IPhoto '11 maps showing only grey, is there a solution?

I have been using iPhoto 11 on my Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 for one and a half year now, and since yesterday, after nothing in particular, all my maps are just grey... The location is still there, I can see it because of the name above where the map was supposed to be, but no map itself.. Not there, not in manage my places and certenly not in the big map (which is not only grey, but with a never stoping "loading" clock)...
I don't know what to do, I have found several old threads like:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4044052
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3997428
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3986344
But I have tried both deleting google cookies from Safari as well as turning wifi off and on as suggested and nothing worked, not even temporarely... Neither did deleting com.apple.iphoto.plist preference file... I keep thinking it is not an iPhoto issue, but maybe Safari's as some people have mentioned, because I have tried creating a new user account to test starting a new library from scratch, and the maps are still grey...
I realize that the other threads are old, and mainly about people using iPhoto 9, so I was wondering if there has been a change, and people know how to fix it nowadays...
Any ideas? I am at a loss of what to do know... I really enjoy tagging my photos and having them all organized... :/

You may be right, I don't know why, but today as I turned on my mac everything was back to normal... I decided to comment here because it had been like that for more than a day, I had tried restarting the mac several times as well as the other attemps mentioned on the first post...
It was probably just an issue with the server after all... Thank God! hahaha
If anything changes I will comment again...

  • Why is my preview area showing only greyed out boxes instead of photos?

I am unable to import my photos so they can be seen.  Whether I try to import them from the hard drive, camera card, or my desktop (following the tutorial), I do not see photographs in the preview area, only greyed out boxes instead of photos.  If I imported 6 photos, I have six greyed out (photo-sized) boxes.  The specific photos are there somehow, becuase they are properly named when I scroll the mouse over them, but I see only flat grey, no pictures.  As I said, this happens even when I follow the tutorial and import from my desktop.

    George,
I appreciate you responding to my inquiry.  We (that would be the "royal" we, which would be my husband) finally determined that the monitor was not configured properly.  "We" discovered this out after uninstalling and reinstalling Lightroom several times.
To answer your question, I was trying to import both photos taken in JPEG, as well as RAW, both were problematic.  I could import no images.  It was interesting that I could tell all of the data was coming over (when I floated the cursor over a grayed-out box I could read the data), just not the images.
I have a Nikon D5100.  I purchased Lightroom 5.0 just before now(two days ago), and was trying to install and play with it.  I upgraded to 5.2 as I was going into it for the first time (it is an automatic question).  I knew there was obviously a problem when I couldn't see any images.  Particularly when I went into the tutorials -- it just reemphasized that something was wrong.  Who ever thinks of how their monitor is configured?????
Thank you for following up.  I was very frustrated for many, many hours.

  • IPhoto in dock shows only question mark...

The iPhoto application in my dock shows a question mark, but I cannot reinstall iphoto.  It can't be found on my hard drive. Help!  My iphoto libraries exist, but cannot be opened.  How or where can I get my application back and re-install it?  It came pre-installed when I bought this Mac.

    Did you check the Trash?
Do you have any iLife Discs? Did you look on the Original Install Disc(s) for Optional Installs?
The icons in the Dock are aliases, & the question mark means it doesn't exist where that points to.

  • Installed tiger (formerly panther) now show only grey screen with apple. What should I do?

My Mac mini was 10.3.9 and I recently found that I no longer can view videos. I have a full version Tiger 10.4 so I installed it on the mini. Now it start with the right sound, the grey screen with apple comes up and that is it!! What do I do now?

You can try several trouble shooting steps are described in apple's trouble shooting article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    1) disconnecting all peripherals, including the ethernet cable
    2)  power on system
    1) power off system
    2) restart holding down the shift key until the apple logo appears
    1) resetting pram
    2) hold down command, option, letters p and r and press the power button.  Wait until you hear two chimes
There are more ideas in the trouble shooting article above

  • My iphone 6 plus  lost its colors and shows only grey colors

I reset it to manufacturer settings and it seems to solve the problem (the battery sign was green) but when I restored my setting and content from iTunes it went grey again. I looked through all my settings and I can't find something that fixes it, including the greyscale button.

have you by any chance checked in settings->general->Acessibility
if it's set to display in b&w on purpose ?

  • HT201302 Old iphone 3g has photos on it. When I plug into my imac iphoto and image capture only bring up photos in the camera roll. There were more photos on albums and photo library on the iphone that arent showing up in iphoto and icapture.

My old iphone 3g has photos on it. When I try to get the photos off and onto my imac iphoto and image capture only bring up the camera roll. I have more pictures that arent on the camera roll there are albums and a photo library full of pictures that I want off of this dang phone. I have tried everything and I cant email them to myself because the service has been cut off of the phone. They are stuck on the phone there is there any way to get them off? Am I missing something.

The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which it is synced.
Again, the photo sync is one way.
Did you fail to maintain a backup copy of your old computer?
Not good.  You can e-mail the photos from your iphone.  You do not need to have phoe service for this.  The iphone uses wi-fi.  The photos will never be of the original quality, as they are reduced when synced to iphone.

  • In Photo 1.0, how does one access the map showing where all photos were taken, as could be done previously in iPhoto?

In Photo 1.0, how does one access the map showing where all photos were taken, as could be done previously in iPhoto?

    Hi JohnDory,
The information side-bar from iPhoto has been removed in Photos App, and so it's been converted into a pop-up window showing both the exposure, aperture and so technical photo parameters, as well as the comments, faces and LOCATION for that photo.
This small floating window is shown whenever you click the button in the app title bar, right clicking a specific photo or pressing ⌘i
If you open the albums view (clicking in the name of the album list, NOT an album name, you can see in your left sidebar - which can be shown or hidden) and press ⌘i without selecting a specific photo the Info pop-up will show the map for your whole library (as well as the total amount of photos, videos, GB used, etc)
So, I'm afraid the "Locations" view (which I really loved) from iPhoto has been ripped off... and we can only get "some sort of locations view" by this method.
As for locations... there is no option for manual geotagging (so, setting location to a specific photography which doesn't have it yet)... that really ****** me off
    Regards,

  • IPhoto Places map home button does not show all photo locations in one extent

I recently started populating location information for my photos in iPhoto 2011. Some are pre-loaded from my iPhone, but I also manually added locations for other photos/events. Now I have locations assigned both in the U.S. and in Europe, but when I try to view them all in one extent (via the "home" location button on the Places map), the map centers on Europe and I can't even see the U.S. Did I accidentally change a setting for the "home" location on the map? I cannot find a menu that shows options for the "home" location. Is it possible that locations are too far away from each other to see them all at once? If so, is there a way to reset the center of the map so I don't have to pan over from Europe every time I want to look at the U.S. locations (which is 99% of the time)?
Thanks in advance for the help.

I think I figured it out.
It appears that the iPhoto Places map centers on the extent with the greatest number of individually geo-tagged photos. Rather than centering the map to the area in the middle of all your locations (i.e. one location, one "point"), it actually prioritizes locations by how many individually tagged photos are at that location (i.e. one location, many potential "points").
Secondarily it may be a screen size issue. When I falsely tag a bunch of photos in Hawaii, then I can only see HI and mainland U.S. (no Asia or Europe).
I guess Apple assumes you'll want to see most where you have the most tagged photos. This is unfortunate, however, as I tend to tag overseas locations by the entire Event (many photos placed at one location) vs my domestic photos which may or may not have locations. I guess it'll even out over time, but still, it would be nice to be able to set a specific "home" location or viewing extent.

  • IPhoto's Slide Show allows for only one song !

I love the feature of iPhoto's slide show for a user to accompany a slide show with music from one's iTunes library. However, you can only pick one song. That means that if you have a slide show longer than one songs worth of time (most slide shows will be this way), the song will just keep repeating.
Sure would be nice if there was a way to either play mutiple songs from a user's iTunes playlist. Alternatively, I've heard that the a capability may exist (outside of iTunes) to concatenate multiple songs together to accomplish the same end.
Any suggestions on how to do either of the above?

    Hey Baheno,,
there's so many Roads that lead to Rome!
    Road #1
You can consolidate 2or more songs together in iTunes and name that (2 in 1) big song, Say, "eye of the tiger 2in 1) so this way it will be easy to locate it in the iTunes library while searching through iPhoto. Else you can create a separate albums in iTunes, and you put there only songs that are combined together.
    Road #2
This is the one I prefer. You can export your slide show to QT (Quicktime). it requires some calculation to create a slide show that ends with the end of 1 song. Then you create another QT slide show, that ends with another songs.... etc..... after you merge all the parts together and you have a very long slide show with many songs!
    Transitions:
Keep in mind that exporting to quicktime uses only the desolve transition. Which is fine with me. I have seen so many people doing some power point presentation and slide show with photos and using a array of different transitions..... in the same slide show.....it is disturbing, and takes away from viewing pictures. In cinema, it is said: "the thecniques should remain invisible" so keep the disolve transition... it is the least obtrusive .... your viewers, will never complain that there was no "cube effects"! Only you know about the missing effects!
    Self contained file.
When you export to QT, you now have a file that you can send people through e-mail (given that it is a reasonable size) or you can even post them on web page! like a .mac page.
When you want to view the show, you just click on the file and play it. No need to start iPhoto. No need to have a MAC, it can be seen on a PC too with QT. You can put it on a CD or DVD, and can be viewed on a DVD player.
But when you play your slide show directly from iPhoto, you have to be in front of your mac, you have to have iPhoto open! But you can have you mac connected to a TV in the living room (I do) and then can play the slide show from iPhoto, using a TV-VGA adaptor that will play on your living room TV for a larger crowd to see. It can also be played through the sound system!!!! infinity and beyond!!
If you want more specific on how to export to QT and merge 2,3,4,5 files post back. I will get more into it.
I always export to QT, because this way, in the future, you do not have to mess around again in selecting the photos needed, and selecting the songs in iPhoto. I just click the QT file, and it will always play the same!
    hope this helps!

  • Why does iPhoto slide show show only horizontal stripes?

    Hi,
Suddenly my iPhoto ’08 no longer works. Everything shows up fine in Preview, but when I start the actual slide show only horizontal stripes appear...
    What can I do?
    Thanks,
    Klaus

    Klaus:
Try the following: delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. If that doesn't fix the problem rebuild the library by launching iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and following the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • IPhoto 9.4.1 shows only miniatures, lost the originals

    Hi all,
I had to have my hard drive changed after the last one broke down and decided to upgrade my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion at the same time. Otherwise everything seems to be ok, and I got everything restored from the back ups, exept when I opened iPhoto for the first time, it complained that the library needed to be altered to work with iPhoto 9.4.1 and that after the alteration the photos could not be used with earlier versions. I clicked OK.
This took about an hour after which everything seemed normal, except that when I click a picture to see it bigger (for example full display) it shows only black with exclamation point! When looking the size of the library from Finder, it shows it to be 11Gt, whereas the original library was 149Gt. All the picture miniatures and folder etc are as before, but looks like the alteration has thrown the actual original pictures away. They might still be somewhere on the computer as the free space on the hard drive is still the same as before despite the actual library becoming noticeably smaller.
I still have the originals at the back up drive, but when I tried to import them for the second time, iPhoto gave the same notice that the pictures need to be alteredto work with 9.4.1.
If there is anyone who could help me to restore and use the pictures in their original size, I would be very grateful. All of your help is much appreciated!

The exclamation mark is an indication that the file path to the original/master image file has been broken. Try the following: make a temporary, backup copy of your library if you don't already have one (Control-click on the library and select Duplicate from the contextual menu) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • MyBook shows only iPhoto Library File

I tried to import an iPhoto Library on USB MyBook drive into Aperture. The iPhoto library version was old and not supported by Aperture. Now everytime I try to import a file off the MyBook, import shows only the iPhoto library. Finder shows all of the files and folders on the MyBook ok.

    1. make a back up. No matter how long it takes.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store
    2.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
