IPhoto '09 book themes

Hey everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that I've updated my web site of iPhoto book theme descriptions to reflect the changes in iPhoto '09: http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes
There you can find descriptions and examples for every single layout in every single iPhoto book theme. Most of the new stuff is about maps and the Travel theme, though there are minor changes in every theme.
You can still find information about iPhoto '08 themes as well.
Hope you find it useful!
best,
Liz

Thank you so much for all of your work - your site makes planning a book (and sometimes trouble shooting one) so much easier
Now on to calendars
One minor comment (so far) there is no iPhoto '07 - it went from iPhoto 6 to iPhoto '08 (version 7.x.x) to iPhoto '09 (version 8.x.x) just to see how carefully people pay attention

  • Iphoto 11 book theme summary?

    Hiya,
I am new to iphoto and I am trying to decide which book theme to use and as much as the preview screen is handy to pick the look and feel, I would like a summary table of all the themes to help with my selection. The key information not available on the preview screen is the maximum number of photos per page and whether text can be added to each photo. These features vary depending on the size and the theme selected.
I have searched on the internet and can not seem to find a nice summary for iphoto 11. I did find Liz Castro's iphotobookthemes.com website but this is for v9 not v11 and again does not summarise which features are available for which theme on one page.
Does anyone have a summary of the iphoto 11 book themes?
    Thanks so much
    AC

Not that I've seen - Liz Castro's are still valid - '11 has more options but has (I believe) everything '09 had

  • IPhoto 08 book themes - How many?

How many book themes are there in IPhoto 08? How can I see what they actually look like?

I haven't done prints through Apple, and I'm not sure it's the same company. I did three books last year, was very happy with the results, and they have impressed everyone I show them to. Lots of posters here are similarly happy--try a search for some reports. The pages are not quite as thick and shiny as a coffee-table book you'd get in the bookstore, but they are very nice.
Also, I suspect that if you get it, hate the quality, and write a screed to Apple, they will refund your money without a big hassle. I know FedEx said they had delivered something I never received last xmas--Apple just credited my card back a day or so after my report.
People here do say that trying to do too much processing the color of the photos and refining them can actually lead to worse results with the books, however.

  • IPhoto 11 book themes...

    Quick Q People.
When I purchase iPhoto 11 can I gain access to the the new book & slideshow templates that come with iPhoto via aperture?
    Cheers

Aperture can share its previews with iPhoto. When in iPhoto you can see the Aperture library,*File->Show Aperture Library* You can see all your projects, albums, smart albums etc. You can drag from Aperture into iPhoto but remember you're dragging the Aperture preview so keep that in mind when you setting the Aperture preview settings.
Once you have the images in iPhoto you of course can then use all iPhoto's bits on those images.

  • How can I create or customize an iPhoto book theme?

I am looking for a way to make a new book theme in iPhoto, so a group of photographers can create portfolios with a consistent style. I have had complete success doing this with Aperture, but not everyone has Aperture!
So far, for iPhoto, I have done the following:
    1. Copied one of the existing themes in /Library/Application Support/iPhoto/Themes;
    2. Renamed all the files, and references to files to my new theme name;
    3. Copied the necessary files in the /Library/Application Support/iPhoto/Themes/Shared folder.
This works, in as much as I see the new theme in the choices in iPhoto. However, the pages are blank, and not editable. The only way to make them editable again is to change the "CFBundleIdentifier" back to an existing theme, eg "com.apple.framework.iPhoto.Contemporary-Hardcover"
I have scoured the system, and I can not see any frameworks folders or files identified by iPhoto themes. Is "com.apple.framework.iPhoto.Contemporary-Hardcover" a call to a compiled function in the program itself? In other words, is this something only Apple can alter, or does anyone have any new leads for me to follow?

This is not an exact match of what you point to as an example, but you might conisder it...

Play with the various adjustments and see if it is something you can use.

  • IPhoto Book Themes - Printed Guides

    Hi,
Many of you are familiar with my rather obsessive site documenting all the different layouts that you can create with each iPhoto book theme: http://www.lizcastro.com/iphotobookthemes
I've long thought it would be handy to have a printable version, concisely laid out, to serve as a reference guide, right on my desk, while I'm creating a book. The result is 16 individual e-books (in PDF format) that exhaustively, concisely, and beautifully show you every possible layout in each of iPhoto's themes, all updated to reflect iPhoto '09 version 8.11.
Which theme allows captions? Which lets you put 8 photos on a single page? How do you get one large vertical next to two smaller horizontals? It's all laid out in these new ebooks.
I am giving away the Modern Lines theme guide for free for a limited time. The only thing I ask in exchange is feedback on how useful you think it is and if this is something you can imagine buying in the future (though of course, there's no obligation).
I will continue to update the Web site as well.
If you're interested in seeing the sample, just drop me a line. (http://www.elizabethcastro.com/html/contact.html)
    kind regards,
    Liz

  • Using iPhoto Book Themes in Aperture

I would like to use the iPhoto book themes in Aperture.
    Anyway of importing them.
    Thanks, Paul.
iMac Intel Core Duo 20", 2 GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Nikon Coolscan V ED, Nikon D200, Iomega MiniMax

In iPhoto-08 I have 13 book themes and in Aperture 2.0.1 I have 8 beautiful themes, fully customizable that is. I am also able to make my own Custom Themes.
The new themes is Formal and Modern Lines.
You can find more info on this at:
    www.apple.com/aperture/features/100.html
I think that the reason for more themes in iPhoto is that iPhoto is aimed at the consumer market and Aperture for the professional market. If I really would like to make a book with the Crayon- or the Water Color theme (would I ever?) I certainly would update preview for those images and then make the book in iPhoto.
IMHO the book options has become more flexible in v2 although there are some issues yet and some features I really would like to see in an upcoming upgrade.
    Regards
    Paulk

  • Editing book themes in iPhoto '08

Is there a way to modify the template for a book theme in iPhoto '08?
I'd like to use the Folio theme to create a printable book, but the default text boxes don't meet my needs (I'd like to collapse the three tiny text fields into a single one with a larger font size).
I'd be willing to edit a Library file if that's what is needed.

    herve-french,
I have played around with the book themes a little and here's what I have found out so far.
The iPhoto Book Theme support files are located here:
Library > Application Support > iPhoto > Themes.
Each theme for books, calendars, postcards, etc has a folder.
The theme name (what is displayed in iPhoto) is in this file:
    Theme-folder > Contents > Resources > language.lproj > Localizable.strings
Theme-folder is the folder name of the theme.
language is English, French, da, etc.
This file opens in Xcode by default, but can be edited by TextEdit.
The theme name is the sixth line of this file. Look for "ThemeName".
To test this discovery I removed a few folders and created a new one:
    1) I removed the folders of themes I probably will never use, e.g. baby Boy, Crayon, etc.
    2) I copied the folder PictureBook-Hardcover.IPBookTheme and renamed it PictureBookFrancis-Hardcover.IPBookTheme. I then edited PictureBookFrancis-Hardcover.IPBookTheme > Contents > Resources > English.lproj > Localizable.strings, renaming the theme from "Picture Book" to "Picture Book Francis".
Before testing the updated themes, I deleted the theme cache in the iPhoto Library:
Select iPhoto Libary, Control-Click and choose "Show Package Contents". The file to delete is "ThemeCache". I also deleted the folder "Caches",but I don't think that's necessary.
Launch iPhoto, choose to create a new Book, the Theme pop-up window should now exclude the themes that were deleted and it should include the new Theme.
So now I know how to create a new theme based on an existing one. The next step is to figure out how to change the layout and the sizes of photo boxes on the pages. I expect that deleting the ThemeCache file after all changes should load up the updated information.
Needless to say, files and folders should be backed-up.
    Regards,
    Francis.

  • Miss a map function in Aperture 2 book themes as available iPhoto

is there a way to import the iPhoto book theme lay-outs with map function into aperture 2 (map with travel route based on photo gps data and manual input)?
    any ideas?
    many thanks

Welcome to the Apple user to user assistance forums
No - iPhoto and Aperture are totally different and you can not share the templates
You can do a map page in iPhoto and print that page to PDF selecting the send PDF to iPhoto option which will create an image of the map in iPhoto - then export that image and import it to Aperture (or upload to MobileMe or use any places that images can be user)

  • IPhoto book themes

I had a hard drive crash and am in the process of restoring a new hard drive with the recovered data. iPhoto seems to work fine except I lost all of the iPhoto Book Themes. I re-installed iPhoto on the new drive, and, as I said, it seems to be working. But, I cannot find the themes. Where can I go to download the themes for this. I am using iPhoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424).

  • How do you add pictures instead of video into the comic book theme?

I'm doing a project for school and I have to use the comic book theme in iMovie. In the box above the text where you would usually add a movie or video, I want to put photos. How do I do that? Thanks

Does it allow you to drag a photo into that window? Try it with a picture out of iPhoto maybe and see if it will allow you to drop it into the placeholder area.

  • Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks

  • IPhoto Picture Book larger than 28 x22cm - how do I specify?

A few years ago, I made an iPhoto book using the Picture Book theme that was larger than 28x22cm. Now, when I try to order a book, I am only able to choose within the Picture Book theme from the hard, soft and wire bound options, and I don't have any ability to change the size of the book. I'm ordering from NZ.
Does anyone know whether there is any way to buy a larger book using Picture Book? Does another theme give you that option?
    Thanks so much!

  • The photos printed in my iphoto '11 book have come out fuzzy?

The photos printed in my iphoto '11 book have come out fuzzy. they were fine the first time i had them printed, why have they come out fuzzy second time?
I printed a book for a relative a couple of years ago to celebrate his 21st. then this year his younger brother also turned 21, I printed a new photo memory book and used some of the photos in his older brothers book in this new one. Those photos that were used in both books came out fuzzy in the second one when they were fine in the first one. Why could this be and can it be rectified?

Did you use different versions of the photos or different sizes? Have you now used a different iPhoto version? The book templates changed between the versions.
Compare the printed book to the PDF preview of your book. The printed book should look exactly as the preview, see:   iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture
If you want to return the book for a refund, use the "Report a problem" link on your email receipt.

  • Picture Book theme - why has my book printed with text box outlines showing? and how do I change this for any future purchases? This did not occur with previous books.

Why have borders appeared around the text boxes in the Picture Book theme and how do I change them for the future.  My latest book looks dreadful!

Have you checked, if your book is really set to the "Photos" Theme? This looks like you may have used one of the "Travel" themes. These themes create borders around the text boxes. When you select a theme, the book title will say "Photos", even if the theme is a different one.
For example, frames text boxes with the "travel" theme.
Have you previewed your book, before printing it? Did the framed boxes already show in the preview?
See: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture
