IPhoto 09no thumbnails in exported photos
I just upgraded to iPhoto 09, and find that exported photos no longer have the thumbnail in their EXIF data. Help?!
I've just tried to duplicate the problem with the iPhoto 8.1.2 library and app and have been unable.
Try this: launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists. If the problem persists in the test library do the following: make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If the new library preserves the thumbnail on exported photos then your current library is damaged. In that case make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Is ILife 11 the current version today? (May 2014). ILife 11 on Amazon appears to be 3+ yrs old?
When searching for ILife 11 on the Apple Store, I am directed to a separate purchase of Iphoto version 9.
Somewhat confusing, Apple is always so clear with these things.
The goal is to upgrade my Iphoto 8.2.1 to Iphoto 11.
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
I understand ILife is the way to fix it.
Thanks! The current version of iPhoto is iPhoto 9.5.1., and it is the latest version of iPhoto '11.
If you are running Mavericks 10.9.2, you can buy iPhoto 9.5.1 from the AppStore - it is the currently sold version.
The iLife bundle is called iLife '11, and the iPhot version in iLife '11 is iPhoto 9.x.x. - that is confusing allright
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
While it is certainly useful to upgrade to the current iPhoto version to be fully compatible with MacOs X 10.9.2, there may be a differnet reason for the crashes. Is there an error message with the crashes? When did these start? Did you import new photos or videos? Install other software? -
IPhoto hangs when you export photos
Installed OSX 10.9.2 yesterday; now, when I try to export photos from iPhoto, iPhoto hangs. This is the first part of the error message, it goes on for pages:

Anybody have any ideas? This happens when I try a selection of photos or just one. There seems to be a bug with iPhoto 8.1.2 and Mavericks 10.9.2 on some machines. Report your problem to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. However, since iPhoto is up to 9.5.1 now I doubt if there will be any effort put in by Apple for that version of iPhoto.
You can upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 via the App Store but it will be a paid upgrade.

IPhoto 8.1.2 exports photos but not movies
Running iPhoto 8.1.2 and it will not export my iphone movies (or any movies for that matter). I export photos just fine. When I click File->Export nothing happens.
I restarted my computer, tried it again, and the thinking wheel spun for about thirty seconds and nothing happened. Now nothing happens at all when I try and export a movie (no dialogue box, etc.)
I tried updating software. I tried repairing disk permissions. No luck.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks for the help.Select one of the affected videos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. Go Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder Window should open with the file selected.
Does it? -

Hi,
Yesterday I went to upload a photo to Facebook from my iphoto and it said I had no network connection. I did/do have internet connection and it's still not working today !
I have been able to do this in the past. Any tips why this has stopped and what I can do? My computer is only 3 weeks old !!! All my udates are up to date as well.Right click on one of the photos and reveal in finder - what happens?
Is there any change a file with the same name as you are trying to create in the location your are exporting to (if so export to a new folder)

IPhoto 9.6 not exporting photo descriptions
After changing image descriptions as desired, then selecting File>Export>Include: Title and keywords, the image descriptions fail to be exported (default camera description "OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA" retained). Title and keywords are exported; descriptions are not.
This is new problem with new Macbook up to date running 10.10.2.
I have submitted feedback to Apple via iPhoto>Provide iPhoto Feedback.
But wondering if others are having this issue.
And if I discover a resolution then I shall post it here. How are you checking for the descriptions?
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result. -

Why is iphoto having trouble with rotating photos all of a sudden?
i've been using iphoto for a few years. suddenly it un-rotated all of my auto-rotated photos (which screwed up all of my face tags) and now when i upload new photos, if they auto-rotate during the upload they appear in the preview of a whole event, but if i double-click to see a vertical photo, or try to do a slideshow, i get the triangle with an exclamation point in it, indicating that something's wrong with the file. is anyone else having this trouble? or have any idea what to do?
thanks...I've never used the Flickr feature so don't know if that as any bearing on the problem. if you're satisfied with the newly "fixed" library you can delete the copy of the original library that you made.
However, since you're having problems with rotated photos you might try this and see if the new library has the rotated photos displayed correctly:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
2. Open the library package like this.
3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
If the rotated photos display correctly in this new library then the problem lies with the orther libraries being damages somehow. You may want to stay with the new library even though the projects, i.e. books, etc. and keywords are lost.
If you have a lot of keywords in your current library and want to move them to the new library you can by doing this:
1 - open the old library and select one photo.
2 - type Command+K to brinb up the keyword pane.
3 - click on all of the keywords that are not blue so that all of the keywords are blue.
4 - export that photo to the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option. Select Kind=JPEG and check the two check boxes regarding keywords, locations, etc.
5 - open the new library with iPhoto and import the exported photo from the Desktop. That will bring in all of the keywords so that you don't have to recereate them one by one in the new library. -
Can't export photos from iPhoto
MacBook Pro OS X 10.9.4 and iPhoto 8.1.2
I'm trying to export photos from my iPhoto to a folder on my desktop - I've always been able to do this by just dragging and dropping the thumbnail from iphoto onto my desktop, but that no longer works. When I try to drag/drop, I get a little window that says "Preparing to copy to desktop" and a scrolling status bar that will scroll infinitely without any progress. I can't cancel this process, and have to either restart my computer or kill all Finder operations in Terminal to stop it.
When I try to File > Export, iPhoto crashes. Error message is below. Any ideas on how to solve this problem?

IPhoto 6 solution to missing photos in edit/book view when thumbnail shows
Hi all, since this seems to be quite wide spread with iPhoto 6 users, I thought I'd make sure that you all get the solution that seems to work for the following:
Problem: iPhoto 6 does not open your photo for editting but you can still see it's thumbnail, or the photo is not shown in a book but it does show its thumbnail.
Cause: at this stage, I don't know for certain but I have a feeling it is to do with other applications changing the default opening app for images (perhaps Adobe software).
Solution:
1) In Finder, click File, New Smart folder and set the following options:
Folder 'iPhoto Library', Kind: Images, Size: Greater than 100KB
2) Then, when search has found all your images, select them all and press the 'Get Info' button.
3) Select 'Open with' and change it to 'Preview'. This may take a while if you have a lot of photos but let it finish.
4) Then click 'Change All...' and select yes.
That's it. Now open iPhoto and it should all work ok.(hopefully!).I did that a couple of days ago. But after I while the problem re-appeared. I used Photoshop for editing, so probably that is one of the issues.
So after several times of trying this solution, I decided to go the hard way and export the corrupted files to the desktops, delete them from iphoto, and re-import them back. That seems to do the job...Frustrating, I know, but so far effective -
Image orientation just fine in thumbnails on iphoto, not so when exporting
trying to export photos from iphoto so a windows-based machine can view the images. though I've rotated some images in iphoto to appear in proper orientation, when I export the images they revert to their pre-rotated status.
what do i do?Earlier versions placed Export under the Share menu. It was moved to the File menu in more recent versions.
iPhoto keeps up to 3 versions of each photo in your library. The original file is always preserved. You can right-click (Control-click) and Revert to original at any time. There is a small thumbnail, created for displaying your library efficiently. Finally, when you edit (including rotate) a photo, the modified version is stored in the library, and the thumbnail is updated to reflect the edited photo. The library contains a database file which stores the information about your albums, titles, key words, slideshows, etc. That file also keeps track of the 3 photo versions. A slight corruption in the database file may cause iPhoto to forget about the edited file, and (in your case) export the original instead. Hopefully the library rebuild will set it straight.
Another cause of this type of problem is user tampering in the iPhoto Library folder. If you move, rename, or otherwise change the edited file directly inside the iPhoto Library folder (from the Finder or other application), iPhoto will lose track of it. It's best to stay out of the library folder altogether and access your photos via the iPhoto application.

Exporting photos to non-iPhoto app
Hey all,
I've been searching the net for a while, but haven't found a clear answer to my question.
My girlfriends computer needs a re-format with installation of Snow Leopard and therefore I was to backup everything which is pretty straight forward. However, iPhoto isn't!
She iPhoto version 7.1.5 and SL comes with iPhoto 9! So if I want to make a backup, will that be compatible with the newer version? And in that case, how should I proceed? Simply copy the folder over and let the new version open the old library? Or?
In any case I would prefer to use Lightroom or something else, as it's much better and easier to work with when it comes to file structure and future backup. Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks a lot, I really need the help
Kristian*How to do it:*
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
*What Happens:*
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
*Some things to consider:*
1. Importing and deleting pics are more complex procedures. You have to to put the files where they will be stored before importing them. When you delete them you'll need to remove the files from the HD yourself.
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
4. Because iPhoto has no tools for managing Referenced Files, if, for some reason, the path to the photos changes then you could find yourself resolving aliases for +each photo in the Library+ one by one.
My own opinion:
I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organiser
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
*For Users of 10.5 and later*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
*For users of 10.4 and later* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
For users of 10.6 and later:
You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu. Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and later:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
*If you want to use a different Photo Editor*
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.

IPhoto 11: Thumbnails show as normal, but photos are blank
Hello everyone. I have a problem that I bet is common, but I'm not seeing it here in the discussions, maybe from people describing it as different things.
I just opened iPhoto 11 to access some photos, went through the thumbnails, found the ones I wanted, clicked...and I get a black screen. Same for ALL the photos I've tried.
I know there have been many people with problems after upgrading to iPhoto 11, but I have had it for some time without issues, in fact the most recent photos I'd imported into the program were a month ago, when it seemed to be working normally.
I made a backup copy of my iPhoto Library, and used two of the 'rebuild' functions, 'Repair the iPhoto Library Database' and 'Examine and Repair the iPhoto Library file permissions' but the problem is still there.
Will likely go ahead with the rest of the 'Rebuild' functions but would welcome some knowledgeable advice.
Thanks in advance!Yesterday I d/led the demo version of iPhoto Library Manager, opened it, and it immediately 'found' the Library and everything displayed correctly--within iPLM.
Curious if that would carry over to iPhoto itself, I then opened it and...it did. Then I closed iPLM and iPhoto, reopened the latter by itself, and again it was fine. 24 hrs later it all seems back to normal.
I have no idea how iPhoto Library Manager works but it solved this problem. -
