IPhoto 09 Erratic

Problem: The wife is viewing an event in iPhoto 09 on the iMac. Every so often, a random image won't completely open...it enlarges part way, then hangs, then the beach ball. Or, the image opens all the way (filling the work area), but doesn't finish focusing. Or, when clicking an opened image, it reduces only part way back to thumbnail size, then hangs. If she clicks outside the application window (i.e. on exposed desktop area), the the process completes (i.e. the beachball disappears, the image finishes enlarging, focusing or reducing back to thumbnail size...everything is fine). On rare occasions, clicking on the desktop area when iPhoto is hanging results in a copy of the image being pasted onto the desktop! I have no such problems when I'm the logged in user. Both our libraries are virtually identical (approx 7K images). The libraries are referenced, images are stored on a QNAP TS-409, connection is ethernet. I also have a MBP which is setup identical except it's wi-fi, no problems with either user.
What I've tried so far:
1. Deleted the iphoto plist file. No luck.
2. Deleted all of the photos from the iPhoto library, then reimport all photos from the NAS. Didn't work either.
3. Rebuilt the library (using optcomlaunch iPhoto). Selected all options except 'recover orphans' and 'rebuild from auto backup'. Same result.
4. Created a new library (opt+launch iPhoto) & imported all photos again from the NAS. Of course it didn't work.
I'm at wits end...I don't understand why she's having these problems but when I log in and try...and try...and try, I can't get it to mess up. Any ideas?

Thanks Terrance for taking the time to reply. Please pardom my ignorance, but when you refer to the Library, do you mean the collection of photos, or are you refering to the 'iPhoto Library' package file? Just to be clear, the photo files are on the NAS, the iPhoto Library is on the machine. In any case, I'm sure when I first bought the NAS (about a year ago), I connected directly to the iMac and formatted it to HFS+, then connected it to the router. I'll have to try to figure out how to confirm what it's format is tonight, couldn't figure it out this morning. I'm still baffled why I have no problems when I'm logged in, the problem seems to be only with the wife as a user account. Again, thanks for your time.

  • Erratic Movement of Marker Pins in iPhoto 9.5 for Mac

Newest version of iPhoto with Apple Maps seems to have a real problem when trying to manually place marker pins with precision in small Places map (i.e. - fine-tune location).  New pop-up-and-place-down routine in software seems to be VERY vulnerable to erratic jumps, especially vertical, when trying to fine tune location manually.  Pin can end up miles from intended spot, even when starting from zoomed-in location!
Anyone else having this problem?  Anyone know a fix for it?

I have been having the same issue - but with iPhoto '09 (v8.1.2). I used to be able to use the mouse to swipe across the map to go after a certain place rather easily, but now after a small swipe the map area stays in place or moves very slightly. I have to hold the mouse down and move it very far on the screen to have a new area show without it snapping back. When zoomed in, the swipe barely works at all.
It is very aggravating especially since I want to place pins manually much of the time instead of typing in a city (since the locations aren't in a city).
The issue started happening for me about the same time, I believe.

  • My 2011 Imac 27" has been crashing and running very erratically and slowly. The only change has been the update to 10.8.1, I will paste the consol kernal panic report.  Is there a software conflict?

Hi, first time posting on the forum. I own a 2011 IMAC i5 with 12gb of ram 27 inch. Over the last five days the computer has been crashing and running very erratically. When the computer has crashed the entire computer has become unresponsive and frozen, requiring a reboot or two. At other times the computer has slowed way down and the dreaded spinning beachball has appeared and the computer takes its sweet time trying to process something. Iphoto has also crashed independently when the beahball will not disappear. THE entire system is running way below its usual stellar quad performance. I have run a ram test and everything has come back clean, I have fixed any broken permissions, and deleted any newly added software (starcraft2). There is over 250Gb of hard drive free and the activity monitor shows no unusual processes. The computer automatically updated it self recently to 10.8.1 has this caused a conflict with some software? Or is there a deeper problem?
Below are the console reports. There are also reports for unversalaccessd  ,  mdworker, Isregister, loginwindow, iphoto, DMproxy which can be supplied.
    Thanks for any help.

  • How do I "Add to Library" when iPhoto won't recognise selected photos?

A few months ago I was unable to import photos from the same Canon camera I've always used with iPhoto. Despite a number of steps taken, the problem has not resolved.
As I was getting a few erratic problems I decided to rebuild the computer (back up, wipe hard disk, re-install all software,etc.). I then imported the photos from the camera as usual. Last night they imported properly. Tonight those new photos are do not appear in the Library window of iPhoto. Those new photos are, however, in the iPhoto folder. When I try File/Add to Library, I get the message "Unreadable Files: 1 The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognised file type or the files may not contain valid data). The message then gives the path to the library "Users/Shared/iPhoto Library/2005".
    Extra information:
    *iPhoto Library in a shared folder so that my partner can access them from her Account;
    *there are 2500 photos in my library;
    *the photos are in .jpg format;
    *I've always used the same camera - Canon IXUS v3;
    *they imported OK yesterday but have disappeared today;
*I get the same result whether I try to Add to Library one photo or multiple folders of photos.
*I've read a few threads on these discussion pages but the answers don't seem applicable - if only because of the inconsistency (ie importing OK yesterday and being problematic today)
I'd be grateful for anyone's help!
    iMac & iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I think I understand now. I am thinking you placed these files in the iPhoto Library folder yourself. You need to drag them to the desktop and import them from there, by either dragging them into an open iPhoto viewing window or using the command File>add to library within iPhoto.
    Some more info for you:
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database and your hard drive (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
    About the iPhoto Library folder
Don't forget that in Library view you can Control click on any picture and get a contextual menu with many options. One is to revert to original.

  • Mobileme gallery in iPhoto, strange behavior

Frequently but not always, I open iPhoto and the items in my Mobileme Gallery have the rotating upload ikon as if uploading. iPhoto is slow and behaves erratically. I force quit and when I start again iPhone works normally and all items in the Gallery have the broadcast ikon. What's the problem?

Do you have your MobileMe gallery setup so others can upload to it? If so then iPhoto is checking the site to update the gallery in iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto '08 very slow upload for calendar / books?

    Hi,
I'm having a LOT of problems with uploading my 2008 Calendar projects. I've created a Calendar in iPhoto. The total size is 22 MB. When I click "Buy Now", it goes through the process of assembling the calendar, and then starts uploading the files to Apple. But the upload process is VERY SLOW.... it uploads maybe a hundred KB a minute or so, then usually stalls out and I get an error message saying "There was an error sending your files to Apple. Retry?"
-I've tried this at least 40-50 times over the past week (yes, these are Christmas presents for the grandparents!).
-At first I figured it was bandwidth at the Apple side, so I've tried it at all hours of the day and night, with no effect.
-I've tried it on wireless network at home, as well as plugged directly into network at both home and work.
-I have been able to get 2 orders to go through, the rest have all failed. I've actually received one of the orders, and the calendars look great!
-My broadband connection is fine... I'm able to upload pictures to Shutterfly, Flickr, and via FTP with NO problems at all and very rapid throughput. Speedtest.net shows my upload and download speeds are fine.
The odd thing is... When I watch the Activity Monitor, during assembly of the calendar I see high CPU utilization and very little network utilization from iPhoto (as I would expect). But once the files start uploading, I see a few spikes in outgoing network traffic, then erratic spikes of outbound data (nothing sustained). When I send large batches of files through FTP, or other upload I get sustained outbound network traffic. After a few minutes... I hear the fan on my MacBook cranking up, even though the CPU activity is idle on the activity monitor.
My theory: this is a software problem in iPhoto, NOT a network problem. Possibly from one of the recent iPhoto or security updates? I suppose this could be a corrupted preferences file, but don't know which ones I can safely delete. My iPhoto library is working fine, no errors in that.
Any suggestions? Santa will bring you good karma if you can help me get these calendars to the grandparents soon!

There were a couple of cases of this reported after v7 was launched.
    Some things to try:
    1. Make sure you're up-to-date - iPhoto is up to 7.1.1 now.
    2. Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    3. Try delete the com.apple.iphoto.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder

  • Corrupted iPhoto File?

I'm getting some very erratic behavior when employing the 'Adjust' settings: noise filling up the screen incrementally in rectangular patches.
    Here's a link to a screenshot:
    http://s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g367/swiftyj/
I'm wondering if the 'iPhoto' file is corrupted?
    Recommendations?

Then I would suspect that you have an issue with the video system in your Mac. Post on the MacBook forum see if anyone over there has a suggestion.

  • IPhoto '08 and Leopard

I am using an iMac G5 with 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM, 160 GB Hard Drive and recently upgraded to OS 10.5.1 Leopard. I am using iPhoto '08 Version 7.1.1 (354) and currently have just over 3000 photos (8.2 GB) in the library.
When I try to scroll in the photo viewing window when in "Photos" mode in the source list it is extremely slow, erratic and jerky. Also when in this mode even moving the "Zoom in/Zoom out" slider is slow and jerky. I don't check the "Outline" or "Drop Shadow" in the prefs.
On the other hand when I go to "Events" mode in the source list everything seems to be smooth and fairly rapid, certainly by comparison. I am puzzled and very frustrated by this especially since I went to the trouble and expense to upgrade my memory to 1.5 GBs. Is Leopard the culprit or is it my latest version of iPhoto? Or both?

    jerrydav:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't think it's the amount of memory that's the culprit. 1.5G is plenty. Is iPHoto slow in opening? Do you open into the Photo section with all thumbnails displayed? If so, select show Event names and close all of the events before shutting down iPhoto. Control click on of of the event triangles to open or close all at the same time. Having all the thumbnails open and fairly large can slow iPhoto a bit.
How much free space do you have on your boot drive? Too little can definitely affect performance, not only of iPhoto but the system and other applications. Report back with how much free space you have.
    Happy Holidays

  • Jumpy iPhoto v9.4.2(710.42)

Not sure if anyone else is seeing this but when I use iPhoto, it constantly and erratically jumps from which ever folder I'm reviewing to the "Last Import" folder, even when editing photos.
I'm running 10.8.2 on a mid-2012 MacBook Air.  I recently upgraded from a MacBook Pro and this issue existed previously on the MBP as well so I'm assuming its not just me.  I'd be greatful to find if someone has figured out a fix for this.
    Thanks

Make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Anyone having this problem when using iPhoto and iMovie?

I've posted this question in the iMovie forum without much luck. I hope someone here may have some ideas.
I make iMovies that are largely composed of still photos. Recently I'm having trouble with the preview screen in iMovie. When I click on a photo in the media browser it will not show up in the Preview pane but the little scrubber runs across the bottom anyway. If I click "apply" the photo will import into the iMovie timeline and I can then see it in the preview pane...sometimes. Sometimes not. It is the erratic nature of this problem that is driving me buggy (pardon the pun).
Sometimes the picture will do exactly what it supposed to -- pop up in Preview and I can make adjustments. Other times, no. Sometimes it is pictures right next to one another -- one works the other doesn't.
Is anyone else having a problem like this. My thought now is that it may be related to the size of the library since the problem seems to be on large libraries whereas projects that I do with 100 pictures or so (in a seperate project library) don't give me any grief but my large travel libraries do.
    Thanks.

Another possibility might be the color profile bug that was introduced with iPhoto 6.0.5 and, maybe, Quicktime 7.1.3. It's a long shot but if Terence's suggestion doesn't help you can try the following:
1 - download the "Embed sRGB Profile" Automator application from Toad's Cellar.
2 - unzip it and drop the files that are giving you problems onto it.
3 - import those newly embedded files into iPhoto and see if they work.
As I said it's a long shot but worth a try if other attempts fail.
    Do you Twango?

  • Friend unable to save photo sent from iPhoto

This is weird but maybe one of you have encountered it. A friend who has Windows XP :>( can view photos I send from iPhoto but she apparently can't SAVE them. It may be a problem peculiar to her machine. I tried attaching one directly to e-mail but it's way too big. I tried using the FILE/EXPORT method, resizing to half size which worked on my end and am waiting to hear if she could save it.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I sent out a plea for help to knowledgeable people in my e-mail address book (amazing how few but then - I don't count myself as knowledgeable).
Apparently this is an actual problem - but it’s erratic. One person e-mailed the following:
“Well, I saved this into my file folder on my pc...then I opened it and it was there. Then I copied it and put it into this e-mail to send to you.”
Another person - who was manager of a Windows Forum that I belonged to and very knowledgeable sent the following:
“It would not open in Internet Explorer.
I tried it again using Irfanview (http://www.irfanview.com/).
Right click>copy>paste in Irfanview>save as....it worked. Irfanview is a free photo editing software.
It does work in Paint. Right click copy>paste in Paint>save as a Jpeg”
So the problem is solved - by outsiders without a Mac - LOL. I should have thought of Irfanview - I do have it - via Boot Camp on my Mac- and on my old PC which is not connected to the internet. I wish Irf had a Mac version - it isn’t a highly sophisticated photo editing program but it can open files that no other programs can & is spot on when it comes to resizing.
    My friend has responded:
“Hi: Well I downloaded Irfanview and low and behold, it worked. I now have your picture as my screensaver. Thanks for all the help! Looks like something I should keep in mind when I have other files or whatever I can't open.”

  • Can no longer access iPhoto from the iMovie camera browser..not working. Also the Inspector tool not working properly. Cannot change clip duration.

How can I fix the INSPECTOR Tool?   Clip duration is not working properly, it is very erratic.  You type a number and a different one comes up on the clip.
Suddenly the iPhoto Camera browser in iMovie is not working properly either.  Can not access my iPhotos to include them in iMovie project.

    Have you tried this?
From the "HOME" screen, go to "SETTINGS > PRIVACY > PHOTOS" and see if iMovie is listed in the "PHOTOS" page. If it is, then tap the iMovie switch to "ON"
Now your Videos & Photos should be accessible in the iMovie App.

  • HT1229 Moving my IPhoto library to my external hard drive Seagate 1.5TB

My computer is an IMac late 2006. She's been running really slow and erratic. My IPhoto has over 5K photos which may be the culprit.
I have a Seagate External hard drive with 1.5 TB capacity with very little data stored. I would like to move my IPhoto library to my external hard drive, to improve the performance of my computer. I am unable to locate my external hard drive even though it is connected to the IMac. Can some one help?
    Shaiboy48

Suer as long as it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
I am not sure what this mean
I am unable to locate my external hard drive even though it is connected to the IMac

  • Is it possible to sync an iPad with more than one iPhoto Library?

I just backed up my iPhoto library to an external hard-drive to create space on my iMac hard-drive. I then decided to copy and import part of the old library back into the new as I am not finished working with some pictures. The order that they show up is really erratic. I think it would just be easier to be able to sync using files from both libraries. Is this possible and if so how?

Thanks for the tip and more importantly taking the time! I never thought of looking in the App store, will do.
I really hate the way that the application iPhoto files jpegs. The same goes for iTunes!

  • IPhoto 9.4.2 - Unable to Fix Red-Eye

Since upgrading to iPhoto 11  v 9.4.2 with OS 10.8.3, I am unable to Auto-Fix Red-Eye in my photos.
And even the Manual fix is erratic.
This compares very unfavourably with the ease of dealing with red-eye in previous versions of iPhoto/Mountain Lion.
There are no unrecognized faces involved.
I did delete the preference file com.apple.iPhoto.plist in my Home Folder/Library/Preferences folder.
I could not find a Cache.db cache file in Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder to delete.
I have Rebuilt the library using Control-Click to open iPhoto as well as by using iPhotoLibrary Manager.
No improvement in the ability to get rid of Red-Eyes!
    Appreciate any suggestions.
    ...John

Just talked to Apple Support for iPhoto
    Auto-Fix Red-Eye is not working in iPhoto 11 v. 9.4.2!!
It is a bug that will be corrected in an upcoming update..no info available when this will occur!!
