Iphoto '09 organizing question

You all have heard this before, I am a Windoze convert and I just can't like iphoto!!! I've been a mac owner for about 5 months now and am really trying to setup iphoto so its nice and neat. I've noticed keywords seem to be key to making that work, but I just wish it would let me do what I want it to do. One big question I have is when you are in the "photos" library view, just below the events - Why can I not list those by alphabetical Event title, or get that "photos" view on the event screen? Meaning I really like looking at the events title in a nice neat list (with thumbnails closed) - I just need it to alphabetize!! An answer to helping me do this would go a long way toward making me like iphoto more!!! I am also considering moving to Aperture because it seems more flexible, but I am giving iphoto a chance here.

You know that you don't have to use iPhoto, right? It's not right for everybody. And it may not be right for you.
You can't sort Events in Photos View because sorting in Photos View is sorting Photos, not Events. So, you can use the View menu to Sort, and you'll see what you're offered is "Sort Photos". In Events View that becomes 'Sort Events'.
You just can't do what you want to do, in other words. (Nor, afaik, is this available in Aperture either.)

  • Using iPhoto for organizing and another program for editing

I really like iPhoto for organizing my photos. The tags/comments along with smart albums are amazing. The problem is that I would like to edit the photos externally to iPhoto. I am wondering if there is a way to edit your photos externally but still use iPhoto to organize them? Would iPhoto still be able to allow the external program to edit the photo nondestructively?
I am looking to use Gimp (using X11) to edit my photos.
    Thanks for any help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. There is a caveat to using a 3rd party editor from within iPhoto. If Gimp is capable of creating layered files and/or changes the extension to its own after extensive editing you must take some precautions so as not to lose those edits.
Any time the 3rd party editor requires a change of extension due to the editing you must either flatten the image and/or force a save as a jpg with the same original file name OR do a Save As to the desktop and import that file as a new one. Otherwise you run the chance of saving the edited file and not have iPhoto know it exists.

  • IPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! Help?

iPhoto has a question mark over it. Wont open! It is completely inaccessible. How can i restore this to my computer and get my pics back?

iPhoto has a question mark over it.
You mean in the Dock?  Then the Dock icon is no longer linked to the application.
Did you upgrade MacOS X, so iPhoto is no longer compatible?
If you moved or deleted iPhoto, reinstall it. It will depend on your iPhoto version and MacOS X version, how to reinstall.
If your profile signature ""OS X (10.6.8)" is still valid, reinstall iPhoto from your system install disks, if iPhoto came preinstalled on your Mac, or from your iLife install disks.
If you already upgraded to Yosemite, you can reinstall iPhoto from the App Store.

  • IPhoto library Location Question

Hello Apple Discussion wizards, though this is my first post, i've used this forum extensively and you have all helped me with many problems.
Anyway, old macbook was killed by humidity, currently on new imac.
old iphoto library was recovered and loaded to an external. my new iphoto library had around 300 pics, old one had around 12000, all organized by albums and such, so naturally i wanted to move the new iphoto library photos into my old one, and make my old library the default on my new computer.
essentially, i dragged the files from my old iphoto onto the desktop, held option while i opened iphoto, seleected the old library, then dragged the 300 pics into it.
now, currently iphoto opens with all my pics. the library location is
    /Users/claycohen/Pictures/iPhotoLibrary1
everything seems cool, but im worried about the location/permissions of the library
for example, if i go to change my desktop photo in system prefs, when i browse finder, my iPhotoLibrary1 is greyed out and cant be selected.
    MAIN QUESTION:
Is there a way to reset my current library to factory location and settings but keep all my albums/photos etc?
thanks for your help everyone, if that didn't make sense i can try to re explain. to quote thom yorke - i just want "everything in its right place"

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to check and repair Library permissions.

  • IPhoto library management question...again

First of all, I am new to the forums and new to Macs in general, hence some of my concerns/questions are probably a result of my exclusive use of Windows.
I have a relatively large number of photos (15,000) and have spent a lot of time over the years organizing them in a logical structure (Photos->Year->Month->Date->JPG files...) I have been reading a lot about iPhoto and I do understand the file structure within iPhoto, and I would be happy to begin adapting with my new photos. However, I am looking for an efficient way to transfer over all my hundreds of folders to the iPhoto library. I know it's been asked before, but thought maybe I am missing something. If I am way off then blame it on the extensive use of Windows over the last 15 years...I am mainly concerned with preserving the file structure/hierarchy. Do I need to just throw it from my OCD mind and just let iPhoto deal with it, while I practice with the export function?!?
Thanks for any input you can provide.

Each folder imported into iPhoto ends up as a single event. However, they will not be nested. You can go thru and add the year, month and date to the folder titles be for importing and you'll get an Event name that will be more indicative of the contents. I use "MM/DD/YY-Brief description".
Then, as Larry suggested you can duplicate your folder hierarchy in iPhoto by creating a virtual folder to match the container folders (those that contain other folders but no photos) and drag those Events into it to create albums for those events.

  • Rotating images in iphoto & screen saver questions

    hi there!!
i'm a newbie to apple discussions! too bad i didn't find out about it BEFORE i broke the cardinal rule and lost nearly my WHOLE library very comforting to see that i'm not the only one ;_
    anyway, here are my questions:
    1. when i import images into iphoto library, the vertical ones automatically show up in the upright position in the library. BUT when i switch to the edit window they show up sideways. the same is true when i use my iphoto library/folders as a screen saver: even though they are upright in the library, they are being displayed sideways. if i rotate them inside the edit window into the upright position, they show up sideways in my library. it seems like either way i can't win.
    2. when i use iphoto library or any of my albums as a screen saver, the slideshow plays for a little while and then stops. i mean, not longer than 2 or 3 minutes long. and sometimes i won't start at all. any ideas??
    thank you much!!!

  • Iphoto and organizing albums...

I'm slowly learning iphoto and I'm having a hard time with organizing albums/folders.  I like to organize my pictures by using albums/folders like in windows.  I've created albums/folders and I'm taking the photos from events and putting them into these newly named albums/folders.  The problem is that when I go to move them around to organize by my preference, I can't drop and drag without the album/folder going into another album/folder.  It does allow me to drop to the bottom, but it goes into the last album/folder and then I have to move it out of that.  It's very cumbersome and there has to be an easier way, I'm making due, but I'm doing things that are very confusing and time consuming.

Folder drag and drop the same way as albums do. Movie Test Folder 1 to between the other two folders:
    Select, drag and drop
    to give you this:
One just needs to be sure the cursor is at the far left before releasing.

  • Screen Saver (using iphoto folder) - 2 questions

New imac....thanks for the input. Two questions with the screen saver that uses random iphoto folder pics.
    1. The resolution on some pics looks horrible (I thinked they must be zoomed in), but even on ones that are not, the pics look more grainy then when I see them in iphoto at roughly same size. Any suggestions?
    2. Wife liked the ability to scroll through the screen saver pics in Windows XP but hitting right arrow button. THis would not disengage screen saver and should could see all the pics. Anyway to do this on Mac...she would LOVE to know!
    Thanks!

HI Dan and Welcome to Apple Discussions and congrats on the new iMac!
For starters... here is information for slideshows/screen savers available to use with a .mac account:
Using a .Mac slideshow as a screen saver
You can use a .Mac member's public slideshow as your screen saver.
To set up a .Mac screen saver, you need the .Mac member name of the person publishing the pictures. You do not need to be a .Mac member to see a slideshow or use it as a screen saver.
Open a web browser and visit a website to make sure you're connected to the Internet.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Desktop & Screen Saver.
Click Screen Saver, then select .Mac in the Screen Savers list.
Click Options, and enter the .Mac member name in the .Mac Membership Name field.
The slideshow is downloaded to your computer. When it's finished, you can disconnect from the Internet.
To publish your own slideshow, you need a .Mac membership. To learn more, visit www.mac.com
And rule of thumb using your own photos as a screen saver: If the pictures look fuzzy, try using larger pictures (such as 1024 x 768 pixels).

  • How Is Aperture Better Then iPhoto At Organizing Photos?

I was just wondering what sets Aperture apart from iPhoto when it comes to organizing my photos?
I just purchased Aperture for this reason and was just wanting to know some of the key features for organizing in Aperture.
    Thanks,
    Sam
Please feel free to tell me anything you know about Aperture because I would love to know!

Asset management tools the key is to keep your images organised as your library of photos grows and grows. And Aperture is much more of a king than iPhoto in this regard.
In iphoto for example the search facility is fairly simple to use and yes you can use keywords to find an image, however as you library grows and your workflow becomes much more sophisticated, and it will, when you work as a photographer, you will want to have a much more powerful search facility such as to able to go into Aperture and search for images using more criteria. In smart albums in iPhoto there is a list of words of metadata fields to use for searching for images, but in aperture there is literally dozens of metadata fields you can choose from to powerfully find any image efficiently and quickly. And in Aperture it records every little detail of your cameras data that you can use in your search facility.
There is a few ways how to efficiently organize your images in Aperture what I have mentioned just above is really just a tip of the iceberg.

  • IPhoto book - resolution questions

What resolution should I use to scan in my printed 4x6 photos to get the best result from iPhoto book? Is 300 ppi sufficient, or should I use 400 or higher? Don't want to scan higher than needed since the files are quite large. Don't know what the resolution is of the printer used by Apple.
Also, is it still the case that I should make sure photos are first cropped to 4x3 for best results? I have the latest version of iLife 5.
    Thanks for advice!
    Tara

Jeff - thanks so much for your reply - very helpful. I'm scanning them all in at 600 dpi to give me options of printing some large.
Another question - does anyone have experience with making photo albums from other programs/services? Are they all about the same in terms of quality? From the few I've checked out, they all look pretty much the same (as advertised) so I'm guessing they are using similar printers/processes and that quality would be about the same. In which case, I can go ahead and be confident that even though I will use iPhoto book because I am a die-hard Mac user and iPhoto is so easy to use, I'm not losing out on a better quality book that might be available through another software/service.
Thanks again for advice - can't wait to make my first iPhoto album of pre-digital camera baby pics for my now 6-year old. I made one for my boss last year that came out great but all the pics came from digital cameras.

  • IPhoto 6 workflow questions -- iPhoto & Elements

All -- just installed iLife 6, but have not used it yet. The combination of iWeb & .mac looks very promising for finally being able to easily share my photos with my family/friends. But I am still not clear on the best file workflow to be able to take advantage of all the iPhoto/iWeb/,mac functionality, and also the editing power of Adobe Elements (the editing software I am using). If you all could help me with this I would be so grateful.
    I shoot JPEG.
I move a photo from iPhoto to Element to edit it.
If my goal is to move it back to iPhoto to share, how should I resize it? How should I optimize it for the best quality while viewing on a monitor, but with enough quality that if folks want to make a print, they can?
What format should I save it back to iPhoto in? JPEG? Or can iPhoto handle TIF or PSD and is that recommended?
What about a master, unedited image. Should I worry about that? And if so, where will that live?
If I plan on printing a photo, should I optimize the file for that purpose and print from Elements instead of bringing the file back into iPhoto?
As you can see from my questions, I am still unclear on the relationship of iPhoto and Elements (or any other editing software). I would be so grateful for any help you can give in this discussion, or other places you can point me to get this information.
    Thanks everyone!
    Greg

haha, the way I work is, if a program doesn't do what I want the way I want it, then I find a program that does. For many, just iPhoto will fit the bill.
This is what I do. I take a photo shoot. If it is important photos, I upload them to ClubPhoto so others can download and print them. Most often I do not print my 4x6 photos. I wait till there is a special at ClubPhoto for half price prints and order all my yearly prints at that time. I buy one photo album that fits 200 photos and I order 200 photos from my albums online to be printed. Year in photos are now done.
If someone comes over and says, hey, I love that photo, can you print it out for me? then I use my Printers software to print the 4x6 or 8x10.
I used .mac and now iWeb to keep family and friends informed of whats going on in Photos and videos. It's more or less just for fun.
When I said I have an iWeb site, I mean that I have used iWeb, a new application in the iLife suite to publish a web site with photos movie clips and a blog.
You do not have to do any resizing if you are going to use iWeb as the software does it for you behind the lines.
If you are resizing to upload anywhere else or for another purpose, it all depends on what size you need for your purpose. For album sites, 800x600 is a good size.
For emailing a photo, either do it right within iPhoto and you will get a choice on what size you want to send, or export to the desktop, at which time you can input the size you want to export the photo at.
I always keep full resolution photos in my library. If I want a smaller size, I always export the image at a smaller size and keep the full size in the library.

  • Iphoto library folder question.

Don't quite know how to word this one but here goes. If i go to Finder and click on the Pictures icon, i see an iPhoto Library icon. If i highlight that then click on the small wheel cog thing drop down menu above it and go to "Open With" i see several "iPhoto" options. The top one says default but under that there are four more iPhoto icons. Whichever one i click on it seems to open iPhoto correctly but why do i have so many, i only have one iPhoto Library on my mac. I went to the apple store today but they couldn't answer my question,. I did have a look at thier macs scattered about the store and they all seem to have this issue. Some of them had two iPhoto icons, some had three. I was expecting there to be only one?
What causes there to be so many?
I'm just a neat freak so these things puzzle me.

Hi Leonie. Thanks for such a swift reply. As far as i can see i only have one version of iPhoto installed. I've only had the Mac for less than a year and haven't changed any settings.
As i say, i had a quick play with the Macs in the Apple store and most of them had this same thing. There were one or two that just had the iPhoto showing once.
When i click on "Open With"...it's listed as follows          iPhoto (default)
                                                                                        iPhoto
                                                                                        iPhoto
                                                                                       iPhoto
                                                                                        Terminal
Whichever one i click on to it opens iPhoto with no problem. I'm just confused as to why there are four.
Any further help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Re-importing into iPhoto 06 Quick Question

    I hope.
My photos are on an external hard drive. I jogged the wire the other day during an import and stopped the import. When I next loaded up iPhoto all the photos had changed to ! , so I reimported them, which all worked fine, but it's reimported everything including the thumbnails, so I now have every picture at least twice and want to get rid of all the small sized files.
Can I do it a quick way like search for photos below a certain size or should I import from a different point? I imported from the iPhoto directory, but should I have been a bit more specific on a sub directory? I want to make sure I get the original photos and any photos I've edited.
Finally, should I delete the existing thumbnails in one of the directories before I re-import?
    Thanks

    It’s not a quick question.
so I reimported them, which all worked fine, but it's reimported everything including the thumbnails, so I now have every picture at least twice
This was not the way to go about this. You’ve now imported to a damaged database and that is inherently unstable.
There is no way to search on file size in iPhoto. You may have some luck with Duplicate Annihilator
However, do you still have the original library? If so, here’s how to start over:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
