IPhoto 09 is bag full of "not good"

I'll admit that I don't use iPhoto a lot but I finally had some time and I thought I would the Face recognition. I opened iPhoto 09 and it said it needed convert my library, OK. BUt from there on nothing happened. Even when I tried to Quit iPhoto09 it said it was still converted or updating the photos. I let it run overnight and the same result. Force Quit. So I swapped out my iPhoto Library with one from 6 months ago, deleted the prefs and tried again same result. So I went back to last years iPhoto and that iPhoto Library. It opened right up. So try again with the library I just had open in iPhoto 7 with iPhoto 8. Same problem. So I just removed the Library and made iPhoto make a new one but when I went to import photos same result and had to force quit. It seems like something is wrong in iPhoto09. Can I just remove all remnants of iPhoto 09 and reinstall from a DVD. I should then be able to swap in an old Library and get that to work.

The fact that iPhoto Library Manager hung as well suggests that there is an issue within that Library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 09* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
I don't think the icon in the dock is of any relevance

One thing that seems to help some is turning hardware

  • IPhoto is pointing to thumbnails, not full pix

I had to rebuild a library a year or so ago, with the assistance of Apple help, which is where I suspect this problem started ... in any case:
I just realized that a minority of the 6,000-plus pictures in iPhoto were fuzzy and had strangely low file sizes: 19K, for example. (Many others are crisp and in the multiple-MB size.) I looked into the Photos file and it appears that, at least in the cases I checked (hopefully all!), there is a full-sized photo and also a thumbnail. For some reason iPhoto is pointing to the thumbnail, which I assume means that is the version that would be printed, emailed, and so on.
How can I "point" iPhoto to the full-sized photo and not the thumbnail?

Okay, here are the further steps I've taken. I did venture into the Pictures folder--frowned on, I know--to see if larger originals existed of the 19kb-size photos in iPhoto.
I found that by previewing those photos, you could see if the photos had been imported into iPhoto; if they hadn't, you could click a box and important them. Many of my high-res photos were not imported, for whatever reason, so I did so, one by one. Tedious but hopefully productive. I did not touch anything else in that folder.
But I do also seem to have a two-libraries-file problem. (This may be the result of the Apple Care call I mentioned earlier, in which someone walked me through reconstructing a corrupted library by creating a new one.)
I have a libraries file called Newlibrary, and another called iPhotoLibrary6. Both have been updated in the last day.
Is the recommended next step to merge these, using iPhoto Library Manager?

Once something similar happened to me. The external drives I had set up for FCP to use for some reason were not mounted, and FCP put all its render files on the main drive and I couldn't find them anywhere.
Go to applications, and control-click (and hold down) on your FCP icon; you should get a pop up menu that says "show package contents". Select that, select the "contents" folder, then the "mac OS" folder. See if your quicktime file is in there, or if you've got render files in the "render" folder or audio render files in the "audio render" folder that don't belong there.
That's where FCP sticks stuff when your documents FCP project folders are not available or when external drives you've selected aren't available.

  • Iphoto disk is full.......and other issues

    good morning,
tried to load some new pics into iphoto today and i get the following probs:
icon bounces but no iphoto screen on desktop.
message states - your iphoto is almost full (i have 188g free on system - so confused).
then message - repair permissions ( i dont know how to or where to)
    any help?
    thanks

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.
    If that fails:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto file too full to accept new photos

the system is a mac book pro 2009 running 10.6.5 and iphoto '09. iPhoto has run into a file limit. there are about 35,000 items in the iPhoto file. the internal hd of the mac book pro is also full. -- 7 GB available.
i photo file is on a 250 GB external (OWC) with a 240GB partition for iPhoto and 10GB partition for misc. a check of "get info" shows the iPhoto 240GB partition full.
a complication, prior to getting a space available reading, 400 new photos (about 1.5 to 3 MB each) were downloaded and attempted to be placed in the already full iPhoto '09 file. now, when iPhoto is opened, the spinning busy ball is the only indicator - no other iPhoto actions are available. the machine was left on overnight, and iPhoto still shows the spinning busy ball.
the 400 photos are sill saved on a SD card and could be trashed if necessary to get out of this fix. but i do not know how to do that.
a new OWC 1TB external HD is ordered and on the way, but it is not clear how to proceed to save the existing iPhoto library and then transfer it to the new 1 TB hard drive.
i did some looking online and found Pogue's iPhoto'09 missing manual, chapter 13, file management. but it does not seem to cover what i need to do here. i am aware that iPhoto is very fussy about how its files are addressed and one can easily destroy them by an untutored action. here is the link to pogue's instructions (scroll to p. 309)
    http://books.google.com/books?id=LG43X_8DtgC&pg=PA309&lpg=PA309&dq=iphotofile+too+full+to+accept+newphotos&source=bl&ots=0dRCENUcL6&sig=5E-8SE5WjV5r3D2w4MMwmNmc9vk&hl=en&ei=1p8aTe7 AIML38AajhIzXDQ&sa=X&oi=bookresult&ct=result&resnum=3&sqi=2&ved=0CCsQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q&f=false
so in summary- how can i accomplish the following:
    - stop the spinning ball associated with trying to load 4,000 new photos in the already full iPhoto file?
    - set up a new iphoto file on a generous partition of the new 1 TB ext hard drive?
    - move the iPhoto items from the old 250 Gb hard drive safely to the new 1 Tb?
    - establish the new 1TB hard drive as the only iphoto file for this system?
i have probably left out something important as well.
thanks for your help - j

First off: the problem isn't that iPhoto is full. iPhoto is good for 250,000 images. The problem is the volume (or partition) that the Library is on is full. Attempting to add the extra photos means that iPhoto was unable to write to the database file, which has been damaged.
So, you need to move the Library to a bigger disk. You can do this by drag and drop.
    Then Option 1

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • Iphoto 9.4.3 does not open after security update. osx 10.7.5 Lion is running

Last used iphoto  a month ago to upload photos. Today attempted to upload daughter's gymnastic photos and iphoto 9.4.3 will not open. Stops at dialog that says it must be updated to open my library. But I run Lion not Maverick. The new iphoto only runs on Maverick. Only system change I can think of since end january is the security update I did a few days ago. I've checked the iphoto library and it seems intact with 43 gigs of photo etc stored over last 10 years.
MacApp says new update available 9.5, but it doesn't work with my Lion. I don't want to change anything right now.
    Computer is MacPro G5 2009.

    OK - good luck
Generally it is better to resolve problems and then upgrade since generally problems have nothing to do with the Application but are data problems which can be made more difficult to resolve by upgrading the software while the problem still exists

  • Photos have been found in the iPhoto Library folder that were not imported

Whenever I start iPhoto, I get an error that says:
5 Photos have been found in the iPhoto Library folder that were not imported. Would you like to import them now?
    http://www.fredmccann.com/error.png
If I say no, the dialog goes away but you get it the next time you start iphoto. If I say yes, then iphoto tries to import something (I don't know what) and hangs. I've let it run for two hours and nothing ever gets imported. What's worse is that every time I try to let it import, it increments the number of pictures it thinks is missing. The first time it said 3 photos. I let it attempt an import and it froze. The next start it claimed there were 4. It's up to 5 now and I've figured out that letting it try to import whatever it thinks is missing is a bad idea.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Any suggestions?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    booleanman:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. This Apple KB document may have the solution to your problem: Unimported photos found in Library when iPhoto is launched.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • I burned my first iDVD andpicture quality is not good.  Originals are excellent.  My photos are shot in raw or jpeg, both are not sharp when I view my DVD.  I viewed it on my 1080 dpi tv and my new apple computer.

I burned my first iDVD andpicture quality is not good.  Originals are excellent.  My photos are shot in raw or jpeg, both are not sharp when I view my DVD.  I viewed it on my 1080 dpi tv and my new apple computer.

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • Not good support of Adobe!!

I recently asked Adobe to suggest a way to me in order to purchase Adobe Dynamic Link separately and with the whole package of Premium Suite.
There are thousands of clients that bought Adobe Premier because that's what they needed at the the time they bought it and after, let's say six months, they decided to start working with After Effects, so they purchased After Effects too. They might already had Photoshop. So thes clients (like me)own Photoshop, Premier, After Effects and many other Adobe products like Media Encoder, Adobe Encore e.t.c., but they don't own Dynamic Link because they didn't purchased the Premium Package. For examble I have everything except from Soundbooth and Dynamik Link. I will purchase Soundbooth but I cannot buy Dynamic Link because it is given only if you buy the Premium Package. So I have to pay again for buying all the products which I already own and have paid for them. They cannot give it away by itself. That is not good and it is very bad support fot those thousands of clients that purchased the products one at the time.
    Here is their response.......

    I see......
You are telling me (I am referring to the company and not you personally of course) to purchase the Adobe suite Premium package, alt
hough I have already purchased all the programs it contains except from Dynamic Link and Soundbouth. That is to pay twice for produc
ts I have already bought from your site. That's not a very good proposition.
Thanks anyway. Maybe I made a mistake choosing Adobe products.
The problem is I cannot return the softwares in order to get the premium package.
I am a client who has purchased a lot of products from Adobe, so try to find a way so I can have Dynamic Link. Otherwise I will have
to report this to the Internet, because I am sure that there are many clients that bought one product first and after sometime an o
ther, without buying the whole package from the beginning. So, if you would like to offer good service, you have to find a solution
    for these clients too.

Yes, that was an upgrade path to me. Now, this IS a "one-way street," but with individual, qualifying licenses, there are several "suite" (that could also be listed as "sweet," but that is MHO) upgrades available. With most (perhaps all? Will be listed in the specs., so check) of these suites, one will get ADL, probably Soundbooth, Encore and On-Location, plus other products. This will differ by suite.
Now, it does mean that one ends up with a few programs, that might already be in the stable, but the very latest versions. I cannot recall the exact price to upgrade, using my AI stand-alone license, but it seems that the full CS2 Production Studio suite cost me about US$1400. In that, I got PrPro, Encore and AfterEffects, which I did not already have, plus upgrades for PS and AI. I did the math on what it would have cost me to upgrade all my individual Adobe programs, and it worked out to AfterEffects being free. Not a bad deal by my calculations.
Now that I HAVE done that upgrade to the suite, I cannot go back and upgrade just individual products. That came as a surprise to me, but I'm sure that it's spelled out in the fine-print, you know that 1pt. type, that no one reads carefully?
Good luck, and I hope that one of the suites will work for you perfectly. If you are thinking of upgrading any individual products, please check out the suites carefully, as you will likely save $, or at least get something new in the bargain.

I have downloaded every update and my battery life is better than any previous iPhone I have ever owned. I see posts from hundreds of people every day, and this is not a commonly reported problem. While there are a few random reports of battery problems, it is no more than I have seen for any other model or any other version of iOS in almost 8 years. Usually problems of rapid battery drain can be traced to bad apps (FaceBook is the worst offender) or corrupt data being synced from iCloud or other sources (gmail, Windows Live, Yahoo, etc).
The simple test is to restore the phone as New. Do not create any email accounts. Do not install any apps. Do not enable FaceTime or iMessage. Do not enable Twitter or any other social networking app. Use it for a day and check the battery usage. You will find that it is working well.
