IPhoto '09 upgradeable?
iPhoto '09, version 8.1.2 is what I currently have on my Mac desktop. I have over 10,000 photos and I would like to upgrade to the new iPhoto version so I can share photos with my other iOS devices. BUT...I am terrified I will lose all these photos. I did back them up on an external "My Passport" disk and to time machine. So---do I buy the new iPhoto from the App store? Or how do I upgrade? I do have OS X 10.9.2 running on the Mac.
Advice is appreciated. Thanks
I did back them up on an external "My Passport" disk and to time machine.
You're good to go. Purchase iPhoto 9.5.1, launch it and let it do its thing on updating your library to the newest version.

With Yosemite you must be running iPhoto 9.6.1 which is a available from the App Store. If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll have to download and apply the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 to the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.6.1. It'll be located in the Applications/Utilities folder after downloading.
Now for your system:

As long as the memory pressure is in the green and constant and you're not seeing a lot of SWODs you shouldn't be concerned about the memory. Of course increasing memory will nearly always improve general system and application performance. But you didn't mention slowness as part of your problem. -
Can anyone give a list of upgradeable performance parts for a mid 2012 macbook pro 13"?
I have a non Retina display mid 2012 macbook pro that I want to do a home refurbishment and mass upgrade on, the processor and graphics cards are both good as is but RAM gets a bit bottlenecked with only 8gb, Id like to be able to replace the built in speakers and possibly upgrade the optical/super drive as well If thats not too large an Endeavor.
I'm mostly a comp work virgin, so I want to make sure what I want to do isn't too tricky
Here's my etrecheck to check my specs on

OS X Yosemite iPhoto 9.6 won't open except in full screen
Upgraded to Yosemite, iPhoto 9.6. Mid-2011 iMac. When I open the iPhoto app, I get a top bar and the dot under the icon to indicate that the app is open, but nothing happens. I go to the menu, View, Enter Full Screen. Only then can I see anything in iPhoto. Then I can Exit Full Screen and navigate. But this is a headache and a sill extra couple of steps. Have tried repairing permissions, checked them with the admin module, deleted and reinstalled iPhoto altogether. Still, can't open iPhoto normally. Suggestions?

IPhoto 9.6 hangs when importing raw files.
since upgrading to Yosemite and upgrading iPhoto my macbook pro hangs every time I try to import photos from an SD card. I can import one or two but if I try to import new photos ~300 photos then the kernel task memory usage shoots up to use 95% or more of memory and then it starts running extremely slow and the memory pressure jumps between yellow and red. If I kill iPhoto the kernel task doesn't release the memory.
I have tried uninstalling iPhoto and and restoring and rebuilding the iPhoto library but to no avail at this point.
Anybody have any other ideas or know if there is a bug with iPhoto 9.6 processing raw files?EtreCheck version: 2.0.6 (91)

Where can I access / download an iPhoto version to run on a G3 iMac?
My parents run OS 9.2 on an old blue G3 iMac - great machine, but not upgradeable to X. They have a large number of old family photos which I have been scanning for them. Is there an available iPhoto version which I can access for them to run their slideshows? If so, where can I find it? Thanks.
G3 iMac Mac OS 9.2.x G4 tower, iBook, G5 iMacre iPhoto on iMac G3 OS 9 --
All versions of iPhoto require OS X. So if your particular iMac G3 is not going to be running OS X, you will need to use a different application.
Apple requirements for iPhoto 4-5-5 here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93634
FYI: iPhoto (1) - Jan 2002
iPhoto 2 - Jan 2003, part of iLife (and available free)
iPhoto 4 - Jan 2004, part of iLife '04 ($49 SRP)
iPhoto 5 - Jan 2005, part of iLife '05 ($79 SRP)
iPhoto 6 - Jan 2005, part of iLife '05 ($70 SRP)
I have recommended QPict to several friends and clients who are on OS 9. QPict has versions for both OS 9 and OS X.
It is fairly reasonably priced (esp. compared to some of the other commercial products) around $35, has a fully functioning 20-day trial, and you can find out about it at their site: http://www.qpict.net/
Hope this helps. (sorry noway to get iPhoto running on os9

Problem with corrupted Iphoto libary thanks to "cleaning programmes"
Problem description:
Iphoto library is corrupted, showing images as exclamation mark. Have recently used CleanMyMac, and suspect that is the problem. I have now tried to delete these cleaning programmes, but not sure I have completely succeeded? Also; what do I do next in order to restore my Iphoto library?
I read previous comments regarding the same problem, and run the Etresoft programme, and see that I still have some issues with MacPaw/CleanMyMac. So my questions are:
1) How do I get completely rid of MacPaw/CleanMyMac?
2) How do I go about fixing my iphoto library, which was the original problem?
( I am not able to understand the information provided below, so if there are any other areas of concern, please advise me!)

If there is no uninstaller, download and install "FindAnyFile" and search for files with CleanMyMac2. in the name. You can reveal the files that are found in the Fnder and delete them this way. Download it here: http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
To recover your iPhoto Library:
Make copy of the library as it now on an external drive.
Then use your Time Machine backup to restore the iPhoto library from a date before you cleaned the library. If you let CleanMyMac 2 remove duplicates, it will have deleted original image files and replaced them edited versions, and these links may be incorrect. It is hard to fix this manually. Restoring from your backup will be the best solution. -
I just wiped my hard disk and rebooted snow leopard 10.6.8 and now have lost my iphoto. It is not present in my original disk and I want the easiest way to reinstall iphoto. I have an older macbook pro that is not upgradeable anymore, but still works great and I use it as a spare, but would like the ability to have iphoto. Where do I order the appropriate install and is there an option to download it on line?
Are you sure the disks that came with your computer doesn't have a disk similar to one of these?
If you're missing the disk than you'll have to do what Niel suggests.

IPhoto crawls with large library
I am running a Macbook Pro from early 2011, OS X 10.9.5 with 2.7 GHz Core i& process, 4 GB of Ram with 500 GB HD and 160 GB available. The iPhoto Library alone is 167 GB and iPhoto crawls each time we use it. We take a lot of photos and video and this file will only get larger over time.
Is there a solution that would allow iPhoto to operate faster besides upgrading to a new computer?
Thank you.iPhoto is the slowest app. The computer is somewhat sluggish, but I am not sure what to expect for a machine from 2011. Thank you for the heads up on EtreCheck. Here is the report below.

IMac crashes when editing heavy photo's in iPhoto
Dear iMac professors,
Since two months I am using a new camera with pictures that are (even) heavier than before (up to 20Mb).
When editing the pictures it looks like my iMac (dating from 2009 - yes, it is time to upgrade...) can't handle them. This results in a crash of my iMac meaning it does not react to any command anymore. Also the mouse acts as being dead. This happens frequently and I do not have a solution.
I already tried the Cmd+alt+Esc soft restart, but this did not help as the key commands do not work.
The only thing that "helps" is a hard return (switching off the power to the iMac).
I have a 1 TB hard disk memory of which more than 700 Gb is still free.
Thanks for any smart solutions you may want to share.
Regards,
AellomOld Toad,
A smart tool that confirms my iMac has (only) 4GB RAM.
Time to upgrade or should iPhoto (with less than 9,000 pictures) work well on this machine as well?
Regards,
Aellom

I'm thinking about getting a 21.5" iMac which comes with 8GB of RAM. Unfortunately, the RAM is not user-upgradeable. Do you think 8GB is enough memory, or should I upgrade to 16GB? Besides internet surfing and email, I like to play flash games and listen to internet radio. Occasionally, I might want to stream a movie. I would greatly appreciate any advice you could give me.
For what you list, 8GB should be adequate. I ran with 4GB without any issue for over a year in my iMac i7 before I added RAM, primarily for running Win 7 via Bootcamp.
The tasks that need a lot of RAM are typically video editing/production, heavy-duty photo manipulation (not iPhoto or PS Elements), and professional page layout like Adobe Creative Suite. If you think that, down the road, you may want to delve into those fileds with this computer, by all means get the extra RAM.
I like to play flash games
I didn't try a lot of Flash games while I still had 4GB RAM but those I tried ran without issue and without causing a non-trivial number of page-outs -
Iphoto crashing after using mini-dvi to video adapter
Hi, IPhoto on my Macbook is crashing. I can open it, then as soon as I scroll down it locks up and I have to force quit.
This started happening right after I used a Mini-DVI to Video Adapter cable to hook my macbook up to my TV. The adapter/s-video connection worked and I was able to see the video on the tv. But iphoto immediately locked up the computer when I went to slide show and now it locks every time I open it.
Any ideas?
Thank you:)
DorothyIt means that the issue resides in your existing Library.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

TD
