A download, iPhoto, Version 9.4.2, released November 2012; has been on my download page for three weeks.  Despite a half dozen attempts to install it, it has never completed the download.  Near the end it always says an error has occurred.  What can I do?  The unit onto/into which I am attempting to install this is a new MacBook Air.
    thank you.

    Thanks LN.
I tried.  It would not download.  A drop down notice said an error had occurred and to return to the purchase page; which I have done on numerous occasions.  (What I am to do on the purchase page I am not sure, other than to click on purchases and see that the same iPhoto download is available.  By the way, this was not purchased.  It just showed up with two other items free items, which did download nicely.)

  • IPhoto 8.0.4 Update released today

iPhoto 8.0.4 Update was posted today on Apple's download site. This is what is said about it:
"This update addresses a rarely encountered issue involving photos imported into a previous version that could affect overall stability, and corrects references to a few points of interest and location names that were labelled incorrectly."
Haven't installed it as yet because the servers are glacially slow and the update is large, 102MB. Current download time remaining is 34 minutes where is usually would complete in about 2-3 minutes for that size a file. It seems all of Apple's servers are having trouble lately.

    Thanks Toad,
It amazes iMe how some of you figure this complex set of steps out.
In receipts, I do see Flip for Mac. No iPhoto was there.

  • How to use iPhoto on Mac and iOS in conjunction

I'm using iPhoto on both my Mac, iPhone and iPad. After the new Photo Stream and the new iPhoto iOS app has been released I think it is all started to get a little confusing. Here is some of my thoughts.
    1) When I delete a photo from my Photo Stream the photo gets deleted on all my devices. Nice. On my Mac, iPhoto is for instance creating a "mar. 2012 Photo Stream" event, where all photos from the Photo Stream is keept -- also the deleted once. That's OK. On my Mac I can cleanup these events by deleting the unwanted photos. All my photos are synced to iPad but it seems, that I cannot cleanup these events on iPhoto on my iPad. Is that right? I'm able to "hide" the photos from the events, but that does not delete them -- and they are still visible on my Mac after their are synced.
    2) I have an "Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit" making me able to import photos from my camera to my iPad, which I do daily when I'm on vacation. I thought that I could just import the photos to my iPad, put them in an event/album, edit/retouch them -- and when my iPad gets near my Mac the events/albums gets synced to my iPhoto on my Mac (without having to import them to the Mac manually). But it seems that the Camera app on my iPad is just putting the imported Photos in the "Last Import" album. How is Apple thinking we should do this? I cannot find a way to move them to an Event.
    3) Generally, the difference between Albums and Events in iPhoto iOS seems unclear. After the new iPhoto for iOS was released, I was hoping that I could edit, retouch and choose the best photos from an Events and put them in an Album. I can create a Journal with these photos but that is not always what I want. For instance if I would like to make a slideshow for my TV, it would be nice to have a clean album where only the best photos from an event. How is Apple thinking this should be done?
Please tell me how you are using iPhoto on Mac and iOS. For me it does not work perfectly.

Not only do they not work perfectly, they do not work together at all. Pretty much the only thing they share is a name. They are quite independent apps. Editing history on one can not be carried over to the other, so you can't start working on shots on one device and continue on the other. Events, Albums etc have no relation with each other and so on. Perhaps the next version of iPhoto (for either OS) will move them closer together but at this time they have no relationship at all.

  • Journals of iPhoto not in Photos for iOS 8

The journal feature of iPhoto has been lost. Will it be included in Photos in the near future? Are there third party apps with which I can accomplish the same?

Send feedback to Apple and let the developers know. You can use this form:  Apple - iPhoto - Feedback
Perhaps later Photos releases will add more features, if enough users send feedback.

  • Random iPhoto 11 images missing

Hi there - I'm new to the community and had a couple of questions regarding iPhoto '11 (which continues to frustrate the heck out of me!).
    1. Some of my images that were in my iPhoto library are now showing only the cached thumbnails.  When I click on the thumbnail, no image is displayed, just a big explanation mark.  If I select 'Reveal in Finder', none of the options (Original/Modified) are available.  I am able to manually locate the image on my drive however and can confirm that the location and filename have not been changed.
    2. I'll sometimes get the 'photo cannot be displayed because the file could not be found' dialog, even though I was able to view the image without a problem the previous time I had opened iPhoto.  I go through the dialog steps of re-locating the photo (which had never moved in the first place) and all seems well but after a few times opening iPhoto, I'll start to get the same dialog again.
This same issue has happened several times since I first installed iPhoto when it was first released. I've rebuilt the library & thumbnails, re-located 'missing' files and even started from scratch a couple of times.  iPhoto seems to play well for a time, then these issues start back up again.  I'd like to keep using iPhoto but I'm seriously frustrated; any help would be appreciated!
Not sure if it needs mentioning but I only have around 4000 images and don't use the 'Copy items to the iPhoto library' preference - I prefer to have my images outside iPhoto because of all the hassles I've been having.
    Cheers!

The exclamtation mark is an indication that the file path to the original file has been broken.
Since you are running a "referecned" library you will have to manually relink the thumbnails to the original files wherever they may be.  You can do that with those that give your the "Can't find file" messager.
So try this: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
You probably will continue to have problems with the library seeing as it's a "referenced" library and is very fragile.

  • Why don't titles from iPhoto iOS transfer to Mac?

I was so excited when iPhoto for the iPad was released.  The ability to caption photos while on the road was something I'd been waiting for since the first iPad was released.  I just returned from a 3 week trip to Africa and had carefully titled each photo when I transferred it from the camera to the iPad.  When I got home I then copied the iPad photos to my iMac and found none of the titles were transferred.  Bit disappointed at this, as now I have to go thru about 2000 photos and retitle them.  At least I have the correct names for all the birds, etc. on the iPad, so have a reference, but still a big waste of time.

As you have discovered iPhoto for iOS and iPhoto on your Mac are not exactly the same. Each application has its own set of features.
As far as I know there is no way to sync the captions to your Mac from your iPad. You can suggest this feature by leaving feedback to Aple here

  • IPhoto iOS workflow help

I have an iMac with Lion and iPhoto 11 (iLife 11) on. I also have an iPad 2, and now iPhoto for iOS.
So when I bought iPhoto iOS I thought what it would be would be an extension of iPhoto 11 on my iMac. What I mean is to help me edit, organise, fix my photos without being tied to my iMac.
So I thought the premise would be to sync some photos from my iMac to my iPad for on the go, do what I wanted with them, tag them, edit them, fix red eye, label them etc etc and then sync/copy back to my iMac for saving in my iPhoto library.
So I'm a little confused. What is it for, or how can I do the above? Surely lots of people want to do this sort of thing? I understand that photos taken on the iPad or iPhone via photo stream/iCloud could be edited, but ultimately they would want syncing back to the "home ship" of a Mac for use/backing up on a iPhoto library?
    Cheers

I think we all got caught in some euphoria after watching the iPhoto for iOS demo at the new iPad event last week. It all looked so slick. But it seems, and the MacWorld review stated it first, that iPhoto for iOS is a hobbyist app that allows someone to work with a few photos albums on their iPad or iPhone and share them to social media. It is definitely not an app that even a dedicated photographer would use let alone a semi pro or pro. And as we are finding out iPhoto for iOS definitely does not work with the Mac version.
I purchased iPhoto the day it w released but should have waited until I read some of the posts here in this forum. I used iPhoto a lot the first few days it was out, and pretty much tried every feature it had. But now that a week has gone by I've gone back to the app I depended on before iPhoto for iOS. That app is PhotoForge2.

  • Showing photos with Front Row without iPhoto

I love Apple, but frankly I cannot stand iPhoto. With the 2011 release, I tried another time to use it but trashed it a couple hours after.
I have all my picture simply into the Finder, inside a Dropbox folder which keeps them in sync amongst several macs of mine.
So I would like to know whether there is a way to use Front Row to show pictures without using iPhoto.
The best way for me would be to access directly the Finder or the file system. But I could also evalueate using other software, as long as they automatically sync their library with the content of the file system.
Any hint / idea / help?
I had thought of making a movie with the pictures, but that would be too unconfortable...
    Thank you.

    Hi,
I have got the same problem, i used to see the my pictures from all the events in the iphoto, but i think after some SL update i can only hear the slideshow music but no pictures.
I don't exactly remember when front row broke down because i do not use it regularly to watch pictures, i only use it to watch movie trailers, which still works fine.
    Hope someone can help.
    Cheers

  • Will iPhoto 6 support importing a library?

I couldn't find anything on the site about it. iPhoto Library Manager will do merges in iPhoto 5, so I can merge first and them upgrade, but it would be quite encouraging if Apple has finally fixed the merge problem.
250,000 images. That's what iPhoto ought to have supported in version 3. Better late than never!

Astoundingly, iPhoto 6 is yet another release omitting the ability to import, merge, or combine a photo Library.

  • IPhoto Slideshows dont work

Hi. I am new to Apple. I bought a iMac couple of days ago. It did a bunch of updates on first time startup including to iPhoto. When i launched iPhoto and imported my SD card, it pulled in some photos. However, whenever i try to launch a slideshow, the screen "blinks" and return to iPhoto. I never see any slideshow. How do i fix this? I have already tried creating new library but that doesn't help. So far, its been a poor first impression :-(
    Thanks,
    Prateek
    OS X 10.7.2
    iPhoto 11 - 9.2 (626)

I should have mentioned - after making the post above, I checked the logs in console and it seems iPhoto theme database was missing. I solved the issue by uninstalling and reinstalling iPhoto. Post that, Apple released one more update to iPhoto which screwed iPhoto again - whenever I launched iPhoto thereafter, I would see the beachball of death for a minute or so before iPhoto finally launched. Solved again by uninstalling and reinstalling iPhoto :-/
As a new Mac owner, I still cant get over the fact that how can something that was supposed to "just work" have this issue in a new iMac. Maybe its simply the difference between tourism and immigration!

  • Where do I find information on how to use all the features of iPhoto on the iMac?

I was told that iphoto  would be easy to use on IMac but I am not finding that true.  Is there a guide to how to use Iphoto?  Transferring photos from my external drive to iphoto is not working as I would expect.  It imports them to a new "last import" and not to the folder I want.  I am frustrated and can't find information that is helpful.  help window only gives me connections I'm not looking for.  I'm not seeming to ask the right questions.  Can't even find the category I'm looking for.  Is there a guide somewhere that I don't know about?

There's also this popular book: Amazon.com: iPhoto: The Missing Manual: 2014 release, covers iPhoto 9.5 for Mac and 2.0 for iOS (Missing Manuals) (9781491947319): David Pogue, Lesa Snider: Books

  • HELP!  24,700 photos - can I/should I merge iPhoto libraries?

I've been using iPhoto Buddy for a couple of years now to manage 3 different iPhoto libraries. I have coming up on 25,000 photos going back to 96 with my first digital camera. This has become a real pain switching libraries. Also - it limits how I can distribute the content (i.e. AppleTV/iTunes will only look at one library) I seperated them a while back because iPhoto wasn't stable enough to handle too many pictures in a single library without being prone to crashes.
I know nobody really knows if iPhoto 8 will help in this area (as I do plan to soon get a new 24" iMac)... but in general, is there any way to merge all 3 libraries and preserve keywords, film rolls, etc?

Apple deleted (record time!) my post on the merge topic, see the text below. (I omitted a few lines that might have pushed Apple's hypervigilant complaint monitoring team over the line, the full text is on "Gordon's Tech".
I spent some time over lunch with iPhoto 7. It's a good improvement and well worth what I paid to buy a copy. There is NO SUPPORT for library merging, but the .Mac support is better. You may be able to publish albums to .Mac and then import at the album level. Obviously, this is not satisfactory.
In my post below I comment on iPhoto Library Manager, an app I greatly appreciate and admire but which does not meet my requirements completely. I think Apple's unofficial answer is "buy Aperture", but you should know Aperture does not allow you to edit date metadata (so you can't sort scans, for example).
You're traveling with your MacBook. Organizing photos, adding metadata, creating albums, slideshows, etc. You get home. You want to import your travel library to the main library, preserving ALL the versions and metadata.
You have just married the Mac Geek of your dreams. You need to merge Libraries into the shared folder (which can't be shared over a network, but let's just ignore that). How do you do that?
You created and used separate Libraries back with iPhoto bogged down at 2000 images. Now you want to combine them, preserving version relationships, album relationships, descriptions, titles, keywords, roll information, photo books, slideshows, etc, etc.
Yes, I know about iPhoto Library Manager. I license and use it. It does miracles with Apple's limited merge support, but some metadata is lost. I also had so many issues with earlier version merges that, even though I use it all the time, I'm gun-shy. Sorry, merging Libraries is very complex. It's hard to believe that anyone but Apple can do it safely.
iLife 2008 (iPhoto 7) is the fourth release in a row to disappoint those of us asking for Library management....

  • Final Cut Express and iPhoto

I have a large FCE project that uses photos that are inside of an iPhoto Library version 5.0.4 which is a PPC application requiring me to boot into an external drive containing OS 10.6.  The next higher version of iPhoto on my computer is version 8.1.2 which puts all of the photos into a package where  I assume that FCE will no longer be able to access the photos.
    (1) Is my assumption correct?
    (2) If so, is there a Universal version of iPhoto below version 8 that does not use a “package” for storing everything, that is, the photos will be visible in the Finder?

Hi Martin. Thanks for the response.
    MartinR wrote:
    1) ...
For what it's worth, FCE has never been able to directly access the iPhoto Library.   At present, you must be importing individual images directly from the iPhoto library's internal folders, not actually from the Library itself (as iMovie can do).  You can do this because the folders & files are visible to the Finder and hence also FCE.
Yes, I understand that. FCE is actually "pointing" to the photos that are in the Finder folders created by iPhoto. However, i did not import the photos from the Finder. I dragged them from the iPhoto display window into the FCE Browser (and, from the browser to the Timeline). If I ask FCE to show the location of a specific photo, it will open the finder window containing that photo.
The advantage to using iPhoto, as I see it, is the organization of the photos that I would lose by exporting them to a single location and reconnecting with FCE.
    2) iPhoto 6 (the first Universal release) still had a Finder-accessible iPhoto Library *BUT* the Library structure is significantly different from iPhoto 5, so if you were to upgrade, don't be surprised if FCE considers the photos to have gone offline and you will have to reconnect media.
That's interesting. Could you explain further about the structure difference between 5 & 6?

  • Any free updates to iPhoto 2? How to get later version?

I've got a 3-year-old laptop with iPhoto 2 on it. I am now interested (finally!) in using it, and see that it's up to version 6. I don't need any of the other stuff in iLife 6, but shouldn't iPhoto be updated like iTunes is (with System Updater) at least to a version prior to the major pay upgrade? I want a version that has smart albums. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the deal is with iPhoto updates? Thanks!

but shouldn't iPhoto be updated like iTunes is (with System Updater)
at least to a version prior to the major pay upgrade?
It was. Version 2.0.1 is the update (and it's available from Software Update when applicable) to the last free version prior to the major pay upgrade. iPhoto 3 was never publicly released, and version 4 was the first "pay upgrade".

  • When I create a new album, why does iPhoto 11 separate pictures into untitled albums?

When creating a new album, why does iphoto 11 separate pictures into untitled albums?  I want all designated photos in the album i created..

I'm guessing you're missing the album in the left hand pane by just a bit and thus creating new albums for each of the photo you're dragging.  Make sure the album is highlighted as in this screenshot (iPhoto 9.4.2) before releasing:
A sure file way to get an album with the photos is to select the photos again and use the File ➙ New Album menu option
and that will produce a new album with the photos that were selected.
