IPhoto '09 in 10.6.4 - Serious Sync Issues

We're currently in the process of upgrading ~200 people from 10.5.8 MacBooks to 10.6.4 MacBook Pros by simply using HomeSync to create a portable home on the new MacBook Pros from their home folders on Snow Leopard Servers. We've seen all the usual annoying sync issues already and can generally remedy all of these problems, but upgrading the users from iPhoto '08 to '09 tends to be the absolute worst. the sync process reaches the iPhoto library and returns the error "you should contact your network adminsitrator." No matter what we do, it won't seem to sync correctly. Not to mention it is as slow as heck.
Console proves to be little use - the one thing I did notice is that HomeSync seems to think that the files are in use.
One last thing I noticed is that it did work one time, and it appears that it was after the Faces feature was complete in its initial run (after all faces had been detected).
Anyone else notice anything similar?

Not much hope. I subscribe to a mailing list that is very occasionally visited by an Apple engineer...here's a note about PHD's and iPhoto:
Gang,
Sorry for the late response....
The consensus was to use PHD's to sync only Documents and Desktop in most cases. It does not meet the "rapid return to service" criteria; but unless you deploy something like Code42's CrashPlan, you won't get there.
iPhoto is still broken - and we know it. Sorry.
iMovie projects should now save nicely with 10.6.4.
Still moving really slow.... but catching up.

  • Serious Sync issues between iTunes 8.0.2 and AppleTV 2.3

    Please Help,
Everything was just wonderful until several weeks back when the AppleTV started having sync issues that seem to have degraded into oblivion. Rebooted everything, checked all software loads, tried many of the suggestions (no blocking network / firewall issues) and have even tried adding redundant port allows for any and all ports I could find going in / out of Apple TV. But to no avail there seems to be a bug that got introduced somewhere with the sync mechanisms.
The Apple TV can purchase movies, download them fast to start playing, view youtube videos just fine and play all of the media great, So can my Mac and all media / iTunes functions work well it even syncs with my iPhone / iPods well.
However... The only way I can get the AppleTV to sync is to reboot it, then it will sync some, iTunes will just get to a forever syncing with Apple TV state (which you have to stop), reboot AppleTV again, it will sync some more, until it stops, iTunes is stuck syncing forever with AppleTV again, repeat and rinse about 4 more times and you have it all synced.
If there isn't anything to sync when AppleTV boots the Sync in iTunes just spins for ever. I actually left it for 4 days just to see if it was actually doing anything. Minimal Network IO and of course it never finished.
If I stop the Sync with Apple TV in iTunes and then try to reinitiate it from iTunes I get the 3986 port error (which is bogus) unless there is some hidden setting somewhere in the OS that I can't find. And if there was a problem then why would it start and run when I boot the Apple TV.
It just seems that all of a sudden things started going wrong with Sync with no real change other than 'software updates' .
The only thing I haven't tried is to do a factory reset on the AppleTV which from what I have read doesn't really solve anything.
So, please someone from Apple or someone with some detailed technical experience provide some guidance on whether there is a bug that got introduced, version issues between iTunes/AppleTV, or something else going that I haven't been able to figure out over the last 2 weeks.
The only other unique things that may be different is that I have my iTunes library on an external drive (not on the internal drive). Does this many any difference?
Thank You in advance to anyone that can help me get to the bottom of these issues. This started happening when I was totally sold on AppleTV and about to buy a second one.
    mmilford

And it's good to know I'm not the only one with the problem too! I just cannot sync stuff from Mac to Apple TV without it locking up. It actually seems to lock the wifi also, meaning I have to quit iTunes, turn off the wifi and then turn it back on again. But as soon as I open iTunes, the same problem again...
I've tried everything I can think of, searched all help articles, but cannot sort out this somewhat annoying problem.

  • Serious Syncing Issue - Accepted by other person

My boss (CEO of my company) missed a meeting this morning because it wasn't on her calendar. After some debugging this is what we find is happening. I need a solution to this asap.
    1. Person requests meeting with CEO.
    2. Her Phone gives an alert that there is an invitation but she ignores it because she's too busy for that. Her schedule is handled by her secretary.
    3. The Calendar item shows up in the calendar as tentative.
    4. In Outlook (2003) the secretary has access to the CEO's mailbox and calendar. Sees the calendar invitation and accepts it on her behalf.
    5. Immediately, the iphone shows the syncing spinning thing at the top and the calendar item DISAPPEARS.
The only way to get it to sync back with the calendar on the iphone again is to open the original calendar item and accept it again.
What is going on? Can this be fixed? Have others had this problem (It's a difficult one to search on in the forums.)

We're having a similar problem here with several users, but instead of delting the calendar items are reverting back to tentative within a few seconds. It does this regardless how many times it is accepted from the users Outlook calendar.

  • Cannot sync iphoto folders after upgrading to mavericks.  syncing caused removal of all photo folders from iPhone

After upgrading 17" macbook pro/late 2009 to mavericks - runs slow and having syncing issues.  syncs freeze then quit.  folders were removed from devices without my setting that up.  will not add.  all devices are NOT on OS7.  Is this why??

You and me both! I thought my error (Unknown error (-50) popped up when I thought I'd try out MobileMe, (which, as an aside screwed a LOT of things up). Now I have no idea. I started getting duplicate bookmarks in Safari, and email from all over, and then my photos will no longer sync from iPhoto. I've never had this problem, had my MacBook Pro for three years, my iMac almost a year, iPhone for 2+. APPLE!!! ARE YOU LISTENING??????

  • I have problems syncing my new iPhone 5 to iTunes. I read somewhere to disable iPhotos and that has allowed me to sync but my photos are not on my iPhone. How can I fix this?

I have problems syncing my new iPhone 5 to iTunes. I read somewhere to disable iPhotos and that has allowed me to sync but my photos are not on my iPhone. How can I fix this?

Try updating to iPhoto 9.4.1. If it's not appearing in your Software Update yet, try updating using a .dmg installer downloaded from the following page on the Apple website:
    iPhoto 9.4.1
From the release notes for the new version:
    What's New in Version 9.4.1
Improves the reliability of syncing to iOS devices via iTunes
Fixes an issue that could cause iPhoto to quit unexpectedly when using the Export command
Addresses an issue that could cause iPhoto to quit unexpectedly when upgrading multiple books, cards, and calendars
Resolves an issue with downloading and viewing photos synced from Facebook albums

  • IPhoto 9.4.1 does not solve all sync issues

The 9.4.1 update does not solve all the sync issues.
It may have fixed the duplicate Events that you can see in iTunes when syncing to an iDevice, but it has not resolved the duplicate Faces.
I still have many duplicate Faces showing, even though in iPhoto the Faces are only there once.......

    Try the following:
1 - open the library package with the Finder as follows:
2  - Find the AlbumData.xml file and move it to the Desktop.
3 - close the package and launch iPhoto.
See if the above will get rid of the bogus events.

  • IPhoto 9 Facebook sync issues

    Hi,
I was playing about in iPhoto when it started to automatically sync to my online Facebook albums. I hadn't made any changes in them, so there was no need for this to happen.
Once it started syncing I was unable to quit iPhoto until it had finished, but the process never completed despite being left over night. I was able to force quit the application, but that doesn't really resolve the issue as iPhoto wasn't really usable while the sync was being performed (probably a performance issue on my mac).
Anyone had this / have any ideas? It's version 9.1.3

Had the same thing happen again. A Work around seems to be to delete your Facebook account from iPhotos accounts list. You wont be able to upload directly to FB as a result, but in my case as soon as the never ending sync started iPhoto became practically unusable anyway, so it's not much of a loss.
You might need to stop airport initially to allow you to delete the FB account, as you can't do that while it's syncing either.

  • After all the updates (itunes 10.6, iphone 5.1, and iphoto) all my photos are suddenly being synced with my iPhone.

After all the updates (itunes 10.6, iphone 5.1, and iphoto) all my photos are suddenly being synced with my iphone. Before I was able to pick the "last 12 months" or last import, or certain album. Now everything is greyed out?

After deleting files, there does not seem much improvement on the disk space.
    Felicia,
Download Omni Disk Sweeper: it is free now and will list your files and folders sorted by size.
But don't get carried away and sweep and delete anything that you do not know what is is required for:
    http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omnidisksweeper/download/
I recovered from time machines's backup harddisk
Time Machine may be using the disk space - if you have Time Machine enabled and not the backup drive connected, TM will make local snapshots, if you have free disk space. See Pondini's webpage for more information: Time Machine - Questions 30. What are Local Snapshots?
I disable these local snapshots on my portable macs, to be sure, how much space really is free.

  • Lumia 820 Music Sync issue.

I installed 16GB micro SDHC card into my Lumia 820 and set as default for music and pictures. I try to sync music between my mac and phone. But the end of the sync, error message comes up which says all the music can't be copied. When I check the storage section on my phone. Music and video shows 0 and  seems like all the music is in "Other" section. Couldn't see anything under "Music". Tried Google and can't find any solution. Please anybody can help me. Thanks a lot.

I have also experienced the same issue and wasted about 4 hours of my life yesterday attempting to deal with it.
Music syncing to SD is horribly broken on the 820, on both 1232.2109.1242.1001 (original) and 1232.5951.1249.1003 (portico) firmwares.
I have ended up in a state where I have had to factory reset to fix the mess on 2 occasions now, on both original and portico firmware. This issue is definitely not fixed in portico.
For some obscure reason, particularly when using the desktop sync app, if it fails and tries again the music app gets very confused and displays an array of duplicates. If you perform an SD card format whilst in this state, the music app still 'thinks' that some of the music is still there and displays it as such. The only way to fix this erroneous display is to factory reset, which is far from ideal.
A workaround to the duplicate issue is to *not* use the desktop Windows Phone app, which seems to be horribly broken.
The Metro app often says that it 'Cannot copy the file to your phone' but it actually has without any issues, go figure.
I also noticed that some SD cards simply don't work properly in the 820.
I firstly tried a brand new Samsung 32GB which intermittently stopped working when syncing, dragging and dropping, and downloading on the phone causing the store to refuse to open necessitating a reboot.
I'm currently using a Transcend 8GB which does not exhibit that problem.
I tested the Samsung on my PC and it works fine, but I returned it to Amazon as faulty and exchanged it with a Sandisk 32GB, so I'll see what happens with that when it arrives I guess.
I don't know if this is a Nokia issue or a Microsoft issue. But someone needs to step up and fix this, because a 'switcher' from another platform will return the device immediately.
I've been a Windows Phone user for some time (Omnia 7, Lumia 800, then 820), but seriously, this issue was really making me consider my choice of platform.
Music syncing to SD *needs* to work and it needs to work reliably.

  • SERIOUS lag issues with Intel iMac

    Hello everyone,
I'm pretty frustrated right now. I've been having this serious lag issue with my new iMac for the past few days. I think it may have started after I ran the last security update.
    What happens:
When switching between apps, the system will hang for 1-3 seconds between doing anything. This includes typing, mouse requests, etc. It's VERY frustrating. I have activity monitor open currently, and I am seeing both Safari and SystemUIServer hogging up the CPU resources like CRAZY. I've even seen Safari recently give a CPU usage of 120%, right before I loaded this webpage. tis isn't just centralized to Safari too.... I have the following apps running:
    Adium 0.89.1
    FoireFox 1.5.0.8
    Safari
    Activity Monitor
    My Memory stats currently are:
    175MB Wired
    708MB Active
    618MB Inactive
    1.47GB Used
There should be no reason I'm getting these lags with just two web browsers and a chat client open.
Has anyone else expierenced the lags?? Any suggestions? I'm almost ready to reinstall OS X and not run the last security update. Thanks

    Hello Matthew
Are you running any maintenance scripts on a regular basis?
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/maintscripts.html
I would manually run this script from The X Lab, and my load times would improve greatly. The problem was, I would forget to run them untill I noticed web pages loading slow or iTunes and iPhoto taking for ever. It wasn't untill someone here in discussions suggested Anacron that I saw the light. WOW what a difference Anacron has been making in my overall system speed. My iMac has not been shutdown for 11days 5hrs 34mins (sleep or use only) and opening new App's, switching App's and web pages load as fast or faster than after a fresh start up. If your system is operating properly and you are having only what seems to be a slow or sluggish issue Anacron will make a difference.

  • Premiere CS5 h264 sync issue

I'm having SERIOUS  sync problems when exporting a film to a h264 format. (Before i used primarely Flash and Windows media and haven´t had any problems). The sync issue can be seen in Quick time player, on Macs and on some online video platforms that I use.
The sync issue occurs more in some films and  less in some films that I'm producing. I have tried to isolate the problem, effects used , audio format etc etc. , but i haven't found  any effects or anything that causes the problem. I'm out of sync by 6-12 frames.
This is a major problem as my clients prefer h264 and h264 has superior quality to other formats. (Quality as a function of file size).
    To solve this with a temp. fix i do the following;
I export the finished film to a MPEG 2 format (about 300Meg for a 3 minute film). And convert the film to mp4 using a 3rd party converter. By doing this i lose som quality but the film i in-sync. This is a short term solution and i have to switch to another editing software unless this is fixed on the CS6. Adobe just refers to forums and can't/won't be at any help on this.
Anyone out there that has experienced the same problems?
I have premiere on 4 different pcs in different confíguration , with or without gtx470 graphicts, on laptop etc etc. , so, please don't ask me  "What is you system configuration...etc" . This is NOT a system related issue.
    rgds msx

The QuickTime player often has this issue.  It is best not used at all.  Instead, try the free and excellent VLC player.
Having said that, there are free encoders out there (MeGUI, Handbrake, Xvid4PSP, etc.) which use the x264 encoder, which many find superior to others like the MainConcept encoder Adobe uses.  But your best bet here is to export out a lossless intermediate rather than a highly compressed MPEG.  The UT codec is free, lossless, plays nice with Adobe software, and since version 11, is now both read and write capable on Macs.

  • "Send to" problem and sync issues.

    Hi,
When exporting my FCP sequence to Soundtrack Pro using Send To, it arrives in STP with a bunch of audio files missing. Weird thing is I can see them in the little preview/position window, so STP knows they should be there, but they're nowhere to be seen in my timeline.
As an experiment, I exported as OMF and, on import to STP, the files are there, however when I export a finished mix to FCP there's a serious sync drift (like 2 secs over 5 minutes).
I've checked my project prefs and STP is set to 25fps (as is my FCP project). However when I open the timecode HUD, it's counting at 24fps. Is there somewhere else in STP that I should be setting my frame rate?
    Thanks in advance.
    Any help greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The missing audio files were DVCPro HD, as is the majority of the project. I selected the timeline and used "Send to" in the file menu.
By far the most pressing issue is the sync problem. How on earth can it lose sync like this? I've done my audio mix (30 min project) and I have a project to deliver today. Can you shed any light on what I'm doing wrong? Is it a known bug?
    Thanks again.

  • Serious resolution issues with After Effects CC (2014) on Windows 8.1 Pro on Dell Precision M3800 laptop??

My new company installed Adobe Creative Cloud (There was some annoying Proxy issues at first, because of the seriously tight I.T policies) but we are having some serious resolution issues with After Effects CC 2014 (also have this resolution problem with Adobe Premiere, Media Encoder, Muse) on Windows 8.1 Pro on a Dell Precision M3800 laptop with icons and interface looking too small and hard to see, is there a fix, an update or a work around, can anyone help?
    Any help will be appreciated!
    k.regards
    Ramon

Hi Todd is there a time-frame for this fix, there is a lot of pressure on me, because I convinced my company to get the Creative Cloud and quite a lot of the CC software is not compatible with the latest Windows 8.1 OS.
Is there at least a work around, until this big fix comes along?

  • More Aperture/iPad syncing issues

Each time I create a new project or album in Aperture, I have trouble getting the images to the iPad when I sync. I sometimes need to sync several times until the images are recognized and imported to iPad. I do have the albums designated manually, rather than all, which means I have to sync and then sync again after I check the checkbox for the new album. I understand that, but sometimes I have to go back into Aperture to make sure the previews are updated. If I choose to update the previews for a project, Aperture will usually tell me that they're already up to date, but often they will not show up on the iPad, even after I check the appropriate box for the album in iTunes. Sometimes I get good results if I delete the previews and regenerate them in Aperture.
The second problem is the sort order. Even if I have "sort by filename" selected in Aperture, they do not show up in this order on the iPad--despite what the support article says about this. They appear to only show up in Date order. I've tried repeatedly resetting the sort order, but it does not change on the iPad. Sometimes I have to delete the album from the iPad, (uncheck the album in iTunes and sync again), then recheck it and sync yet another time. This does not always work, however.
It is very frustrating. The interface between Aperture and the iPad is very wonky. I often have to sync repeatedly, just to get the photos on the iPad and even then they're usually in the wrong order.
Aperture appears to have two types of previews: "previews" and "sharing previews," but "sharing previews" don't seem to appear in the documentation. I've noticed that, even when Aperture says the previews are up to date, when I exit the program, it will sometimes (but, maddeningly, not always), give the message, "updating sharing previews" before quitting. I cannot figure out how to force this, however. Sometimes opening and closing Aperture several times will cause it to do this, but I can't be sure.
iTunes seems to have its own process in which it "optimizes" images for importing to the iPad. Like Aperture's mysterious "sharing previews," "optimizing" does not show up in the iTunes documentation or help files.
This process either needs to be improved, or at least documented so users can understand how to avoid these problems.

    1. Some people have reported slow syncing with anything but the iPad's own USB cable (e.g. using a US cable from an iPhone/iPod). Try different cables
    2. More work - disable iTunes syncing completely, then re-enable a bit at a time, e.g. one movie at a time, one playlist at a time, one photo album at a time. There are periodic reports of syncing issues caused by a bit of media that's been corrupted, and this (tedious) approach allows you to identify where the problem might be.
    3. If that fails, do a clean restore back to factory settings, then progressively re-enable syncing as above.
    Hope this helps
