IPhoto '09 Slideshow timing off

I'm using iPhoto '09 with all the latest patches. I have 10.6.1 OS X.
I have a slideshow of 99 pictures in iPhoto using the Snapshots theme. I have set the duration for all slides to 7.1 seconds, which should yield a slideshow duration of 11 minutes and 43 seconds, give or take a second or two. However, when I export the slideshow out to a quicktime DV format, it is only 10:57... almost a minute shy of what it should be.
This is a problem because I have the last picture in the set timed out with the fading out of the music, if iPhoto would just follow my math / timing I told it to.
So I go back and set the timing for 7.2 seconds on every slide... exact same result... total run time of 10:57. I do it again and adjust the slide duration to 7.5 seconds... exact same result... 10:57. So I quit iPhoto and go back in and rebuild the slideshow again, and this time set it to 8 seconds a slide... export to quicktime DV... exact same result... 10:57, ending a minute too early and cutting of the last minute of my song.
The kicker is this... The slideshow was 100 (vs. 99 as it is now) and when I exported it to quicktime DV it came out to 12 minutes and 4 seconds long. The only thing I did was delete one photo and re-export it and it cut the slideshow down over a minute. ***???? Shouldn't it just make the slideshow 7 or so seconds shorter when I delete one photo????
I'm so ****** about this crazy crap... makes me feel like I'm using a PC instead of a Mac when this arbitrary and illogical crap happens for no good reason.
And before you say "just use the fit slideshow to music", let me tell you, it always errors out. I have three songs that I fused together into one .wav file using iMovie HD. It is 12:05 long. When I add it as the only song it iPhoto's custom playlist on the slideshow, and then enable the fit slideshow to music option, it tells me that the music I selected is too short for so many photos, and that I need at least 12:03 worth of music... even though I have 12:05 worth of music selected! How is that too short for 99 or 100 photos? That's like 7 seconds a photo, which is fairly long for each to display.
This is microsoft dumb.

If you still have a copy of iMovie HD 6 I suggest you use that to add the music to the slideshow. Create the slideshow without music, import it into iMovie HD 6, and add your audio tracks where you can trim, fade in/out, and have precise placement.

  • Slideshow Timing - Changing Individual Slide Timing

in iPhoto '11 is there any way to change the timing of an individual slide? I'm preparing a slideshow of pictures for a Thanksgiving service where the pastor wants a text slide every couple minutes with some words he wants the congregation to speak. These slides would need more time than the other picture slides. I've already created the text slides in Photoshop, saved them as JPEGS and inserted them into the right places in the slideshow.

That option is only available for some themes and not others.
    Classic
    Shatter
    Ken Burns
The others themes don't have this feature.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie, on every Mac sold, as is iDVD.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter $29
    PhotoToMovie $49.95
    PulpMotion $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Express $199
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.
However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Express is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

  • BUG: iPhoto 9 Slideshow - Text Slide Bugs and iPhoto Library Corruption

I was wondering if anyone else has run into the following issues:
I have had multiple issues with iPhoto crashing, stop responding, and database corruption where I cannot open iPhoto. These issues all began when I tried to use the new themed slideshow in iPhoto v9.1. Previously, I had only used iPhoto to create basic slideshows with iPhoto v7.x. I was hoping that I would be able to create my masterpiece in iPhoto 11 (v9.1) but I have only been frustrated by my attempts so far.
What should have been a 3 - 4 hour operation has become a 20 hour nightmare and I still don't have a slideshow to show for my efforts. This has been one of my most disappointing uses of Apple software ever.
Repeatable, reproducible bugs that I have run into include:
    1. Deleting a photo that appears in the timeline before a sub-title causes havoc with subsequent sub-titles (a.k.a. Text Slides). Subsequent subtitles are randomly copied to pictures following the one it was assigned to. Further, there is no subtitle icon in the timeline and the photos have to be manually modified to eliminate the subtitle. Work around is click the "Text Slide" button
    2. Zooming and/or image placement is not preserved and not visible when previewed, exported, or iPhoto is closed and then reopened.
    3. The iPhoto Library becomes corrupt and permissions problems prevent me from working with my photos. This happens while working on slideshow. I have had to rebuild my library and repair permissions no less than five times since I started working on my slideshow.

iPhoto's slideshow feature is fine but no tool for a "masterpiece".

  • IPhoto 9 Slideshow Quality

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro 13,3" with iLife 11 and Nikon Picture Project .
and I have many photos that were improted from a Nikon Camera.
When I see the photo in the slideshow mode in iPhoto the Photo does not have a good quality .
If I see the same Photo with Picture Project the result is better,I can see details that iPhoto can not show.
I dont use the export functions .
Is there a solution for this problem ?
    Thanks

In iPhoto, when you play a slideshow it's showing you the actual photos.
After export , you're watching a movie made from these images. The process of exporting to a movie necessarily involves compression. Even HD export is still about 2 MP range. If you're shooting 6, 10, 12 or more MP images there is an inevitable loss of data. The enormous stills from your camera are being squeezed down into HDTV quality. It's even worse if you try export for a DVD. TV avoids this by not shooting such high quality images.
So, what you can try is use another app and one that has different algorithms for this process. Frankly, it'll be a process of trial and error to find the one that works best for your images.
    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
iMovie is on every Mac sold. It's worth a try, though it only has the same export options as iPhoto now. Older versions had more.
    Others, in order of price:
    PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299

Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. • Iphoto 08 slideshow music not playing

After making a slideshow with iphoto I mixed some songs together using garageband, then exported the mixed songs to iTunes.
But when I choose that track in iTunes for my slideshow it doesn't play. I've tried a bunch of other songs they won't play either. I have done this before using iphoto 06 and didn't have any problems. But now with 08 I can't seem to get any music to play with my slideshow.
Which means no exporting to iDVD, no burning to a disk, no showing off to my friends.
Can anybody tell me what my problem is??

    soulmanbdr529:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you able to get non-Garageband mixed playlists to work in iPhoto's slideshows? If so then there's something GB is doing to the joined tracks that iPhoto doesn't like. For that you'd probably get more informed responses in the Garageband forums.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto 11  slideshow mode decreases the image sharpness and quality

The images that weight over 5 MB and are fine and sharp become somewhat blured when displayed in the iPhoto '11 slideshow mode. The loss of image sharpness is just too big. The pictures look like they were made with a 100$ camera or even worse. I know the images are fine and big enough. I used picasa slideshow mode just to check. I saw a much better image quality and no noticable lose of sharpness.
Anyone has an idea why the iPhoto 11 slideshow mode looses so much image sharpness?

We all like iPhoto and its ease of use, good looks and fancy features.
However Aplle must concentrate on the core .... sufficient quality of the displayed images. The colors, sharpness, tones - the essence of photography
I understand that iPhoto is not the Aperture. But if the Slide Show mode virtually washes the sharpness away from the pictures than something is not right! Picture that is not sharp is worth the trash
If picasa slide show can do it I am sure iPhoto slide show can do it even better! We are waiting for the upgrade

  • I just downloaded 950 photos on iPhoto and deleted them off my camera and now under last import there is only 4 photos and i can't find the others?? There is a whole bunch of blank events in the library with no photos in them all with todays date? Help!!

Yes - you need a min of 10 GB just to operate - with just 1 you certainly can lose photos and other critical things - you need to make space immediately - probably by moving your iPhoto library to a volume formatted Mac OS extended -
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • IPhone video H.264 will not play in iPhoto '11 Slideshow

    Hello,
I use iPhoto to organize videos and .jpgs; I take videos both with a Sony camera and my iPhone. I often trim videos in iPhoto and then play them as part of a Event or Album, along with .jpgs, using the SlideShow feature before moving on to iMovie or Keynote. Recently I have encountered difficulties with iPhone H.264 videos, particularly in vertical format -- they simply won't play in the iPhoto simple SlideShow and lock it up (a simple X then ends the SlideShow and iPhoto is no longer locked). The vertical iPhone videos work in iMovie if I simply move them there. I have not detected any problems with the Sony videos, which are invariably horizontal. I am not experiencing any other iPhoto issues although my library is >125GB.
         Any Suggestions?
        Thanks for your thoughts.

    léonie,
         @#$^$%^ Computers!
After I realized I could not determine the frame rate (to respond to your post), out of frustration I went back, restored the most troublesome video to original, closed iPhoto, re-opened iPhoto, re-trimed the troublesome video, and .... yep, you guessed it .... it worked fine. It had to be something in the trim process.
I haven't taken time to check the others that were problematic, but I'm confident that was the problem.
@#% how much of my time; how much of your time.....but, still far better than the years I spent watching a rotating hourglass.
Thanks for your interest, your offer to help, and my best to you. (And, my apologies for failing to include the accent grave in your name previously.

  • Unable to import IPhoto 6 slideshows to IDVD 6

When I try to send a SLIDESHOW with captions and music prepared in iPhoto 6 to IDVD to burn to a DVD by choosing Share>Send to IDVD i get the following message "An error occured while exporting the slideshow, the export movie file could not be created". This is inconsistent with the statement in iDVD Help Tutorial "In iPhoto send SLIDESHOWS directly to iDVD to create a project with slideshow buttons". What am I doing wrong?

you may be using a file format iDVD doesn't recognize (or you may have a corrupted image/file) hard to tell without seeing what you are currently working on. try the file again, or use a different image in it's place.
if this too fails then drag and drop the plist for both apps to the trash (empty it) and restart the computer.
    com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    com.apple.iDvd.plist
Use the Finder (happy face on the dock) plus copy and paste for the above items (individually) and hit return.
In the event you see either item appear more than once, dispose of all of them.
    Good luck!

  • IPhoto 11 - slideshow music issue on manual picture change

    Hi community,
do you experience the same behaviour?
When navigating through the pictures in an iPhoto 11 slideshow manually e.g. by using forward and backward arrow keys, then the music always stutters or let's say "jumps" a little bit. Very annoying!
Does anybody have the same issue? Does anybody know a solution for this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Flo

Yes.  iPhoto is jumping to the music synced to that slide when you use the advanced arrow key.  That's normal.   The only solution is to let the slideshow play itself out.
