IPhoto '09 can't "locate" a recent set of imported images

ISSUE
NOTE: This is for a MANAGED iPhoto library NOT a Referenced one, and the original image files DO exist and are located in both the source location and the iPhoto Library.
Late last friday (11/6) suddenly started getting the following error messages on a specific set of images imported into iPhoto from an external Hard Drive:
• The photo “classes.nib” could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found.
The quoted filename varies, but are all like the above, NOT the actual image filename.
I've had the message before, (rarely and not for years) but normally the filename in quotes is the name of the selected image i.e. "IMG_2251.jpg, etc. and has always been due to the actual file no longer existing for one reason or another (usually some thing I did)
The error message only appears during Preview of the image set in the Library >"Photos" index section.
I am currently ignoring the warning, since:
• the images DO appear to exist (in iPhoto Library> Originals > [the year] > [the date]
• are obviously being managed by iPhoto,
• can be edited by iPhoto (see more info below)
But this obviously makes me nervous about the integrity of my photo library (i do have time machine and some disc media backups of many (not all, yet) albums, but still ...
CONFOUNDING FACTORS
1. Despite the error message:
• the image preview appears (not an "!" or "?") before and after dismissal of the message
• I can continue on to edit the image from the preview step.
• I can right click on the preview, select "Show Original File" and iPhoto locates the original image in the iPhoto Library Package file.
2. It does not appear if:
• I ignore the message and continue on to to edit the image
• I preview the image in the "Library > Events" index section.
• I preview the image in the "Recent > Last Import" index section.
3. Trashing, and emptying trash (from any index view) then re-importing them hasn't helped.
4. All offending photos can be opened, viewed and edited in various image viewers, editors (Preview.app, the Finder Quickview, Photoshop CS 3, Graphic Converter
5. Subsequent imports don't appear to have the problem.
SUGGESTS:
• A database problem?
RESOLUTION STEPS:
Attempted with no corrective results.
1. Trashed problem photos and emptied iPhoto Trash, reimported images from Ext. HD via drag-n-drop to library index
2. Above, re-imported via File > Import to Library ...
3. Above 1 and 2 import steps with files copied to Local HD
4. Step 3 above with duplicated files (via File > Duplicate)
5. Opened a photo file in Preview, did save as ..., imported into iPhoto
6. Step 5 above with Photoshop CS3, slightly cropped image, saved as, imported into iphoto.
7. Ran "Disk Utility > Verify and Repair Disk" from Snow Leopard Install Disc (there were file and folder count mismatch issues)
8. Re-ran Verify afterwards with clean bill of health.
RECREATION STEPS:
Unknown on how to initially trigger but the last and only iPhoto Console logs appear to be from around the time the issue began:

RESOLVED (if not altogether answered)
Performed the iPhoto database rebuild cha-cha again - this time selecting ALL checkboxes (previously only selected "Rebuild from backup)
After rebuild, some photos appeared to be fixed, but photos that still showed the the error were all within specific Photo Rolls and DID NOT allow me to "show original file" on right click.
On inspection within the iPhoto Library package, the remaining problem photo files were all ALIASES, not actual image files.
Although the error dialog allowed me to to try and find the missing original, browsing for it didn't work. All image files listed in the browser were grayed out and not selectable.
SO, not sure if this was kosher, but the following seemed to clear things up:
* found real images for the aliased files on archived media
* copied the real files over the aliases of the same file name
* accepted finders warning that I was replacing files of the same name
* returned to the iPhoto rolls and previewed the previously error prone images
NOTE: I DID NOT close iPhoto while I was doing this. Not sure how dangerous that was.
iPhoto seemed none the wiser, and the error message was gone. (oddly, initially the first photo in each affected roll still threw up the error, but when I moved on the the next one and came back, all seemed well and the message was gone)
Did not appear to be a rhyme or reason to which rolls contained aliases and which didn't - photo/file date stamps weren't contiguous (so it wasn't a problem of a series of event imports from the camera/card.)
Best I can figure is somehow some sets were imported as referenced files although my iPhoto is set to use a managed library.
I'm in the process of consolidating some older manually managed image archives, so I don't know when this happened, or if it's the result of some accidental duplication, aborted import or what. I DO know that I had not encountered this error before, and I know I reviewed the affected rolls some time in the past, long after I had imported them.
Well, all seems to be on the mend. So life is good.
Except for those crufty leftovers. May still want to do something about that.
Thanks to Terence for leading me to look in the right places.

Thanks Terence. What a relief. I still don't understand what the book I read was talking about then. Here's a quote from the section I was referring to in "iPhoto 08: The Missing Manual" book, p 91 (ISBN: 0596-516185):
"Note, however, that the instant you edit a TIFF-format photo (Chapter 7), iPhoto converts it into JPEG.
That's fine if you plan to order prints or a photo book (Chapter 11) from iPhoto, since JPEG files are required for those purposes. But if you took that once-in-a-lifetime, priceless shot as a TIFF file, don't do any editing in iPhoto-don't even rotate it- if you hope to maintain its perfect, pristine quality."
After my test results, I thought maybe this was something that had changed from iPhoto 08 to iPhoto 09, so I went to the bookstore yesterday and checked the same book for iPhoto 09, and there it was, the same quote! (on a different page, of course).
Anyway, thanks once again for your confirmation that my test was indeed correct. Linda

Sorry, I've never seen this error. Hopefully someone with more information will answer soon.
Does setting your hostname by editing /etc/hostname not work for some reason? I know the wiki says you should use hostnamectl to set the hostname, but I think you can just edit /etc/hostname and be done with it.
Well from the post prior to you I am thinking you can, I was just trying to follow the wiki as written. I am currently running on a restored copy so I can work because it was messing with stuff I use. I will attempt update again as soon as AUR is back up.
thanks for everyones help with this

  • IPhoto 5 can not recognize Panasonic G1 RAW files.

I learned by an unfortunate experience that the iPhoto libraries are very sensitive. I have thousands of photos in these libraries, all backed up. I never upgraded from iPhoto 5, which came bundled with this Mac. I now have the Panasonic DMC-G1 digital camera. This camera is supposed to be compatible with iPhoto. iPhoto 5 can upload only jpegs but not the RAW images.
I once read where someone upgraded only to find a new iPhoto version could not recognize their old libraries. I don't want to mess with the these libraries and so I'd like to keep iPhoto 5 functioning.
Question: In order to get the newest version of iPhoto do I need to purchase iLife?
Question: Can I leave iPhoto 5 installed AND install a newer version that will be compatible with my Panasonic G1?

Newer versions of iPhoto (particularly iPhoto '09) are more stable and have more recovery features than iPhoto 5 does
In general if you stay out of the iPhoto library you will not have problems - although computers do fail and the backups are important (I have several backups including a daily clone, Time Machine and periodic backups to DVD )

While someone may have had this problem, it is not normal nor is it common - the general case is that libraries upgrade flawlessly and the vast majority of people find that after an upgrade their libraries are identical to the way they were before the upgrade
Question: In order to get the newest version of iPhoto do I need to purchase iLife?
    Yes
Question: Can I leave iPhoto 5 installed AND install a newer version that will be compatible with my Panasonic G1?
Yes - but it is easy to mess things up with multiple versions running and it would be very complicated to have your new photos in one library and your olds one in a different library (different versions of iPhoto can not access the same library)
I do not keep old versions of iPhoto - Old Toad does - if you want to do that ask here and he can advise on how to accomplish it and teh issues to watch for

  • I can't import images, I just get a dashed frame.

I have been using iPhoto since version 1.0 and have very rarely ran into trouble. But all of the sudden I can't import pictures anylonger!
During import I can see the pictures as previews... but as soon as it is done importing I only see a dashed line as a frame. Everytime I open iPhoto it tells me that I have "x photos in my library that aren't imported." And it asks me if I want to import... When I say yes, iPhoto imports them again (as before, with preview) and makes a new album called "rescued images", but they are still empty/dashed frames.
Every now and then when I open iPhoto, it also asks me to update the thumbnails, when I click yes it is busy for a while but the problem remains.
I cant edit them, neither in iPhoto or extrenal editor. I can't show original or show file. I can't make emails out of the imported images.
The rest of the Library works fine... but nothing new can be imported. Niether draging or importing through camera works. Current version that I am using is 6.0.3.
    Please help me!
    Thank you.

  • Can't locate imported iPhoto files in Finder

I recently imported a series of pictures into iPhoto. However I can't locate these picture files on Finder..What happened was I had to fire up iPhoto app each time and right click to 'Show File'. It said the path was user/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/...
I want to locate these files on Finder, however, when I clicked on user directory user/Pictures/iPhoto Library I can't drill down further. It seems that 'Originals' folder is missing. When I show package contents though, this folder showed up. This is a frustrating experience for me because I can't upload the pictures to the web, or easily find them.
Does anyone has any idea if this is normal behavior or is there a way I can easily access the list of pictures I've imported without firing up the iPhoto? Appreciate any response. Thanks very much.

    spirlie
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Does anyone has any idea if this is normal behavior or is there a way I can easily access the list of pictures I've imported without firing up the iPhoto
This is perfectly normal behaviour for v7 of iPhoto. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.
However, better to use one of these:
10.5 users: If you use the extended Open or Attach dialogue (with Column View) you can scroll to the bottom of the Shortcuts and find the Media browser there. Select any pic you want from there.
Another way to access the files with iPhoto not running, is to create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Otherwise:
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.

  • Help! iPhoto alerts pop up that say, "The photo "DSC06691.JPG" cannot be opened because the original cannot be located." I can locate original, but I have multiple images with same name!

Recently my library prompted me to rebuild due to inconsistencies that were found in library. Now alerts pop up that say it can't locate the original of an image, so I have an option to cancel or locate it. I can locate the file, however, there are usually 2 or 3 photos with the same file name! Not sure which one it is trying to locate etc. I have a feeling this is the problem. Not sure how it happened. Has anyone had this happen to them?? iPhoto library hasn't rebuilt because there are so many pop up alerts...I have a feeling it's a big problem. I am going to attempt to select one image for each one and see what happens, but I am concerned what the outcome will be.
My camera cards are already deleted (I knew I should have kept them!!). We do have time capsule, so I am assuming I can go back, but I am worried that iphoto will do the same thing. It just started doing it about two weeks ago and it didn't correspond with any photo uploads. I hope someone can help!

Are you running a managed or referenced library?
If it's a managed library apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

iTunes account is what you use to make iTunes purcahses.
iTunes library is what is on your computer.
It says my phone can only be set up woth one itunes account. How do I remove the previous account?
No, it tells you it can only be sync'd with one iTunes library.
Simplest way is to copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder (thisis the iTunes library) from old computer to new computer.

  • Terrance Devlin answered a question about iPhoto (4-2012) re:copying iPhoto Library to an ExHD, and losing all the albums. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button. Can anyone help?

I tried to move my images (over 25,000) to an External Hard drive to open up some memory, hoping to make my computer run faster. It took three hours to move the images and I see them all in the mac's menus. However when I try to open them with iPhoto now, none appeared. and when I tried to import them back to the main HD they come in to iPhoto just fine, but not with the albums nor any of the massive organization i'd created in the original. this represents years of images, and I can't imagine that I'd have to recopy them into folders/albums again.
Terrance Devlin answered a similar question back in April of last year. He said to make sure the ExHD is formatted to MAC OS Extended (Journaled) and to move the library to the ExHD and then open iPhoto with the option button and select "Choose Library" from the resulting menu.
Command "I" tells me that the new drive is formatted correctly. I can't locate the "Choose Library" when I open iPhoto with the opt button.
First, I wondered if the application needs to be on the same drive as the Library. I sure would like to know if I can find out how to restore all the folders I had them in. Terrance's advice helped the user that had asked the question.

    Here are Apple's instructions:
If you are using iPhoto ’06 or earlier, you will need to follow these steps to tell iPhoto where the Library is now located:
Hold down the Option key on the keyboard and open iPhoto. Keep the Option key held down until you are prompted to create or choose an iPhoto Library.
    Click Choose Library.
Locate and select the iPhoto Library in its new location.
    (from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229 )
Below (in the link below) is what you should see when holding down the option key and opening iPhoto. Keep holding down the option key until this dialogue comes up. You want to select the Choose Library button.

The pic sync is one way - computer to iPhone.
You should be storing all of your photos on your computer.  Jut sync them to your iPhone.
