IPhoto "09 Won't Delete Photos

I'm using iPhoto '09 and backing everything to Time Machine and to DVD discs. I'm trying to clear some space on my computer's hard drive by deleting old, backed up, photos.
I moved them to the iPhoto trash and emptied it. But the "ghosts" of past events are still there and the Library still reads at a little over 9GB.
When I say "ghosts" I mean that the events are still there but appear empty until I scroll then the images are visible while scrolling but not at any other time.
I tried dragging them to the trash again and emptying it again but that makes iPhoto unresponsive.
Why are the images still there and how do I delete them?

The images you see are simply cached data.
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

They are on the phone. I import them as usual, and then select to delete them off the phone. Then iPhoto says "deleting" but then the photos never come off of the phone.

  • IPhoto '09 trouble with deleting photos

I have a large amount of photos on iphoto. (13,000+) I am attempting to take them off.To make sure I have backups I first put them onto an external drive and also burn CD or DVDs. For some of my photos this has been successful. For a majority of them when I have backed up my photos satisfactorily I DELETE THEM by sending them to iphoto trash. I then empty the trash. The photos are gone. The number of photos in my iphoto drop. (My goal). When I close iphoto and come back a while later the photos I have deleted reappear and then number is high again. This has happened to several groups of photos. iPhoto won't delete them either in the iphoto trash or the regular trash. I have tried putting only 100 photos at a time in the trash. This didn't make any difference. WHAT SHOULD I DO to get rid of these photos so I can make more space iphoto? Why would they show up back in the library when they were deleted in the iphoto trash?????

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Because your database has been damaged.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • HT201269 Will my photos from my iPhone stay on my iPhoto when i click delete photos from phone?

I need more memory on my iPhone and want to turn off photo stream but i already have some photos saved on my macbook pro's iphoto and i was hoping that if i turn it off and continue to save my photos on iphoto if it won't delete the photos on iphoto that i have already and just add the ones that it doesn't have? I really have sentimental photos that are filled with memories and am worried that my pictures will be deleted.
Please anyone with any knowledge of this PLEASE HELP!
    Thank you!

Turn photo stream off. Import all your photos to a file on your computer. Now whatever you delete on your phone will still be on your computer.
Just dont sync those folders back to your phone or you will put them all back on your phone. And if you sync empty folders from phone to computer or vice versa you will clean out your phones pictures.
what I recommend is once the pictures are on a file on your computer, copy and paste them all to a usb thumb drive. viola, no lost pics

  • In Iphoto, How can I delete photos on my iphone that have already been imported?

I've just spent over the hour on the phone with my sister (who has a law degree, I have an engineering degree), and we could not figure out how to delete photos from our iphones that have already been imported into Iphoto.  I thought Apple was the company that made things easier???  This is a nightmare.
    The way it should work:
    - Launch iPhoto
    - Stand on iPhone (Under Devices)
    - Select photo to delete (under Already Imported)
    - Right-Click Delete (or Send to Trash, or Something)
Obviously we are not thinking like Apple thinks...does anyone know how to do this, or are these programs as crap as they seem and you have to go back to your iphone and select each photo one at a time (all several thousands of them).
Don't even get me started on how messed up my photo libraries have become now that I have (fully) switch over to Apple.
By the way, I like my Mac for everything else...but its photo capabilities suck.

Thanks, I was hoping for something a little more selective that I could do from my computer, but I think this is helpful.
Maybe the best approach to get this under control is:
    - Import all photos into iphoto
    - Delete all photos per your suggestion
    - Selectivly sync the photos you want put back on your phone
Thanks again, I didn't know this and is a helpful trick!
P.S. I still wouldn't mind finding a way to selectively delete files that are on my iphone from my computer.  (In Windows, you can go to My Computer -> Iphone, open the folder and delete what you want).

  • Why does iPhoto keep copies of deleted photos?

I recently purchased Photoshop Elements 10.  When I imported photos from iPhoto (about 15,000 images) into the PSE organizer, it imported a large number of photos that I had deleted from iPhoto, in some cases months ago.  When I searched in the iPhoto library, sure enough, there were saved masters of all the photos I had thought gone forever.
I understand perfectly well why iPhoto keeps masters of all the photos in the library, so that edits can be reverted etc.  That's not my question.  I want to know why it keeps masters of photos I deleted?  I deleted those pictures for a reason, and I wasn't happy when Photoshop imported all the old blurry shots, headless subjects and duplicates that I thought were long gone.
Is there any safe way to make iPhoto delete photos for real, as in no longer stored anywhere on the hard drive?  Would rebuilding the library do that?
Yes, I emptied the iPhoto trash bin.
No, I've never altered anything in the iPhoto library using Finder, and am very reluctant to allow any third-party software to do so.  Heard too many horror stories.
I'm currently using iPhoto '11, version 9.2.1, if it matters, but some of these deleted photos have been carried along through at least one major iPhoto update.
    Any help would be appreciated.

iPhoto 11 requires that you empty the iPhoto trash and the System Trash as well.
Other than that, this would be a symptom of a damaged database. Assuming this to be the case:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhone & iPhoto conspired against me: Deleted photos

    Hey All,
I have Mountain Lion (**** noise) and wanted to free up some space on my iphone so I selected some photos and imported them to iphoto. In a DUMB move I opted to "delete photos on your iphone?" Now it said that he photos I imported are not in recognizable formats. Moreover, I don't see them in my iphoto anymore. I did not backup to the icloud or itunes backup recently.
Is there any way to get these photos back? Did they simply trash to nothingness or is there any way to find them on the iphone? HELP!!!!
Ps. I tried "Wondershare Dr. Fone" backup program, but that didn't find any of the trashed photos.
    I have an iphone 4s.

  • Iphone 6 won't delete photos

I restored my iPhone 6 thru iTunes from my iMac (as my iPhone 3G became useless) Now I  cannot delete photos from my iPhone 6 (which were transferred from iPhobe 3G). Any help please?

    Hello joemalta,
It may be that these photos were synced via iTunes, and, as such, can be deleted from your iPhone by deselecting the option to sync photos.
To delete synced photos and videos from your device
In iTunes, click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.)
Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Note: To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
    Click Apply.

  • IPhoto 11 won't print photos as cropped

I have an album of photos that I've cropped to specific sizes to fit a collage frame.  iPhoto will not print the photos as I've cropped them.  It insists on scaling (and often re-cropping) them to fit the paper I'm printing on.  How do I force iPhoto to print them as cropped?
Setting a photo size doesn't work because then iPhoto zooms in on the already cropped photo and re-crops.  It also a pain, because then I'd have to print the photos in batches, being sure that I selected all the photos I cropped to a specific size for each batch.
    Ray

First crop your photo to 3x3:
In the Print window select the paper size (in this example it's 4x6) and a custom print size of 3x3. This is what you'll get, a 3x3 photo on a 4x6 paper size.  You can select any paper size you'd like:
If you select a large paper size you can print multiple 3x3 photos on the same page:

  • IPhoto won't delete photos from camera after importing. It used to....

Hello...anybody have any thoughts on this issue? I always check the 'delete after importing' option when connecting camera and importing new photos. Recently, the photos have remained on the camera and I have to delete pictures from my camera manually instead of iPhoto doing this. It seems that after I upgraded to OS X 10.5 I noticed this issue. Needless to say if I forget to delete from the camera, iPhoto wants to import the old photos when I have new pics to import. Thanks for any help.
    Camera is an Olympus SLR.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
We've seen occasional reports of this with 10.5. Start with the troubleshooting basics:
    1. Repair Permissions using Disk Utility
    2. Delete the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. You'll need to reset your User options afterwards.
    3. Create a new account (systempreferences -> accounts) and see if the problem is repeated there. If it is, then a re-install of the app might be indicated. If it's not, then it's likely the app is okay and the problem is something in the main account.
That said, experienced users do not recommend letting iPhoto delete the pics from your card. If there has been a problem with the transfer you won't know about it until after the erase is complete. It's a couple of seconds work to reformat the card using your camera.

  • IPhoto 11 won't import photo from iPhone 5 on new MBP

Brand new MacBookPro out of box experience -- picked up the laptop yesterday.  Everything seems to work until I get to iPhoto (as usual).  Plugged in my iPhone 5 and tried to import photos.  Error -- Unreadable Files: 1   IMG_0434.JPG.   Ok...  Not sure what's wrong but when I go back to import photos there are now fewer to import.   Tried again.  Same error.  Even fewer photos to import again.  Tried to find the photo on the iPhone but despite the confusing array of presentation options there is no way to simply find one by file name.  And hence no way to delete the offending photo.  Or to import it.
Similarly there appear to be two movies to be imported but iPhoto reports "Error downloading image.  iPhoto cannot import your photos because there was a problem downloading an image."  Not helpful.  And again no way to remove the offending files.  No way to find them on the iPhone.  No way to delete them through iPhoto.
Oh, and is there still not any way to turn off the stupid events stuff?  This just causes more confusion for me when trying to enjoy my photos.  Alternatively can I import photos from my iPhone using another app and move them directly to the file system and eliminate iPhoto from my workflow altogether???

Can you access these images and movies with Image Capture (in the Applications Folder) ?

  • IPhoto'09 won't import photos correctly

Settings: All photos and iPhoto library are on an external HD (I use a NAS); importing worked fine (okay much too slow but I axperienced if you don't do things the Apple way it is always like this) since yesterday.
The issue is now. When I import photos from a directory on the external HD, it does so but in the preview mode of iPhoto shows for all images the same thumbnail. If I click on the thumbnail it shows the correct pictures and also I can work with the photos etc. But I can't mark any foto as key photo nor export the pictures to MobileMe (it the only exports one photo as it says there is only one photo within that event). It doesn't matter wich photos I try to import it is always the same.
Furthermore with faces I can try and mark many faces as I want or accept the suggested faces (that are already in the faces database) but it seems not to save them, because when I quit iPhoto and start it again all is back to where it was before....
Any idea other then flushing the whole thing down the toilet and start over again?

Simply, the Library needs to sit on an appropriately formatted disk. iPhoto has no cross platform ability, nor does it claim any.
You can run a Referenced Library where the Original Photos can be stored where you want, and the Library can be on your internal HD, for instance.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.

  • IPhoto '08 won't recognize photo DB

Before I updated my macbook to mountain lion I used time machine to back everything up.  I did the OS install, then reinstalled iPhoto '08 and the iPhoto library onto the macbook.  Now iPhoto opens fine, but it says there are no photos.  I can't figure out how to either import the photos, or make iPhoto recognize the database.  It's in my 'photos' folder.  It's about 10GB in size, so I know that's the right DB.
I tried importing it, clicking and dragging it onto the iPhoto window, and repairing.  All to no avail.  Does anyone have any idea as to what's wrong?  Thanks.

It imports photos fine, even w/out creating a new library.  All seems well, except for the fact that it won't recognize that photo library.
When I held the option key down, it asked me if I wanted to create or choose a library.  I selected "choose", it went right to my iPhoto Library that has my pics, I chose "open", then it goes to the iPhoto window and does not open/import my pics.  It only shows the one or two pics that I manually imported a moment ago.

  • IPhoto crashed during transfer, deleted photos from my iPhone and I can't find them anywhere. :( ^

I was transfering over 4k photos and videos from my iPhone to my iPhoto.
It said it was done and asked my if I wanted to deleted the files. I deleted, once I needed space on my iPhone. The thing is, it took a lot of time deleting untill the crash message appeared.
iPhoto deleted over 2k photos from my phone, I open the iPhoto now and it doesn't show me a single photo.
When I "get info" on the library it says the file has over 10gb, where are these photos? What do I do now ?
I tryed the cmd+option and restoring or whatever, didn't work, and now the "faces" keeps searching for something.
    someone please heeeellp.
    thanks

When you delete any data from your phone that you are syncing with iCloud, it deletes it from iCloud.  When you deleted the contacts from your phone, they were deleted from your iCloud account.
Did you back up your phone while you still had that contacts on it, or do you have your contacts backed up anywhere else?

  • Z30 won't delete photos or move photo files to other folder

O/S was updated to 10.3.1.2582 today.  Since the update I can no longer delete or move photos.
I've tried deleting single photos as well as multiple photos and I've tried moving single photos and multiple photos to another album.
When I try to delete I get a popup that says:  Delete Failed - This item(s) could not be deleted
    Tried restarting device already...didn't work
    Please advise

I am wondering if something went wrong with the SD card. This would be a coincidence. Remove the SD card and read it with an SD card reader on a PC.
Another idea would be to remove and re-insert the SD card. Then reboot the phone before doing the above...
