Iphoto 11 installation can't find some of my pics; can't get past errors without crashing

Back in 2009 when I got my Mac I made a big mistake: I had iPhoto reference my external hard drive for some of my older photos (was trying to save space at the time). I had all new photos going directly to iPhoto (the correct, recommended way). In 2010 my external hard drive CRASHED and the photos are not accessible, which means iphoto then gave me an error saying the "volume for xxxxx.jsp cannot be found". I was able to move on from this problem by clicking "cancel" to the error (all 200+ of them) and eventually forgot all about the fact that I have so many photos out there without the real image behind the thumbnail.
Fast forward to this past wknd and I attempted to upgrade to iPhoto 11 (completely forgetting that I have thumbnails out there with no real picture behind them). After the upgrade, my library is trying to convert itself to iPhoto 11 and and now iPhoto keeps giving me that same old error of "volume for xxxxx.jsp cannot be found". I try to click through it (like I did back in 2010), but eventually iPhoto crashes after I click through 150+ photos! I've tried this twice.
SO... The question: How can I either remove these alias photos on the back end so that iPhoto 11 doesn't ask me this question anymore as it's trying to upgrade my library, or get iPhoto to allow me to click through this crap?
My idea:
My plan of attack was to revert back to my old iPhoto library (before the upgrade) and iPhoto 08 via Time Machine. Then I was going to delete all the thumbnails from iPhoto 08 that don't have real images behind them and retry the upgrade. I believe I successfully restored my library, but I cannot figure out how to restore the actual iPhoto application from time machine back to 08. I think my only option may be to uninstall iPhoto 11 and reinstall 08. But iPhoto 08 came with my Mac so I don't have a disk just for my iPhoto 08 - it's a system install disk that includes other apps in the app install bundle (like calendar, etc). I don't want to reinstall all the apps because I now have the newer versions with my Lion upgrade. I just want my iPhoto 08 and that's it.
Does that plan make sense or do you have another idea?
Should have listened to everybody to not reference pictures in another location... and not upgrade iPhoto.

Well, it appears I have recovered iPhoto 08 by renaming iPhoto 11 before recovering 08 (wasn't allowing me to write over it originally).
Now I'm deleting everything that doesn't have a real image behind it. I completely underestimated it btw, it's not hundreds of images, it's thousands!
When I'm done deleting I'll either re-upgrade to 11 from 08, or rename iPhoto 11 back to iPhoto to have it be the active iPhoto and then when I open it, it should automatically upgrade my library (I think, lol). Re-upgrading is probably safest.

Try pulling the battery for 10 minutes and putting it back in. Try pressing and holding the power button for a while 15-30 seconds to see if it will respond. Did anything happen to it, drop, submersion, etc. Was it functioning before you charged, When did it last work. Are you sure it charged up and the charger is working.

Actually your suggestions are the ones that i have tried. i have seen that you have tried to help others with this issue and the only one that i could find that said they found the problem said that it was an ilife update issue and it fixed it and i have no available updates. i know it has to do with something in photo stream because it happens when i create a new library and it is loading the photos but i get the message before i reach the maximum 1000 photos. so i've tried updating, new library(first backing up photos and then deleting them from iPhoto), reinstalling OSX many times, running disc utilities. I called Apple the first day i had this issue and i was the first person to call them for support with the retina display and i actually had it escalated to a senior advisor and we thought we fixed the problem but we did not. i am pretty fluent in dealing with troubleshooting these type of issues and this is the first time i'm reaching out to the community. i figured now that the retina has been out some time now that there would be an obvious answer to this issue. thanks for the quick reply.

Can not find some messages in Mail using search

I have some problems with Mail.app I can not find some messages in Mail using search, the strange thing is that sometimes mail search finds some messages, but after rebuilding spotlight index the search displays other messages with the all messages searched using same search criteria. I have also tried to delete Envelope index file from the Mail folder in usr/library and forced mail to import all mailboxes but it started to crash importing some of mailboxes - I deleted the messages from that mailboxes, imported remaining mailboxes and tried to rebuild mailbox, but everything without a successes. Any ideas how to solve it?

LR can't find some of my photos

LR can't find some of my photos even though their location has not changed. When I tell it to locate the file and I find it, LR tells me that file number is associated with another photo.

I am assuming no changes have been made to alter the image, in that this is an original image that you have not worked on in lightroom before.
Find the file in your OS's file manager,
rename the file
In lightroom resync that folder.
(Note: If you have a bunch of images that you have retouched in LR and did not save the metadata,
place the renamed image in a sub folder to a folder that LR has access to or
in LR select all of the images and hit ctrl-s or
import that renamed image)
That image should now be available.

I can't find some of installed apps after upgraded to iOS6.0.1 by sync fom iTunes. when i try to download them from app store again, it shows OPEN button only but not INSTALL button. is there anyone got this problem too?

there is a Java3D Tutorial available at java.sun.com. You need to install the Java3D package in order to develop 3D with Java. This can be downloaded from java.sun.com as well.

If you know what music is not showing up on your iPod, find it in your iTunes library. Right-click the song or group of songs you know are not showing up on the iPod under Artists and choose +Get Info+ from the Menu. Once that window pops up, make sure there is NO check mark next to Compilation. Hope this helps. Let me know.

I can't find some apps in iTunes app store when searching for those apps on an iPad. I can find them when searching on an iPhone. Why is this happening?

These are user-to-user forums, you are not talking to Apple here. If you can't find the app in the store then it may have been removed either via the app developer or by Apple - have you not got a copy of it somewhere e.g. on your computer or on a backup ?

Many plugin vendors haven't updated their plugins to work with x64, or you have to download a special x64 version (Flash and Java for example). Which plugins is it that you are having problems with?

If the filename starts with a dot (.thisfile), then it will be hidden on the Mac.
You can use a 3rd party App, such as EasyFind to search for the file on your Mac, and then re-name (remove the dot)
