IPhoto 09 library transfered, now errors

I transferred my account from a Leopard G5 to a MacBook Pro with the same OS. Most of my data came through perfect, but iPhoto is giving me trouble. I can sometimes view photos that were there, sometimes I can add new photos. Occasionally, it will just hang when importing.
Almost every time I run iPhoto, I have to force quit the app. I get an error when I try to quit normally; "Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for import to complete."
Does anyone have any ideas or thoughts? Has anyone had a similar issue?

I've also had some issues with other apps on my Mac. iPhoto seems to launch, but I just see an empty window:
Here's a couple of odd Console entries:

I recently rebuilt my iphoto 09 library and now all the pics are in one folder instead of events.  How do I get 20,000 pics back into the correct events?
I have a macbook pro Version 8.1.2 and I am using Iphoto 09
I rebuilt library because many pics were black and now they are in one folder labeled "Recovered"

Do you have the original iPhoto Library (before you rebuilt it)?
If so, I suggest you rebuild it using iPhoto Library Manager, a program you can download. It does a better job of rebuilding. It also leaves your original intact and makes the rebuilt Library a new file (package).
If you don't have the original (say, from a backup), then you should probably first back up the library that you have before trying anything.
After making a backup of it, look along the left side, you will see Events and Photos. Is there anything in either of those areas?
If not, it sounds like all your photos were recovered and put in Recovered during the rebuild. iPhoto Library Manager might do a better job with this. In any case, if there are no photos in Events or in Photos, try selecting ~ 5 photos in Recovered and drag them to Photos. Do they then show up there with the correct dates? Do they also show up in Events after doing that? I am suggesting just a few photos before you try it with 20,000.
If the photos inside your "recovered" area are also in Photos, then don't do the above steps. I'm not sure I can help you if your 20,000 photos are in Photos but not Events. I'd try iPhoto Library Manager instead with its better rebuild.
If the 5 photos experiment works, then I would try it with ~ 200 photos at a time, going through your entire collection. You'll need to do this about 10 times if you really have 20,000 photos. Remember, don't do this if the "recovered" photos are already in "Photos."

  • Any idea how to open a iPhoto 11 library transferred from Snow Leopard to Lion when no iPhoto update available for Lion...?

I am having problem transferring a iPhoto 11 library (v. 9.2.3) taken from my old iMac Snow Leopard to my new MBP runnning Lion (iPhoto 11 version is 9.1.5 and no upgrade seems to be available). A bit crazy, isn't it ?

The version of the OS simply is of no consequence in this. All that matters is the version of iPhoto.
iPhoto 11 v9.2.1 includes the necessary changes to the Library for Photostreaming.
iPhoto 11 (v9.1.5) does not include this, and so cannot open the v9.2.1 library.
You need to update the v9.1.5 version, and yes there are updates available.
How old is your Mac? If it's very recent you need to update via the App Store
If you purchased at the App Store you need to update via the App Store
Otherwise you update via Softare Update
If you have moved iPhoto from the default location (i.e. into a Folder) then the updater won't find it. Move it back.
If you have renamed iPhoto, the updater won't find it. Change it back.

  • IPhoto upgraded Library but now won't recognize photos (they're still there but in "Old" folders)

After I started up iPhoto this week, it gave me the "your library needs to be upgraded" message.  I let it do that, then it said it needed to update thumbnails and I let it do that.  Then it opened my library but there are no photos - I get the standard startup message as if this was my first time opening iPhoto.
My library file still shows a size of almost 300GB, and I can go through the package contents to find my photos, but they won't show up in the application.  After the upgrade, they're now listed in folders named "Old Masters", "Old Thumbnails", etc., and there are replacement folders in their place (named the same but without the "Old" in the title).  These new folders are empty.
It seems like I should just be able to delete "old" from the original folders' names and let them take the place of the new versions, but I don't want to do anything that will cause even more problems!  Any thoughts?
FYI: I'm on a new late 2014 Mac Mini (3 GHz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB memory) running Yosemite 10.10.2.  My iPhoto library is stored on an external hard drive which is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - it's the same drive I've used for a long time.
    Thanks for your help!

This has been affecting some folks for the past while. Having the Library on an external seems to be part of the issue.
Have a read of this thread
Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6 upgrade, large photo library is not recognised.
there's a post by Zaxe on the second page that has a fix. Worth a try.

Hi, I've just downloaded Aperture 3.2 and transfered all my iPhoto Library but now when I use the Aperture program it runs at the slowest speed possible and is almost impossible to work with. It is constantly processing why is this?

You can click on the text that says 'processing' in the main windows and it will open (toggle) the Activity Window, (can also be accessed via the Window menu -> Show Activity.
It will tell you what Aperture is doing with more precision and perhaps even how many photos it still needs to process. It is generally best to wait until all that processing is done before you start working with the photos (well it is best to first turn of options what you dont want to use, perhaps Faces or Previews and then let it process the new photos).

  • TS4213 Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?

Why can't iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iTunes Library files and Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie access my iPhoto Library files now that I upgraded to '11?
Examples of what is going on:
    1. In Pages, Numbers & Keynote, when I go to the media browser the Audio section reads "Open iTunes to populate this list" even after iTunes has been opened, .xml file has been replaced/repaired, etc  AND Photo section reads "Open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list" even after iPhoto Library has been replaced and new default library created.
    2. In iMovie, similar thing ... when I go to add photos or music to a movie the iTunes files aren't present and the iPhoto photos are missing with similar messages as in #1.
    3. In iPhoto, similar thing ... when I go to add music to a slideshow it says to "Open iTunes to populate this list".
It is shocking to me that Apple would let something as simple as a pathway link to associated library files get this messed up on an upgrade, but what's even more surprising is that with the number of people who seem to be having this particular issue (and I can tell from all the research that I've done for weeks online that there are a lot of them) that there doesn't seem to be a single clear answer to fixing it anywhere on these community support forums.  Most of what I've seen is rehashed advice from outdated issues.  What I need is a simple answer to how do we get these programs to look for the correct location of the photo and music files because I sure can't seem to find any logical place to do that through the programs' preferences files or the system preferences window?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    P.S. Here's the details on the software/hardware:
    MacBook Pro
    Mac OS X
    Version 10.7.5
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    iTunes 11.0.4 (4)
    iPhoto '11 9.4.3 (720.91)
    iMovie '11 9.0.9 (1795)
    Keynote '09 5.3 (1170)
    Pages '09 4.3 (1048)
    Numbers '09 2.3 (554)

I have the same problem on a new MacBook Pro. I have not been able to access the iTunes library from iPhoto since I got this computer. I looked in the Preferences file and deleted the com.apple.iApps.plist but there was no com.apple.iApps.lockfile so I just deleted the iAPPs.plist and rebooted the computer.  Still no iTunes available in iPhoto.
All my music is in iTunes and plays. After reading the above I brought up Pages and I was able to access music and insert a track into a document.
    Do you have any suggestions.

  • I just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library

i just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library

Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External?

  • I set up iPhoto v9.6 to copy items to library. Now I would like to change it to not copy. Do I have to start completely over? I have 106GB of photos and tags in my library. Will I lose all that work?

I set up iPhoto v9.6 to copy items to library. Now I would like to change it to not copy. Do I have to start completely over? I have 106GB of photos and tags in my library. Will I lose all that work? Originally I thought by copying items to library I would be making an exact copy of my originals and that would serve as a duplicate or backup copy. My originals are on my EHD#1 and my iPhoto library is on my EHD#2. But now I realize that I can not view my iPhoto library unless my EHD#2 is connected to my computer (duh!!) So now I would like to NOT copy times to library and I want to have the library in the Pictures folder on my laptop HD. So I guess my question is do I have to start completely over? Is there some way to salvage all the work I've done so far?

Yes you would have to start over from scratch.
But you should really think this through very carefully. Experienced users do not recommend iPhoto used in this mode, and with very good reasons. Among them
    1. It's more work for exactly no gain
    2. It's unreliable - especially - when the library is on one volume and the photos are on another. One change to the path between the files and the library and you'll be reconnecting every photo in the Library back to the database, one by one.

  • Backup iphoto 09 library error

    Arrrggghhhhh, please help me.
I am trying to move my iphoto 09 library to my 2 TB Time Capsule. The library size is showing as 96GB and my poor imac hd (intel) is only 320GB so is being dominated by images and movies (approx 16000).  I thought I could put the library on the time capsule and keep the hd for music and documents. My question is two fold:
-Why when I am copying and pasting this library as a whole to the Time Capsule would it be aborting after about 8 hrs saying error -36? (Iphoto is closed and energy saving options are off)
-Is there a way for me to reduce the size of the library and rebuild to just include the photos that I can physically see in iPhoto? (any originals are long forgotten about.) That way I can use the time Capsule as a back up rather than a single storage place.
    Many thanks

    1. This is not a suitable location for the Library and not an intended use for the Time Capsule. If you want to move the Library off your internal HD buy a Firewire or USB disk, format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use that.
2 A -36 error means that the process has hit a file that cannot be read or written - locked or damaged in other words. Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.
    3. The only part of an iPhoto Library that can be removed safely is the iPod Photo Cache, but that's pointless as it will be recreated the next time you sync with an iPad/iPod/iPhone. Other than that Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

I purchased a new imac (4G, OS X 10.6.8) in Feb 2011 and thought my old iPhoto library transferred over. It wasn't. And I can't get iPhoto to open on my old mac. It says, "can't open your current version of iPhoto using this version of iPhoto. You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto". I don't think my old mac will support the newer version of iPhoto so I feel like I'm stuck (this is why I got a new mac -- cheaper than upgrading all my software, etc). Help! I really need to get to my old photos, and no, they are not backed up anywhere. Thanks.

    You have two options:
Run the Library on a machine that has the same version as the machine that was stolen.
    or
Recover the files from this library and start over from scratch.
    To recover the files:
Go to your Pictures Folder (or whereever you have the back up) and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Your originals are in the Masters folder.
Note this will only recover your photos as imported from you camera.

  • Transfering iPhoto '08 library to new mac iPhoto '11

I have a new iMac OS Lion with iPhoto '11. I wanted to migrate my huge (67,000 photos) iPhoto '08 library from my older Snow Leopard iMac. I've got them hooked up via ethernet.
Since it looked like the newer iPhoto had some different little files inside the "iPhoto Library" compared to the older version, I showed contents on both and transfered the older files/folders into the new virgin library, so as to keep the fresh empty files untouched, just in case there were new prefs etc.
But when I open the new iPhoto it still seems to think its empty.
Should I have just copied the entire old iPhoto library over and replaced the new one?  Or is there a special command to tell the new iPhoto to start whatever conversion process etc?
    Thanks.
ps: I didn't use the migration assistant since I didn't want any legacy crap from the past three mac to move over, so that is why I am manually moving music, docs, etc over.

Should I have just copied the entire old iPhoto library over and replaced the new one?
    yes
NEVER make any changes of any sort to the contents of the iPhoto library - it is a SQL database you there are no user servicable parts within it
Migration assistance does not handle the iPhoto library well sometimes - the best way is to drag the existing iphoto library from the pictures folder on the new system to the desktop if you have any photos you want in it, connect the two systems together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old system to the pictures folder of the new system and launch iPhoto on the new system - it will open and convert the iPhoto library as necessary and you will be fine - once you test the iPhoto library you can delete the one on the desktop

  • Help my image library is now showing errors

I have Lightroom 5 and have just upgrade with the latest updates. Now all the unkeyworded images have an error notice on them. How do I restore them to were there were yesterday? it looks like they are now only thumbnails as they are very pixelated. There is now image metadata showing at the side of the image either.
    Any suggestions please?

    Hi Keith,
if I view the library in the grid there is an ! mark next to every photo that I haven't given keywords to yet but if i view them in the Loupe window it has a label above which says There was an error working with the photo. There is no metadata showing next to it. The only thing I have done in the last few days to the computer is to run updates on my operating system. Actually Lightroom isn't then only thing not working, my accounting programme won't work at all now!
I am new to lightroom so not 100% sure what I am doing, any insight would be welcome.
    Thanks

My iPhoto closed unexpectedly and now it says "Rebuilding the iPhoto Library database". What is going on and are my photos still going to be there?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
what version of iPhoto are you using?
what system version are you running?
what were you doing when iPhoto closed unexpectedly?
how big is your library, i.e. how many photos?
how long has the rebuilding been going on?
do you have a recent backup of the library made just prior to this occurring?
    where is your library located?
did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
    what type of Mac?
how much free space on your boot drive?

  • I've set up a new iMac and transferred my library.  Now, when I switch on iTunes Match it gets to about 25% on stage 1 and just stops working,  Anyone know how to fix this?

I've set up a new iMac and transferred my library.  Now, when I switch on iTunes Match it gets to about 25% on stage 1 and just stops working,  Anyone know how to fix this?

Ok, so the likely cause is 1 or more Songs are tripping up iTunes Match.  To resolve, move to Song view, switch on iCloud Status and iCloud Download fields - sort the view on iCloud Status - identify Songs with status other than Purchased, Matched or Uploaded.  Temporarily remove them from the library, allow iTunes Match to complete the 3-step process.  Gradually import the Songs back in - any that cause a repeat failure, place in a playlist, burn to audio CD and import as 256k AAC.
Note:  iTunes Match service in UK at present is intermittant, may be worth trying from 1200 tomorrow to give Apple the chance to complete its current updates.
