Iphoto '11 book upload stops problem

I had the frustrating problem of iphoto '11 stopping during uploading of photo books and found a simple solution.  I left the process running overnight or during mornings and for 5 to 6 consecutive the process stopped midway and I found an error message.  Tried restarting the whole thing, rebooting, turning off everything else that was running, etc.  Same result.
I tried this and it has worked so far for 3 books in a row in the first try: I went into the System Preferences and extended the computer sleep time to "Never" and left the process running.
iphoto '11 version 9.1.3 / Mac OS X 10.6.7 / MacBook Pro

A more detailed explanation which confirms the same problem and fix can be found here:

I hope Apple is working on a fix since I expect they follow this forum. In the mean time it is nice to know we can utilize the expertise of users who frequent this forum.

  • IPhoto '08 Book upload errors with squid transparent proxy - tip

    Hi folks
I've just "solved" a problem I was having with iPhoto Book uploads. The solution may apply to other publishing products from iPhoto and possibly iDisk uploads too.
My firewall & proxy setup is basically Linux iptables redirecting all outbound http (port 80) connections to a dansguardian filter, which in turn is passed onto a squid instance running as a transparent proxy (oh, and there's a privoxy in this all too!). Yeah, OK, I know, slightly paranoid, but I don't want my children accidently browsing stuff I don't think they are old enough for yet!
Now I had the problem before with iPhoto '06 as well, but at the time just didn't have the time or inclination to figure out what the problem was, and just did the book order and upload from the office, where it went through without a problem. This time I decided to dig a bit and see what was happening. The clue that triggered off the solution was watching the part of the order process where the book data is uploaded. In my default setup, the upload bar would scream through to 100%, and then sit there for ages, before coming back with a connection error. Watching the network flashy lights on the NIC on the firewall though, it suddenly dawned on me that what was happening was that the upload was screaming through to the squid (as there was no outbound network activity from the firewall while this was happening) and then sitting there waiting for squid to pass it on to the Apple site (as shown by the outbound NIC activity light suddenly going bonkers once the uoload bar hit 100%).
So clearly there's a problem sending book orders via a squid proxy setup as a transparent proxy. It might also very well be dansguardian interfering and wanting to take the entire upload and checking it before passing it on to squid. I already have site exception setup for all apple.com urls though in dansguardian, so didn't think it would be that. I thought about dicking around with the squid acl's but didn't have the enthusiasm to spend half the day getting that working.
So what I did in the end was tail the squid logs to see what was being proxied whilst the book order was going on, and then dropped in 3 new rules in my iptables setup just before the redirect rule. Tried ordering the book again, and voila!
The three rules I inserted were:
    $IPTABLES -t nat -A PREROUTING -s ! 10.1.1.1 -p tcp -d mercury.apple.com -j ACCEPT
    $IPTABLES -t nat -A PREROUTING -s ! 10.1.1.1 -p tcp -d configuration.apple.com -j ACCEPT
    $IPTABLES -t nat -A PREROUTING -s ! 10.1.1.1 -p tcp -d publish.mac.com -j ACCEPT
The "-s ! 10.1.1.1" bit is obviously particular to my setup, as I wouldn't want connections from the router itself being proxied, so that may need to either be customised or left out altogether. These three rules are then immediately followed by the redirect:
    $IPTABLES -t nat -A PREROUTING -s ! 10.1.1.1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 8081
Hope that is of some help to someone out there!

  • IPhoto 09 Book and Crashing Problems

I've been running into significant problems while constructing a 100pg book within iPhoto 09 that came pre-installed on my macbook pro. To start, the issue seems to be only affiliated with the iphoto book function (calendars seem to work just fine).
    Here's what I'm experiencing:
I was in the process of creating a 100pg book. I had approximately 80 pages constructed. During my last session, I constructed the remaining 20 pages, and then began the process to submit the file for printing. It had significant issues suggesting that there were problems throughout my book. When submitting for printing, it indicated I had a problem and needed to resolve it before submission. At this point, looking through the book in iphoto appears to work absolutely fine with no exclamation points of any type.
As a troubleshooting step, I attempted to preview the file to a PDF. It had multiple errors and took a significant time to output because 20-or-so times, I had to click on a message indicating there was an error on a specific page.
So, continuing on, the file output with various problems. I then attempted to adjust the pages that had the problems (replacing photos, etc). During this process iphoto crashed. Upon reopening iphoto, I was unable to access the book at all - iphoto would simply crash.
In desperation, I restored the initial 80-page version. Now I've got that, and I certainly could go through the process of recreating the next 20 pages, but I wanted to verify that I wouldn't run into problems. In testing that, the crashing behavior is still present.
Next, I renamed the iphoto library and allowed iphoto to create a new and blank library. I readded the 5200 photos that I am sifting through for the book. Attempted to create a new book, added the 5200 photos, and then, without even putting an image on a page, tried to remove a photo from the book listings. At this point, it crashes. This is a new library, new file, new import, and same crash.
I've spent hours and hours and hours, and I'm no technological luddite. I am needing some solutions. Can anyone out there help me out?
If need be, I could provide a detailed error log that the crash produces, but as it's pages and pages of info, I thought I'd wait until someone asks me for it.
    Thanks for your insights.
    -Cody

1 - Apple does not have a problem - you do - this is a problem with your set up not with iPhoto
2 - this is a user to user forum so addressing Apple here has no value
3 - how are you previewing that fails - using the directions here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 ? How does the preview fail? BTW the fact that you can not create a preview is directly connected to your inability up upload and is connected to the problem with your system

  • Uploading custom pages to iPhoto photo books

I am trying to upload a custom page with photos and text to my iPhoto photo book. I am a digital scrapbooker.  But I need to know the exact size with bleed to make sure that the text and photos appear the way I have designed. Is it possible to find out the size of the photo books with bleeds?
I am using version 9.5.1 of iPhoto.

I've not seen that in iPhoto '08 - iPhoto '09 does have a thumbnail bug like that that has not been fixed yet
Try clicking on the blank thumbnail and seeing what it shows in the main window
And remember the sure way to know what is going to print is to preview it according to this article - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1040 - and save the resulting PDF for reference

  • IPhoto keeps reading "uploading 25 photos" on Photo Stream

When I go into iCloud or My Photo Stream on iPhoto (on my PowerBook), it continually reads "Uploading 25 photos" in the upper right hand corner.  This is true after restarting several times.  It looks like all the pertinent photos are there, what are the 25 photos, and what's keeping them from uploading, and/or how do I stop it?

Both my computers do this. I tried to rebuild my library and even re-installed iphoto, but neither fixes the problem. Very frustrating.

  • Iphoto will not upload / freezes have to force quit.

Mac OSX version 10.6.8  iphoto will not upload photos. After iphoto is open , it freezes and I have to forcequit. Any one have a simple fix for this?

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists.
If iPhoto does not freeze when importing photos into the new, test library then your current library is the culprit. If that's the case if you have the space available on your hard drive and don't aready have a backup copy of the library make a temporary, backup copy (select the library and type Command+D) and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

i cannot open iphoto- the message I am getting says Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command-
I tries and it doesnt work!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto 6.06 "quit unexpectantly" problem

    IPhoto 6.06 “quit unexpectantly” problem
    Running OS 10.4.9
I dragged some jpegs into iphoto for import
The jpegs were dated 2002 and named tom001.jpg etc.
While importing they caused iphoto to unexpectantly quit
When iPhoto is relaunched it begins to load photos and quits after 15 seconds
Seems like it may still be trying to import
I have deleted out of the library (thumbnails and originals) the photos that were imported
I have tried rebuilding the database but iPhoto continues to quit
I have rebuilt the thumbnails (long and short version)
I have used disk utility to repair disk permissions
I have tried all of the below from this apple support link
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107947
Additionally I Have created a new user and imported the suspect photos. I photo is now stable. Also I pointed the new account to a duplicate of the damaged library to a external drive. Can not se roll names. Rebuilding small icons as a experiment.
    HELP
    Thanks in advance D Wells

    DWells:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that's in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
See if either of those will help.

  • Iphoto 9.1.5 upgrade problem on July 12 2011 on iMac running Snow Leopard

2nd user (My wife) on my iMac, following the upgrade today, when opening iphoto gave an error message of "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.  Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again.  If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library.  To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen. it while keeping the option and Command keys pressed.  You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup" .
I followed these instructions and eventually selected the "repair" option, which was the first option.  This process "Upgrading Library: Scanning Library" has now been running for 2 hours and I'm concerned that it will not succeed.
Secondly, since applying the complete upgrade to the ilife programs today, my network changed itself somehow from the network I had set up on my Time Capsule, to the network provided by my ISP.  How?  It had not been modified by myself and in fact a Time Machine backup to my Time Capsule was actioned successfully approx. 1 hour before the update was downloaded, via my Time Capsule Network and applied.  Nothing had been changed.
This upgrade has concerned me.  I've not experienced anything like this before with previous upgrades.

I ran into the same problem.  Installed 9.1.5 and BAM! - iPhoto wouldn't launch - got the "Your photo libary is either in use ..." error.  I did the normal stuff - restored 9.1.3 from my backup.  No dice.  Deleted iPhoto and reinstalled from origial media, then upgraded to 9.1.3.  No dice.  Reverted my iPhoto library to pre-9.1.5 date.  No dice.
So, I do a little digging.  I created a new library and that worked fine.  So, there's something wrong with my old library.  I showed the contents of the old library and the new one.  I looked at the files that were being modified at the time the library was opened.  There is a file called iPhotoLock.data.  Hmm.  I wonder ...
So, I deleted that file from the contents of the library (copied it to another location), opened iPhoto with the option key held down, selected my old library and it opened right up.
Short story is, the iPhotoLock.data file was corrupted somehow, so by deleting it and letting iPhoto create a new one, I was able to get all my stuff back.  Didn't have to use the library manager or anything that extreme.
I've seen a number of posts like this one and never saw an answer that was acceptable.  The only posts with an "answer" were to use the library manager to build a new library from the old one.  I loose things that way (books, etc.) and that wasn't acceptable.  I thought I'd post this so maybe others can try it and see if it works for them.
The explanation of how to do this is simple.  Open the folder where your library resides, control-click the iPhoto library and select "show contents".  You'll see the iPhotoLock.data file.  Delete it.  Close the window that opened when you selected "show contents".  Run iPhoto again and, if it works like mine did, your life will be back and visible again.
    Hope this helps.

All I can say is the books I've created as gifts to my children for their children were received with absolute joy and appreciation (each book chronicled in pictures  the first year of each grandchild's life). Granted the sentimental factor had a lot to do with the recipient's enjoyment of the book but they were spetacular. The book with its glossy dust cover is a very impressinve way to present your photos.
As Larry has pointed out so many have posted here that they were very satisfried with their book and Apple is very good about correcting problems.
To make sure there are no errors in the book before you order preview the book as described in this Apple document: iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it. If the PDF file shows no errors, either in text typos (my biggest problem) or in missing photos, etc., the printed book will be error free.

Mac book pro stops responding after Maverick OS restart. Currently have a circle with a line through it after 20+ hours. Tried to shut it down and use the Time Machine to restore but no response. How can I restore with Time Machine if it will not start?

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

  • Why is iPhoto doing this none stop?

My iPhoto does this none stop.
    I've restarted.
I've restarted the computer, deleted the plist file and it still does it none stop no matter how long I leave it open.
Is there a quick fix.  It started this after I created another library.

This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

The photos printed in my iphoto '11 book have come out fuzzy. they were fine the first time i had them printed, why have they come out fuzzy second time?
I printed a book for a relative a couple of years ago to celebrate his 21st. then this year his younger brother also turned 21, I printed a new photo memory book and used some of the photos in his older brothers book in this new one. Those photos that were used in both books came out fuzzy in the second one when they were fine in the first one. Why could this be and can it be rectified?

Did you use different versions of the photos or different sizes? Have you now used a different iPhoto version? The book templates changed between the versions.
Compare the printed book to the PDF preview of your book. The printed book should look exactly as the preview, see:   iPhoto, Aperture: Previewing an order in iPhoto or Aperture

  • Hardcover book glue binding problems

I was very disappointed upon receiving my first iPhoto '08 book today. There are two problems:
    1. The glue used for the binding went beyond the spine. Most of the pages were stuck together near the spine, so spots were left on most of the pictures close to the spine from where glue lifted ink and paper from the facing page.
    2. There is a fingerprint-sized smudge or smear on the dust jacket cover photo. There is no such blemish on the original photo, even when zoomed in to great extent. It looks like the ink was smudged while still wet.
Has anyone else experienced problems with the binding glue in hardcover or softcover books? It's frustrating that there is no search box for this iPhoto discussion board! I browsed through postings back through November 2007 and didn't see others reporting these problems. I expect Apple will correct the problem when I contact customer service. These issues are really a shame - the book is otherwise beautiful. The printer must be having some binding and handling issues.

I have not seen or heard of this problem - I'm sure it is an anomaly
