IPhoto '09 buggy?

From my perspective this is the most buggy release of this software to date.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on the main problem I need to get resolved. In prior versions of iPhoto I've been able to burn a CD or DVD to transfer photos to another computer. Doing it this way retained all the pertinent info relating to the photos including the original versions of images, albums, etc. Now when I try this there are a variety of problems on importing:
1. Albums do not import (the photos and events do, but not albums I've put them in).
2. The original versions do not import (I can't revert to original)
3. Movie files do not import (only a JPEG image of the first frame does).
4. Movie files come in with bogus date and time stamps.
5. A few images will not open properly after import (they are black). I can "fix" this by opening them in Photoshop and re-saving them.
1 & 2 are the killers (especially #2). I can work around the rest. Here is what I know so far. I believe the info is on the burned discs, but it's just not getting imported. When I compare the size of the burned disc to the size of just adding up all the photos it is much larger, which tells me the originals are there.
And here is the most interesting part - this behavior only seems to occur on things which were originally imported and manipulated in iPhoto 09. I can still burn and pull over albums. etc. from iPhoto 09 as long as they originated in a prior version.
I am using v8.02 (I keep all my software current)

Mike:
The iPhoto Library Manager 3.5b which also copies Faces and Places when copying album/events between libraries can be downloaded here. I've run it on some test libraries and it does include the Faces and Places metadata.
NOTE: The link will automatically download and place the application in your User/Downloads folder.

  • IPhoto 08 buggy on iMac G5?

I have just installed iPhoto 08 on my iMac G5. I installed it 'over' the previous installation of iPhoto 6.
What happens is this: I open a photo, experiment with some edits using the Adjust palette sliders, then zoom in by using the slider at the bottom right of the screen. At this point, the beachball starts to spin.
Either the screen takes a long time to refresh (ie very slow response) OR the beachball will spin and spin and spin, with no other option than to Force Quit.
I checked out the Activity Monitor whilst the iPhoto 08 app was hanging and the processor was running flat out.
I have an iMac G5 1.9mhz processor and 1GB of RAM. Photoshop CS3 runs like a dream on this machine, as does iPhoto 6.
Today at the Apple Store I tried out one of the new iMacs, running the very same commands on a high res image, then zoomed in, and was very fast, it could handle the same commands with absolutely no lags, no delays. iPhoto 08 runs very well on the latest machines.
Could it be that my iMac G5 is just too low spec to run iPhoto 08, or could there be a bug in the program? It seems to happen particularly when applying the sharpening and noise reduction commands, and then zooming in afterwards.
I'm also concerned that my iPhoto Library will no longer be readable if I go back to iPhoto 6, there was a warning when I first started the app for the first time that the library would no longer be readable by earlier versions of iPhoto.

For me the latest update has make linking to iTunes for a slideshow an excruciatingly slow operation, sometimes up to 1 minute. This is on a G5. All the other aspects of iPhoto are working for me. It's a direct result of the iLife 08 updater. Going back to iPhoto 7.0.1 or 2 does not speed it up so the problem seems to be outside iPhoto.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance. iPhoto doesn't not have to be closed to run it, just idle.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto quite buggy

Okay so I've been doing some intense iPhoto work (well, not really)... I just have about 800 pictures that I've been adding faces to, finding them on maps, and organizing them into events (I transferred these from an old Mac so they weren't organized at all). It was working fine for a while... but after a period of time when I tried to split photos from events to make them into their own event... the event wouldn't appear in the list (it was as if I deleted the photos... they were nowhere to be found) so I just control-Z'd it to bring the event back to a whole. So I closed iPhoto via force quit since when I clicked the red "x" it didn't quit... rebooted the application, and then fortunately I was able to edit fine and split events. However, upon closing it again... the app froze (well, the app still worked I think but the red yellow and green bubbles were frozen) and so I had to force quit it again.
So my questions are: do I need to worry that I've lost or may lose some photos?
Is iPhoto '09 unreliable and should I do something about it? I don't like that I've had to force quit it
twice in a row and that it simply stopped working over time

This seems to be a bug in iPhoto 8.0.4 that is triggering some kind of corruption to iPhoto libraries that can't be corrected via the usual rebuilds, etc. See the thread "Iphoto won't delete photos properly and then can only force quit to exit" for additional detail.
Right now the only immediate solution is to do a manual import of your Originals into a new library (or use one of the shareware/freeware tools that will essentially do that for you)...but in doing this you will lose all of your Albums, Faces , etc, so depending on how much of that kind of metadata you have in your library, that could be an extremely drastic step for you.
Personally, I'm holding out a bit to see what Apple comes up with, because doing all the Faces and Albums over again would be a Very Big Deal for me....there's hours and hours of work there that I'd rather not lose except as a last resort.

  • IPhoto 09 - Buggy and Slow

1 - All Faces interactions are unusably slow. Confirming, Add Missing Faces, selecting to move or name face frames.
2 - Found the same person twice in the same picture.
4 - Keeps missing the same person in a set of portrait photos (same outfit, lighting. Faces forward)
5 - No way (I could figure) to undo a face that the system was sure of that is wrong. Have to delete the face frame.
6 - In Faces the confirmed thumbnails are the completely wrong pictures though when you select them the full view is correct.
7 - Thumbnails in many Events are distorted/squashed.
8 - In Info window (off i icon) for Events selecting a Place doesn't stick. Start typing, menu comes up. Click on selection. Field still empty.
    9 - Some images can't be rotated.
10 - Places is confusing and difficult to add new places.

As I’m sure you recall from your careful reading of the Terms of Service you agreed to when you joined the Apple Discussions, this is a User to User forum. Apple aren’t here. They don’t promise to read anything here.
So iPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback is the route to go with this.
However, items 6 and 7, 8 and 9 sound like issues with your Library rather than iPhoto. I have no difficulty adding locations to Events or rotating pics.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • IPhoto (old-- version 8?) won't import photos from iPhone 5. Very buggy.

I have an old version of iPhoto that is very buggy (we have an 06 iMac, to be replaced next month). Admittedly, when I've been prompted to rebuild the cache, I don't (what does that do, anyway?). Lately, my problems have been: 1) Certain photos from my iPhone 5 continually re-import even though I check "Don't import duplicates." 2) Most concerning, photos from the past three months on my iPhone won't import to iPhoto. I get an ominous error message after iPhoto takes about an hour to go through the import process. On occassion, random photos (1 or 2) will import. Sometimes an image from a video (but not the actual video). My photos are trapped on my phone, currently not backed up. I have 1000+ photos on my iPhone, as I am sentimental and paranoid and don't want to delete them. Also--our photos are on an external hard drive. We also use TimeMachine and back up on a remote server through a service. I could live with losing everything on my Mac...but not my photos. The over 10K photos are painstackingly organized by folder and albums. Help me!!!

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download IPhoto Library Manager 4 for OS XC 10.6.8 and iPhoto  8.1.2 and later  or iPhoto Library Manager 3 (for OS X 10.5.8 and iPhoto 7.1.5 and earlier) and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 3) or Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu (iPLM 4) option.
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • IPhoto 9.4 update very buggy - HELP !!

Prior to installing iPhoto 9.4 three days ago I was using OS X 10.8.2 and iTunes 10.7. These updates were installed without any problems and upon launching iPhoto 9.4 it requires that the library be upgraded and I dutifully complied.
    Problem #1
I noticed was that when confirming potential Faces the widow displaying the faces does not scroll when displying faces only. It does scroll when displaying the photos - a selection possible with switch in the top right of the window.
    Problem #2
A more serious problem was that when syncing my Apple TV (1st generation), iPad 2 and iPhone 4S (both with iOS 6) the Photos tab in iTunes displayed extra events that do not exist (the names indicate old previously deleted ones). In addition, there is a long list of spurious (never existed), and empty events that are named with dates in the past month. As an example there are 6 events with the name "August 14" and they are shown to be empty. These extra and spurious events are only visible in iTunes when the Photos tab is selected when syncing my Apple TV, iPad or iPhone. None of the these extra events sync to any device even when selected, likely because they are empty.
    Problem #3
When displaying Events on the Apple TV, iPad or iPhone, they used to display in the sort order selected in iPhoto (View/Sorted by...). As an example I had them sorted to disply by date and descending, so that the most recent Events were visible at the top of the screen. When synced, they now display by date and ascending, regardless of how they are sorted in iPhoto. In addition, the list of Events displayed in iTunes appear by date/ascending and this is how they appear when synced.
I have never experinced such a disasterous update to any Apple software  before. I am in the proccess of restoring my older version of iPhoto and its librayy in the hope that this will fix these problems. Any suggestions from someone wiser than myself are welcome.

The bug in iPhoto has been identified and reported to Apple - they are reportedly working on a fix. The current version of iPhoto doesn't create "well formed" XML - so deleting and rebuilding the AlbumData.xml file may merely rebuild the problem. The Apple TV and iTunes can't read the bad XML, and the result is a scrambled mess.
If you can't wait for 9.4.1, then you might want to try editing your Photo Albums. For many people, the problems are due to the Photo Albums having songs associated with them, if the song name, album name, or artist name has an &, <, >, quotation mark or apostrophe in the name it will cause problems in the XML file (symptoms vary, depending on the specifics of what character was used and where it shows up).
You can go through each item in the left-hand column of iPhoto, one by one, and click the "sildeshow" icon (at the bottom of the iPhoto window, in the center) then choose a "safe" song, then click "play" (just for a second or two).
Or if you want, you can open the AlbumData.xml file and search for the "& " (don't search for the quotes, but do include a single space after the & ). That should zoom into the problem song name, and the Photo Album name will be just above that - you can then go into iPhoto and edit just that one Photo Album.
This won't work for everyone - the potential problem may affect Photo Album names, things you typed in comments - anything that gets recorded in the XML file - not just song names. And not just ampersands - but it is harder to search for apostrophes and quotation marks, < or > (unless your comfortable with "regular expressions"). It's also possible that yours is an unrelated problem, and just coincidental that the ampersand thing is happening at the same time (but I think they're likely related).
If you're lucky, your problem will be caused by an ampersand in a song name. If not, best thing to do is just wait for the fix in iPhoto 9.4.1.

  • Buggy/Instable when scrolling in Iphoto

And also when you're in an event?  My sister and I are both having the same problem.  It's seems like since the last update a week or so ago it started acting like this.  You can't scroll smoothly....track pad is very jumpy and in an event the same thing.  This only seems to happen in iPhoto.  And since were using two different Macs we couldn't figure it out.  Anyone else?

I'm having similar problems since the upgrade;  iPhoto hangs up every couple of minutes and I get the spinning beach ball.
Scrolling is also much jumpier than it used to be.
Several of my thumbnails have been honked up so that the wrong thumbnail is displayed for a few images.
Time to rebuild the library and hope for the best....

  • Changing fonts in iphoto book very buggy

When I tried to change either the font or font size on the cover and it OK, all fonts throughout the book changed. When clicking on return to default all fonts changed again, but not to the original default font........help.

I found some strange behaviour when changing fonts in a calendar I was producing. I found that clicking on the +Page Design+ button, which reapplies the default design for a particular page, fixed the problem for me. Annoying, though!

  • IPhoto 8.0.4 buggy

    Dear All
cannot print anymore borderless with canon iP4600 since updating to 8.0.4
in preview everything looks fine but when printing there is a white line on the right site and the pictue is increased!
Does anybody have the same problem?
What can I do? And how can I downgrade to 8.0.3?
    Thank you fir your help!

See my answer to your previous post. I don’t think the problem is with your app, I would suspect your Library - and downgrading the app won’t fix that.

  • Trying to delete iPhoto 6 thumbsegment.data files crashes Mac OS 10.4

    Summary:
Whenever I try to delete any of the thumb files from the iPhoto directory on my internal hard drive or my external backup drive, it crashes the computer (screen scrolls dark then says "Have to restart, hold button for several seconds" in multiple languages). This is true if I try to delete any single file or if I try to delete all the files (thumb32segment.data, thumb64segment.data, thumbJPGsegment.data). The panic message is:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x00102854): jnl: transaction too big (1582592 >= 1572352 bytes, bufsize 8192, tr 0x2733f7c bp 0x280286d0)
The actual "transaction too big" numbers can vary. All my software is current as of last night. I'm running 10.4.6 and I have 150G drive with +10G free space, 1.25 GHz, 1GB memory.
    Background:
I'm one of the people who experienced the extraordinarily sluggish version of iPhoto 6. In trying to fix it, I rebuilt my system from the hard drive up (including reinstalling everything)--no good. Apparently it was a known bug, a fix came out and my world was better. Until I tried to back up iPhoto.
I back up to an external hard drive by dragging and dropping.
    1) Once I was sure the patch worked, I dragged the iPhoto folder from my internal drive to my backup drive...and the system crashed.
    2) Figuring it was the old, buggy version causing the problem I dragged the old, external backup iPhoto folder to the trash and tried to empty the trash...and the system crashed.
    3) After a file-by-file test, I determined it was the initial 2 thumbs (thumb32 and thumb64) from the buggy version causing the problem. One of the reasons I pay the Mac premium is because I don't want to be a sys admin, but nonetheless I went to Ihnatko's Mac OS X book and found the sudo command for forcing the trash to empty files (sudo chflags nouchg ~/.Trash/*), executed the command, emptied the trash...and the system crashed.
    4) So I moved the old thumbs into a different folder on my external drive and dragged and dropped a backup. No problem. Until I tried to do it a second time after my next update to iPhoto and...the system crashed.
    So now I have:
    * old external backup (thumb32, thumb64)
    * new external backup (thumb32, thumb64, thumbJPG)
    * new internal source (thumb32, thumb64, thumbJPG)
and I can't backup or delete any of these files without the system crashing.
Does anyone have any ideas how I can get rid of the extraneous thumb files and get back to doing a simple drag-and-drop backup without crashing my system? (And yes, I've learned my lesson not to be an early adopter of iLife...but that doesn't help me now.)
FWIW, I'm having another problem with iPhoto or iTunes/iPod whereby iTunes/iPod has stopped recognizing iPhoto albums (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=530034&tstart=0). This happened long after the problem I've described here, but I'm including the link in case it's helpful.
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Good morning Old Toad.
    I did as you suggested:
    1) Booted from install CD.
    2) Ran Disk Utilities on internal hard drive--no repairs necessary. For good measure, did the same thing on external drive. Also no repairs necessary.
    3) Checked software update--no updates found. About this Mac said I was already running 10.4.7. For good measure, I downloaded the latest and installed it. Since it let me run the install, I'm not sure if I installed something new or reinstalled what I already had.
    4) I rebooted from CD, ran disk utilities, ran repair disk--no repairs necessary. Repaired permissions and a lot of permissions repaired.
    5) Tried to delete the files and the same old thing happened: kernel panic. The specific message:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x00102A08): jnl: transaction too big (1587712 >= 1572352 bytes, bufsize 8192, tr 0x29f1fb0 bp 0x2801de40)
So there's no change in my status.
I'm trying to delete the files because:
    A) They already take .5 Gb.
    B) I can't get rid of them ever. If I move the problem files to a different folder, I can only do one successful drag-and-drop backup to the external drive until the "new" thumb segments become unerasable just like the previous versions and crash the system.
    C) I can't even "just" drag and drop every file/folder except the thumbs, because that ends up crashing the system as well. So I have to drag and drop every file/folder in the iPhoto hierarchy individually. Which makes me less inclined to backup, which defeats the purpose of a backup.
    D) After the iPhoto fiasco I'm just crabby about all the Apple screw-ups I'm experiencing and I want to get them fixed.
Thanks for your help. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

  • IPhoto '11 refusing to detect ANY new faces in imported photos

I've been using iPhoto forever.  It's always "just worked."  I just got back from vacation and imported all of my photos.  After deleting half of them and doing only some very minor "tweaks" (adjusting levels, etc.) to a few of them, I wanted to name the faces.
I noticed that iPhoto didn't identify a single face in the 150 or so just-imported pics.
Also, the button to manually add a face is grayed out!
Tried "Detect Missing Faces" but it does nothing.
Any ideas?  Anybody seen this before?  This is a new one to me and I did browse the Discussions and haven't seen this one.
Thanks in advance for your help.

iPhoto 11 seems extremely buggy. I think I'm going to downgrade back to the prior version. Anyone have suggestions before I take this action?
Not really - have you upgraded to version 9.1.1?
    Problems:
    1) When ever I import new photos they no longer show up in new events or the "photos" grouping of all photos. They did get imported though and I can access them by selecting "last 12 months".
This can be a sort issue - they are there but not where you expect - look at the view menu ==> sore events
    2) If I manually try and split an existing event and all photos in the new event disappear from all listings.
How do you "manually" split an event?

  • How can videos be uploaded from iOS iPhoto to Flickr when they cannot be selected. (The Flickr iPhone app always gives a vague error message when video upload is attempted.)

I am trying to upload short MP4 videos from my iPad 2 running iOS 5.1.1 to Flickr. These videos were taken on a Panasonic FZ150, and I am able to upload videos from this camera from my iMac when I am at home. (I am currently thousands of miles from home, which is why I want to upload from my iPad.)
I can upload photos from iOS iPhoto, but when I select videos, the selection count does not increase, and so they are not uploaded.
There is no Flickr app for iPad, but I tried the iPhone app, and was able to upload photos. However, when I try to upload videos, I always immediately get the error message:
"An error occurred. We could not upload your video. Please try again."
Frustratingly, there is no indication of what the error is.
Finally, I tried the Flickr website uploader page, but all the "Choose File" buttons were dimmed, so apparently there is no attempt to integrate ithis page with iPad,.
I have had the same experience several times over the last few weeks in different locations, including private homes and hotels, none of them corporate offices with strong firewalls, and I am not running any firewall software other than standard iOS.
I welcome any suggestions, workarounds, etc., that will enable me to upload videos from IPad to Flickr.

    KRDHarris-
I am not familiar with Flickr, but found their support page at <Flickr Support>. You may get better help there than here.  I get the impression that the App is somewhat buggy.
The iTunes preview page indicates the App is for iPad as well as the iPhone.  <Flickr App Preview>

    Thanks for your reply
    I solved my problem,
Definitely a bug in syncing through itunes.
    - Connect Iphone with MacBook Pro through USB
    - Go to iphone on itunes, photos, deselect photo synchronization.
    - Sync (all pics will be removed from iphone)
    - Close itunes, iphoto, disconnect iphone
    - Select in finder: (home)-pictures-iphoto library.
    - Sec click on iphoto library and choose "show package contents"
    - Delete iPod Photo Cache
    - Close finder
    - Empty trash
    - Reconnect iphone
    - Allow photo synchronization again and everything works smooth.
After this, changes made in iphoto are instantaneously reflected in iphone photos.
Once every hundred photos, one gets detached from iphoto and then changes are no longer reflected (buggy) :-(
In this case I erase the photo in iphoto, sync, go back to iphoto trash, reestablish the photo from the trash and sync again.
Hope this improves. Still have to try cloud though.
    Thanks

  • Did you have buggy Mavericks issue after installing on Macbook Air Mid 2012?

Before I have upgraded my OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.3 to Mavericks 10.9 it runs so smoothly and no issues or hanging that I encounter. But just this morning when I installed Mavericks, I have the following issues:
1.) When I was adding a book(pdf and epud files) in iBook, the Finder malfunctioned, coz when I browse the books to it's location so I can add some more again, the Sidebar icons disappeared and only the names left. And when I go to the location of the files using Finder, the content is nowhere to be found, just a symbol on the window’s status bar that it is loading or busy on something.
2.) When I go to the Launchpad, when I scroll to left and right to find the apps I’m looking using the touchpad, it's not as smooth as before. It tends to halt on sliding to the other groups of apps, seems like there’s a friction stopping it from sliding smoothly all the way to the next group of apps.
3.) Updating the Apps from App Store seems cumbersome like the iPhoto and iMovie, coz when the internet fails or drops its signal for a while or so, you go back and download everything again, and when you hover the mouse to see the progress of the downloaded app, it shows for example 22mb of 1gb then shifted to 300mb of 1gb then back to 22mb of 1gb then back again. It’s not accurate and going berserk.
4.) And I don't know if it is just me, but the screen profile have changed a bit coz the red color of the Power Point icon seem too red and everything that has a hint of red color seems exaggerated, it’s too bright red. I'm just not sure it might be the GUI style of the Mavericks. . .
Anyway, have any of you experienced these kinds of issues on your Macbook Air Mid 2012?
Hopefully this could be fixed and Apple would seed an update in no time.

Even on my MacBook Pro Haswell (2013) 15 inch retina with a GT 750 2gb.
The Things in Mavericks that really make me :
    1. The Launchpad is buggy when i scroll to the left or right... sometimes it doesn't even respond at all.
    2. Safari and Other Apps Like AppStore freez sometimes, and i need to force quit everytime, because its not           responding.
    3. Bootcamp Windows 8.1 <---- NOT 8 Support (Bad Keyboard- Facetime camera- drivers,
Icons (brightness, sound) are ugly on retina screen) + GPU Drivers i can't update (maybe that's normal).
    4. iTunes is very SLOW when Scrolling the Albums (i know its 2880x1800 and that's heavy for GPU) But it's just     not a good 'Experience'.
    5. Gaming its realy good on this MacBook, but please make the drivers better, i know this GT 750 GPU can do           better.

  • Can't update iPhoto in Mac App store or Software update... Help!

I am stuck in iPhoto 9.1.5  Using Lion iPhoto purchased through mac app store.  Please help me

Maybe it's just a bug, Mac App Store seems a Beta to me for how laggy and buggy it is. Usually when it says something about another account it's 'cause you have pirated software and the App Store receipt inside it is indeed connected to another account, making it impossible to download the update. If that's your case what you have to do is to right click on iPhoto and select "show package content", open the "Content" folder and delete the "_MASReceipt" folder inside it, now the update will show up on Software Update.
A user posted on another site a way to solve this.
It worked for me, hope it helps.
