IPhoto 11 event titles gone?, iPhoto 11 event titles gone?

I upgraded online to iPhoto11.  While working I lost all Event Titles, a message said "reinstall iPhoto11", how would I do that?
It happened when I chose select all in one event.  It selected over 14,000 photos, I unselected them before doing anything and that is when I lost all event titles.  ANY SUGGESTIONS in laymans language would be appreciated.

To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

    What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
    This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • All iPhoto events appear empty in "Event" view

    When I view my iPhoto 11 library by "Events", I get the usual listing of all my events, and I am able to scroll through the preview pictures at this level within the individual small Event icon. The key photo shows as normal.  However, if I double click on an event, the event comes up but without any photos showing, not even an empty grey window frame for each photo.  The name of the event shows correctly but on the top right corner it simply says NO PHOTOS.
    Now the strange thing is that if I view the library by "Photos" or "Faces" or via Albums etc, I see all my photos and they all appear to be in their corresponding events as normal.  I can even right click on one of my photos and click "Show Event" and then the correct event comes up with all the photos showing.  But if I then go back to "All Events", I will see all the events but if I select one (even one I have just viewed), it will then say NO PHOTOS.
    I have deleted the plist files (included the "locked" ones) from both iPhoto and Aperture but this doesn't resolve the problem.  I've also done a "Repair Permissions", "Rebuild Thumbnails" and "Rebuild Database" from the iPhoto First Aid menu (Opt-Cmd Click when opening iPhoto) and none of these have fixed the problem!  
    I just recently started using Aperture to view the same Library and I have no problem viewing the "Projects" (which is the same as Events in iPhoto) in the normal way.  I have a feeling that this problem started only when I first opened the iPhoto library in Aperture.
    Any ideas?

    You don't need to purchase iPLM to use it to rebuild the library.  But try this first:  apply the two fixes below in order as needed: 
    Fix #1
    Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
    Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
    1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
    2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
    3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
    4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    5 - Click on the Create button.
    Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    I truly love the slideshows I create in iPhoto with music...
    "BUT", I'd also like to add a brief comment before, during or after the slideshow, and I've found this impossible to do.
    Is Apple waiting for the new upgrade to address this problem?...
    I've gone into my wordprocessor "Appleworks, and text-edit", hoping I could then export/import the titles into iPhoto, but to no avail...
    I enjoy creating slideshows with music, then burning them, then playing them on stereo sound television, and its a total blast for me when I view my creations.
    So, Apple, or readers on this site, please help a poor old man towards the path of enlightenment, for life can truly be beautiful with "titles"...

    Don't know if you misunderstood my problem, but today, I found the solution to putting titles into iPhoto slideshows, and its pretty simple also.
    I don't know how to enter a link here in order to include the directions on how to create titles in iPhoto..
    But, briefly, create the title in any wordprocessor.
    Take a screen shot.
    Drag it into an iPhoto icon
    Then, drag the icon into the iPhoto library.

  • Can I batch change titles within iPhoto while keeping the original IMG_(4digit) filename/title as PART of the new title?

    Using iPhoto '09/8.1.2 on a MacBookPro, with 40,000+ photo library, having the (apparently common) problem of CD burn errors (with Toast and with Disk Utility) when 2 photos end up having the same underlying filename assigned by the camera.  To try to avoid this, I want to retitle pictures within iPhoto so I can utilize the "use title as filename" option when exporting (because I guess I can't burn CDs from WITHIN iPhoto because of this problem, right?).  I was hoping to create new titles that were a combination of the existing 4 digit filename assigned by the camera, combined with new descriptive text (either date, or event title would be fine), and hoping to save time by using Batch Change (which I've never tried - just seen it mentioned here in perusing discussions).  I've also seen reference to "Automator" (which may be over my head), but again not sure if that can be used within iPhoto to combine existing/new title text.  (Also, I saw mention of a script written by Toad at Toad Hall site, but the link to it was bad - may be over my head, also: never tried a "script" before...)  Thanks in advance!

    No.  Coming out of iPhoto you're limitied to the Title, real file name, Album name or (in the Export window) Text  with or without sequential number.
    However, if you export out with the orignal file name to a folder you can use a file renaming app to add whatever common text to the beginning of the file name so you would get XXXX XXX-IMG 1234.jpg.  Some renamers can remove the IMG bore adding the text at the beginning.
    The app that I use and like best is Name Mangler.  Very powerfull.

  • Photo sort in an event. Why, once in an event, view, sort, by title, is the event not saved that way.

    Have driven myself bonkers trying to sort this out. I'm scanning old pix, their creation date will be the date they are scanned. I put them into an event and needless to say they are all out of order. No probs, once in the event you are given the option to sort by date, title etc. So having put them in already numbered I use the sort by title. It works until you leave iphoto, when you return they are out of order, it seems to default to Date. So, I use the batch adjust to adjust date/time and it works but only seems to work if the whole of the event is done this way.
    We recently celebrated our 60th B'day, pix taken on 4 different cameras, one with an incorrect date time setting have proved very difficult to sort. Despite altering the date time from the poorly set camera to achieve correct time order it will not get into order. Do you have to change every pix time in an event to get proper results? We like the way events are shown (pic) rather than the list with Albums. Also our kids bought us an Apple TV which we really like and for us ol' Duffers the pix presentation of the events is for us far more pleasing. I've read several similar threads here and it would appear I'm barking up the wrong tree as, if I've read it correctly events are always going to default to Date. Any help much appreciated.... thanks Victa

    In iPhoto '11 you set the event sort under the event meno ==> sort events. Unless you have a problem it will stay thay way until you change it either using the sort events command or changing it to manual by manually moving an event (which I have accidentally done from time to time requiring me to reset my desired sort)
    Your question 2 is not clear. As noted events are sorted by the oldest photo in the event

    As to telling Apple how to implement their software, this is certainly not the place to do that. This is strictly a user to user forum and Apple is not here. Frankly as a consumer you need to pick products you like and use them. Do you try to tell Sony what they should do with their TVs? GM what to do with cars? Etc. if you like the product use it. Millions do and as a result of their decisions Apple is the largest company ever. If you don't like the product then don't use it. If you really are so much smarter than Apple then start your own company and put them out if business with your brilliant products

  • Converting iPhoto 6 rolls to iPhoto 7 events

    I'm about to take the plunge and install iPhoto 08. I have hundreds of rolls in my library. Some rolls represent 1 day, some represent many days. All roll titles have been renamed.
    I'm happy to acquire the new event splitting functionality on new and imported photos & events, but I want my old rolls to remain 100% untouched.
    Cany anyone confirm: upon library conversion, will iPhoto keep my rolls untouched, or will it perform auto event splitting to the old rolls?
    If iPhoto will auto-split my old rolls by default, is there a preference I can change before conversion to prevent this from happening?

    Larry has a good point in his comment about rolls. If you use roll numbers for identification then you should rename the rolls to something other than Roll XX as that will become Untitled Event. Maybe change "Roll" to "Number". That will preserve the number for your identification.

    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto splitting photos into separate events

    IPhoto used to have a selection to turn off autosplitting photos into events when importing.  That option is gone.  The best I can find not is to autosplit items into one event per week.  Is there a way to do this (i.e. through the terminal) or is there a third-party option?

    After looking around on the discussions I guess you're right about it not being an option, but I can tell you that I routinely import photos from our camera spanning multiple days (weeks even) without iPhoto autosplitting them into separate events.  The autosplitting just cropped up today, and whether the older behavior was due to a corrupted preferences file or some other glitch, I want it back.  I appreciate your orgainizational advice, but I simply do not care to work that way - I much preferred the old iPhoto 'camera roll' analogy and hate when iPhoto second-guesses me about how to organize my photos.  Is there a way to force iPhoto to stop autosplitting?

  • IPhoto '11 -- manual sort of event photos is not available

    Hi,
    When viewing an Event, for some reason, I am unable to drag and drop to sort the photos. View > Sort Photos shows Manually and Reset Manual Sort are grayed out.
    I am able to do a manual sort of the Events themselves in the Events window, but when I open an Event and view the photos in that Event, I can't reorder them. I am reading the Help file, and I can't see why this isn't working.
    Doing a manual sort in an Album works by dragging and dropping.

    That's correct. The manual sort applies only to the Events themselves, not their photos. Within an Event photos can be sorted by Date, Keyword, Title or Rating. Not manually. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.
    If you want to sort the contents of an Event manually drag the Event into the Album section of the left hand pane to create an Album of that event. Then you can use a manual sort.

  • Iphoto removing photos from some events but not the library

    I have the current MacBook Air. I import all my pictures through the photostream. Iphoto creates an event for each month, eg June 2013 Photostream.
    When I was looking through these I noticed some pictures had gone missing. I thought these had somehow got deleted but if I check under Faces they are still there and if I look at the last 12 months album they are still there as well. In the Last 12 Months album they are in the right place order wise.
    I am new to Iphoto and it worries me that my pictures are going missing from some places as I am concerned that some may being deleted completely. It also makes it difficult when you are making up an album of an event as I need to look in a few places to make sure I have all the pictures from an event.
    I can confirm that the pictures were definately in the monthly photosteam event and that they were not deleted from it by me. It has also happened in a couple of the months so it is not just one folder that is effected.

    Let me try and explain it this way.
    Say I have taken ten pictures, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
    These were imported to iPhoto and went into an event it created called June 2013 Photostream. They were all imported and showed up in order 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
    Some of them I have now tagged faces in etc.
    When I go back now and look in the June 2013 Photostream I only see 1,3,4,5,6,9,10
    But if I look in the last 12 months album I still see 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 in the right place and the right order
    Pictures 5,6,7,8 all had my face tagged and when I look in my face album 5,6,7,8 all show in the right place in the right order.
    I have got iPhoto to rebuild the library etc and they do not go back to showing in the Photostream import folder.

    I presume iPhoto 08 Events haven't been implemented on the new iPods because the majority of iPod owners don't own a Mac, and so can't run iPhoto. This is a real shame as being able to sync, say, your 6 most recent Events, or all Events from the last 12 months, would be very useful indeed.
    Front Row in Leopard now supports iPhoto 08 Events, enabling you to enjoy your photos without manually having to create Albums. If only Apple would next implement this on the iPod Touch and iPhone.

  • Roll/event names in iPhoto 9 folder

    In previous versions of iPhoto, when looking into the iPhoto "package contents," the rolls/events appeared with the name I gave them in the program iPhoto and they therefore could easily be identified.
    Since I updated to iPhoto 9, the rolls/events are identified by the date they were taken... such as 5 nov. 09. This makes searching for missing photos nearly impossible since the photos do not even appear in chronological order! All photos on the 1st of any month and year are followed by all photos on the 2nd of any month and year etc.
    Is there any way to have the roll/events appear as the name given in iPhoto or at least chronologically? I'm afraid that if I change them manually, it will corrupt the file.

    I just went ahead and tried manually changing the event/roll names in a small "trial" library and it opened perfectly well.
    Where did you change the Event title? In the iPhoto Window? Inside the Library Package?
    1. I have too many photos to fit in 1 library and sometimes I like to create libraries with different themes or combine photos from different libraries.
    You can have multiple Libraries and move files between them with iPhoto Library Manager.
    2. I like to have a back up of my photos which is independent of any software so that I can start over in the event that I would like to use something other than iPhoto one day in the unforeseeable future.
    iPhoto stores the files in the Finder, just like you do. In the case of migrating, some apps will facilitate that (such as Aperture which will read the iPhoto Library, for others, File -> Export does the same job.

    But you trust the Finder?
    Would you know how to write a script, or how to get iphoto to list the "events/rolls" in chronological order ? (For example: 2010.01.09 rather than 9 jan. 10?)
    Afraid not. You may be able to do something with Automator.
    If it is not possible to have the photos filed chronologically, do you know how to export all the events (which I give a name beginning with the date)?
    Select an Event and Export it to an appropriately named Folder. To automate this, again, I suggest Automator.
    When I use the export function, I lose the "event/roll" name and end up with a long list of unrecognizable photo files.
    Not if you export Event by Event, and check out the Filename opportunities in the Export dialogue as well.

    Is possible to prevent iPhoto from making an automatic event when I import a photo from Photo stream. It is really annoying because of the fact that I use "events" for keeping my important photo's together (as many of you do I asume). Ofcourse after importing I can just delete it from my event section but is there a way to prevent it?

    No. Photostream creates an Event for each month.
    iPhoto has many other tools for managing and categorising your Photos.
    I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
    Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
    Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 40k library in a couple of seconds.
    So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
    Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
    Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
    add Rating is greater than 4 stars
    The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
    In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

    Perhaps I misunderstood you. You want to have a hierarchy
    Folder: 2000
    ->Contains Event for January, February, etc
    Folder 2001
    -> Contains Event for January, February etc
    That sort of thing? Well with Events, no you can't. Yes you can do that with Albums, but not Events.
    That said, it's a pretty limited way of organising your photos - in fact you might as well just use folders in the Finder. You can find the photos from any year, month, day with the Calendar tool. Simply click on the Search icon on the bottom, then on the the wee drop down and select the calendar tool.
    Want the photos from a particular range - say, June 11 1999 to September 30 2001? Then a Smart Album will do that.
    But the problem is that it's often hard to remember the year/month something happened. Did we go to Disney in 1997 or 98? There are other more useful ways that make your snaps more searchable.
    Here's a canned answer that I offer that suggests some of the richer organising possibilities of iPhoto. It might spark something.

  • Mavericks and iPhoto 7.1.5 - missing events

    Seems like this is a problem lots of folks are having, but none of the answers fits my situation... I think. I have my 85 gig library on an secondary internal drive on my MacPro ('08). Updated to mavericks on Oct 24 or so. Haven't used iPhoto subsequently until today, when I thought I would investigate why my new iPad Air is not showing the events I asked iTunes to send to the Air. I opened iPhoto and most, but not all, of my photos over the past 12 years are no longer visible. The albums, events and slideshow twirlys are all there, but nothing inside. I opened "the package" and there are folders for each year, with event names inside holding my photos. Don't know how to fix this.
    First thought was manually adding the older folders to the Library. Will that work? Will events and album reappear? Would you recommend adding each year's folder to the Library to keep everything together?
    Second thought was to upgrade to the latest iPhoto and hope it can reconnect everything. My fear about this approach is that I already have some sort of corrupted file relationship and adding another layer might make things worse.
    I have run DiskWarrior on the drive and well as Disk Utility. Nothing amiss found.

    You did run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5, right? Or did you keep your iPhoto 7 application in which case you woudn't need to use that updater?  Which is it?
    In either case apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
    1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
    iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
    iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
