IPhoto'11 - a disappointment.

hello all!
even though i use iPhoto privately, i have some experience in organizing of and working with a large amount of photos in my job. also i would call myself as a rather advanced computer user.
recently i got this new macbook pro and decided to take th offer of apple to buy iLife '11 as a chaep update to preinstalles iLife '09. that was a mistake.
first of all it is very slow and transforms your whole iPhoto library into an iPhoto '11 library, that is not backward compatible. uff!
if i press control-I the common info shortcut i get useless information about tags, faces and places, that take ages to load. adn take a lot of space of the screen.
if i want to print a picture, that was taken in "wide" mode in the format that it was taken (leaving a white border on top an botton) that is simply not possible. had to copy it to desktop and print from preview. good concept, apple!
and another thing: when i insert my sd card (16GB) that i do not empty everytime for backup reasons - i guess i'm not the only one in the world who does that - iPhoto has to read every single picture of the 2000 something and is not able to skip the pictures that were already imported previously into iphoto before doing this. so a typical procedure is: waiting 10minutes for iPhoto, importing with the option "do not import pictures that were already imported" enabled, inding all the pictures that you deleted imported again - nice!
i came to copying the hand-selected pictures to desktop first an then importing them to iPhoto (also very much in accordance with iPhoto's concept of not having to touch anything internal) as the better of two bad soluions.
so i dont suggest anyone to get iPhoto'11, it is not a bit better/faster/more beatiful that its predecessor and really shook my trust in apple to constantly improve things, what still is definitely true with iTunes, th OS in generall, Preview and all the little things. i will stop using iPhoto as soon as possible!
florian
ps. if its all my mistake/inflexibility/wanting the wrong thing i honestly apologize, but my suspicion is also that apple wants to decrease quality of iPhoto to sell more of Aperture. is this thing better?

i think it is a bit about the "professionality" that i would have liked to feel in iPhoto,
But iPhoto is not an Professional app. It's aimed at the folks with a point and shoot or even a phone camera who want to have easy uploading to Facebook, Flickr and emailing so that they can share their pics quick with their pals and the new baby's grandparents. That's the target audience. And that's most photographers. So, in iPhoto, it's been a while since printing has been warmed over - why, because these folks hardly ever print.
Everything after that - books, cards, slideshows - are designed around fixed templates. This means the user has to make less choices and so can create something that looks well and do it very quickly.
for me the whole mac world used to be "cool" in a sense that somebody knowing about things (design in that case) would suggest good things and leave bad things (like common, cheap, amateur-like propositions) out of the system.
Well, taste is a curious thing. I find your disdain for capital letters at the start of sentences to be lazy at best and rude at worst. I'm sure you have a good reason for writing that way. Maybe your shift key s broken. So, I get over it. Similarly with iPhoto you can ignore and not use any of the bits you dislike. Want to make a slideshow that uses no template? Use another app - and guess what... they all integrate with iPhoto. Don't like the book template? Make your own in Quark or InDesign and they integrate with iPhoto too.
Printing - as opposed to making a keepsake - like in every Mac app - is under the File menu. Advanced computer users would know that

  • How do I roll back to iphoto 08

I just upgraded to iphoto 09, so disappointed. How can I roll back to iphoto 08 using time machine backup? Thanks Alex

Export any photos you have imported wince installing iPhoto '09, Delete iPhoto '09 and all iPhoto receipts ("your harddrive" ==> library ==> receipts ==> ), install iPhoto '08 and go back in TM to your last iPhoto '08 library and restore it - any photos you have imported since the upgrade will not be there so import them from the export above

  • Is it possible to shuffle music from iTunes library in iPhoto?

When I look at a slide show of an album it always begins with the same song from iTunes. I know I can change that for each album. But what I would like to do is to choose the iTunes library so that the songs shuffle randomly in each album. What I mean is that if I start a slide show of a specific album it should start with a new song from iTunes each time. Is this possible?

This is a feature this is surprisingly missing from iPhoto.
Apple realizes the importance of shuffling music; they named a product after it. And it seems like it would be such an easy thing to add.
I fully expect this functionality in iPhoto, and am disappointed that it's not there.

  • Upgrading from iPhoto 5 to iPhoto 6

Well, my upgrade to iPhoto 6 was unsuccessful, and I lost all my photos stored with iPhoto 5 in the process. Based on all the troubles described in the forum, I'm beginning to suspect iPhoto is a disappointing program. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better, more satisfactory program?

    Day Lily
Perhaps if you explained how you upgraded, and why is was unsuccessful, and how you "lost" all your photos, we might be able to help you get back on the road.
What disk did you use to upgrade?
In what way was it unsuccessful? Do you still have v5? or did you manage to get v6 on your machine? Or do you have a working iPhoto at all?
Are your pics still on your HD - they should be in the Library folder in your pictures folder.
If the pics are still there, is there any sign of them in the iPhoto Window - blank squares where the pics should be, for instance, or it is a completely empty library?

  • Running iWork 9.03 on Lion

This is for all of you who long for the simplicity of "save/save" as well as control over what gets saved.  I uninstalled the iWork 9.1 and then ran the script provided by our French friend Koiening Yvan (Check his publicme for IWork09 uninstall zip file).  Then installed iWork 09 from my discs.  Then I updated it to version 9.0.3.  Everything is working fine so far.  Pages and Keynote both are running fine.  I don't do Numbers, so I can't help you there.  Generally speaking, I update my Apple stuff as a matter of course and am usually pleased with the upgrades.  There are always features I don't use (e.g. widgets & spaces), but the last iPhoto update was disappointing and this thing with Auto Save and Versions, while conceptually desirable, is in my view poorly implimented.  I hope this isn't a trend.
Many thanks to Yvan for the script!

    Thanks for the feedback.
I wish to add that you may download the updater 9.0.5 from my iDisk.
    For_iWork:iWork '09:iWork9Update5.dmg.zip
    You may apply it.
Version 9.0.5 behave flawlessly under Lion (and with this one you have the export to epub feature).

except this major point i must admit the quality is quite good , but a bick lack of quality control and a customer disapointed at the end.
On the internet site it is not possible to send it back. So apple doesn't want to take in account that they mail sometimes fail, and want to satisfy their customer, because you have no other choice that accepting it.

    Yes it is returnable.

  • IPhoto keeps quitting, constantly, very frustrating - losing a lot of work, time, and often having to redo editing work I have already done!! Disappointed!!

Really like iPhoto, and all the editing features, and use this program A LOT!
HOWEVER....exceptionally frustrating and disappointing that this means, when the program keeps, freezing, crashing and losing editing work I have done, that it is time consuming, takes a long time to do the basic editing I am doing, and very often lose, and have to redo eiditing I have already done.
It's a disappointment, seeing as I am such a Mac fan, and own a laptop, desktop, ipad, and iphone, and been an exclusive Mac user for 8years...
    Why such hectic bugs/program deficiencies....?
All software is up to date, I have the Lion OS X on all my devices/computers.
Dont know whats going on and if there is anything I can do, or is Apple doing something to work out these bugs....

    Hi Terence,
I see that you have a lot of experience with iPhoto. I wanted to chime in here and present that I am having this same exact issue. The context here is that I am on a shiny new MBP. Last vistage before the recent update. iPhoto is also driving me nuts, crashing frequently. It does it with my current libraries, with new test libraries that i have made after deleting pres, reinstallg, and restarting. I went to the apple store and we made a new user and a new library, for which I was able to make it crash. I have a photo that will sometimes make it crash, although it can successfully load after the app restarts, or if I completely redo everything. Even so, if you delete the pic and re-add, it does the same thing...but not every time. This is totally elusive. I am hesitant to resinstall the OS because 1) It's still got that new OS smell 2) iPhoto is the old app that shows any kind of trouble. Plus, iPhoto's shenanigans seem to be somewhat temporal, behaving differently every time. I've see a few posts about this on-line and I think it's rediculous that a pillar of the Apple ecosystem is so broken for so many people, with so little recourse. If you'd be willing to try and get to the root with me, it would be absolutely huge.
    Thanks.

  • Very disappointing why do I need a camera on my iPad to manage edit photos in new iPhoto app?

Very disappointing why do I need a camera on my iPad to manage edit photos in new iPhoto app?

That's just a visual differentiator so folks can easily tell if it will run on their machine. The difference is the RAM and processor in the iPad 2 and iPad (New). The camera has nothing to do with the physical requirements.

  • IPhoto 11 'dumbs down' emailing pics - anyone else disappointed?

The one command I used the most in iphoto was to email photos at one of the 4 sizes provided. I did this constantly and was able to title and label photos in my mail before sending. Now, having wasted a lot of money on the upgrade I see I no longer have that choice - it is some pre-decided "enhancement" size that just give a childish preview of pics in a folder.
The whole point of emailing a pic is to give the person emailed an instant look at the photos at the desired size. The untrained simply drag the pic into whatever app they want. Who is going to find the folder, open an app and look at the pics? It is too much work and too complicated for most.
Bad choice apple - a case of an upgrade offering much less that the previous version. I would like my money back. I will certainly give this 'dumbing down' upgrade a miss and advise every mac user I know to beware. Really disappointed, Michael

If you don't like the new ways that iPhoto handles emailing then you can access the old way with a small change in how you work:
    1. Drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Mail icon in the Dock.
    or
    2. Use the Photo browser in Mail - or any Media browser in the entire OS
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can then resize the image in the iPhoto Window
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
Finally, you can make a simple OS Service to to automate the procedure. For more on this have a read of this:

  • IPhoto book disappointment

I know there are many posts on this, but I can't resist adding to the list. I recently ordered my first hardbound photobook through iPhoto (I have printed a hardbound book in the past through the Sony imagestation and have been more satisfied than with this)
My first few tries w/ the Apple Photo Books were with the medium size softbound books were ok, especially considering the fact that they were pretty cheap.
This book was pretty expensive...over $95 by the time it was delivered to me. Now I grant you there were over 100 images and 70 pages in the book, but still, it was meant to be a token of thanks to my cousin, and I guess my expectations were high.
Most of the images were taken w/ my Nikon D50 and w/ minor post processing were very good images. I even had one of the images in the book printed by Kodak at 16x20 ! and it is FAR more sharp than anything in this book.
Colors are not bad, though many of the lower light images, which look great on my Dell 2005, turned out on the dark side in the book.
At first blush, and to someone who doesn't know how these can and should look, it may be fine...but I expectd more.
What do I do? give it back and try another vendor? Part of the reason for going w/ the mac was for the integrated approach to this type of activity.
BTW, I made sure all my settings match OldToad's setting... 300 dpi, etc.

Perhaps it is an issue of expectations. I saw an iPhoto book at a wedding and was entranced (never noticed that iPhoto option before). When my youngest daughter married last year, she and I created a big book so the guests could sign in on the photo pages (the yearbook idea). Not only did the Apple vendor do it very quickly (last summer), but the colors were very faithful.
I wouldn't mistake it for a pro photo book, but it seemed pretty cheap at $100 for a bound book with our photos in it. My sample size is only 2, so perhaps my expectations are modest? Does your monitor faithfully show colors and brightness as compared to prints generally?

  • Has anyone else been disappointed in their finished iPhoto book?

I experienced several problems with poor quality results in my iphoto book received this January. I created it on the latest Macbook Air, using iPhoto "11. The cover was shoddily finished, the pages were wrinkled as if the book were shipped while still damp, the captions were cut off at the bottom, the preview pdf did not match the printed book. It came fast but looked like a rush job. A replacement book was shipped with the mistakes corrected. However, the photos in the redo were washed out compared to the original. And I was charged for the replacement book! Support has been frustrating and ultimately useless. I have been fiercely loyal to Apple since I got my first Mac in 1986. In all that time I have experienced nothing short of perfection from Apple -- until January 2012. I
don't know what to think, or do.

Return the replacement and request that you be re-imbursed for the monies paid. If the book is not right then you don't pay for it.
We do see reports on here from time to time from people unhappy with the finished book. And that's what we advise.

  • Disappointed with Iphoto 09 crashing

I created a slideshow in Iphoto 09 and for some pics the screen goes black and then it crashes.
I never had this problem with Iphoto 08. I need to present this slideshow in less than a week.
    Getting frustrated,

    Post the Crash Log.
    It's at Home / Library / Logs / Crash-Reporter / iphoto.crash.log
Double click on the file and it will open in the Console. Copy and Paste it in here.

  • I tried to import my all photos from iphoto, but almost finishing, it close and do not finish. After it still closing unexpectedly. I lost all my work... i am too disappointed

I am photo lover and have more than 15 thousand of them in my macbook pro. but i would like to use the aperture 3 now. but it do not wanted to import the photos and now it still closing unexpectedly.

    Thigama,
Don't get too frustrated.  Aperture is great, and since you are willing to take the plunge, you will surely be rewarded once things start working correctly.
First, what work have you lost? It sounds like you were just waiting for Aperture to finish its initial import, in which case you didn't really lose anything.
How large is your iPhoto library?  How much free space is on the drive on which your Aperture library is stored?  When you imported your iPhoto library, did you choose 1) to copy the photos into Aperture, or 2) to "leave in their current location?"  If you copied into your Aperture library, you will need more than twice the amount of space that your iPhoto library takes.  Even if you choose to keep the photos in their current location, you will still need many gigs of free space.
Also, do you have any other "Pro" apps on your computer?  There has been (in the past) problems with Aperture when other applications are installed.

  • IPhoto update impossible after upgrading to Mountain Lion?

I upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion today and when I subsequently went into the iCloud settings I was surprised to learn my version (9.1.3) of iPhoto was not capable of supporting iCloud. The information stated if iPhoto had not been installed from the App Store, then one should go the the apple icon in the top left corner and select "Software Update" from there. When I do that, it is reported I do not have an update available. However, if I open iPhoto and check for an update from its menu, it indicates an update (two, actually) is available but when I click the "Open Software Update" button, I am directed back to the App Store where...no update available is the information provided.
I would really like to use iCloud Photo Stream and is one of the reasons I ponied up $20 to "upgrade" to Mountain Lion. Could someone tell me what I am doing wrong? I have been a MS/Windows user for 20+ years and this initial exposure to difficulties with the Mac OS is not what I expected.
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. The purpose of this test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Try the download while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
