IPhoto 08 Saturation Slider Flawed!

Hi,
Has anyone else noticed that the Saturation slider in iPhoto '08 makes absolutely no sense? It doesn't behave like a Saturation slider. In both Apple's Preview and Aperture, the Saturation slider works exactly like it should, just like Photoshop. The Saturation slider ONLY adjusts the Saturation. In iPhoto '08 however, as soon as you increase the Saturation above the middle point, your photo starts getting DARKER. This would be kind of acceptable if some of the other Adjustment sliders started moving too, such as the Levels or Exposure sliders. But they don't.
Why have Apple done this? Why make a Saturation slider that ISN'T a Saturation slider? If they'd called it something else, it wouldn't be so bad. But Saturation is Saturation. They obviously know how to make Saturation sliders because they've got it right in both Preview and Aperture, but totally messed it up in iPhoto '08.

While you observation is correct, I believe that this is how the tool is designed to work and, in my opinion, gives much more naturally looking results than the saturation controls in Photoshop.
Try to increase the saturation to the maximum in iPhoto and then do the same in Photoshop. In iPhoto this will result in an image that’s punchier but still retains the original hues to a large degree. In Photoshop however you will end up with totally oversaturated/shifted colour hues that look cartoonish, a very blunt method.
iPhoto’s approach is way smarter, preventing you from distorting the colours and also note, that it preserves whites just as they were before.
If you don’t like the general darkening, simply drag the Levels’ mid-slider to the left to compensate for it.

  • IPhoto's Slide Show allows for only one song !

I love the feature of iPhoto's slide show for a user to accompany a slide show with music from one's iTunes library. However, you can only pick one song. That means that if you have a slide show longer than one songs worth of time (most slide shows will be this way), the song will just keep repeating.
Sure would be nice if there was a way to either play mutiple songs from a user's iTunes playlist. Alternatively, I've heard that the a capability may exist (outside of iTunes) to concatenate multiple songs together to accomplish the same end.
Any suggestions on how to do either of the above?

    Hey Baheno,,
there's so many Roads that lead to Rome!
    Road #1
You can consolidate 2or more songs together in iTunes and name that (2 in 1) big song, Say, "eye of the tiger 2in 1) so this way it will be easy to locate it in the iTunes library while searching through iPhoto. Else you can create a separate albums in iTunes, and you put there only songs that are combined together.
    Road #2
This is the one I prefer. You can export your slide show to QT (Quicktime). it requires some calculation to create a slide show that ends with the end of 1 song. Then you create another QT slide show, that ends with another songs.... etc..... after you merge all the parts together and you have a very long slide show with many songs!
    Transitions:
Keep in mind that exporting to quicktime uses only the desolve transition. Which is fine with me. I have seen so many people doing some power point presentation and slide show with photos and using a array of different transitions..... in the same slide show.....it is disturbing, and takes away from viewing pictures. In cinema, it is said: "the thecniques should remain invisible" so keep the disolve transition... it is the least obtrusive .... your viewers, will never complain that there was no "cube effects"! Only you know about the missing effects!
    Self contained file.
When you export to QT, you now have a file that you can send people through e-mail (given that it is a reasonable size) or you can even post them on web page! like a .mac page.
When you want to view the show, you just click on the file and play it. No need to start iPhoto. No need to have a MAC, it can be seen on a PC too with QT. You can put it on a CD or DVD, and can be viewed on a DVD player.
But when you play your slide show directly from iPhoto, you have to be in front of your mac, you have to have iPhoto open! But you can have you mac connected to a TV in the living room (I do) and then can play the slide show from iPhoto, using a TV-VGA adaptor that will play on your living room TV for a larger crowd to see. It can also be played through the sound system!!!! infinity and beyond!!
If you want more specific on how to export to QT and merge 2,3,4,5 files post back. I will get more into it.
I always export to QT, because this way, in the future, you do not have to mess around again in selecting the photos needed, and selecting the songs in iPhoto. I just click the QT file, and it will always play the same!
    hope this helps!

  • CS4: Black-and-White adjustment layer - no Saturation slider?

Hi. The modal dialogue for Black and White has the "Colorize" option and for that "Hue" and "Saturation" sliders.
But Black and White as an adjustment layer in the adjustments palette does NOT offer the Saturation slider. At least not in my CS4 Extended on Win XP. There is the targeted adjustment tool (TAT), but it changes color, not saturation.
Can that be or am i missing something?
    Thanks!

The interesting thing is that there is an colorization saturation adjustment slider in the imag-adjustment-black and white dialog as shown below.
The lack of that slider in the adjustment panel is a bug in CS4. It was present in CS3.
Adobe should fix that because it is really usefull because it's non-destructive and can be set as a preference.
The cumbersome workaround is to add a hue saturation adjustment layer.

  • IPhoto '08 - Saturation Slider Messed Up

The Saturation adjustment feature in iPhoto '08 seems to be seriously messed up. It's ok if you go left of the default value, removing saturation. But if you increase the saturation to the right, beyond the default value, it darkens the photo! And it darkens it without either the Exposure or Contrast slider moving at all, providing no feedback as to what has really been adjusted. This goes totally against the concept of saturation in Photoshop as well as Apple's Preview.
So, is this a bug? Seems like it to me.

Here's the same test on one of my photos . iPhoto's effect (at max) saturates the colors to a limit, yes darkening the photo a bit, but the colors are true, just richer. The Preview max saturation exaggerates the colors producing a strange photo. Doing the same in Photoshop is like Preview only much more exaggeration.
If you increase the exposure a bit the picture will lighten up with the colors still more saturated than the original.
If you're trying to get that exaggerated look then you might want to try GraphicConverter or one of the other image editors to use as a 3rd party editor with iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto/ATV Slide Show Sync

What do I need to do to have ATV coordinate music and pics as they are on the original iPhoto slideshow?
I created a slideshow with music in iPhoto 08. I synced to my ATV but when it is played, the music does not "fit slideshow to music" the way it does on iPhoto playback. In fact, none of the settings besides the choice of music and pics seems to carry over. I have removed and re-synced the show but pics continue to change much faster, then are repeated until music selection ends.

Although well intended, I fear you've been misinformed.
    Please explain this.
What you must realise is that you are no longer syncing a photo to atv,
you're syncing a movie (slideshow) and as such that has to sync from iTunes.
One can always export a slide show as a movie, that is correct, but it isn't the only option and wasn't what the OP was asking about. One can indeed sync slideshows from iphoto (not itunes) without having to export as a movie.

  • How to insert captions in iPhoto for slides

I've watched the videos and they say you can do it, but I cannot find in the menus. I see a Text Box under the Slide Show screen, but cannot engage it. I also click on the Settings icon and click on the Titles box, but I do not get a text box to insert the text on each slide.
    My iPhoto is Version '11.
    Your assistance is appreciated.

Gentlemen, that is Old Toad and Terry Devlin,
First, Old Toad, apologies for not getting my act together to submit a screen shot properly. Missed a few essential steps to do so. Terry, the screen shot I am including is self-explanatory in response to your instructions.
Here is the URL to access my iPhoto screen.

Question arising at my end, is why my iPhoto screen is not the same as either of yours. That is, I do not have a TEXT BOX icon. This is frustrating me to know end especially with having the latest version of iPhoto [at least I think I have.

  • Iphoto created slide would not work in FCE

I created a slide using Iphoto and saved it as a quicktime movie. When I imported it to Final Cut Express, it can only play the backqround music after I rendered it but not the photos. I thought FCE can accept any quicktime files but why is this not displaying properly?

    Format is DV/NTSC Anamorphic.
The trashing, repair and reboot seems to have fixed the problem. I can now see my video clips in the canvas and viewer. Audio works fine too.
Before this happened, I was also having trouble with a render completing before an error message appeared. I think it said Error message 41. What does that mean? If it happens again, any tips?
I am in the planning stages of upgrading my computer to a MacPro tower. Any suggestions on configuration of that system you'd like to give would be welcome.

  • Iphoto 6 slide show

Yesterday I downloaded 325 photos to iphoto. I looked at them in a slide show. Today I wanted to edit them and they did not show up in my iphoto main library, in the last two rolls album or in the last month's album. I cannot get to them or edit them or keyword them. Where are they? How can I restore them to the main iphoto library?

    noelclay:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Look in your iPhoto Library/Originals folder for a folder that might have them in it. It might be titled Roll XX if you didn't name it upon import. If it's in there check in the Data folder to see if the same folder, but with thumbnails, is in there. If so try rebuilding the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library.

  • IMovie or iPhoto for slide shows?

I use my digital camera to take photos of our trips, and I save them as DVD slide shows, complete with narration and music, so that my wife and I can enjoy them. However, since I upgraded to iLife 9 I have been having a problem. When I import the slide show into iMovie and then import the edited audio, iMovie "remembers" the first edition of the audio, which means that subsequent edited audio shows the wrong time. I know the audio track (always a MP3 in my case) is right - I have checked it several times. In case the good folks on the iMovie forum can't tell me how to fix that problem in iMovie, my question is this - would I be better off using slideshow in iPhoto, then exporting the whole slideshow in a movie format into iMovie, then cleaning up the whole thing and adding chapters, titles, fancy transitions, etc.? This matching audio to the slide length is taking me 2-3 times longer now than it did in iMovie 7 (iLife 8).

You can give this basic remedy a try for the problem with iMovie. Quit iMovie and delete your iMovie preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.imovie.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iMovie; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
If you have iMovie HD6, you could use that to get the results you want. I am not familiar with subsequent versions.
Does the slideshow play the way you want in iPhoto? You could create your slideshow with edited music in iPhoto and then export as a QuickTime movie. This movie can then be imported into iDVD for burning.
    I hope this helps.

    Using Iphoto 6

I'm glad that after 3 days of looking around these forums, I finally found someone with my problem. I did what you suggested and still had the following problems. First, if I try to preview the slide show, It does one transition and returns to the first slide. Second, if I click the play button, my Cinema display powers down(the light goes off), but the music runs anyway. I suspect that the slide show might be running (at least the music is), but I can't see it cause my monitor's off. I just upgraded to OSX 10.4.8 and added the newest ilfe package from the apple store, and installed 6.0.4 and 6.0.5 updates. I don't have a clue how to fix this. Can you help?

  • IPhoto & old slides

    Hi guys,
Hopefully this is the best place for this question; asking Hewitt Packard has been non-productive.
In scanning old slides, (some of them 40yrs +) the scanner won't recognize roughly 1 out of 5. I'm guessing this is due to deterioration of the slide over time. Was just hoping some of you have some experience with scanning old slides and could suggest a workaround for this problem, assuming one exists.
I know this is probably more specific to the scanner than the computer, but if there's a solution, I know I can find it here. Thanks in advance.
    Mark

    Hi (^_^),
Thanks for responding! As impressed as I am with OS X, I hated to go third party. But XAAMP is some pretty good stuff.
The scanner is a right-out-of-the-box 4890; a most impressive unit. Does 16 slides at one time (well, individually in one action). Really like the thing.
    Here's what I'm doing:
In the HP image zone box, choose Applications.
In the drop down, for Source, choose 'Slides from TMA'.
For Destination, choose your app; (FANTASTIC FEATURE!) in this case, iPhoto.
    Click 'New Scan'.
4890 will preview the slides and encircle with a dotted line the ones that "it likes"; it will ignore the ones it doesn't.
When you examine the slides it ignores, they really don't look much different to the eye than the ones that it accepts.
The 'Accept (?)' button will tell you the number that it will scan, (case you don't feel like counting) and you can change out the ones that have been denied, as the screen will indicate their position in the slide template that you have placed in the scanner.
Therein lies the foundation of the question: What does 4890 see that I don't? Knowing nothing about negatives, I don't know what direction to take for a workaround, if there is one. (Naturally, Murphy sticks his nose into the mix and tells 4890 to ignore your most valued slides! lol)
