IPhoto 09 facebook integration design botch with shared library

Like, I suspect, a lot of people with a family Mac we have multiple accounts so we can have our own setup, but we pool all our photos together into a shared library (per Apple's recipe, using a separate volume without permissions) so we can all browse our common photos...after all, the pictures of us our more likely to come from other people's cameras, and vice versa.
This worked fine in the last version of iPhoto, but the implementation of facebook integration has a serious flaw. The facebook metadata is stored in the iPhoto library (though it seems not the passwords, thankfully), instead of a user's personal directory. This means when I look at the shared library, I see the facebook folders the OTHER users of the mac created, which are unwriteable to me, since of course we have separate facebook accounts.
This is a design flaw. The facebook folders should be personal info, not visible in the shared library, or (better yet) I should be able to have a shared library for iPhoto and separate personal libraries, then I could make my own choices.

  • Help with Shared Library Errors?

I am getting a Shared Library Error (The application "APP NAME HERE" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "1<APP NAME HERE><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_PrintCore>") whenever I try to open a non-Mac application (Adobe or Microsoft, basically). And when I try to print, I cannot adjust anything in the Page Setup, else the application crashes.
Problems began right after a Software Update: to 10.4.8 (and iTunes to 7.0.1).
Any thoughts? I have seen references here and elsewhere to various shared library error issues, with solutions that have worked for some people sometimes, ranging from dowloading the newest version of Quicktime to archiving everything and reinstalling the system software.

I saw you had posted in the other topic and were
advised to start a new one. But did you try any of
    the other approaches?
Yes. I've been trying simpler things first, such as removing certain caches from my Library.
    It helps to be
more specific about the particular applications.
Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and In Design 2.0.2. Microsoft Word 11.0 and Excel 11.0 are the ones that give me the shared library error. At the same time (since the upgrade to OS 10.4.8 and iTunes 7.0.1), I have been having trouble with my printer, a Canon i850 (printer software quits with each printing, although the printer does print the item; and trying to adjust Page Setup causes whatever application I'm in to crash).
    Did you look at Yo
u receive a "Shared library" error message when you
start Office for Mac programs for example?
Not until you suggested it. Thanks. It has some of the same suggestions, though — no new ones. I've been trying to avoid the archive/install option, but I guess I'm headed that way.
You say you have iTunes 7.0.1, what version of
    Quicktime do you have?
    QuickTime Player 7.1.3.
Unfortunately there doesn't (as yet) seem to be a
single fix for all these errors. We'll just have to
    keep trying!
    That's the sense I'm getting.
Thank you for your attemps to help.

  • Question about upgrading iTunes multiple computers with shared library

    Greetings,
I have a question about upgrading to the current version of iTunes.
Currently, my household uses 3 Mac computers (2 Powerbook 17in laptops and a Mack Mini). We are all (currently) on system 10.4.11 (with iTunes 9.2.1). Between the 3 computers we have a shared iTunes music and video library on a networked high capacity hard drive.
We recently purchased an iPad. In order to make it easy for updates and to use media from our iTunes shared library I decided that we should upgrade the systems on our home computers to Snow Leopard. I have ensured that all the computers have at lease 2 Gb of RAM and adequate hard drive space.
The only possible problem I see is that one of the Powerbook laptops uses the old Motorola processor. (This is one of the last Powerbooks to use that processor.) I don’t think this computer can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
My question is, if I upgrade 2 of the computers (and iTunes in the process), will I still be able to access the shared iTunes library using the older computer with the older system and iTunes? Will the upgrade process change the iTunes library in such a way that the one older computer will no longer be able to properly access that library?
Are there any other problems I might encounter having a mixed system/iTunes environment?
    Thank you,
    Tim

Just a thought. Should I somehow open iTunes on MBP2 using MBP1's Library file??
both Macs can access the same library file, however, only one at a time !
to do that, you would ideally have the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) on the external. then, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes while holding the option key, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
or, you could have two separate libraries and keep those in sync using third party tools such as Syncopation, TuneRanger or SuperSync.
for purchases from the iTunes store, you could set up _*Home Sharing*_ - it can be configured to automatically transfer new purchases to home shared libraries.
Can I create a script to have MBP1 always save the iTunes Library file on the shared hard drive?
    no need.

  • Party Shuffle with shared library

Is there anyway to use Party Shuffle on a remote computer with a shared library as the source? I have all my music on my G5 but my laptop is what I use during parties.

It's been that way ever since Party Shuffle appeared in iTunes.
One way I used to do it when I had my music library on a desktop computer and I was using a PowerBook was to use remote desktop software like VNC to control the remote computer.
Or if you quit out of iTunes on the remote computer and use file sharing to mount the remote file system you could hold the Option key down on your local computer and then select the library on the shared volume. I haven't tried this but I think it may work. Changing libraries was something introduced in the latest version of iTunes, although I don't think this was what they had in mind when introduced it.

  • Cover Flow view with shared library?

I use iTunes for Windows on my laptop and share my library from my iMac...is there a way to utilize cover flow view with a shared libary?

Since just moving all my music to a NAS I was here researching the same issue. I can see the other three (only when music is specifically selected) but not Cover Flow. I believe it has been disabled. I played around with grid view with 428 albums and iTunes for Windows loads the art fresh evertime you start it and, on the smallest art size in grid view, it took a bit of time to load all the art.
If Cover Flow needs to cache up all the art work in advance then I could see how it would easily take my setup between 45 seconds to a minute to cache them all up.
Perhaps that would feel too clunky for Apple especially if one were to aggressively swipe through a set that wasn't completely cached.

  • Design issue with sharing LV2 style global between run-time executables

    Hi,
Just when I though that I had everything figured out, I ran into this design issue.
The application that I wrote is pretty much a client-server application where the server publishes data and the client subscribes data using data sockets. Once the client gets all the data in the mainClient.vi program, I use LV2 style (using shift registers) to make the data global to all the other sub-vi’s. So the LV2 is in initialize mode in the mainClient.vi program and then in the sub-vi’s the LV2 is in read mode. Also, I had built the run time menu for each sub-vi that when an item is selected from the menu, I would use the get menu selection to get the item tag which will be the file nam
e of the sub-vi and open the selected sub-vi using vi server. This all worked great on my workstation where I have labVIEW 7.0 Express installed. But the final goal is to make exe’s for each of these sub-vi’s and install runtime on the PC’s that do not have labVIEW installed. Of course when I did that only the mainClient.exe program was getting the updated data from the server but the sub-vi’s were not getting the data from the mainClient.exe. I did realize that the reason for this is due to the fact that I had compiled all the sub-vi’s separately and so the LV2 vi is now local to each executable (i.e. all executables have their own memory location). Also, the run-time menu did not work because now I am trying to open an executable using vi server properties.
To summarize, is there a way to share LV2 style global's between executables without compiling all of the sub-vi’s at one time? I tried using data-sockets (local-host) instead of LV2 st
yle gloabls to communicate between the sub-vi’s but I ran into performance issues due to the large volume of data.
I would really appreciate it if anyone can suggest a solution/alternative to this problem.
    Thanks
    Nish

    >
If the LV2 global is loaded statically into your mainClient.vi, then any
other application can connect to the exe and get a reference to the VI
using the VI name. This gives you a VI reference you can use to call
    the VI. Ye
s, the values will be copied between applications. That is
why you need to add access operations to the global that returns just
the info needed. If you need the average, do that in the global. If
you need the array size, do that in the global. Returning the entire
array shouldn't be a common operation on the LV2 style global anyway.

Your app does need to watch both the amount of data being passed across
the network, and the amount being shared between the apps. You might
    want to consider puttin
g the VIs back into the main app. What is the
reason you are breaking them apart for?

  • Update number of reading with shared library

    Hey,
I use to listen my music present on my MacBook with my iPad using home-sharing.
But when I play a song on my iPad that did not increase the number of reading on my Macbook. I have turn on the option in itunes preferences to allow this but without any effect.
Does someone have an idea to solve this problem?
    Thanks everyone,

Well, I have to re-open this subject...
Indeed, since I have updated to Itunes 11.1.1 and iOS 7.0.2 my problems are back! When I am playing songs shared from my Mac itunes lbrary on my iPad, the number of reading is not changed on my Mac...
Anyone knows if Apple will fix this issue soon?
    Thanks,

the new scribus needs openssl 0.9.7 (also in the repos) --- but warning: if your system is not up-to-date and you update to 0.9.7, you will break a lot of pkgs

  • Sharing library between computer over a network

    Hi,
I'm trying to share 2 different ip libraries on 2 different computers. But one has ip4 and the other one has ip6. Do both iPhoto have to be of the same level (ip4 vs ip6) to be able to share?
Reason is that I see the icon of the other library on each iphoto, but on the ip6 on my laptop, (trying to access my G5 with ip4,) i see the icon of the G5 ip4 and as soon as I click on it, it disapear and I get a message that there was an error with sharing library.
On the other way around, when I try to access the ip6 laptop from the ip4 G5, I click on it and the icon remains in the album sections, and it get de-selected automatically, and it reverts to the root ip library being selected. The Macbook/laptop icon remains in the album column, but cannot remain selected. I get NO sharing error on this one.
Apple website and help menu claim that to share you only need 10.2.6 and iP4 and above!
    Please advise!

    Hi Brie,
I'm not sure exactly what are the 6 steps exactly.... but I did all the check box in ip preferences of both computer.
I found this in the iP help menu
To share your photos on a network:
    1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Share my photos" checkbox, and then choose your entire library or only the albums, slideshows, or books you want to share.
4-Type a name for your shared items in the "Shared name" field, and a password if desired.
The shared name you enter appears in the iPhoto Source list on computers set up to look for shared photos on your network. If you select "Require password," users will need to enter that password before they can see your shared photos.
DONE ( did not use password)
    To look for shared photos:
    1-Choose iPhoto > Preferences.
2-Click Sharing at the top of the Preferences window.
3-Select the "Look for shared photos" checkbox.
    DONE
Not sure what other step there are to do if any!

  • Aperture 3.4. not sharing library correctly

I have upgraded Aperture to 3.4.3 and Iphoto to 9.4.2. I used to do rough adjustments and albums with Iphoto, and then do the fine tuning with Aperture, but all of a sudden Aperture doesn't recognize latest imports and albums created in Iphoto.
It seems like the shared library it's "freezed" to some days ago, and since then iphoto and aperture work independtly on different libraries.
As far as I can tell I didn't change any setting, apaprt from upgrading as suggested.
    Thank you for any hint/advice

It seems like the shared library it's "freezed" to some days ago, and since then iphoto and aperture work independtly on different libraries.
Have you checked, what libraries Aperture and iPhoto are actually using? If Aperture and iPhoto are using different libraries, it may appear, as if images have been deleted. You can see the name of your current Aperture library at the top of the "Library" tab of the "inspector" panel.
And the current iPhoto Library will be highlighted and selected, when you use the command "File > Switch to Library" from iPhoto's main menu bar.
If you have imported into different libraries recently, then itis natural, that you do not see all images in both applications.
The first thing to do I'd recommend, is to make an inventory, which events and projects appear in which libraries, and to find out, if their actually are images missing from all libraries.

  • Shared Library issues after update yesterday

Yesterday, some systems updates came through and I went ahead and said yes. I didn't really look at what they were. Since then I have been trying to use Panrama, Thinking Home software and Graphic Converter. Every time I try to access these programs, I keep coming up with shared library errors. Mainly it says that they are carbon library errors. I used Time Capsule to go back a week, because I had used both of these programs last week. It didn't change anything. Thinking Home is the current version and Panorama is the previous edition.
Any ideas of how to fix this?

First, what OS are you using? "Carbon Library" makes me think of OS 9
Second, launch Software Update and the go to its Preferences and click on the "Installed Updates" tab to see what updates you installed.
Third, make sure that you have the latest versions of those programs that run with your OS. Your "current" version may not work with the latest OS update. Sometimes it is something in a Security Update that cause problems.

  • Compiling program VC++ (and ComponentWork++) in release's mode with static library ...

When i try to compil the program, there are conflicts between "nafxcw.lib" and an other library. The conflicts doesn't exist when i compil the program with shared library. Can you help me ?
my OS is Windows NT 4.0
    thanks

Which "other library" does nafxcw.lib conflict with? Nafxcw.lib is an mfc library and is not distributed with Componentworks++.
When you say the conflict does not exist when you use the shared library, are you talking about the selection in the Measurement Studio App Wizard where it asks how you want to access the mfc library? What exactly is the conflict that you get?
In general I would always select to use the mfc library as a shared dll, because it is a known issue to statically link the library into any arbitrary project, not just a Componentworks++ project.

  • Help with Sharing iPhoto 9.5.1 library between users on same computer

    Hi,
I have upgraded operating systems to Maverick on my macbookpro which also upgraded iphoto to 9.5.1.  Previously in IPhoto I could choose to share the library in each of three user accounts.  The third account was used only for gathering photos to make books, calendars etc.  There does not appear to be a way to do this now.  How do I share libraries on the same computer without creating a library on a separate device?
So frustrating....I was right in the middle of creating a book.
    Thanks for any help.

That particular feature has been discontinued with iPhoto 9.5.1.  However, you  can use iCloud to share photos via  Shared Photo Streams. Each user account will need their own iCloud account and each user can create Shared Photo Streams to be shared with the other accounts.  The photos in the SFSs can be downloaded by any account with access to the stream.
Anbother option would be to create a Dropbox account and when the 2 accouts come across photos to be used in a project they can export the original file to the Dropbox in the account so they can be downloaded into the 3rd account and imported into the project library.
If you have an external HD you could put the project library on it and access it from each of the other 2 accounts. Project photos could be added to that library directly by the other 2 accounts by exporting to the desktop and importing into the projects library with an easy library switch.  Or one can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy selected albums between libraries.

  • Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Have new iMac with iPhoto sharing turned on. When the shared library is clicked the library disappears or starts to load then disappears? What is wrong?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs repair.
Therefore  make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If you experience the same problem with the test library then try this basic fix a try:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
If that fails a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came on originally.
