IPhoto '08 won't recognize photo DB

Before I updated my macbook to mountain lion I used time machine to back everything up.  I did the OS install, then reinstalled iPhoto '08 and the iPhoto library onto the macbook.  Now iPhoto opens fine, but it says there are no photos.  I can't figure out how to either import the photos, or make iPhoto recognize the database.  It's in my 'photos' folder.  It's about 10GB in size, so I know that's the right DB.
I tried importing it, clicking and dragging it onto the iPhoto window, and repairing.  All to no avail.  Does anyone have any idea as to what's wrong?  Thanks.

It imports photos fine, even w/out creating a new library.  All seems well, except for the fact that it won't recognize that photo library.
When I held the option key down, it asked me if I wanted to create or choose a library.  I selected "choose", it went right to my iPhoto Library that has my pics, I chose "open", then it goes to the iPhoto window and does not open/import my pics.  It only shows the one or two pics that I manually imported a moment ago.

  • ITunes & iPhoto suddenly won't recognize my iPhone 4S

I've made some purchases recently both in and out of iTunes, so I decided I wanted to download them to my phone this morning. I plugged in my iPhone 4S (v7.1.2) and opened iTunes (v11.3), but iTunes wouldn't recognize the phone, even after I rebooted the phone, checked the cable, rebooted and reinstalled iTunes, etc.
My phone is charging, so my MacBook (which is running Mavericks OS 10.9.4) is definitely connecting to it.
But when I tried iPhoto, it won't recognize my phone, either. I rechecked the cable. It seems to be fine. I even tried a new cable. No dice.
What's going on? Anyone else experience this? It's the first time since I first starting using iPhones in 2008 that I've ever had this kind of problem.
    Thanks in advance!

What do you mean OS X won't allow you to uninstall iTunes?
Very rarely is needing to uninstall iTunes on a Mac before reinstalling required as is required with the spagetti code involved with Windoze.

  • IPhoto upgraded Library but now won't recognize photos (they're still there but in "Old" folders)

After I started up iPhoto this week, it gave me the "your library needs to be upgraded" message.  I let it do that, then it said it needed to update thumbnails and I let it do that.  Then it opened my library but there are no photos - I get the standard startup message as if this was my first time opening iPhoto.
My library file still shows a size of almost 300GB, and I can go through the package contents to find my photos, but they won't show up in the application.  After the upgrade, they're now listed in folders named "Old Masters", "Old Thumbnails", etc., and there are replacement folders in their place (named the same but without the "Old" in the title).  These new folders are empty.
It seems like I should just be able to delete "old" from the original folders' names and let them take the place of the new versions, but I don't want to do anything that will cause even more problems!  Any thoughts?
FYI: I'm on a new late 2014 Mac Mini (3 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB memory) running Yosemite 10.10.2.  My iPhoto library is stored on an external hard drive which is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - it's the same drive I've used for a long time.
    Thanks for your help!

This has been affecting some folks for the past while. Having the Library on an external seems to be part of the issue.

The photo sync is one-way: Computer to phone. Photos synced to your phone will have to be extracted from your phone using third-party software, if you want them on your computer, as Apple makes no provision to do so. Since you're using a Mac, you can use this:

  • IPhoto 11 won't print photos as cropped

I have an album of photos that I've cropped to specific sizes to fit a collage frame.  iPhoto will not print the photos as I've cropped them.  It insists on scaling (and often re-cropping) them to fit the paper I'm printing on.  How do I force iPhoto to print them as cropped?
Setting a photo size doesn't work because then iPhoto zooms in on the already cropped photo and re-crops.  It also a pain, because then I'd have to print the photos in batches, being sure that I selected all the photos I cropped to a specific size for each batch.
    Ray

First crop your photo to 3x3:
In the Print window select the paper size (in this example it's 4x6) and a custom print size of 3x3. This is what you'll get, a 3x3 photo on a 4x6 paper size.  You can select any paper size you'd like:
If you select a large paper size you can print multiple 3x3 photos on the same page:

  • Web sites won't recognize photos added to iPhoto since migrating data

So, I'm stymied. I haven't seen a solution or question already asked that is precisely like my problem, so I thought I'd just ask it myself.
A couple months ago, I did something to bork up the permissions in Lion - if I could be more specific I would. The solution as it eventually dawned on me and the actually really helpful guy at the Genius Bar, after trying literally everything possible besides wiping, was to just wipe the HDD and start over. So that's what I did. I used Time Machine to back up everything so that I could just import the data into the new programs, without simply copying everything over including preferences using Migration Assistant. Lo and behold, it fixed all my permissions problems. But now I have a new problem.
Whenever I want to upload photos to a website, such as Flickr (or any other - I've tried many of them), photos added to my iPhoto '09 library after that migration happened do not appear in the Media browser window. Everything before the migration is there, but nothing after. This is not the case for pictures taken in Photo Booth, interestingly enough.
I've verified and repaired disk permissions, I've cleaned out all the iPhoto plist files, both in Library/Caches and Library/App Support. I've opt+cmd started iPhoto and 1) rebuilt all thumbnails, and 2) examined and repaired iPhoto permissions. I've cleared out all the caches on all my browsers. Nothing has worked. I imagine upgrading to iPhoto '11 may help, but I'm not sure. I'm willing to give that a shot if it's the last option.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto '08 won't recognize Canon PowerShot

first use of iPhoto '08 on MacBook Pro. Previous import of photos from old computer went well. iPhoto does not recognize PowerShot SD500 digital camera as a camera. Recognizes it as an iPod. The computer does recognize the camera as a camera, though. Cannot import photos from camera. Cannot find camera via iPhoto to select it and import photos. Link to compatible cameras http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/devices.html is broken. Thoughts? Anyone?

I've not tried upoading from the camera to my MBP but you might try using Image Capture. It will show you the photos on the camera and you can then upload to the desktop and into iPhoto.
As for the broken link, it's probably being updated now that Leopard is being released in 8 days.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto suddenly won't recognize camera

I've been importing from my camera all day because I'm making a claymation short but it has stopped recognizing it for no apparent reason. It's a jvc everio hd camera, it still shows up in the finder but iphoto doesn't say anything. I haven't changed any of my settings, so I don't understand why it stopped working. image capture doesn't recognize it either. could I imported have too many photos? I don't want to start deleting things until I've finished and the piece is safely on a dvd, just in case something goes awry with imovie.
    Thanks

  • IPhoto 2009 won't recognize second iPhone

iPhoto opens automagically for me when I plug in my iPhone via the usb sync cable. I usually transfer photos from my iPhone's cameral roll to a new event in iPhoto 2009. It will also recognize my wife's iPad when we plug it in.
However, I cannot get iPhoto to "see" my wife's iPhone when we plug it in. I would like to clear her phone's camera roll to iPhoto.
Both phones are 3GS with updated firmware. The iPhoto is updated, and is running on a MacBook with updated Snow Leopard. Any helpful ideas?
    Thanks!

I've seen this same advice in several places on the web and thought this might be my problem as well.
However, I'd remembered success in the past and found that by waiting after performing a few computer restarts and iPhone restarts and disconnecting and reconnecting the Mac/iPhone usb cable it "might" connect. I've been successful even with the alien pictures in the iPhones, though it is frustrating and I have to wait. I suggest waiting 10 minutes.
I have over 40,000 photos & movies in iPhoto and almost 2000 in my iPhones.

  • IPhoto 11 won't import photo from iPhone 5 on new MBP

Brand new MacBookPro out of box experience -- picked up the laptop yesterday.  Everything seems to work until I get to iPhoto (as usual).  Plugged in my iPhone 5 and tried to import photos.  Error -- Unreadable Files: 1   IMG_0434.JPG.   Ok...  Not sure what's wrong but when I go back to import photos there are now fewer to import.   Tried again.  Same error.  Even fewer photos to import again.  Tried to find the photo on the iPhone but despite the confusing array of presentation options there is no way to simply find one by file name.  And hence no way to delete the offending photo.  Or to import it.
Similarly there appear to be two movies to be imported but iPhoto reports "Error downloading image.  iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image."  Not helpful.  And again no way to remove the offending files.  No way to find them on the iPhone.  No way to delete them through iPhoto.
Oh, and is there still not any way to turn off the stupid events stuff?  This just causes more confusion for me when trying to enjoy my photos.  Alternatively can I import photos from my iPhone using another app and move them directly to the file system and eliminate iPhoto from my workflow altogether???

Can you access these images and movies with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder) ?

  • IPhoto'09 won't import photos correctly

Settings: All photos and iPhoto library are on an external HD (I use a NAS); importing worked fine (okay much too slow but I axperienced if you don't do things the Apple way it is always like this) since yesterday.
The issue is now. When I import photos from a directory on the external HD, it does so but in the preview mode of iPhoto shows for all images the same thumbnail. If I click on the thumbnail it shows the correct pictures and also I can work with the photos etc. But I can't mark any foto as key photo nor export the pictures to MobileMe (it the only exports one photo as it says there is only one photo within that event). It doesn't matter wich photos I try to import it is always the same.
Furthermore with faces I can try and mark many faces as I want or accept the suggested faces (that are already in the faces database) but it seems not to save them, because when I quit iPhoto and start it again all is back to where it was before....
Any idea other then flushing the whole thing down the toilet and start over again?

Simply, the Library needs to sit on an appropriately formatted disk. iPhoto has no cross platform ability, nor does it claim any.
You can run a Referenced Library where the Original Photos can be stored where you want, and the Library can be on your internal HD, for instance.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.

  • IPhoto "09 Won't Delete Photos

I'm using iPhoto '09 and backing everything to Time Machine and to DVD discs. I'm trying to clear some space on my computer's hard drive by deleting old, backed up, photos.
I moved them to the iPhoto trash and emptied it. But the "ghosts" of past events are still there and the Library still reads at a little over 9GB.
When I say "ghosts" I mean that the events are still there but appear empty until I scroll then the images are visible while scrolling but not at any other time.
I tried dragging them to the trash again and emptying it again but that makes iPhoto unresponsive.
Why are the images still there and how do I delete them?

The images you see are simply cached data.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • IPhoto 09: Won't open photos from thumbnails/won't DL photos from camera

I had a system wipe last night on my MacBook Pro. Apple reinstalled the OS 10.6.3. I transferred my back up from Time Capsule last night. Seemed to go without a hitch. This morning, I opened iPhoto and can see all of my events, but when I click on one, I can't see any of the photos in the editor or in the preview window. Only thumbnails.
Not only that, I can't upload photos from my Nikon Coolpix nor can I upload jpgs from my desktop (used to be able to easily). I get an "unreadable file" message. iPhoto is still preparing faces (15 minutes left). Is that why?
    What shall I do?

I, too, couldn't upload photos directly to iPhotos, even though it opened when I connected my Nikon Coolpix. I had to transfer them from Image Capture. But, either after an upgrade and/or using a different USB port, the camera icon again appears on iPhone and I am back to uploading directly to iPhoto. You might try a different USB port. BTW I didn't have the problem before Snow Leopard but it now seems to be resolved at least for me.

  • IPhoto 08 won't import photos anymore

    Hey,
iPhoto 08 is having touble with my camera, or maybe the card in it. I connect the camera and it brings up iPhoto 08, but the camera doesn't appear in the sidebar and it doesn't load the photos. I can unplug the camera and try again with iPhoto already running, and the camera appears, but it never returns from the spinning "Loading Photos" screen.
It's a Casio Exilim EX-Z600, and it has usually worked fine. The flash card however is new, could that stop iPhoto from recognizing the photos? The camera does still show up on the desktop as a USB drive.
    Thanks,
    Bob

several people seem to have had this happen - a work around is to use image capture to copy the photos to a desktop folder and then drag them to iPhoto to import them

  • Iphoto '08 won't import photo

When transferring around 200 photos stored on my HD to iphoto, one photo (tiff) was in an 'unrecognizable format'. It opens fine in photoshop, but in spite of trying several times, restarting the computer, and converting the photo to a jpg image iphoto refused to accept it. Is this due to file corruption about which I am completely ignorant, or something else? 'Get info'shows exactly the same details for this and for other photos that were transferred without a problem.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Any chance this is a compressed TIFF?
Some TIFF files use proprietary LZW compression, and while most apps handled basic uncompressed TIFFs well, some don't support the compressed variety as there are license fees to pay to use the technology.
If you can load it in Photoshop can you output it to something else like a PNG or BMP and try loading that or if compressed try saving as uncompressed TIFF.
