Iphoto 09 and yosemite osx

I'm running maverick and iPhoto 09 (8.1.2 build 4.2.4). I have 2 photo libraries. (45GB and 28GB)
Thinking of upgrading to yosemite osx.
Tried to update the iPhoto to version 9.6 but it says "iPhoto can’t be installed on “Macintosh HD” because OS X version 10.10 or later is required."
Question:
- will my iPhoto version work if i just upgrade maverick to yosemite anyway? if it's not compatible, what do i need to do?
- I might buy a new macbook and configure a fresh setup, probably install an iPhoto build 9.6 while awaiting the new photos app for yosemite next year. If i do this, can i import the photo libraries that i have into the new iPhoto build 9.6 app?

I want to be sure I understand, if I go ahead and successfully install Yosemite, I can THEN go and purchase this 9.6 version of iPhoto if I choose to and it will convert my photos?
Yes.
I am also wondering about this new Photos app that will be out at some point and maybe I should just wait for that to be out before upgrading to Yosemite; I'm in no hurry, maybe then I won't have to pay for any upgrade to iPhoto at all?
I see a question mark but can't find a question there
If I backup & save my entire iPhoto library somewhere will I be able to import it elsewhere later?
Sorry that one is not clear to me. You should have a back up anyway. What do you mean by 'elsewhere'?
Or maybe I should just pick & choose what I want to save & store it all in Flickr or something like that? (I already have tons of these same photos in Dropbox)
Maybe...

  • Iphotos/mavericks and yosemite

This is all very confusing for a person new to OSX. I have a MBP running Mavericks. I have no inclination to update to Yosemite yet. I have iPhoto 9.5.1. I've already been told by TD that I have taken up extra space by having my photos in my photos folder in addition to having imported them into iPhoto.  I don't care at this point. I want to see jpg files not in an iPhoto library. Much of what I need to do with my photos I can do from finder and I like to manage files there. I understand that many of you are long time fans of iPhoto who have talents way beyond my needs. I have been following posts and it seems that my version of  iPhoto which I downloaded from the app store last May after I purchased my MBP is no longer there. The updated version is there but not mine until I update to Yosemite. But all this will go away when the iOS compatible Photos app is released.  Strangely, I did click on the updated version of iPhoto and saw a message that says "the current version of iPhoto requires 10.10 but you can download the last compatable version" and the download button was blinking blue. Am I wrong in believing that my older version of iPhoto can still be downloaded because I am running Mavericks? Will that all go away when Photos is released even though I'm still running Mavericks or will Photos be available to users of Mavericks?

    Your question is not clear
iPhoto is not currently available to Mavericks Or any other older OS unless you have previously downloaded it and can download it from your purchases
If you have not then your only choice it Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6  --  soon your only choice will be OS X 10.10.3 and Photos I suspect unless you currently have older software - if you do have older software you can continue to use it but will not be able to update unless you go the the current versions
What exactly are you trying to find out?

  • IPhoto, Upgrades, and Yosemite

I have iPhoto  9.5.1 .  I can upgrade it through the App Store, assuming the upgrade is iPhoto and NOT Photo for Yosemite (I don't have Yosemite - was concerned about the issues I read about).  BUT I have additional  iPhoto libraries on two external hard drives - how do I upgrade these?  I was going to put the entire set of libraries on one drive.  Should I do that and THEN upgrade the iPhoto? I have loaded the photos onto cloud servers as well (I don't want to lose them) so have back ups covered.
    Any advice for me?

You upgrade any and every library the same way: by opening it.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
As for what you read about Yosemite: go back and read what they said about whatever version of the OS you are running... Remarkably similar you'll find.

Did you go to your Applications/Utilities folder and actually double click on the updater to run it?

  • I have iphoto 7. I need to order additional copies of a wedding album. When I try, it tells me that I can no longer order on iphoto 7 and I need to upgrade. When I try to upgrade, it tells me tat I can't upgrade because I have OSX 10.6.8  What can I do

I have iphoto7. I need to order additional copies of a wedding album I creared LESS THAT A YEAR AGO!!!. Apperently I can no longer order on iphoto 7 and cannot download the upgrade on my OSX 10.6.8 system What can I do?

Your profile signature is confusing. There it says "iPhoto '08, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)".  But your question mentions older systems:  " iphoto 7 and cannot download the upgrade on my OSX 10.6.8 system"
Do you have two different Macs? If you have a second mac with OS X Mountain Lion (10.8), you could upgrade that to MAvericks and buy the most recent iPhoto '11, version 9.5.1 from the App Store. That would be the least expensive solution to upgrade your iPhoto.
If you only have iPhoto 7 on OSX 10.6.8, you can can buy the boxed iLife '11 installer package from Amazon. This will install an early version of iPhoto '11, that runs well with your current system and will let you print your book.  You will need to run the iPhoto library upgrader to convert your old library, see:  iPhoto '11: About the Library Upgrader
Also, you  should be aware, that upgrading your library may change the book layout a bit, because the themes have changed between the versions, so you need to keep a backup copy of the library and iPhoto 7, to be able to compare the upgraded version to the original.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what's going wrong?

I have the exact same problem, also running OS X Machericks 10.9.5 on a Mac Book Pro, would be really helpful to understand how to fix this error.

  • There's a glitch somewhere. iphoto just wont open. upgraded to yosemite and downloaded iPhoto upgrader and it doesn't work, just keeps telling me to upgrade when I did already or quit, so no way to do photos on this brand new mac. that's a pity!!

You need to have iPhoto 11 v9.6 (which you can get from the App Store) to use iPhoto on Yosemite. If you already have iPhoto 11 then the update is free. Otherwise it's a purchase.

  • There are too many questions "like" mine, so here it is: I updated from Mountain Lion to Yosemite, I can't open iphoto 9.1.5, I am directed to the app store, I "accept" iphoto upgrade and enter my credentials, but no update occurs. :-(

Attempting iPhoto upgrade from 9.1.5 to 9.5.

How many questions like yours should there be? What exactly do you expect the volenteers here to do about what you personally consider "too many questions"?
To move to iphoto 9.6 (required for Yosemite) You must log in to the App store  using the Apple ID that was used to set up the compter (or purchase the application if it was purchased later), backup your iPhoto library and then download and install iPhoto 9.6 from the App store
If that is not working then you must contact App store suport - link is on the right of the App store window

I say 'may improve', based on my experience of when I upgraded to 10.5 a few years ago.  It took a while to learn what I kept insisting was not junk. It is a slow learner but it got there.
P.S. When you are satisfied it is identifying junk reasonably accurately, you can change the Preferences setting back to  'Move it to the Junk mail box'

  • How do I restore text erased from a .txt document, named and saved frequently, and on Yosemite OSX?

How do I restore text erased from a .txt document, named and saved frequently, and on Yosemite OSX?

    1. I have no reason to doubt it, the task is pretty simple.
    2. You should realise that these are not rewrites but progressions. PDF 1.7 adds just a little to PDF 1.6, and so on. Early versions of Acrobat would always update the version number to the latest version, whether or not they needed to do so. More recent versions have got smarter. Sounds as if XI is smarter still and is writing the version number actally needed rather than just the highest number it knows. People have strange ideas about PDF version numbers and sometimes want to do things like "open and save in the latest version" but this is not just useless but meaningless.
    3. In many cases the first line of the PDF contains the version number (but not the extension number), but this need not be accurate as a later piece of information (much later and harder to find) can override it.

Since upgrading to Yosemite my iPhoto, iMovie and Garage band has simply disappeared from my Mac. HELP!?

    Hi Jdireen,
As someone who uses the iLife applications on a daily basis on my Mac I can understand how it would be upsetting to have them disappear suddenly. Let's see if we can get you back up and running.
You can download the applications again and reinstall them from the Mac App Store -
    GarageBand - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garageband/id682658836?mt=12
    iMovie - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imovie/id408981434?mt=12

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Cannot open iPhoto after downloading yosemite

After downloading Yosemite, I could not open iPhoto.
    OSX Yosemite 10.10
    1. Click on iPhoto icon
    2. pop-up opens stating "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared". I click "Learn more".
    3. Library Upgrader opens and I click on Download.
    4. I double click on the box icon in the new window.
    5.  "This tool prepares libraries from iPhoto 7 or earlier so they can be upgraded with the current version of iPhoto" opens in a new box. I click "continue"  and agree with the agreement.
    6. Click "install" in a new window and "install" again.
    7. "The installation was completed successfully" appears.
    8. I click on iPhoto icon and the process starts from the beginning.
I have tried this app. four times.

Locate your iPhoto library and then use the iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library - Apple Support link for instructions and then test.
If you still have troubles reset both the SMC and PRAM 2-3 times back to back. You can find instructions for this by clicking iMac SMC and PRAM reset
Post back with the results after rebuilding your library and doing the resets if you need to.

  • How can I subscribe to a Shared Photo Stream from iPhoto 9.4 on OSX 10.7.5 ?

I just updated to iPhoto 9.4 on both my (just updated) OSX 10.8.2 MacBook Pro and my OSX 10.7.5 Mac mini.
For some mysterious reason Apple specifies that I can not subscribe to the new "Shared Photo Streams" from my OSX 10.7.5 Mac mini.
    How could that be ?
How can I get around this ?
How can it be that Apple claims that 'Shared Photo Streams' can be shared to all my other devices, but it turns out that my major photo-database can't, even though it has a brand new version of last year's OSX running... ???!!!
This can't be a software issue...
because if that were the case Apple would be deliberately cutting off users of last year's operating system... (...I even think there is a law prohibiting that...)
so... can anyone tell me what the exact piece of hardware is that I am missing ?
or has anyone found a solution for this yet ?
    Thanks !

The only hardware that's preventing me from upgrading to 10.8 "Mountain Lion" would be the fact that a Mid-2007 Mac mini doesn't have a separate graphics card...
...as all other hardware-components ar similar to the iMac Mid 2007... :
    - at least 2GB of PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM
    - a 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo "Merom" processor
    - a WiFi-N compatible AirPort-card (I've upgraded the one in my Mac mini to an Atheros AR-9280...)
    - OSX 10.6.8 or later installed (I have OSX 10.7.5)
    - iPhoto 9.4
...so the only spec I not meeting hardware-wise is the fact that my Mac mini has a GMA950 shared graphics card...
but surely... that can not be the reason I can't subscribe to a Photo Stream...
why would that have anything to do with eachother ???!!!
[ I've even seen claims of tricked OSX 10.8 installers for the Mid-2007 Mac mini, so if that's my only option... ]

I know many have this issue but i can't find a solution to the problem. i get message saying insuffisiant disk space in the volume iPhoto library and i have plenty of space available. i have the new macbook pro with retina display. i have never seen this message before and i have 2 other macbooks and have had many other also. i am assuming this is a problem with the new macbook retina. does anyone know the exact fix to this issue? i have seen many sugestions to try to fix this issue but none have solved the issue for anyone that i can find in the Apple Support Community. thank for looking into this in advance.
    ******A true apple fan********

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.
