IPhoto 11 is moving my geo tagged photos

iPhoto has been moving my geo tagged photos to the wrong place, sometimes it is just moving a few of them to a different town a few miles away but after opening it today it moved about 60 pictures taken in Maui to somewhere in Idaho. Is anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?  I'm getting tired of having to move my photos back to where they were taken as it is not very easy anymore with the newest version of iPhoto.

Sorry but I do not understand your question
As to importing iPhoto simply copies the photos to the iPhoto llibrary - no changes of any sort are made

  • IPhoto 09 not recognising locations for geo-tagged photos

I've been geotagging my photos in iPhoto for over a year now, using HoudahGeo. This works really well and integrates great with sites such as Flickr that support geo-tagged photos.
When I installed iPhoto 09, it only recognises about 30 photos out of several thousand as geo-tagged. These are mainly photos taken with my iPhone, but also some taken with my Sony camera and geotagged with HoudahGeo.
I've checked a sample of the ones it does not put in a location (all taken with the same Sony camera) and the Exif data is there with the correct latitude and longitude but iPhoto 09 sees these fields as blank when I do a Photos > Shows Extended Photo Info, the latitude and longitude fields are blank.
Anyone any ideas what I am doing wrong / how I get the photos to show on the map in iPhoto 09?

I usually import the photos direct to iPhoto from my camera and then use HoudahGeo to geo-tag the original copies of iPhoto in my library. Prior to iPhoto 9 this is not a big issue as it did not use the geo-tag information directly but with iPhoto 9 it's a big issue for users like me as I'd rather not have to export from the camera to a folder, geo-tag and then import to iPhoto 9 as it's messy to say the least.
As I noted - this will not work - iPhoto is a database and it keeps data about the photo in its database - as all database programs do - and changing the data elsewhere will not update the database
Anytime you apply modifications directly to the data in the iPhoto database you are risking corruption and it is recommended that you not ever modify the contents of the iPhoto library
I use an ATP Photo Finder - http://www.atpinc.com/p2-4a.php?sn=00000414 - which applies the Geocodeing data directly to my photos so when I import them they are complete - it simplifies my work flow a lot
Surely Apple will have thought of users like me who geo-tag using a GPS external to the camera and provided some easy method of re-reading the Exif data in the photos in real time?

  • Places doesn't show up for geo-tagged photos from phone (Sony Ericsson)

So I have a Sony Ericsson T715, which has triangulation geo-tagging for photos, I can see their location through the phone no problem.
However, when I import them via the Bluetooth File Browser to my Mac and import them into iPhoto '09, their location does not show up the photos seem to hold no information on this.
Why is this? How should I import them so that this information stays? (Was a reason why I bought this phone.)
I tried looking at the phone/importing through Image Capture, but it doesn't seem to work... keeps randomly opening iPhoto and showing nothing. In Image Capture it shows the photos, but I can't import them - just says it's importing, but does nothing in the end.

No one but the people who made the phone if the data is not there then it is not there and it is not an iPhoto issue - it is a phone issue - their tech support is the place to go
iPhoto handles correctly formatted Geo Date in the correct EXIF fields - getting it there is the soure hardware's job

  • Assign automatically names from places to imported geo-tagged-photos?

    Hello,
I don't know, if I don't understand the Places function or if I use it in the wrong way or if it doesn't work
I tag my photos with geo-coordinates using HoudahGeo or something similar. Then I import these photos to iPhoto09.
But iPhoto09 is only showing the Pin on the map correctly, but the Place under "Information of the photo" is empty.
Even if I create a new place: "my home" and makes the blue circle big enough, iPhoto09 don't recognize new imported photos with geo-coordinates from "my home".
Is it right, that I have to tag my photos twice?
    First: Geotag them with HoudahGeo
Second: Assign a place to the photo in iPhoto09
It would be great, if iPhoto could automatically assign places to new imported photos...
    any ideas?
    Thanks in advacne!

You are correct - you have to manually assign your places to photos to have the custom names show up - I think that the geo coding name look up probably only uses the Google places
Suggest this addition to Apple - iPhoto menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback
You can select a group of photos and right click on one (control click) and set all of them to your home at one time - or you can even do that to an entire event (click on the little "i" in the lower right hand corner)

  • Iphoto on imac27--- transfer photos from Nikon 1 V2 equipped with GP-100... are the geo tag transferred?

Iphoto '11 can accept the geotags from gps device   Nikon GP-100 connected with
a Nikon Mirrorless 1 V2?  Thank you for helping before buying.

Yes - assuming that they are in the proper format in the proper EXIF fields - I have been using GPS labled photos with iPhoto for over three years - using three different Sony GPS cameras, two different iPhones and also a separate GPS tracker adding them to photos using HoudahGeo - it also is a good utility to have around for GEO coding photos and fixing problems - it uses Apple APIs and safely interacts with the iPhoto library and can even take a set of photos and fill in missing GPS data based on other photos taken within a time frame you set - so if you have several cameras you can easily GEO code the photos from the older camera based on the time and location of the Geo coded photos
Note that at least with a Sony it takes a highly variable period of time to acquire the GPS signal so often the first few photos have the previous location recorded - this is usually easily fixed by copying a later photos and using the paste location command to correct the early photos

  • Photo Geo tags are not being used by Places

I have been importing photos into iPhoto with valid geo tags and none of the photos are being shown on the Places map.
When I initially starting using iPhoto I imported some pictures from my iPhone and realised that the pictures were identified on the Places maps automatically, since I have added photos and manually edited the location information directly in Places.
If I import pictures from my iPhone they are not entered into Places and if you check all the location information is blank, if you look at the extended information you can see all the correct GPS information...
    I'm confused..

in your iPhoto preferences is look up places set to "Automatically"? The default is "never" and it must be changed to "automatically" to work.

  • How do I view my pics on a screen sized map based on geo tag like I could in iPhoto?

In iPhoto I was able to view an entire Event or album on a map with pins showing where each of the pics was geo tagged.  In Photos now all I can view is a very small 2 inch square map.  Is it possible to view a grouping of pics in Photos but on a large screen size map?  Do I need an additional app to do this?

    You still can (kind of).
If you open the Photos app and you are in Albums, tap Photos. In Photos, pictures are auto-grouped as Events based on location and date. If you see the location listed, that is tappable. Tap it, and that reveals the map where the photos were taken.
The one thing I don't know is how to see all photos by location. Because the most you can zoom out by time is Years, which means you can only see all photos taken by location within a single year, but not all years. I hope there's a way that I just haven't learned yet.

  • How can I change the geo tag of an image in iPhoto '11?

A lot of my old photos either have no geo tag, or have incorrect tags (apparently I took some pictures in the middle of the Yellow Sea).
So, how do I change or at least erase the geo tag for one or more photos?  I've tried "Rescan Location" and nothing happens.

And did you look at iPhoto help on adding places?
    Add places to your photos
If you have photos that don’t have GPS information, including print photos that were scanned to a disk, you can still map your photos in Places.
    https://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/help/index.html?lang=en#

iPhoto matches recognizable location names you enter, such as “Seattle” or “Milan,” to a mapping database. When you add a location to a single photo or an entire Event, those photos are marked on the Places map.
Or, if you have latitude and longitude information for the place where you shot your photos, you can use that information to add the location.
Important:  You must be connected to the Internet for the Places feature to show photo locations on the map.

    To add a place name:
Select the photo or Event you want to add location information to.Tip:  If you select an Event, the location is added to every photo in that Event. But you can add locations to selected photos without adding locations to them all. To do so, select the photos you want, move your pointer over them, and then click the Info button. Skip to step 3.
Click the Info button in the toolbar to open the Information pane.
Select “Assign a Place” and start typing the location name to see the related names iPhoto suggests. You can type city names, place names (such as “Empire State Building”), and addresses (such as “12345 Main St., Lincoln, NE”).Note:  If no locations appear, check to make sure that iPhoto is set to look up locations.
As related names appear, do one of the following:
If you see the location you want appear in the pop-up menu, choose it. iPhoto marks your selected location with a red marker pin on the map in the Information pane.
If you don’t see the exact location you want in the pop-up menu, choose a location that’s nearby. For example, if you took a photo of a star at Mann’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, you can type “Hollywood” into the location field and then choose the Hollywood, California, option from the pop-up menu. Then go to step 5.A red marker pin appears in the map in the Information pane.
To fine-tune the location, you can click the marker pin (it turns yellow) and drag it to a different location, such as a neighboring town, or a more specific location, such as a particular intersection. You can click the plus and minus buttons to zoom in or out, and drag the map to show a different area.To center the map on the pin, click the circle icon.Note:  You can move marker pins only in the small map that appears below Places in the Information pane. You can’t drag marker pins on the full-size Places map.
When you’re satisfied with the location as it appears in the Information pane, click the arrow next to the location name to view the marker on the full Places map.

Look at the map to confirm the location, and then do one of the following:
If the location is correct, continue to step 5.
If the location is incorrect, retype the latitude and longitude, or drag the pin to a more exact location on the map.You can use the plus and minus buttons to zoom in and out, and drag the map to center it on a better spot.Note:  You can move marker pins only in the small map that appears below Places in the Information pane. • Remove geo-tag from iPhone photos when sending via Mail

I sometimes send companies/people photos I've taken with my iPhone. It is convenient to take them, and send them.
However, I've noticed that the geo-tag is not stripped from the photos when sent via Mail.app
Technically, one could figure out where I live with it — not comfortable with that. I like the feature for my collection in iPhoto, but nowhere else. Facebook strips it out (smartly).
Any suggestions apart from using 3rd party apps?

Thanks guys, but I know I can disable it for future pictures — but I want to keep it for most pictures, but also feel safe that when I'm sharing them, that this information is stripped out.
Any ideas apart from 3rd party apps?
    Maybe a feature request, no?

I have recently purchased an IPad Air. This comes with "IPhoto" as well as it's usual photo App. I do not have a Mac, instead I am syncing it to my windows PC. Is there any way of actually moving a picture around, (arranging photos in a single album), in either of these apps???? They claim to be able to "Organize"  or "arrange" Photos, but for the life of me I can't figure out how......could you recommend any apps that actually allow someone to move individual photos around on an IOS Device.

No, reordering within folders and albums is not supported. the yare arranged automatically by date. I found this, but I have not used any of the apps besides iPhone. You might check the descriptions to see if they do what you need.

  • IPhoto '08 - Moving/merging events causes photos to be lost

    Hello,
I'm trying to move my photos from Picasa to my iMac. I have around 20,000 photos and movies organized into folders on my old PC. I am able to import the pictures to iPhoto but when I try to re-organize events (move some photos from one event to another, merge events) the iPhoto library gets corrupted. *When I click on the thumbnail I can see a big exclamation mark instead of a photo*.
I have faced this issue yesterday (after a few hours spent on organizing pictures in iPhoto!). Today, I tried to re-build the iPhoto library by holding option and command keys - rebuilding did not help. I thought maybe starting from scratch will help - I started from the fresh/empty library in iPhoto, things were moving OK for a while, but at some point I have observed the same problem: I merged two events and I no longer can access certain photos (I can see the exclamation mark instead).
I did not open/modify iPhoto package manually. All the operations were executed via iPhoto application.
While moving photos/merging I can see the set of the following errors in the Console:
    * Unable to move /Users/Dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2000/Tripto_CT/06_BristolCT06.jpg
    to /Users/Dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2000/Mar 6, 2000/06BristolCT06.jpg
There are quite a few of them, but they do not seem to create the problem. I have checked all the photos reported in these messages in the console and I could open them without any issue (no exclamation mark).
*The second type of error seems to be a source of the problem:*
** Couldn't convert path /Users/dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2001/Inne/070_RockyNeckCT14.jpg" to an FSRef to put on the pasteboard.*
*I'm getting these messages in the console after merging two events, and I cannot access my photos under this event any more (getting exclamation mark)*
    The third type of error:
    * Can't make new movie: -2048 from path ..../Originals/2001/...jpg
When I opened the iPhoto Library package yesterday I confirmed that problematic photos are still available in the library (but under a different relative location then the thumbnails).
There seem to be a few serious issues with iPhoto. Apart from the fact that it easily breaks the consistency of the iPhoto library, it does not report ANY error to the user that bad things are happening behind the scenes.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Marcin

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Your issue seems to be with the underlying file system, not with iPhoto.
    Some background:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
When you move files between Events they are also moved on the HD.
Couldn't convert path /Users/dominika/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2001/Inne/070_RockyNeckCT14.jpg" to an FSRef to put on the pasteboard.
means that, for some reason, the file system is unable to execute that move. (That's the reference to the FSRef). However, iPhoto thinks the file was moved, hence the !.
I've simply never seen this issue reported here before. Is everything else on your Mac working correctly?
    First off:
Check your HD for errors with Disk Utility, see if that reports anything.
    Regards
    TD

  • Is there a keyboard stroke for tagging photos in iPhoto?

I would like to learn of a keyboard stroke for tagging photos in iPhoto.  I called apple a while back and was told there is no such shortcut.  You have to manually click on "add a face."  Then, if you want to tag multiple people in one photo, you have to manually click in each tag box to name them.  When iPhoto doesn't automatically detect faces, and the tag boxes are added manually, it is not possible to tab from on tag box to another.  It's infuriating!

I'd suggest posting your question in the iPhoto forum here, as that's where the true experts hang out.  Here's a link for you:

  • Geo tagging in Nokia Photos

    Hi,
I have Nokia N 82, v 31.0.016.  For some of my geo-tagged pictures, after syncing with Nokia Photos, if i want to see my geo-tagged picture in Show item in Map View, i am able to see the picture in Map view of Nokia Photos, but in Timeline view, if i try to flip the same photos which is geo-tagged, it will not show the location where it is taken, Is it a bug ? For geo-tagged image why the location is not stored default on tags ?  Will it be useful, if geo-tagged pictures location tag is updated automatically? Or it has to be made as Manual to store the location tag for all the images which are already geo-tagged?  Hope it sounds clear ...
