Iphoto '11 cannot show slideshow for files on NFS (Faces fails, too)

Hello, please help me see my pictures in slideshow! I get black pictures, but I have a unique error (google has zero hits on '"NULL CGImageSource" iphoto'). See details below. Thanks!
I'm using iPhoto '11 (9.1.5 (615)).
My preferences have UNCHECKED "copy items into the iPhoto Library". I want my pictures to remain on my linux (NFS) server so that other PCs can view them in their existing directory tree organization.
I import the files into iPhoto. I see them all. yay!
I also import files from my iPhone. These most likely reside on my local Mac drive rather than on the server. yay.
Signs that things are strange:
- I can use Faces to identify faces for those pictures which originated on my iPhone(now on local drive), but not those stored on the NFS location.
- When I use the slideshow, pictures which originated on my iPhone (now on local drive) appear, but not those stored on the NFS location. These are black screen. If I use a Theme such as Snapshots, then I see the white borders, and blackness inside. No, I didn't shoot *every* picture with the lens cap on.
- (THIS IS THE KEY ERROR MESSAGE FOR APPLE SOFTWARE ENGINEERS TO INVESTIGATE!) Console is spewing errors such as:

I find this odd, because IT'S THE WRONG PATH! The correct path only contains one "yoda" in the tree hierarchy, i.e.
/Volumes/network/yoda/rbrown/misc/pics/gretchen/2001/IMG_0046.JPG rather than
/Volumes/network/yoda/yoda/rbrown/misc/pics/gretchen/2001/IMG_0046.JPG
I should note that from iPhoto, if I click "File->Reveal in Finder", the Finder launches to the correct location (one "yoda" in hierarchy). It opens on /Volumes/network/yoda/rbrown/misc/pics/gretchen/2001/IMG_0046.JPG and I see the file.
The mount itself looks like:

And I'm not confused about the directory tree:

Once I discovered this oddity, I thought maybe there was something about the way I browsed in iPhoto to find the pictures to import. I had gone through the "yoda" share on the left-side of the file selection box. So I deleted the pictures from iPhoto, and decided to use a symbolic link, which I had created in my home area on the Mac:

lrwxr-xr-x 1 rbrown staff 21 Feb 2 23:07 /Users/rbrown/yoda -> /Volumes/network/yoda
When I import photos into iPhoto using the "rbrown" item with the house icon (my Mac home directory) on the left-side of the file selection box, and then click through "yoda" and then through "rbrown" and "misc" etc. etc., to find the same files via the non-canonical path of /Users/rbrown/yoda/rbrown/misc/pics/gretchen/2001/, here's what happens:
- I have to highlight files, not the directory.
- If I hightlight the files, then they import okay into iPhoto, and appear on the main window
- The slideshow still doesn't work (black images)
- The Console error message changes(!) to:
7/27/11 11:54:03 PM    iPhoto[1541]    NULL CGImageSource for Path - /Masters/IMG_0022.JPG!!!
I have no idea where "/Masters" originated. I have no such directory anywhere, to my knowledge.

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

IPhoto's Slide Show allows for only one song !

I love the feature of iPhoto's slide show for a user to accompany a slide show with music from one's iTunes library. However, you can only pick one song. That means that if you have a slide show longer than one songs worth of time (most slide shows will be this way), the song will just keep repeating.
Sure would be nice if there was a way to either play mutiple songs from a user's iTunes playlist. Alternatively, I've heard that the a capability may exist (outside of iTunes) to concatenate multiple songs together to accomplish the same end.
Any suggestions on how to do either of the above?

Road #1
You can consolidate 2or more songs together in iTunes and name that (2 in 1) big song, Say, "eye of the tiger 2in 1) so this way it will be easy to locate it in the iTunes library while searching through iPhoto. Else you can create a separate albums in iTunes, and you put there only songs that are combined together.
Road #2
This is the one I prefer. You can export your slide show to QT (Quicktime). it requires some calculation to create a slide show that ends with the end of 1 song. Then you create another QT slide show, that ends with another songs.... etc..... after you merge all the parts together and you have a very long slide show with many songs!
Transitions:
Keep in mind that exporting to quicktime uses only the desolve transition. Which is fine with me. I have seen so many people doing some power point presentation and slide show with photos and using a array of different transitions..... in the same slide show.....it is disturbing, and takes away from viewing pictures. In cinema, it is said: "the thecniques should remain invisible" so keep the disolve transition... it is the least obtrusive .... your viewers, will never complain that there was no "cube effects"! Only you know about the missing effects!
Self contained file.
When you export to QT, you now have a file that you can send people through e-mail (given that it is a reasonable size) or you can even post them on web page! like a .mac page.
When you want to view the show, you just click on the file and play it. No need to start iPhoto. No need to have a MAC, it can be seen on a PC too with QT. You can put it on a CD or DVD, and can be viewed on a DVD player.
But when you play your slide show directly from iPhoto, you have to be in front of your mac, you have to have iPhoto open! But you can have you mac connected to a TV in the living room (I do) and then can play the slide show from iPhoto, using a TV-VGA adaptor that will play on your living room TV for a larger crowd to see. It can also be played through the sound system!!!! infinity and beyond!!
If you want more specific on how to export to QT and merge 2,3,4,5 files post back. I will get more into it.
I always export to QT, because this way, in the future, you do not have to mess around again in selecting the photos needed, and selecting the songs in iPhoto. I just click the QT file, and it will always play the same!

IPhoto 6 - reverse showing slideshow

I guess this one should be simple, but I can not see where I can change the direction of my slideshows. I would like to show them in reverse order.
Any help would be greatly appriciated

In the slideshow mode, type Command-A to select all of the photos in the photo tray at the top. Then click and drag the first slide to the right. All of the slides will become one icon. Drag it to the right of the window and release. That will reverse the order of the slides.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Convert iphoto book into a slideshow for iDVD one photo at a time in order

Hi I've read a couple of posts that were helpful on this topic, but I have one more requirement to add.
What I'd like is a slideshow made of photos that are now in a BOOK on iPhoto that I can export to iDVD to burn for viewing on a TV.
The two requirements are:
each photo shows up as an individual slide rather than each slide looking like a BOOK page with more than one photo on it.
There were some posts suggesting to rate each photo and create a SMART ALBUM out of them. That has worked so far to get each photo in an ALBUM.
However, I would like to keep the same order that is in the book. So how do I do this?
Is there anyway to sort a smart album by the time order each photo was rated?

Yes, with one extra step. Create a new, not-Smart album for your slideshow. Select all photos in your Smart Album and drag them to the new album. Now you can use the Sort functions.

IPhoto tag import only works for files touched by Picasa

I have 6000+ photos which I painstakingly tagged up in Vista (Vista Photo Gallery is auperb for this task by the way) in readiness for getting my wife a MacBook.
The problem is when I import them, some, but not all tags are imported.
As an example, I search for my wife's name. In both Vista Photo Gallery and Google Picasa2, I get 775 and 773 photos returned respectively (I'll worry about the odd 2 later). In iPhoto (both in '06 and '08) I get 84 photos.
Having a look at the properties of some of the files, it appears that any photo I have done any editing in Picasa has had its tags imported corrected. The rest do not.
From reading the Windows Photo team blog, it seems they were keen to do tagging correctly (including always saving tag info back to the file - Apple take note), so I doubt very much it's the fault of Vista Photo Gallery - though I've not been weened off windows yet The fact that Google Picasa correctly sees the tags lends weight to this argument.
Has anyone any ideas or experience of this or other related problems?
Are there any third party scripts or tools (free!) that will import tags correctly?
Should I file a bug report, and if so where?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Tagging is still very new. Creative Commons have some background info here: http://wiki.creativecommons.org/XMP but even they refer to the " balkanized state of embedded metadata standards.".
Regardless of what you may hope or think, the simple fact of the matter is that there is no convention or protocol adopted by everyone for tagging pics. This is true both within Operating Systems and between them. Microsoft, Google and Adobe all have systems going that are partly compatible. The simple fact of the matter is that there is no way to tag on Windows in such a way as the tag can be reliably read on a Mac - and vice versa. It's a reasonable guess that if you tag using the Adobe system that will be read by Adobe apps on either side, but not necessarily by anyone else's application.
What's best is if you can find an app that writes to the Exif data and one that read those fields of the Exif data...
And, sorry, but I don't know of any...

IPhoto/iMovie not showing eligible for update in Mac App Store

I understand that with the release of Mavericks, anyone with early versions of iWork or iLife apps are able to update to the current version free of charge.
I know that this works for the iWork apps but I'm having problems with the iLife apps (iPhoto and iMovie).
I was able to re-install the iWork apps (Numbers, Pages, Keynote) from the iWork install DVD that I had. After installing them, the Mac App Store recognized the apps and I was able to proceed with the upgrade.
Unfortunately, I'm not having the same luck with the iLife apps. I had to install both iPhoto and iMovie from the Applications Install DVD that I received when I originally purchased my MBP. I was able to successfully install the two apps, but now when I go into the Mac App Store, it doesn't seem to recognize that I've got the apps on my computer - it only gives me the option to purchase the apps.
Any thoughts on how I can get the updates to iPhoto and iMovie? It seems to be related to how I installed them (as I selectively installed these two apps from the Install DVD), but I've got no idea as to how I can get the upgraded version.

No. You may have to contact App Store support to get this resolved.

Adapter engine showing error for file adapters

Hi,
I had configured communication channel using FTP . Because of which the Adapter engine is showing red in the component monitoring. It is saying one of the communicaion channel has error. But when I do a check in the CCs they doesn't show any error. I am getting the same error for NFS as well.
Has anyone come across such a kind of situation? Is it because of wrong entry in CC parameters or is it some BASIS configuration (patch) issue?
Could anyone of you give some guidance on this?

Just for testing purpose , delete ur comm.channel and check whether still u r facing the errors. If no errors then its bcoz of u comm.channel. Then we can narrow down the approach. Even after deleting the comm.chanel u get error then check all the channels across all clusters.
Note:After deleting the channel ,give some time and check the same.

Comparison gives error / not show differences for File Protection

We tried to verify on our MS (Version 6.0.2) with comparison two Installations with:
"Comparison Style: install to install"
"Level of Detail: directory and file properties"
(as you can choose in the UI)
1) Seems that he don't catch file protection (which are different from one Installation to the other, we tried this with a very simple comparison run with only two files to compare .....)
2) A comparison on a Installation with a lot of Files to compare (BEA-Weblogic Installation) it gives following Error Messages:
A comparison failed because Unable to complete the install to install comparison under path "/opt/bea/wlserver923/weblogic92/server/bin/international"|Ensure that you have read permission on the directory and try again. (600094) on 10/31/08 1:42:11 PM MET. The comparison used settings: wls-9.2.3-1.
But this Directory got the following protection on reference and comparison host:

I wonder how much anyone is using this functionality. We are stated to use comparison in "install to install" mode and getting the same error. For me it looks it is failing on empty dirs. We are trying this on both win and solaris machines and getting the same problem.
Did someone got this functionality (which is very good!!!!) working smoothly?

Have upgraded to Lion but cannot find AirDrop for file transfer. Does it exist?

Apple lists AirDrop as a new feature in the Lion OS and it looks great but it is not where it should be in Finder, Go, Apps and Spotlight has never heard of it. Am I missing something or has Apple dumped it from the OS but not the sales pitch?

AirDrop is still in Lion, but is (and has always been) only supported on certain systems. Check to see if your system is supported:
