IPhoto 09 (8.1.2) keeps quitting during large import

Hi.
Have always disliked iPhoto but use it anyway. Now I am disliking it even more.
Is there a maximum number of images iPhoto can add to a library at one time? Is there a maximum number of photos you can have in your iPhoto Library?  Currently there are 5427 photos in my Library. I have a folder on my desktop of 1100 RAW (.nef) images and every time I try to import them, it gets part way through and then just up and quits, no error #, just "There was an error blah blah blah....".  If I copy the 1100 images to an external drive and try to import from that, it quits part way through. In Preferences/Advanced it doesn't matter if "Copy Items to the iPhoto Library" is checked or not, iPhoto quits either way. Last time it imported 500 or so, then quit; when I reopened iPhoto, those 500 showed up as Last Import, but when I navigated back to the folder to try and import the remainder, the usual "Hide images already imported" was not there, and it began to import them all over again......any ideas? Also, iPhoto is the only application open during any of this.
Running a MacBook Pro, 2.53 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 4 gigs of RAM, OS X 10.7.5.
Thanks in advance!

Honesty is a good policy
Currently there are 5427 photos in my Library.
don't have the time to port a few hundred gigs over to Bridge
simply does not compute
We can help but only if you provide accurate and honest information
For exaple I have over 55,000 potos and my iPhoto library is only 317 GB  total including versions and supprot files - even for me my photos only use 241 GB - so youo clearly do not have "a few hundred gigs" in  5427 photos
You stated that you dislike iPhoto - the only possible answer to that is to change programs since no one here can change iPhoto (and even if we could it is very unlikely that anyone would change it to make you happy) - so you have the answer to your "dislike" of iPhoto
and you have the answer to import crashes -
second since you think it is due to too large an import - there is no limit but issues such as image size, memory size, available disk, etc, etc, etc may make large import fail - so very simply do 4 imports of 300 or so photos rather than one of 1100
Time to quit complaining and take action
You have a nice day now!

  • Media encoder keeps quitting during encode

i've tried several different variables on my mac, but i can't seem to output a file on the same H264 settings that i use all the time. For some reason, encoder and premiere keep quitting mid-encode.

Same here since update.... been building for so long now and went to compile.... it wont even export a png image sequence, which is what the source is, from after effects. Its like in the last few days it just got to where it quit in AE, but not untill it quit in Premere, and media encoder.

  • IPhoto unexpectedly quitting during photo import...

it's crazy. I've been using iPhoto or 800 years, I migrate my settings + photos from my 12" Powerbook into my new MacBook Pro with iLife 08... after a few successful import sessions with my Canon Elph (business as usual!) all of a sudden I'm getting "unexpectedly quit" and I can't import. What the heck?
    This happen to anyone?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    start with the basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.

  • Imovie keeps quitting during import of movies from Sony DVD Handycam

  • IWeb keeps quitting during publishing process

I've been using iWeb with my MobileMe account for over 6 months now, there are always some occasional publishing problems, especially since I travelled to Australia where the internet connection doesn't seem to be too fast. But now I've hit a dead end and nothing seems to help any more.
Every time I try to publish my blog it gets stuck on the creating page: "Archive" bar and then quits. This has been going on for days and I have no idea where to even start looking for possible problems with my Archive page... Publishing to a local folder doesn't seem to give any better results either. At first I thought it had something to do with enabling comments, but I've tried either way and the result is still the aggravating "iWeb quit unexpectedly" message.
I have another website built in iWeb that I've only recently started publishing through MobileMe. This one goes through all the 'creating page' process without problems, but it always seems to get stuck on the last 1-5% of publication process, no matter how long i leave the program running. The end result is a "publish error" message, but at least the updates are online...
I've updated iWeb and tried several other things. I really need to publish my blog updates! Please help!

    thanks Roddy & Madison
I have tried several different things such as emptying the cache and deleting the iWeb preferences. I also created a new page and published it to a local folder, it worked perfectly well. Finally I tried publishing my blog to a different folder than I usually do. Same problem persisted: the application froze and quit while the process bar was on 'creating Archive page' (no error message displayed). When I opened the folder that had been created I discovered that Archive files had in fact been created and functioned properly. This means that the files that come next in the publishing process are the ones causing problems: Photos. In fact, I've tried to open the photo album page and every time I click on it the application just quits. Can't even delete the page to get rid of the problematic files...

  • Imovie 08 keeps quitting during editing

While editing imovie, the program occasionally freezes and then quits with message stating that imovie has quitted unexpectedly. I have to relaunch the program to continue working. Any ideas as to the cause and any solutions are appreciated.

    Hi
May be my old list can be of help.
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. *com.apple.iMovie.plist *
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    iMovie updated ?
    QuickTime updated ?
    Mac OS version ?
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

  • IPhone APPs keep quitting during startup

I have several Apps on my iPhone which, after using once, will quit and return to the home screen upon startup. Has anyone else had this problem?
I have already tried removing and reinstalling the App, which will work once and then quit every time after that until I reinstall it.
    Any Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  • Idvd quitting during encoding

I recently upgraded to Leopard and have had problems burning through idvd ever since. Idvd keeps quitting during the processing movie stage. I have tried repairing permissions and deleting the preference file with no success and have ensured I have 25 gb of free space. Any further suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated as I have run out of ideas now and getting very frustrated.

    Questions:
    Did you repair permissions yet?
are all assets for iDvd located on the startup volume (as opposed to an ext HD)?
Are you using an ext. FW / USB Hard Drive on your mac by any chance? If so eject and disconnect it and try again.

  • IDVD Quitting During/After Initial Burning

I'm am having random problems burning projects. I just successfully burned a project that had only 1 menu and 1 QT movie w/o chapters (20 minutes long) but iDVD quit immediately after. A real pain as i need to make multiple copies and now have to wait for asset encoding again.
I also have been having trouble burning other projects that have 2-3 menus, a short QT movie in the menu and a 40 minute QT movie with chapters as the main movie. These projects keep quitting during the burn and nothing is getting on the dvd.
    Any ideas? Thanks.
    10.4.3
    iDVD 4.0.1
    50 GB free space
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Ok, so now i've tried quitting all other programs and rebooting before burning a dvd. iDVD is still quitting after successfully burning a project. I need to burn more than one disk though and don't want to wait for the encoding again.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how to fix this or any other options? Thanks.

Since I don't know what a lot of these crash reports really mean I can only guess. However I see it reporting MyBook on a USB port. FCP wants firewire for external drives.
Try that, repairing permissions and resetting FCP prefs tho I suspect it's the drives on USB. try that first

  • Iphoto keeps quitting unexpectedly

I just bought a brand new imac. Just tried to save some pics from Photobooth and open them on iphoto but iphoto keeps quitting unexpectedly. It keeps asking me if I want to import some photos it has found when I launch it. It then quickly closes. I created another account and iphoto is fine with that account....what's wrong and how can i fix it on my original admin account? thanks

A couple of things to try
1 - quit iPhoto (sounds like that is easy ) delete the iPhoto preferences - hard drive ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iphoto.plist and restart iPhoto
2 - if that does not fix it, quit iPhoto, right click (alt click) on the iPhoto library in your pictures folder (if you have not moved it) and select Show Package Contents - drag the photos to import (not positive of the exact name) to the desktop and start iPhoto - assuming that you are ok now you can try importing the photos from the desktop folder one by one to see which one is the problem

  • My iPhoto keeps quitting on me about 30 seconds after I open it. Anyone know what's going on?

My iPhoto keeps quitting on me about 30 seconds after I open it. Anyone know what's going on?

Kern Portection Failure is usually related to data.   Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

My IPhoto keeps quiting unexpectitly. However, when I log on as another user it works fine. I have updated the software.

If that is the case, then something in your iphoto library is corrupted. Each user login has it's own iphoto library.
