IPhoto '11 migration to PSE11
I want to move all of my photos to PSE11 as I am shooting in raw and it is much easier to organize and edit in one software. What will be the best way to migrate the pictures as I have all of my photos organized by event in iPhoto? I do not have to keep them in events in PSE11 if there is an easier way to migrate them, thanks!
Barbara, thank you for the fast response! I have enough disk space as I am putting them in Dropbox to get them off my hard drive. I will backup the files up to an EHD. I did not keyword my photos, so not worried there. You spoke to my dilemma, saw there could be a mass import, but was not sure if I should do that vs. each event (I have 120 events).
I do sense a hesitation with your question around whether I have used organizer enough, is there something I should reconsider before I make the switch? I truly wanted my editing process to be contained to one software now that I am shooting raw, as I am currently importing photos to iPhoto, exporting them to desktop, opening them in PSE camera raw, saving them back to desktop, importing them back to iPhoto. Organizer to Editor just seems so much easier, but I do want to make sure I am thinking through all things before I invest the time to make the change.
Thanks Barbara!!!!

Can't open iphoto after migration to new machine
I just migrated from an older iMac to a new one, and now when I try to open iPhoto I get the message "You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto". I tried updating iPhoto on the new machine, but it seems to be up to date. The old library is VERY large (>35 GB), and I don't want to have to go back and deal with touching up all the photos again. Any ideas?
What version of iPhoto was on the old machine?
What version of iPhoto on the new machine?
How did you move the Library? -
Web sites won't recognize photos added to iPhoto since migrating data
So, I'm stymied. I haven't seen a solution or question already asked that is precisely like my problem, so I thought I'd just ask it myself.
A couple months ago, I did something to bork up the permissions in Lion - if I could be more specific I would. The solution as it eventually dawned on me and the actually really helpful guy at the Genius Bar, after trying literally everything possible besides wiping, was to just wipe the HDD and start over. So that's what I did. I used Time Machine to back up everything so that I could just import the data into the new programs, without simply copying everything over including preferences using Migration Assistant. Lo and behold, it fixed all my permissions problems. But now I have a new problem.
Whenever I want to upload photos to a website, such as Flickr (or any other - I've tried many of them), photos added to my iPhoto '09 library after that migration happened do not appear in the Media browser window. Everything before the migration is there, but nothing after. This is not the case for pictures taken in Photo Booth, interestingly enough.
I've verified and repaired disk permissions, I've cleaned out all the iPhoto plist files, both in Library/Caches and Library/App Support. I've opt+cmd started iPhoto and 1) rebuilt all thumbnails, and 2) examined and repaired iPhoto permissions. I've cleared out all the caches on all my browsers. Nothing has worked. I imagine upgrading to iPhoto '11 may help, but I'm not sure. I'm willing to give that a shot if it's the last option.Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. -
Photo Browser in Mail does not show iPhoto after migration
I've posted in this in the iPhoto '08 thread but I'm thinking this is a Mail issue.
After using the Migration Assistant to move files from my MacBook to my iMac, when in Mail, the "Photo Browser" shows photos from Photo Booth but no longer from iPhoto.
Ideas? Many thanks!Have been working with LarryHN in an iPhoto thread. He posted this SOLUTION. Yes!!!

IPhoto 11 Migration Issue: Unique Circumstance (Boot Drive Crash)
Hello good folk,
I have a migration issue with iPhoto 11 due to a boot drive crash.
The issue: I have imported my library database file and all of my 25,000 photos into a clean install of iPhoto 11. All of the events are imported, but all of the photos appear in the very first event. All of the other events are populated with the correct number of photos, but none of the actual photos have been linked.
I know all about holding down option-click and option-command-click to rebuild libraries, directories, etc., as I have read about in multiple posts. But many tries haven't gotten me to success.
Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?
Here are the specifics of the chain of events, in case it helps [sorry for all the details, but it might help]:
1. Was running iPhoto 09 in 10.5.8, my boot drive bit the dust.
2. I was able to save most of my data from the drive. Due to corrupt files, I was forced to back up unconventionally: instead of saving the entire library, which I could not do, I unpacked the iPhoto library and, from the Originals folder, I copied over entire year folders (2002, 2003, etc.) onto a non-boot drive. This worked.
3. I then installed the new boot HD and installed 10.6.X.
4. I installed fresh copy of iPhoto 11 and updated the software.
5. In iPhoto 11, I threw away the database and replaced with the recovered database from the old boot drive.
6. I copied all of the year photo folders (from the "Originals" folder on the manual backup disk) wholesale into the "Masters" folder of the new iPhoto 11 install.
7. [I could not use Migration Assistant to do this because Migration Assistant, for some reason, will not migrate from a non-boot drive that's installed internally on my Mac Pro.]
8. I option-command-clicked open iPhoto and selected:
-- Repair iPhoto Library Database
-- Rebuild small thumbnails
-- Rebuild all thumbnails
-- Examine/repair permissions.
9. I did this twice. The first time, the events from the database installed correctly, but the photos did not show up. The second time, after a very long time rebuilding the thumbnails, all 25,000 photos showed up, but in the very first event. All of the other events remain blank.
10. I then did an option-click, and chose to open the main library. I did that, but nothing changed.
11. Perhaps interestingly, when I option-click, it says that my manual backup from my internal drive -- where I did my emergency backup -- remains as the "default." The main iPhoto library is not the default.
12. That's where I am now. I really don't want to have to install manually without the data, when all of the events imported fine, and all of the photos are there, but in the wrong event.
Sorry for the long-windedness. Any suggestions are much appreciated!
JohnI have imported my library database file and all of my 25,000 photos into a clean install of iPhoto 11. All of the events are imported, but all of the photos appear in the very first event. All of the other events are populated with the correct number of photos, but none of the actual photos have been linked.
You can not "Import" an old iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it is not the way it works - if your old iPhoto library is available you simply place it in the pictures folder and launch iPhoto - no importing involved
you can not piece together an iPhoto library - which is why having a backup up is critical to avoid lost data
If your iPhoto library is not available as a single entity then you will have to start over and create a new library and import the photos into it losing all edits, metadata changes, etc
And if the future remember to always backup soon and often -it is the only way to avoid data loss due to failures - hardware, software and/or human

IPhoto and Migration Assistant
Hello,
I'm looking for assistance because the iPhoto library that I moved from my MacBook to my iMac shows up on my iMac but when I try to access the photos I get the following error "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." The MacBook had iPhoto 6 on it and the iMac has iPhoto 08 (Version 7.1.2). Any suggestions?
Thank youCurtis:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Others have reported problems with Migration Assistant and iPhoto libraries. Connect the two computers on a LAN, a simple ethernet cable between the two will do, and just copy the library from the MB to the Pictures folder on the iMac. As a precaution you might then download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name in the owner section and Staff in the group section. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This is just to make sure the ownership and access is correct before trying to open the library with iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
I have an iPhoto Library of some 20000 photos. When Migrating to Aperture, it seems that the recommendation is to use multiple libraries. I have already loaded the entire iPhoto library and given the differences in the look at feel between the two applications am considering deleting the Library and starting again. My question(s) are, Is it better just to Load the iPhoto library as is and the from that point on begin building new libraries as new photos are added, or is it better to break the iPhoto Library up and import to the new Libraries, or is it better to load the old Library and then Break it up, in this case given the different look and feel, what is the best way to get this done?
There should be no need to split in to multiple libraries, not 20k images unless you have your own reasons for doing so.
A lot of folks seem to have problems due to differences in the way the two Aps work. I suggest you do a little work with Aperture and a few images to feel your way around how it differers from iPhoto, before going ahead. Allan -
I just bought an iMac and went through the migration assistant in copying all files and applications from my MacBook. However, none of my iweb sites or iphoto pics copied over to the new mac. Any suggestions on how I can merge this information?
Connect the computers with a FireWire cable, start up the old machine with the T key held down, and then move the items Pictures/iPhoto Library/ and Library/Application Support/iWeb/ from the home folder on the old machine, which is in /Users/ by default, to that on the new one.

Missing photos in Iphoto Data migration between iMacs
OMG, Please help! I got my new iMac yesterday and did a data migration from my old mac. 2 hours later all my files and stuff are on the new machine.
I just went into iPhoto and it says there are 16,000 pics there, but instead of photos all I have are 16,000 blank boxes. You click on them as if you were opening a pic and all you get is a triangle with an exclamation mark in the middle.
Have I lost all my pictures??it says iPhoto libary 129.82 GB
Sounds like the photos are there anyway.
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

IPhoto Library migration to windows server
Hello!
I know this has been discussed but I was unable to find it again.
Due to my massive amount of pictures, I have run out of space on my iMac's internal hard drive.
I would like to move my iPhoto library over to my Home Server which runs Windows Home Server (Go figure)
When I try to do such a thing it says invalid file format?
SO - 1) is iPhoto capable of doing this?
1a) If not, is Aperture capable?
1b) If Aperture is, how do I accomplish this?
Thank you in advance for any help in this mattNo.
No.
Ergo No.
The iPhoto and Aperture libraries must live on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). What you can do is run a Referenced Library, with the Masters stored on the server. For a variety of reasons you really, really don't want to use iPhoto in this configuration. It's pretty straightforward to do this with Aperture's Relocate Masters command - check out the help.

Manually migrating iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion..
Hi all,
I received a shiny new iMac yesterday and in my haste to get it up and running, I began to run the migration assistant on wi-fi. Unfortunately, my 2006 macbook model is so old that my firewire cables don't actually fit the firewire port on the back of the iMac!!
11 hours later, there was still 40 hours left to go. At this point I manually quit the migration assistant. Partly because I have to work and to work I need to use a computer and partly because I realised that I don't want all the old crud from my previous system.. all I want is my iTunes (songs, apps, playlists etc) and my iPhoto to migrate.
The original admin account that the migration assistant was going to replace was still there. Everything seems to be working fine... I did a quick repair of disk permissions and all seems fine. So, I think I flirted with danger by quiting the migration assistant, but danger doesn't seem to have flirted back.
I've searched high and low on the web and I can't find any advice on migrating just your iPhoto and iTunes from Snow Leopard to Lion. I did read a post somewhere (relating to a migration to Leopard) where someone wrote that, for iPhoto, you simply had to replace your iPhoto Library in your pictures folder on the destination machine and then simply start iPhoto. iPhoto would upgrade the databases etc and all would be fine in the world. I cannot find a post online that suggests that this is also the case for Lion.
Can anyone here give me some hints on how to manually migrate the iPhoto and iTunes libraries over (and still preserve playlists in iTunes, albums/events in iPhoto etc)?
I figure that I cannot be the only person in the world who wants a "fresh start" on their machine, with the exception of iPhoto and iTunes.Resident apple gurus at work have advised me to use the migration assistant and plug an ethernet cable between machines.
I'll give this a go and then go through the process of removing and cleaning up whatever old data I can.. but if someone posts a response to this question for me, I'll happily roll back in time-machine and go again in a cleaner way. :-) -
What is the best way to migrate PSE6 Catalog (Wxp) to new computer W7, PSE11?
What is the best way to migrate PSE6 Catalog (Wxp) to new computer W7, PSE11? Previous PSE6 recovery (Wxp) after a failed HD resulted in pictures showing but not opening due to connection issues. Had to restore pictures from backup and rebuild the catalog and albums. Found a third party fix afterwards that has no support past PSE8. Trying to make this migration to PSE11 painless.

That's a very common and classical situation :
http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
Just make sure that your backup to the external drive is ok : you should find a 'backup.tly' file in the folder.
Use the PSE11 organizer to restore from the PSE7 backup : the first step restores all your media files, the second automatically does a catalog conversion to the PSE11 format.
Read the note in the above link about restoring from XP to ulterior Win OS. You can also restore to a 'custom' location. For instance in a 'C:\My new library' folder. Make sure that master folder is accessible to all users, and if you want, you can move the catalog (database) itself from that location to the default location : catalog manager, option to move catalogs to location accessible to all users. -
I seem to have two incomplete versions after migrating
Bought 2014 Mac Mini to eventually replace 2009 Mac Mini running Lion 10.7.5. Connected via ethernet cable and did set up and migration assistant. Somewhere in the process it needed me to rename an account and now I have two admin users but neither version has all my stuff.
One version has no contacts, calendar, iTunes and the iCloud drive spins endlessly trying to set up. iPhoto did migrate. My documents from the 2009 are there too. Mail and contacts are not checked in the iCloud drive set up but I can't get access to change. I get the message iTunes needs a library to continue. with quit, create library and choose library as choices.
Second version does not have iPhoto or documents. iCloud drive is not set up. Does have contacts, iCal, iTunes.
I do not know how to get everything in one account!
I still have the ethernet connected to both. Is there a specific way to disconnect without causing an further issues? . I am afraid of disconnecting anything for fear of making it worse!
I need to keep the 2009 mini as I am taking an online class and have various programs downloaded to it that I don't want to go through the process of doing that on the new mini. I would like to delete photos and documents from it in hopes of speeding it up a bit when I am 100% sure everything will be on the 2014 mini. So far, since everything is still connected I am sitting here with two mice, one wired keyboard that I move from one computer to the other and one HDTV monitor. I have the 2014 mini connected to the HDTV via a HDTV cable and that works fine. I have the 2009 connected with an adapter and switch from RGB to HDTV when I want to use the 2014.
At some point I need to get MS Office moved from the 2009 to the 2014 but that is last on my list.
I am a beginner and need very specific directions. I have learned everything I know via Apple support communities. Thank you for any help!Turn off File Sharing if it's enabled then disconnect the Ethernet cable. Don't do this if you have a transfer in progress.

I asked a similar question on the iPhoto discussion list earlier today, and have had no luck, so now I will try the Time Machine discussion list.
I want to know why Time Machine "allowed" iPhoto '08 to migrate my backed up photo files and directory structures to the new "package" structure without my knowledge or permission?
I want to know why, when I go to the folder in Time Machine that contains my archived/backed up photos, the package directory backed up on, say, June 29th 2008 points to pictures that I uploaded LAST WEEKEND?
Does this mean that Time Machine's back ups of iPhoto are moot, b/c once corruption occurs, the fact that there is "one package to rule them all" will also mean that if a corrupted iPhoto db is backed up, then I will no longer have an uncorrupted file, even if my back ups go back months?
I understand iPhoto '08 updating my current photos in the Unix directory into the new "package" structure. I understand that the new "package" structure is supposed to save us from ourselves. I have read Devlin's advice on how to access the package files. I don't want advice on any of that.
I simply want to know WHY Apple has designed a software package that migrates BACKED UP DATA to the new, "approved" structure? That is like Microsoft designing software to seek out every .doc file I have and changing it to .docx.
I didn't want or expect my archives to be updated, and please save me the speech on how the package structure will save me from corrupting my iPhoto files, and how I "shouldn't" access my files through Finder, in the first place. I'm not interested in lectures on how I use my own computer.
I simply want to know why Time Machine allowed a software program to migrate the structure of my "archival" files without my knowledge or permission.
I also want to know if there is a way I can "undo" the iPhoto '08 migration in my back up files or if I am just stuck with this now. I plan to uninstall iLife '08, as after one weekend I am rather disgusted with iPhoto; I'll leave out my opinion of "Mobile Me".
I discovered this (the migration of my photo files to the iPhoto '08 package) when I went to Time Machine to reinstall my system to where it was prior to the install of iLife '08. I work in digital preservation (as much as there is such a field) and the entire idea that Apple has designed software to search around and migrate someone's archival data without the permission or knowledge of the owner is pretty stupid from a legal perspective.I'll take the question to the Apple Genius Bar.

IPhoto crashes ~ 15 seconds after launch
-- I had iPhoto 09 on a Mac with OS 10.5 and it worked fine.
-- I then did a final Time Machine backup of the drive
-- booted the Mac from a Mac OS 10.7 (Lion) install flash drive
-- reformatted the boot drive and did clean install of Lion
-- at the end of the install process I created a new "dummy" user account
-- I fully updated to Mac OS 10.7.3 and iLife '11 (including all updates to iPhoto)
-- Used Migration Assistant to import my old user folder from the Time Machine backup drive, then logged into that old account.
-- Everything seemed fine until I launch iPhoto
-- iPhoto began the upgrade process and seemed to complete it, but once the upgrade was complete and the main iPhoto window appeared, iPhoto crashed.
-- After troubleshooting, I now know that the issue isn't the old library being corrupted because iPhoto consistently crashes about 15 seconds after startup, even if I create a new iPhoto Library.
Below is the Crash Log that is created after the following:
---- delete all iPhoto preferences from the Preferences folder in my User account
---- Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new library
---- after about 15 seconds iPhoto crashes. Here's the log - any help figuring out what's going on is appreciated!

506 com.apple.iPhoto 0xWelcome to the Apple Discussions. If iPhoto crashes in the other account that's an indication that a reinstall of iPhoto is warranted. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Install iPhoto from the disk it came on, run the latest updaters, repair permissions and try again.
