IPhoto 08 Web Gallery Auto-resize?

I am using iPhoto 08 to create a Web Gallery but have very large photo files. Does iPhoto upload at the original file size or does it automatically scale down to sizes more appropriate for web viewing?
I want to ensure people can download photos from my gallery for printing but my original 12 megapixel photos would normally be overkill for most and I don't want ridiculous upload times.
Must I re-size prior to uploading?

King D:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. iPhoto automatically resizes the photos for the slideshow to 800 x 600 pixels. If you select to have them download the files will resized to a maximum pixel dimension of 3055 x 2033 and receive some jpg compression to bring the size down to a more manageable size.
I had a file that was 4064 x 2704 and 4.5 MB in size reduce to the dimensions above and 560KBs. For some reason the 3055x2033 size is the largest that can be uploaded without being resized down to those dimensions.
Publish one of the files to a gallery and see what size it is reduced to.
Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Reload iPhoto .mac web gallery photos

I have reinstalled iPhoto' 08 because it stopped working. After reinstall it I can update the .mac web gallery, every gallery I add, appears in .mac web gallery after the first 4 galleries wich were uploaded before reinstall iPhoto.
Is it possible to force iPhoto to reload that galleries? I would not like to delete that galleries and upload it again.

I've founded how to solve my problem in another place from this forum.

  • Scheduling of Iphoto and Web Gallery Uploads

    Hi,
Does anyone know if there is an app or built in functionality in iPhoto that allows one to schedule when photos can be uploaded to the MobileMe web gallery? I don't want to do this whilst I'm working on my PC and will rather tell it what to upload and then schedule the upload for later the evening when I don't use my Mac ...
    Any ideas .. ?
    Thank you,
    E

There is not - you can suggest to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
For now just do your gallery changes last thing before you quit for the evening

  • Unable to edit, add or change passwords in iphoto web gallery

Iphoto and Web Gallery were working great but recently, I am unable to add, change, or delete passwords to my web galleries. When I go Settings and into Edit Names and Passwords, I can add or change a password but when I click OK, it will not allow either clicking on OK or hitting return. I have also posted an album to web gallery and it does not appear in the list in Settings or in the Edit Name and Password lists but I can see my gallery out on the web with all photos.
Any help on why this is. I have both a IMAC and a Macbook and it is the same with both computers using my imac account. Both have updated software and the Macbook has Parallels installed. I
ran repair in Keychain Access with no problems. I created another account and this did not help.
    Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
1 - repair disk permissions with Disk Utility.
2 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder..

  • IPhoto '08: Events, (Smart) Albums, Web Gallery & Slideshows ???

I recently upgraded to iPhoto '08 and I am confused.
I must admit I used iPhoto before to look at my pictures but I never bothered with any albums or slideshows or whatever, but now with more and more pictures I need to organize.
So this new iPhoto comes with all sorts of way to organize such as Events, (Smart) Albums, Web Galleries & Slideshows. Quiet frankly I am LOST as to what to use when or for what ???
Okay I can get Web Galleries is for posting on the .mac as a gallery. Why did they do this again if you iWeb that creates photo pages???? Why is this not integrated in iWeb????
Now moving on. What's the difference between Events, (Smart Albums) and Slideshows. They seem to be ways to organize your photos. BUT why have THREE of them? When to use which one?
Any help or comment appreciated as I am confused ....

Events, Smart Albums, Albums and slideshows are different. Here is a short explanation of each:
Events= Every time you import photos from your camera or via drag & drop a new Event is created. This is the basic (automatic) way that iPhoto organizes your photos. Events are date based and can be split or merged based on your preferences. For example, you go to a birthday party and take a few photos, a few days later you go to a picnic and take a few photos. When you import the images, iPhoto will split the pictures into two distinct events. (Check The iPhoto Preferences/Events for some options).
Albums= These are containers that you create to easily group photos in any way you prefer (ex. Combine photos from a couple of holiday parties into one album). You can drag and drop photos in Albums. When you delete a photo in an Album it does not get deleted from the main library. Albums contain links to the photos, not the actual photos. You can manually re-order the photos in an Album. It is always a good idea to create an Album first, edit and re-order your photos there and then create a slideshow, book or web gallery from the Album.
Smart Albums= These are Albums you create that have specific rules, they automatically get updated every time a photo meets the specific set of rules. Smart Albums (SA) can have one or more rules. ex. You have 2 different cameras and you automatically want to see the photos captured by each camera. You create 2 Smart Albums that contain the Rule = Camera Model > is > Nikon D40 (or whatever). Next time you import photos from that camera, the SA will show these photos automatically. (Note: These are links, but if you delete an image, unless you delete it permanently it will re-appear in the SA, as long as it still has the required value of the SA. You can sort by Keyword, Ratings etc using Smart Albums, and you can have multiple sort rules, like Keyword = Birthday and Rating is 5 stars.
Slideshows= iPhoto has 2 types of slideshows available. The first is the "quick" slideshow. You can select any Album or Smart Album click on the Play button, set the transition select the music and you are ready to go. The 2nd type, the Cinematic Slideshow, are albums created specifically as Slideshows. They contain photos you selected and you want to see on your screen in a slideshow presentation. You can set specific transitions between slides, set individual slide times, select music and specify where the Ken Burns effect will start in a slide and where it will end. They are more elaborate than the Quick slideshows.
Web Galleries = are a quick way to share photos with friends, you just select the Photos and click on the Web Gallery button. You set some basic options and publish. Visitors get to see the photos in 3-4 different views including a slideshow, but you can also allow the viewers to add photos to your web gallery. Every time you add a new photo to a web gallery album in iPhoto, it will update the web site when you click the little publish icon next to the name. You can also set tan option to make this happen at specific intervals. (Check the iPhoto Preferences/Web Gallery).
I hope this answered some of your questions. Good luck.

  • IPhoto 7.1 won't post new web gallery

Since I upgraded to iPhoto 7.1, it won't post toany new web galleries. Here's exactly what happens:
After I create the new web gallery in iPhoto it shows the spinning icon next to it as if its succesfully uploading it but it stops in seconds and nothing happens. If I try to click the refresh button next to the gallery it disappears from the list. Help?
I find this to be unacceptable as I payed good money for both .mac and iPhoto.

Wow! I hope Apple is reading this. Just tried to post a new album to my web gallery, which worked perfectly yesterday before the upgrade that I installed this morning, and now the web gallery button no longer works. It seemed to work until I looked at my previously posted gallery. On the web it showed a greater number of photos installed but only the photos from my earlier gallery were there. When I looked back at iPhoto, the web gallery icon at the bottom had disappeared. So I closed and opened iPhoto again, the gallery icon re-appeared. Tried to upload my album again. Stalled. The icon disappeared. BUGGY!!!! How do I remove the upgrade?

  • Loosing Quality in Web Gallery

    Hello,
When I publish photos with the iPhoto to Web Gallery I noticed that the photos lose cuality, it reduces the file size and of course the quality of the picture. Only with the pictures, the videos keep the same size.
What should I do to keep the same quality of the original photo in the web gallery?
    Thanks.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There's really not a lot you can do. Each photo in a web gallery is, as you found out, reduced in dimension and has some jpg compression added, about equivalent to a quality level of 7 of 12 in Photoshop, for faster file transfer and display. You could manually replace each photo in the gallery on the iDisk with a full sized version. But that would be very time consuming as each photo in a gallery has its own folder several different sizes of that same file. The large file does not carry the original file name but is named web.jpg. So you would have to rename each file web.jpg and place it in the correct folder for that web gallery. Lots of room for error.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. • Web gallery thumbnails missing

when I publish a web gallery it seems to work. I can go to the gallery online and view photos.
When I go to another one of my computers to work in iPhoto the gallery shows up, but the thumbnails are showing up as question marks. What's up with that?
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks

I am having the same problem. On my second computer (ibook), when I go to iPhoto, I see the Web Galleries created through the first computer (imac), but I do not see all the thumbnails, only the dotted outlines. I have five galleries. One has all thumbnails, two have some of them (and outlines) and two have only the outlines.
I went to iphoto>Preferences>Web Gallery. Then I clicked the "Check Now" button to the right of Check for Updates (top row). Not sure if this is a program error, user error, or maybe even network error as I'm using my ibook on a different (and perhaps weaker) wireless network.

  • Web Gallery troubles

I published a web gallery (album of pictures) to my .mac account, and it worked properly. But I then had to change one of those pictures (actually a title with an error), and I did this by changing it in the iPhoto 08 web gallery. That, too, worked properly, changing the slide with the error in the published web gallery. However, subsequently, I found that .mac now had 2 copies of that photo album, both with the offending slide corrected, but one with an extra copy of the offending slide.
I don't know how to get rid of the extra copy in .mac. My iPhoto 08 shows only one copy (and the correct one) so there is nothing to change there. And as far as I understand, it is only by changing the album in iPhoto 08 that I can have an effect on what has been published in .mac.
Does anyone have any suggestions> Rick

Addendum: I was fiddling around and found that although the extra copy did not show in iPhoto 08, it did show in iPhoto Preferences/Web Gallery. So I changed the name of the album in iPhoto 08 so that I could tell which was the correct copy, and after the changed name turned up in the preferences list, I stopped publishing on the other one, the extra copy. That eliminated the extra copy!!!...and I found ity gone when I went back to .mac. Hope this helps somebody. Rick

  • Web Gallery pictures after deletion still in Finder

    Hello....
I create a web gallery on MobileMe using iPhoto '08 and had it allow others to upload the pictures to the gallery using web interface.
Now, when someone uploads the pictures they appear in the iPhoto the next time it syncs. However, if I delete the picture from the Web Gallery it disappears from iPhoto BUT the picture can still be found in the Finder under the iPhoto package in Pictures directory. I mean the picture do not get deleted from the iPhoto package in Finder when they are deleted from Web Gallery.
How the picture should be deleted from Web gallery so it gets deleted from the Finder as well? I mean it is difficult to trace the pictures and delete manually in Finder.
One other question I have is if someone uploads the picture and it appears in iPhoto under Web Gallery and I want to move this picture to my library so to keep along with my other pictures how should I do it?
    Thanks.

    Atique:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If you just selected the photo and hit the Delete key the photo will only be deleted from the gallery and not the library. You need to use the CommandOptionDelete key combination to move the photo out of the web gallery and into the iPhoto trash bin. Then empty the trash bin via the iPhoto->Empty Trash menu option. That will delete the photo from your library and your HD.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. • Web Gallery duplicates, can't delete photos.

Hi, I uploaded 4 album to web gallery. Indeed, it looks good. For some unknown reason iPhoto and Web gallery started sync. and duplicating all my photos. I had tried to delete the album or the some pictures from iPhoto, but somehow, it does not sync or delete the album from web gallery.
The interesting thing is that it never showed any duplicate photos on my iPhoto.
I would appreciate any help on this.
    Thanks
    Jose

Are you using the latest iPhoto update - iPhoto 7.1?
given a day has anything changed?
have you gone to gallery preferences and stopped publishing one of the problem galleries and then turned it back on?
Have you forced a resync by clicking on the broadcast icon to the right of the gallery album name in the Left hand sidebar?
If none of that has helped you can go to your iDisk from the finder -- Finder ==> iDisk ==> web ==> sites ==> _gallery and delete the folder(s) for the bad gallery(s) there and start over

  • .mac web gallery

    Hey Guys
I was wondering if this is possible.
I do have a .mac account but i wanna be able to download the whole mac album and be able to bring it to my clients office to show them pictures.
The whole thing is that i dont want to worry about internet connections.
I did try to download gallery but all i download are all the images no html file or php file or anything to run the interface.
ANY KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO DO THIS IF IT IS AT ALL POSSIBLE.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. No, you can't do it with the iPhoto web gallery. But you could create an iWeb photo page with slideshow and publish that to a folder, burn to disk or flash drive, and play it on any computer with a web browser. The Black and the Darkroom themes are somewhat similar to iPhoto's web gallery in appearance.
    Do you Twango?

  • Web gallery access

I have an iWeb composed website in which I have inserted a link to an iPhoto generated web gallery. How can I make that link specific to just the gallery relevant to the website? Currently the "My Gallery" button gives users access to all my galleries of photos. I don't care what they look at. But it is confusing to visitors to my website to see galleries of unrelated photos intended for other people.
    Website:
    www.runningforhumanity.org
The link is on the M. Jayanth Reddy page.
I have made that link specific to the relevant gallery. But the My Gallery button gives everyone access to everything. I want other galleries to be accessible to different groups of people.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer

How can I make that link specific to just the gallery relevant to the website?
You can't. All you can do is password protect each of the galleries if that will work for you. Otherwise, create separate sites with a photo page in iWeb with the photos used in the galleries and publish them. You can give the URL to the different sites to those you want to access the sites.
• Web-Gallery behaving strange: multiple pictures inside!

Just having subscribed to MobileMe, I am trying iPhotos Web-Gallery feature for the first time. But I am experiencing some strange behaviour: When selecting a number of pictures and creating a Web Gallery, the pictures upload perfectly. In the gallery on the Web I see the right number of pictures. Every pic is there just once - as it should be. But in iPhoto's appropriate Web Gallery folder, some of the pictures have miracleously multiplicated, I see two, three or even five identical pics there.
I have no idea why this is happening. It' not happening with all of the Web Gallery albums in iPhoto, just one. I deleted it, created it new from scratch, gave it a different name ... all to no avail. Still I see multiple identical pictures inside iPhoto's web gallery folder.
    Any idea?
    OS X 10.5.4 & iPhoto 08 (7.1.3)

it used to be that this only appeared to occur if you made modifications to a web gallery while it was updating - if you have made changes during an update that may be it
It also is possible that the switch to mini me or mobile me or what ever it is created some new issues - this is the first I've heard with the set up

  • Publish to Web Gallery, makes individual pages and the "gallery" is empty

I am experimenting with Web Gallery because I would like to use this feature to put my high school reunion pictures up.
I've just converted recently to iPhoto '08. I've been working with events and have organized my reunion photos into 3 events (about 150 photos). But I started by just seeing how it is to just put up one or two small jpegs, to see how it works. I uploaded 3 different small events. They have individual urls and when I sign into my dotmac account, it tells me I have 3 pages, but no gallery. How do I get them to show in the gallery? Can I select 3 events at once to publish?
what is the difference between publishing an "event" and publishing an "album"?
    thanks
    Message was edited by: JScott

Yes, I see 3 galleries showing in the web gallery section in the left hand sidebar of iPhoto.
Yes, when I go to iPhoto preferences, Web Gallery section, I see the three galleries. It calls them albums, but I see them.
Yes, in the Finder, when I look at iDisk =>web =>sites =>_gallery, I see 3 folders corresponding to the 3 created urls.
Yes, in iPhoto, if I select one of the galleries and click the URL, I do get to the photos I just published, in Safari.
But.... here's the rub, and the question. If I go log into dotmac in Safari, on the left hand side of the dotmac page, under my account, underneath the links to go to Mail and the Address Book, there is an entry for Web Gallery. Then it lists "My Gallery" followed by the names I gave the 3 galleries I created. If I click on any of the pages I named, I get to them. If I click "My Gallery", it says "This Web Gallery is Empty".
What I was thinking "My Gallery" might be is an overlying web gallery home page onto which I could post multiple galleries. Is that what it is, and how do I get to it?
    Thanks,
    JScott
