Iphoto 08 update - PS elements no longer starts

I just updated iLife 06 to 08 this morning on my Macbook running OS 10.4.10. Had previously installed PS Elements 4 a few weeks ago and it was working fine. Since updating iLife to 08, PS Elements won't start. The icon bounces in the dock, then the app closes (stops bouncing) without ever fully starting. I've removed all PS Elements and Bridge files, reinstalled, no fix. Anyone have ideas? Have been using Elements to edit wedding pics in Raw and would really like to have the functionality back. Cheers, M

Mark
Some things to try:
1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
2. Delete the PSE .plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • System Update 3.14 no longer starts after latest Vista (32) updates

I can no longer get System Update to start after the latest set of Microsoft Security updates this week. I receive a message that Visual C++ Runtime has experienced an abnormal termination! I CAN get System update to run IF I update the application properties to run in XP SP2 Compatibility mode! Anyone else experience this?

Well, the problem is solved, and System Update is installed and working.
The root cause of the problem appeared to be that the registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE no longer extended "full control" permission to the Administrators user group on my machine. We fixed this by using regedit:
    Start... Run... regedit....
    select directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE, right-click, Permissions...,
    press Add... button
enter SYSNAME\Administrators in the text area (SYSNAME is a placeholder for my actual machine name)
    OK... OK...
    Quit regedit
We diagnosed the problem with the help of IT support from our employer. The problem was blocking installation of new anti-virus software. We had just removed old anti-virus and "internet security" software. Hmm, I wonder if the old security software removed this permission setting as a parting gift.
Hope this is helpful for others who encounter the same symptoms.

  • MacBook No Longer Starts

This is going to be a long one, so please bear with me.
I have a macbook, an original one (purchased May 2006), and have had many problems (hardware and software). My latest problem started when I put on the OSX.4.10 update. After the update it will no longer start ... it just hangs at the white apple screen (I've left it on for over 20 minutes).
As I've said, I've had many previous problems so I decide to just reimage OSX. I have another mac and connect it via target disk mode, but some directories take a long time to list, and sometimes completely hangs the host computer. Each target disk mode restart allows me to access different folders, so once I finally get my stuff backed up, I stick in the install disk.
The install disk starts fine but when it gets to the point of which destination to install, nothing is listed. So I open disk utility and run verify disk it says "invalid node structure" and "the volume needs to be repaired", but it also presents a modal dialog that says "first aid failed" and "the underlying task reported failure on exit". When I proceed and run repair disk it gives the same error.
So I read around and learn about fsck so I start the terminal, run the fsck as described here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
It doesn't do anything ... as if I just pressed enter at the prompt, it immediately returns. I just restate that at this point am at the main OSX install and using the utilities. The hard disk will not mount at all.
So what is going on? Is my disk dead and it is just a coincidence it happened after the update? What are my options?
And I should mention that I'm a software engineer and although it is certainly possible I missed something obvious, I've been repairing computers for many years.
    Thanks for reading!

If you are logging into this drive as an external hard drive (which you are when you connect it via firewire to another computer) and you cannot pull up things like the directory listing then it is hardware because you are using a working OS on the second computer and just trying to read the bits of data. The data is corrupt and majority of times it is corrupt due to hardware and not software.

  • Plugging in camera no longer starts iPhoto

    Hello,
Recently I found that plugging in my Canon S2 IS no longer starts iPhoto.
I see that in System Profiler, the camera shows up as a USB device, but Image Capture does not show that the camera is plugged in.
    I have tried to:
    - Use a card reader (which used to open iPhoto),
    - Remove Image Capture and iPhoto .plist files,
    - Use a different USB port,
    - Plug in the camera when a different user is logged in,
    - Recharged camera batteries,
    - iPhoto repair (Shift+Option on start)
    - Try a different, new SD card,
    none of which starts iPhoto.
My current workaround is to use a card reader, manually mount the card with Disk Utility, start iPhoto, and manually import files. Not ideal.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
    PowerMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for the suggestion, but the Image Capture setting was always set to open iPhoto (left that bit out of the original description).
As an experiment, I changed the option to open Image Capture, closed Image Capture, then plugged in the camera. Nothing happened. I then changed the option back to use "iPhoto".
Image Capture displays "No Image Capture device connected." even when the camera is pluggeed in.

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • Firmware update and very long start-up

    Hi,
I had a firmware update recently and I think that having MB21.00A5.B07 makes my MacBook start-up very long. It takes lot of time before I can see something more then a grey screen.
Am I the only one to experience long start-ups?
Do you have any idea how to solve the problem?

    Hi Jovik,
not sure if it helps, but worth trying out:
Open System Preferences - Startup Volume and choos your internal OSX Volume as startup.
    Do the needed restart.
    Good Luck

  • IPhoto With Adobe Elements Or CS4

I'm trying to use iPhoto with Adobe Elements (and/or CS4) as my default editor.
I have the files in RAW / NEF format and I click to edit in external editor.
My goal is to save the changes I've made back into iPhoto (overwriting my old version) without saving it as an external file and reimporting it in.
    I read on an IPhoto site this;
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to work.
When I save the file, it saves a JPEG version in the iPhoto directory, but it doesn't show up when I go back to iPhoto.  I'm also wondering why I can't save it back as a NEF file (shouldn't I do that since it's a RAW image to start)?
What's the proper way to work with iPhoto and Photoshop?
I know there are purists that seem to push to use Bridge, but i've grown to like iPhoto's features, tagging, etc.   How can I do this?
    Thanks..

This might be of some help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • Losing Keychains from iPhoto Update

Since the iPhoto update yesterday, when I attempt to click on Mobile Me to upload a gallery, I get prompted to keep my current keychains or update them (nothing new). However, when I click to update them (which I usually do), I lose them ALL and I can no longer access any secure sites, including Mobile Me.
My iMac basically becomes non-functional as far as internet/email/networking/etc. Although, if I re-start my computer, my keychains return but I am once again prompted in iPhoto to update them. If I say no, it will keep asking me.
    Help???

    Andrew:
First quit iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto and try again. If that doesn't jump start your MMe access give the following a try:

After waiting a day for the rolling restore to happen, I called AppleCare because Apple had sent an email saying my service was back, and it wasn't. I still could send and not receive using Mail.
Here is what fixed it. Go to MobileMe (terrible name) in System Preferences, log out. Then enter a garbage name and password and try to log in. This apparently clears the MobileMe preferences. Then enter your real UserName and PassWord. For me this was lights on.
I am left wondering how long ago I could have had email had I known this preference reset scheme.
Although it's for a Mail problem it will let you flush out the MobileMe preferences and enter your user name and password for a fresh start. See if that will help.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Does iPhoto update a gallery from the changes to the album?

When I create a web gallery I first create an album and drag photos into to. I do this in part because I also use my Apple TV to play a slideshow of albums. When I publish a web gallery of an album it uploads it just fine.
But when I add a photo to the album, it doesn't make the change in iPhoto to the gallery or online. Do I have to make the changes in both locations? That seems like extra work. Doesn't iPhoto update the galleries from the albums that created them?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Only photos added to the actual web gallery in iPhoto will be added to the online gallery when updated. The album you use to create the gallery is not connected in any way except as a convenient way to group the photos initially and start the gallery. You don't need an album to create a gallery.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. • IPod Nano Won't update, says playlists no longer exist,

I am really getting frustrated with my iPod nano. First it started off by not updating songs. Then it started to erase songs when i connected it to itunes. So i erased everything hoping that would fix it. But now when I try to put them back on the computer says iPod update complete but there are no songs. It also say that the iPod can't be updated because the playlists no longer exist.
If anyone knows how to fix this problem please respond as soon as possible.
    Thanks

Ok, first try a restore. Next, on the playlist issue...
Did you delete the playlists from iTunes? If so, then the iPod is trying to automatically update, but it can't, since the playlists no longer exist. Try putting your iPod into manually update; you can find that in the iPod Options tab.

  • MacBook pro no longer starts after a month of kernel panics. What to do?

After about a month of kernel panics, my Mac crashed one more time and will no longer start. It sits at a black screen and just beeps, sometimes once, three times or more. I've been waiting for a friend to bring me an osx startup disk so I can fix it from the disk utility, but in the meantime I've been avoiding suspect programs as well as starting the computer holding command + s and typing /sbin/fcsk fy as many people have told me, and each time it said my hard drive was all right. My friend is coming back this week with the disk, but I am afraid it will be impossible even to boot from that. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't have apple care or a warranty so going to the nearest apple store (one hour away) or the nearest servicer (a few minutes away) doesn't seem good. What should I do? I'm also slightly worried because I installed a firmware update not long before the panics started, to get around the region limitations of the DVD drive. I'm hoping this didn't cause any problems, since these panics seem to be related to RAM but the timing is just too convenient. Could this be a factor?

Thanks again BDAqua, and sorry for the long delay between reponses. The computer's been out of sight and out of mind for me the past few weeks, but my wife reminded meabiut it this morning.
So I tried the repair disk function within disk utility on the install disc, and everything seemed to be ok. I got a message in green that says "the volume Jeffs OW Mac appears to be ok." And then "Volume repair complete." I also noticed that the capicity of the drive appeared to be 119.69 GB and the available space 119.61 GB, which I guess meant the drive was completely empty but working.
So I tried once again to restore from my time machine backup, and wonder of all wonders, it worked this time! Two hours of restoration later, I'm writing to you now from the restored computer, and my wife is thrilled (and thinks I'm a genius!). So thank you thank you thank you for taking the time to walk me through the steps! I really appreciate it!
But now we're afraid to try again to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Do you think there's any reason trying again would throw the computer into another state of confusion, flux, and ultimately disaster, or should I just give it a shot? It's a 2009 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM, running OS X 10.5.8. Perhaps it just can't handle the new software?
All the best, and thanks so much again!
    Jeff

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

Try this and see if it resolves the issue.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
    Then try again.
