Iphoto 11 does not recognise iphoto 9 library stored on external hard drive

Hi anyone,
Been tormented for a full week now where I have "lost" nearly 100Gb of phots. It is driving me insane! I have tried all the possible remedies - the Comd Option functions on iphoto start up, the rebuild, the rebuild on iphot manager, changing the "show package contents" options - but nothing.
The problem. I recently upgraded my mac and with it the software - going from iphoto 09 to iphoto 11.  I had been using a smaller library (15Gb) stored on my Mac which migrated fine. The issue was when I tried to connect into my external library that things went haywire.  The photographs on the external harddrive show as black squares on iphoto 11, sometimes it briefly flashes the underneath image, but none of them are able to open. The migrated images are fine.
I've tried to then create copies of my external hard drive library  but even when I play around with these copies the problem persists. I am terrified that I've corrupted the parent. The external library still opens fine on my old machine on iphoto 09. When I look at "show package contents" under preview on the iphoto 11 mac, the images come up fine so I know they are (at least the majority, there seems to be some phots missing!).
I am at the very limit of my technical ability and sanity. I don't have a time machine backup, my parent library isn't fully backed up so if I revert back to a stored master I will lose a couple of months of photos which included last summers Olympics.
The other threads don't seem to cover this exact problem - has anyone else suffered? Any remedies would be gratefully appreciated and would move me down the stress ladder by at least a couple of rungs.
Kind regards,
John

Well here's the first problem:
The drive is in MS-DOS (FAT) format (a 500Gb Lacie).
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos. So, get the Library onto an appropriately formatted disk.
If you're thinking of reformatting that disk, remember that doing so will erase it, and so make sure you back it up first.
I would try open the Library from an appropriately formatted disk. If the issues persist them try the rebuild with Library Manager again.

i just saved my iphoto original library to my external hard drive, now how do i create new space on my hard drive and create a new iphoto library

Trash the copy of the library you just moved. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
But do you want to have two iPhoto Libraries? Why not just use the one on the External?

  • Itunes is not picking up the library on my external hard drive although I have mapped the drive in preferences? Can anyone help please? Thank you.

    Hi,
I have been rebuilding our iTunes library on a external hard drive, no problems to start with.  The pc crashed the other day and I lost some of the files.
I can see the music files on the external hard drive, but I haven't been able to get iTunes to pick them up as being the library despite following the instructions to map the drive under 'preferences' in iTunes.  I have added new songs, these are being saved in the folder on the external hard drive and are showing in the library pane on iTunes, any suggestions how I can get the other files to show in the library? Would be very grateful for any help! Thank you.

The fix for the exclamation marks is: Adobe Lightroom - Find moved or missing files and folders
The proper way to use backups is to restore the photos to their original location, but you probably don't want to do that as you said your old hard disk was almost full. Thus, the solution given above will solve the problem.

  • I would like to copy my iphoto events library to my external hard drive as events not just thousands of individual photos. :)

Basically when I try to highlight events in iphoto and drag them to my external drive it takes them out of their events and puts them into the external hard drive as individual photos. This is way too unorganized for my liking and it would take me days to get them all sorted again. Isn't there a way to have them just go right to the external drive in their defined events?
    thanks

If using iPhoto 11 then you can do this with the File -> Export command:
    File -> Export
    This User Tip
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4921
has details of the options in the Export dialogue.
If using an earlier version then create a folder and export to it.
THat said, dragging and sropping only gets the Preview of your photos and that is not the best quality possible. The Export route has more options.

  • Importing an iphoto 08 Library from an external hard drive

I'm trying to migrate my old library from my old MBP to my new one. I've backed up a copy to an external hard drive and then i have tried creating a new library on my new MBP and importing from that hard drive. The file is around 50GB and when it get to 3GB of transfer im getting an error 36 code saying some of the files are locked and cant be moved.
I even tried deleting the default library and then creating a new one, but using the one from the external hard drive instead of a fresh install. This actually appeared to work. I could view all my photos and see all the smart folder etc all within iphoto. However the library wasnt actually moved to the MBP all i was doing was viewing it on the external hard drive.
Can someone please help me, this is driving me nuts!

Sorry its my description thats confusing here. If i follow your instructions then the software is trying to repair from within the iphoto library on my machine. Which currently contains no photos. How do i get it to pull the photos across from the backup. Ive tried simply dragging the backup library across to my photos folder, but it only allows 3GB and then reports the code 36 error.

  • Iphoto library stored on external hard drive GONE

My iphoto library has been stored on an external hard drive for a couple of years now, has always worked perfectly until today...I noticed that my desktop photo was gone, so I opened iphoto, and it says that the library cannot be found...at which point I noticed the hard drive is no longer showing up on the desktop of my imac. Also tried connecting it to our macair...also doesn't show up and asks if I want to initialize it...HELP!! I need my pics!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Sounds like a hard drive problem rather than an iPhoto one. If the drive won't mount so the library is available iPhoto won't work. So I'd run Disk Utility and see if it can see the drive. If it can then run DU and try to repair the disk. Otherwise you'll have to take the drive in to a service provider to see if they can mount the drive and save the files.

  • I have a CS6 Disc I purchased. It does not seem to fit correctly in my external hard drive so I can download the software. Is a special kind of external hard drive required. I have a MAC Book Pro Yosemite version.

I recently purchased an Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design & Web Premium software so I could use a more updated version of Photoshop & Illustrator. My new Mac Book Pro does not have an internal hard drive. I was told by Apple to buy an external hard drive to download the software. I bought an LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer compatible for MAC. When I went to put the disc in the drive it does not seem to fit in the tray properly. Is there a special size external drive I need to purchase to do this? Please help if you know the answer. Thank you.

  • ITunes Library stored on external hard drive

My iTunes Library is contained on an external hard drive which is in turn connected to an iMac, all of which connects to my airport network. I control the playback of the content on my Powerbook on the various airport express fed music systems in my apartment.
Is there anyway I can instruct the iTunes I use on my powerbook to always use this external drive? I currenly have to reset the library location each time I boot up (the Powerbook).
Also any music I download from iTunes store is saved to the hard drive on the powerbook (and then moved over to the hard drive manually). I'm looking for a way to sync the whole setup? I intend to change my airport extreme to the next generation and connect the hard drive to it so I'm guess this will help but is there a way around this break in the chain.
Also to keep both iTunes Library database files on both machines identical I currently copy from one to the other but this can at time cause problems in automatically recognising the location of a file, and then have to locate etc.
    Any suggestion gratefully receieved.

I took a second look at my settings. I do find the Music Folder on the other drive set as the location. Possibly I forgot that I've changed that too.
So, maybe you could try to set this in the preferences with a little help help from the alias in the default home folder. :-D
I could suggest an AppleScript to automatically connect to your server by setting this script-applet as default startup in you user account settings.
    on run
set myUserName to "username" --enter your name here
set myPassword to "password" --enter your password here
    set myServers to {¬
"afp://192.168.1.1/disk1", ¬ --set your server addresses here
    "afp://192.168.1.1/disk2", ¬
    "afp://192.168.1.1/disk3"}
set myServerCount to the number of items of myServers
    tell application "Finder"
repeat with i from 1 to myServerCount
set thisServer to item i of myServers
repeat 5 times --i repeat this a couple of time to prevent connection drop-out
    try
mount volume thisServer as user name myUserName with password myPassword
    exit repeat
    end try
    end repeat
    end repeat
    end tell
    end run

My movies library is getting frighteningly large, and I want to move it (not the entire library) to an external HD, and still be able to watch the movies (when the HD is connectec). How would I do that?

It's not a feature of iTunes but can be done using various work-arounds.
Small hard drive? Split your iTunes library across multiple volumes - http://www.macyourself.com/2009/04/24/small-hard-drive-split-your-itunes-library -across-multiple-volumes/  - copying media folders to external, then deleting from internal, then adding again.

  • Paragon NTFS 11 not recognising Boot Camp partition or NTFS external hard drives!

    Hi guys,
So i had Paragon NTFS activated and working fine back when i was on Lion. Aftering upgrading to OS X mavericks, it was still working fine and recognising my boot camp drive, and any other NTFS capable ex.hard drive. My Paragon NTFS version back then was 10.1.xx
When paragon released their official v11.1.263, which supported OS X Mavericks officialy, i thought i would upgrade and benefit from that support. Ever since i upgrade, paragon is installed, activated, but not showing any NTFS drives in the menu. All my NTFS drives are therefore read only, and i cant transfer anything.
Any idea how to solve this issue? Thanks

Interesting. Comes with? you didn't have either before? Paragon is commercial and is now v. 10.0, they were the only one keeping updated and was supporting 10.7.4. I would not enable more than one.
For writing to HFS Paragon has theirs but probably give the nod to MacDrive there.
I never do an upgrade to a new OS over the old system, I backup (clone) and format the drive with the new OS and do the install so whatever is there I know is clean and also to keep from carrying around leftovers from years and systems past.
I would assme Paragon is limited. Try their site and knowledge base?

When you say "drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive", do you mean drop and drag the iPhoto applications icon from the task bar, to the external? I tried that and the mouse icon turned into the cloud, as if to delete iPhoto. I am sorry for my very novices skills. Can you please help?
No - "drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive" does not mean "drop and drag the iPhoto applications icon from the task bar, to the external"
It means exactly what it says - drag the "iPhoto Library" to the external drive - by default your iPhoto library is in the pictures folder  --  the only thing you do with the iPhoto application is to "depress the option key and launch iPhoto then use the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive "

  • How do I copy my iTunes library to an external hard drive?

I´d like to copy (note: copy NOT export) my iTunes library to an external hard drive but I just can´t figure out how! It says that the external hard drive can not be changed, therefor I can not drag and drop the iTunes files to it. The external hard drive is called iXternal (80GB). Please help, I´m on a tight dead line!

Select the external drive on the desktop and Get Info (Command-I).
At 'Ownership & Permissions:', click on the small triangle till it points down.
Verify that 'You can Read & Write'.
You should also see a checkbox 'Ignore ownership on this volume'.
If it is not checked, check it.
    Hope this helps.

I want to delete a copy of my iphoto library from an external hard drive. This drive is connected via my Apple extreme router. I drag the file to the trash but it just runs and does not seem to delete anything. 39 GB file. It is an older file and I want to clear up space on my external drive.

I figured it out just now.
I unplugged the drive from Airport Extreme and connected directly to the Imac via usb. Dragged the file to the trash and now it is gone.
