IPhoto '11 is slow to open.

Can anything be done to speed its opening?

Maybe What version of iPhoto '11?  What are the symptoms?
Generally turning off sharing, item counts and all web services (like facebook syncing for example) resolves slow opening

  • IPhoto Library very slow to open

Hi all, I am having a very difficult time with iPhoto5 and the size and therefore performance of my library. I have years worth of photo's (>10,000) and iPhoto takes forever to open and do simple tasks.
Please help me with a two part question.
    1) Is there a setting or anything in iPhoto that limits how many of my photo's it will load on starting? Typically, I just want to look at the photos from the last 1-2 months. If there isn't any setting or advise on how to make it open faster and function quicker, then please read part 2.
    2) Does the new iPhoto 6 have improved library handling? I have tried third party library managers, but they have caused as many problems as they have solved.
I certainly cannot be the only photo enthusiast who has a lot of photos to manage. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry I can't be more specific, but MacWorld had a recent article in the past 2-3 months on this very topic - speeding up various pieces of software, iPhoto included.
The only iPhoto tip I recall off the top of my head was to reduce the library's view size down to its minimum, default size. That is, the lower right hand scroll bar for picture size - slide it all the way to the left.
There may be other default settings in addition to that, but that one alone should help if you've been closing iPhoto with pictures viewed in any custom-sized setting.

  • After upgrading to Lion 10.7.1 - iPhoto and other programs slow to open and other problems

Am I alone - having lots of problems with 10.7.1.  iPhoto is slow and when I export photos it exists iphoto then I restart and sometimes it will works.  Safari is slower also. Sometimes it justs hangs and I have to force quit.  iTunes is also slower to open. Almost everytime it goes to a checking library for a long time.
Should I go back to previous version? Will I lose my purchase. I do not have disks for the upgrade.  I do not want to go back - I have a lot of data and always fear of losing it.
Think Apple knows about the problems or am I the only one and have some other problem?

    olegz,
First, thanks for the clear graphics.
Authorization seems to be the hangup here. But instead of dealing with the complications of conflicts in authorization, which might take several weeks to months to iron out - site by site - I urge you to follow a different path.
It looks like you're using Chrome. For this site alone, use either Safari or Firefox, both of which are more likely to have plugins to deal with authorizing your site. Safari is already on your computer, but v.3 of Firefox is stable, too. Frankly, I can't tell you what specifically might be the problem here; but switching browsers will solve the immediate problem.
Sound good? Not so good? Post in this thread so that I or others can solve your problem once and for all!

  • IPhoto 11 is so slow when opening

Very recently my iPhoto has become so slow when opening, it can take anywhere between 3 and 7 minutes, during this time my Macbook just hangs, I can't use any other programs.
I have attempted running the iPhoto first aid, I have picked all of the options on the first aid list and nothing has helped. I have tried quitting everything before opening iPhoto and this makes no difference. I have also deleted some of the photos from my library, but I don't have an exceptionally large library anyway, 1900 jpegs.
I am running iPhoto 11 version 9.4.2 with mountain lion 10.8.2, I have no issues with any other programs being slow.
Once it opens it is generally fine, but it's just turning a 20 second task into a 10 minute task.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have (had?) the identical problem, with just slightly different details (I'm on Lion, not Mountain Lion, and I haven't tried repairing anything yet in iPhoto). iPhoto used to start up in a reasonable amount of time, but it seems since updated to 9.4.2, the startup time is incredibly long (I'll guess 5-10x longer). Admittedly, I have one of the largest iPhoto libraries I've heard of, but I'm just really trying to see why the update changed startup time so much.
Note that I have 500GB of free space on my boot drive, and that creating a new iPhoto library results in a speedy startup.
An oddity I just now see after creating a new library is, when I go back to select my old library at iPhoto launch, there are two libraries listed, with identical names, and identical paths ("iPhoto Library" - /Users/UserName/Pictures/iPhoto Library). Looking in the finder, I only see one Library with that name. After playing around with opening either one, now the first one says "(default)" after it every time.
Note that I just added "(had?)" to the beginning of my post, as it seems like my library has started opening in the normal amount of time since I played around with the libraries (creating a new one, etc.). So maybe just creating a new library and then going back to the default library with help thatgurlwho too?

  • Iphoto began running slow right after the last update. I'm working with raw files. when I have an open moving from photo to photo some times it slows way down, Never did prior to last update. Thanks

iphoto is running slow at times. This never happened until I installed the the last update. The program gets slow when I have an event open moving with the arrows back and forth.  It doesn't make a difference in full screen or smaller

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import a number of raw image files and test to see if the same problem persists.

  • IPhoto is slow at opening a SD Card for import

    Hi all,
I am having problems with my SD card opening in iPhoto but once it is open it is fine, it can take 30 - 60 seconds for the card to be recognized by the iMac, here some of the things I have tried to do:
    1. Formatted the card.
    2. Deleted the PList file.
    3. Held down CMD + OPT and rebuilt the last four options: http://cl.ly/2Orr <-- Link to screen shot.
My next thing I am going to try is reinstalling iPhoto from the Applications Install disk, is this a good idea?
Is there anything else it could be?, the SD Card is nice and snug in the card reader, it has worked straight away in the past. Which leads me to think it's software and not hardware.
Appreciate any feedback you guys & girls can give me.
    Hugh

It could be a preference file other than iPhoto's. Here's how to check that out:
Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard/Snow Leopard
    1 - close all applications.
2 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
3 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.
If that doesn't help the situation try reapplying this updates: Mac OS X v10.6.4 Update (Combo)

  • IPhoto '08 VARY slow

iPhoto '08 VARY slow on my PowerBook G4.

    What has a missing file?
You've really got to give us a lot more information than you have been. Terence is very good but he's no mind reader. Can you describe in detail what's going one when you open and try to use iPhoto?
Also select your hard drive and type Command-I to bring up the Info window. There it will tell you how much free space there is on the hard drive. It's called "Available".

  • IPhoto is severely slowing down my computer.

iPhoto is severely slowing down my computer.  I have 46,578 photos taking up 218.9 GB on an extra 1TB hard drive.   When I have iPhoto open, everything slows down.  I get the little spinning pinwheel constantly in every program.  When iPhoto is closed, things run perfectly.
What is the best way to resolve this issue?  Should I split my iPhot library into two separarte libraries?  If so, how do I do that?   Or should I use Aperature to manage my photos?  Any other solutions?

You might want to ask this question in the iPhoto discussion here.

  • IPhoto 2 so slow

Why is iPhoto 2 so slow on my G3 laptop. The library takes a long time to open. Running os 10.4.11

Well, pfhannan, you don't give us much to go on.
How much RAM is installed in your iBook?
How much space is available on your hard drive?
How many pictures are in your iPhoto Library? Have you added a lot lately? What's the overall size of your iPhoto Library folder in megabytes or gigabytes?
Have you run the daily/weekly/monthly OS X maintenance scripts recently?
Have you had any recent changes or updates in the software installed on your iBook?
Have any of your other programs also slowed down in the same timeframe as iPhoto?
Have you tried any troubleshooting steps at all?
Fill these answers in for us and we'll see what comes to mind.

  • IPhoto is painfully slow

The lag time we are experiencing when we attempt to open up and access iPhoto is unbearable. I fought tooth and nail to get an iMac into our house (my wife is a PC person) and now I look like a fool. Can anyone help explain why iPhoto is so slow?

First off, iOS does not run on Macs.  Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to tell us what Mac OS X version you are running.
Secondly, double click the hard drive, and check the GB available and GB used.   That will tell us if the hard drive is near capacity. View menu -> Show Statusbar if you don't see the GB allotment in the Finder window.
Check Spotlight isn't indexing.  The magnifying glass in the upper right corner is Spotlight.  It will tell you if it is.
Do not install any third party maintenance tools, those can slow down Macs.
Tell us how many photos are in your library.
Tell us if your data is backed up.

  • Very slow to open i photo

very slow to open i photo

What version of iPhoto and of the OS? How much RAM? How much free disk space? Try turning the internet off and see if that improves launch speed - if it does and if you are using Open DNS change to a different DNS server

i currently have a macbook 2.1xersion 10.6.8 and want to update. what can it support? Everything i try, it won't support! I can't even download IPhoto! I can't open anything in my ICloud account either! its not on my current browser nor am i able when logging onto my ICloud account. Can anyone give me some advice besides buying a newer laptop?

Lion 10.7.5 is as far as you can go. You must have at least 2 GBs of installed RAM.
Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. Or you can order directly on the online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • Open and Save Dialogs Slow to Open and Populate

In all of my apps, the Open and Save dialogs have become very slow to open and populate since installing Snow Leopard, when the machine is connected to a Windows server. Disconnecting from the server solves the problem; reconnecting causes it to reappear.
This only happens on some of my machines, and not others
Any thoughts on what this could be. The delay is significant (about 10 seconds in all).

    Roy,
I've got the same problem. I've been charting the slowness, i.e. the time until the app responds and opens the save dialog box, and most apps hover around 2 minutes of waiting.
My home network consists of a belkin n+ router (running only with the N radio, and WPA2 security), one ethernet-connected powerbook with a USB-connected hard disk (640GB+), and my MBP connecting by wireless. The USB HD is used as a Time Machine backup disk, and the backups are extremely slow, on the order of 2 GB's per hour at most.
That said, I called up Apple Tech Support and they had me flash my PRAM, restart the machine, and Reset Safari (since that was the app I called about). These efforts, unfortunately, did not fix the issue.
I will be passing on the fact that Tech Support's efforts did not solve the problem--maybe they'll get back to me on the issue. If so, I'll post it here.
