IPhoto doesn't launch while upgrading
After ugrading mavericks iPhoto doesn't run. I've got a message : "impossible to run while upgrading iPhoto". but I'm sure it's already done !
Is it normal ?Yes. I have put the downloading one into the trash and now it runs !
I think it's the same case for iMovie.
I don't know how i managed to get the two but now it works fine.
Thank you ! -
IPhoto doesn't launch Correctly
Every time I launch my iPhoto, the main window doesn't open. I've attempted to choose the library again, with no good results. It appears there's a significant with iPhoto since it will not open your iPhoto library when the app opens. Don't work around I have found that works is to go to your picture folder locate your iPhoto library creating alias and then drag that alias to the dock. If you launch iPhoto from the alias it appears to work correctly. I've only noticed this since upgrading to iPhoto 9.4.
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101. -
IPhoto doesn't launch after iLife '06 reinstallu
I did a clean system (10.4.11) reinstall, then reinstalled iLife '06 and then updated all the software. None of the iLife apps will launch - iWeb at least gives me an alert that files that iLife needs are missing but iPhoto just does nothing. I've backed up my iPhoto library so they are safe, but I can't even begin to get to them because iPhoto does nothing when I try to launch it. Any ideas?
Thanks, Terence. I'd already reinstalled again, but tried removing all plists and other supporting files from both the system library and user library folders. Same result. iMovie launches, iPhoto does nothing. iWeb gives an alert box that says files are missing and to reinstall iLife. It acts like it's trying to upgrade rather than reinstall, even though my disk is an "iLife '06 Install DVD".
I'd be grateful for any ideas!
thanks... -
I have just replaced my hard drive (more memory) and uploaded my Time Machine backup. Now iPhoto won't launch or reset and relaunch. Suggestions?
Well without no information to work with, try reinstall.
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store or have a Recent Mac you can find it in your Purchases List. -
I'm having more frequent problems with iPhoto since I upgraded to Leopard. I am only able to launch iPhoto if I restart my system and launch iPhoto first. If I launch any other application before iPhoto, iPhoto appears to launch - in other words, commands appear at the top of the screen, but I'm not able to do anything. Restarting my computer always seems to alleviate this problem but it's getting a little old. Any ideas?
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. First delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. See if that helps. Next rebuild the library as follows: launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If those don't help log into another account and see if iPhoto will launch with other apps open. If so then there may be a "bad" preference file other that iPhoto's that's giving iPhoto problems. Here's how to determine if that's the case:
Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
IPhoto doesn't ask to delete imported photos
For years, iPhoto on my MacBook Pro always asked if I wanted to delete the photos from the camera after importing them. For the last year or so, iPhoto 11 didn't always do that with my previous camera, although it sometimes did. Since I got the new Canon Rebel T3i, it never asks after if I want to delete them after importing them. I tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist my user library after seeing other comments referring to this, but iPhoto still doesn't ask. Each time I import, I have to reformat the SDHC card from the camera's menu, which works, but is somewhat of a pain, when iPhoto has the capability to erase these images.
Any new suggestions would be welcome! My workaround is to upload the photos to a folder on the Desktop, name the folder as I want the event to be named and drag the folder into the open iPhoto window to import them. I found that importing from the hard drive would let iPhoto eliminate duplicates when coming directly from the camera would not.
I don't believe it a bug in iPhoto as so few users are reporting this. Try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
or with Lion and Mt. Lion from the User/Library/Containers/com.apple.iPhoto/
Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE 1: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
NOTE 2: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder. -
How do I import an iPhoto Library (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.
So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

IPhoto doesn't recognize my 20D
IPhoto doesn't know my Canon 20D is connected to my Powerbook running on OSX 10.3.9 and iPhoto 4.0.3. The 20D connects properly with my iMac running OSX 10.4 so I don't think it is a camera problem. Any suggestions please!
Thanks John for the suggestion. Image Capture was not set up properly and now it is, but even after a restart neither iPhoto nor Image Capture recognize the camera. It does show up, however, in System Profile. Any other ideas.

Sendto mail recepient doesn't launch default mailto program (outlook2013)
Hi,I have a new laptop with a fresh windows 8.1 on it. I have installed office 2013 with outlook 2013. In explorer right clicking file and clicking send to 'mail recipient' doesn't launch anything.
The default program for mailto is set to "outlook(dektop)". I have uninstalled the metro mail app, just to be sure but no fix either. I have a feeling that the mailrecipient link in the sendto folder contains the command 'mail' and not the
command 'mailto'. When i make a shortcut for example with a mailto command in it on my desktop, it works.
Any suggestions would greatly appreciated since i am alraidy working on this issue for days on end.
Thanks in advance.Hi,
As Windows 8.1 just fresh installed, also Windows 2013. Generally speaking, it should not Windows itself problem.
Firstly, you can try to set Default Program for Outlook for test.
Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs
Please also make sure Set Program Access and Computer Defaults is Outlook.
If no use, you can try to reinstall Office 2013 for test to fix this problem.
In addition, there is no conflict between Office 2013 with Mail APP. Your problem should be not caused by Mail app.

Spotlight doesn't launch on login
I'm having trouble with Spotlight, it doesn't launch when I log in. I can open it manually, so to speak, but I can't get it to launch automatically.
As suggested by V.K., I've tried these commands, but it didn't solve the problem:
sudo mdutil -i off /
sudo mdutil -E /
sudo mdutil -i on /
Any ideas? You could try the old standby "repair permissions" if something is wrong here that effects launchd (which keeps spotlight and many other things running) this could fix it. A test would be to use activity monitor to kill the "Spotlight" process (after you manually start it) and see if it restarts on its own within a few seconds. If not, launchd is not doing it's job which actually seems certain already.
It seems drastic, but if this fails, I would recommend doing an re-install of the OS with the archive and install method. I say this because clearly something is not right in the OS startup procedure (specifically launchd). If this is true, other things not as noticeable could be wrong as well.
This works better than it did with older systems and should successfully move all parts of most installed apps, all your data etc to the new system. Apps that install kernel extensions in /System (parallels, cisco VPN client, others) would need a re-install. unix command line apps are ignored too.
once you verify everything is is and running and your data is all there, etc, you can safely remove the "Previous Systems" folder this process will create. -
Hey everyone... when I dock my iPhone all of my assets in iTunes show up except for iPhoto. Aperture, movies, etc. all will sync but iPhoto doesn't show any of my albums. One post suggests that I remove all my keywords but, frankly, that isn't a solution in any way, shape or form. I've rebuilt my library and even upgraded to iPhoto '08. What can I do?
-AThis is not an answer. It's, I guess, another aspect of the same question.
In my case, iTunes seems to be able to see iPhoto, but does not recognize any album. In other words, in iTunes the iPhoto sync selection shows up, but not the albums. I am able to upload ( sync ) pictures from a folder, but I want to sync with iPhoto - that's where my pictures already are and I don't want to be looking and setting up folders just for this syncing purpose.
