto library preference.

    Hey guys/gals,
have these two questions for this forum today.
This was suggested a little while ago to keep it in the 'hud'.
    http://apertureprofessional.com/showthread.php?t=1485--
Is this a fairly safe operation, which won't mess with any other parts of Aperture? I really have no experience with text edit (never been in Terminal either) but the steps outlined on that site seem easy enough to follow. The plan is to turn sharpening off (untick) and just have edge sharpening in the 'hud', that's all.
    Also,
Trying to set this up so my wife can open the Aperture library in iPhoto (she feels more comfortable using this with all other apps). What my actual question is, is it possible to have an expanded view of the pics within? Navigating to iPhoto>file>show aperture library, opens a smallish window which I can drag to increase the size. In 10.4.10 is there any way for my dragged window to be 'remembered' next time I open it or iPhoto? Have already tried to press the Apple key whilst closing both. Obviously this hasen't worked to keep this preference intact.
Should I have started a new thread for each? Let's see if there are any gurus here that can help with both.
    Cheers

that came directly from this forum - thanks Jacob ! - and i use it on all my machines running aperture ... very handy, only monochrome gets broken doing it ...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=674833&tstart=0
it you have ever used any kind of notepad, text editor, or even a word processing program then you have used basic text edit ...
to remove the one sharpen and add edge sharpen you need to insert the key:
    <string>RKProSharpenOperation</string>
    and delete the key:
    <string>RKSharpenOperation</string>
always work with a backup - always ... then replace ...
i cant help with the iphoto part, but yeah two threads is usually a better approach ...

Quit iPhoto and Trash your iPhoto preferences ( "your username" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iphoto.plist) then launch iPhoto - it will recreate a new default preference file

  • IPhoto / System Preference issue

My son is unable to access iPhoto through System Preference the way he used to which was simply clicking on Desktop/Screensaver and iPhoto would be an expandable option where he can access all photos.  For some reason there is no more capability to expand the tree.  He now has to click on the +/- button on the bottom left to trigger a new window where all the directories show up, and he has to find the photo from there.  Is this a bug or did he do something?  He has a Mac Mini.  He has 10.8.5.  I checked both my Air and iMac, both have the expandable iPhoto option just by clicking on Desktop and Screensaver.  Any help would be appreciated.   Thank you.

    He has 10.8.5.
You are asking about the tab to set the Desktop Picture, right? And not the Screensaver tab?
If System Preferences do not see the iPhoto Library, there could either be a problem with the iPhoto Preferences file in the user library, or the iPhoto library needs repairing.
Try first to repair (and if necessary rebuild) the iPhoto library as described here by Old Toad:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22114274#22114274
To force iPhoto to write a new preferences file, open a different, new iPhoto library and then switch back to your current iPhoto library.  To create a new library hold down the alt/opt key while laucnhing iPhoto and select "New Library". Use the same method to switch back.
And it cannot hurt to restart the system, to clear any old caches.

  • Sharing photos by email from iPhoto 11 takes far too long. Easier to specify email via Mail in iPhoto Preferences and forget the fancy presentation in iPhoto.

Though there is an attractive range of photo presentation options in iPhoto email sharing, the time taken to send an image using these is inordinately long: 4-5 minutes for a single image. Added to this is all the confusion created by 'unrecognised username and password' error messages. All in all; though it's a pity given the sophistication of the new options, it is easier and much faster to set the email option to Mail in the iPhoto General Preferences. An unfortunate shot in the foot by Apple I think.

iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback is the route to the Developers.
Also, remember that the Stationery feature in Mail has more templates - and you can download others too.

  • IPhoto Preferences, This is WEIRD!

In iPhoto preferences>advanced>edit photos, you can choose to edit photos in iPhoto (dropdown menu), or (in my case) Photoshop Elements. I cant remember the exact order of events, but I'm pretty sure that, as always I was editing in PSE, but I wanted use iPhoto editing to make a quick change. So I change the option in pref>advanced to iPhoto.
This is the weired bit....When I went back in to revert to edit photos in PSE, the option had gone, and was replaced by the file number of the the photo I was working on!! Cant get rid of it!!
Is this a first? Does anyone have a clue?
Mr. Toad, Mr. Devlin are you there!! Please HELP!!!

In the advanced preferences window under edit photos what exactly happens when you select "in P1010515..."
as I said it should open a selection window so you can select PSE again
iPhoto has the capability to directly interface with any external editor - simply go to the iPhoto preferences (iPhoto menu ==> preferences ==> General and set the Edit photo option to in external editor - select the desired external editor (if you have a previously seleted external editor you must reselect it to the the window to select a new one) and you are set - now when you edit photos they are sent to the selected external editor and when you are finished editing you save (not save as) and the edited photo is returned to iPhoto, the original is maintained in iPhoto  and the iPhoto database is correctly updated.
If you want the option of editing in either iPhoto or the external editor after selecting your external editor simply set the edit in back to main window - now when you right click (control Click) on a photo you will get a menu which allows you to select either.

  • How can I change the "Master Preferences" of iPhoto 6?

Is there a way to change iPhoto 6 from using the following default view setting:
    By Date, Ascending?
I want all of my albums to default to By Rating, Descending, without having to use the menu bar each time to set it up that way.
I have looked in iPhoto's preferences and I can't find a way to change the view.
Thanks for any and all help!

    LL:
Unfortunately the default sort for new albums is By Date Ascending and cannot be changed. I've checked the preference file and there's nothing in there for setting a default sort order.
I tried creating an album with a specific sort order and then duplicating it and the only part of the order that remained was the first criteria, Title. The ascending/decending always reset to ascending.
You might try creating an Automator Workflow to do it.

  • IPhoto stops responding when preferences are changed

I'm having a very strange problem on my wife's Macbook, running OS 10.5.5 with iPhoto 7.1.4. Initially, iPhoto was freezing up (spinning beach ball) as soon as it was opened, and did not function at all. I can fix this problem by deleting the iPhoto plist preferences file, but the same thing happens again as soon as I open the iPhoto preferences window and try to change any preferences. iPhoto then remains broken (same as initial symptoms) until the plist file is deleted again.
I have tried the following potential fixes, none of which have worked:
    1. Delete the iPhoto plist preferences file. This only fixes the problem until I try to change any preferences.
    2. Rebuild the library. This didn't make any difference at all.
    3. Open iPhoto with a new, blank, library. This didn't make any difference at all.
    4. Repair disk permissions. This didn't make any difference at all.
    5. Completely removed iPhoto using AppCleaner then reinstalled and updated to 7.1.4 again. This didn't make any difference at all.
    Any other ideas?

Have you applied the latest iLife Support updater, iLife Support 8.2 ?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
