IPhoto 11 - older photos only show as thumbnails

I have upgraded both my MacBook Pros to iPhoto 11 and now some of my older photos only show as thumbnails and won't go full screen. I just get a triangle with a "!" on the screen.

Give the following a try.  This will create a library with all of the full sized master files that are currently inside your iPhoto Libray package:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

How can you shrink the size of an upright picture to make it smaller without losing any of the detail in it (in Slideshow)??? At the moment, if I view them on my Mac Laptop, landscape photos fill the screen, but portrait photos only show the middle part, so I loose the top and bottom of the picture.  Have tried cropping, but that means I lose top and bottom part of the picture, so that is not the answer!!

Homestly haven't a clue what's going on there.
Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.

I replaced iPod touch because of broken screen, photos were backed up to iCloud.  I cannot find the older photos, only the ones taken with the replaced iPod.  How do I get old iPod pictures from iCloud?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Are you referring to photos that are backed up or photos in photostream.

  • Imported Photos only show up as Rejected

    Hey All,
Did some searching but couldn't find anything that described my problem. I recently imported photos from 3 memory cards into three separate new projects. All of the imports worked fine (was importing directly from camera) and I left Aperture to create the previews/thumbnails etc. I came back to everything completed and shut down the program.
The next day I notice the start up screen doesn't tell me I have any pictures that haven't been updated in a vault (odd because I hadn't updated with the newly added pictures). I find all the images in all three projects are not there. I go into the external drive that houses my Aperture library, 'Open Contents' etc and get to the new projects, all the photos are there physically on the drive, inside of my Aperture managed library but do not show up in Aperture at all. Nothing in my 'Added in last week' folder, nothing in Rejected folder, nothing in All Photos, and nothing in the individual projects. On a whim I decide to search rejected photos in each project. Low and behold there they are. Okay, I re-tag every photo with 1 star, they show up now in unrated or better, but this goes away when I re-boot Aperture. Now I have a bunch of photos rated at one star but only show up when I search 'rejected' in the individual projects and don't show up in any of other folders I mentiond or any other search.
    I tried:
    -updating Aperture
-copy/pasting the projects out of aperture library and importing whole projects.
    -moving pictures to different projects
    -re creating previews
Nothing has worked, anyone heard of this before?

    Just to clarify,
    1) is the problem limited to the same exact photos, no matter where they go in the Library?
    2) Did you try making fresh new versions from the same masters, and deleting the old probelatic versions, to see if new versions had the same problem?
    3) were all photos from the same import session affected, or, all imports from the same day?
    4) Have you had any further problem with newer imports (test shoot & import)?
If "YES" to #1, there has to be a common link between these individual photos. It's highly unlikely that the master files are at fault, because rejects/ratings seem to be Aperture-specific metadata tags and therefore assigned only to the versions, not masters. See if generating new versions from the master file might fix the problem, but DO NOT lift-stamp any metadata from old problematic versions onto new ones.
Hope this helps narrow things down.
    best,
    Jin

  • Newly imported photos only show up in "photos" and not "events"

When I import photos, why do they now only show up in the "photos" section of my library, and not "events"? I see them in photo stream, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the left-hand column in iPhoto, the sections under "Library."  I saw on the answer to someone else's question that photos can only be in one place at a time, either "events" or photo stream, but then why are they also showing up in "photos"? And I use the "events" thing more than I do photo stream, so I'd like to be able to just automatically have all my events there--OR see photo stream organized by events as well. Does anyone have any suggestions?

why do they now only show up in the "photos" section of my library, and not "events"?
If they are in the Photos listing then they are also in Events somewhere. These are two view of exactly the same material - two windows into the same room, as it were.
Right-click one of the photos and select 'Show Event' from the resulting menu.

  • NEF files only show as thumbnail size in preview window

I am using PSE 8 with Bridge CS4 and camera RAW 5.5 on MAC OS X 10.5.8
I recently upgraded from a D80 to a D300s. when i import  RAW files into bridge from the 300s they only show up as thumbnail size in the preview window. It was fine with the D80 and JPEG's from the 300 show up large as well
    any thoughts?

In Bridge, select the affected raw file and click Tools>>Cache>>Purge Cache for folder.
If this does not work, you might want to increase the cache size in Bridge>>Preferences>>Cache.

  • Iphoto 6 photos not showing at all

I have been using Iphoto 6 for a while now and after I updated the software, most of my pictures show up as grey boxes with an exclamation mark on them. How do i see my pictures?? When I double click on the pictures that are actually seen, they pop up as grey boxes once again.
    Please help!

The ! or ? turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
The most common cause of this is User Activity in the iPhoto Library Folder in the Finder.
Have you altered, moved or renamed anything in the iPhoto Library Folder?
If you haven't, then try rebuilding the database. Hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose the top three options.
    If that fails:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • With last update to aperture  photos only show in photos and not in folders. Any idea?

With latest update my photos are only showing in photos and not individual projects. Though when I mouse over project it gives me number of photos? Any ideas?

Do you have a filter enabled? Anything other than Showing All in the search field?

  • Photos only show as miniatures

    Hi!
I just bought a MacBook Air (as my MacBook Pro was stolen), and just managed to get my backup in place. i have one problem with IPhoto11. Initially I can see the pictures folders in the overview, but as soon as I scroll the pictures disapperar leaving a grey square. When I click on a folder, I can see the photos as miniatures but the big presentation is grey (se attachment). Is there anybody that could give me any advice?
To make it even more strange, pictures taken and added to IPhoto before January 9 this year I can se in the fupp, but pictures taken and added after that I can only see as miniatures at the bottom of the folder, but the big presentations os gray. Tried to attach a screen save but the programme didn't allow it.
    Best regards, Anders

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • My iphoto library is only showing one picture at a time

While working in iphoto today my library browser went from multiple pictures to only one.  The library shows 5K plus pictures, but can't budge off the one picture.  What's up?

    It was the slider, right?

  • Photos only showing in events, not last import or last 12 months

    How do I fix??

Select a pic in Last Import and Right-Click on it. Choose 'Show Event' from the menu. This will bring you to the Event containing the photo.
If the photo is in Last Import, then the photo is in the Library somewhere,  just not where you expect it to be. Usual causes: the date on your camera is wrong, and so the date on the photo is wrong, or the sorting of the Events has changed (View Menu -> Sort Events)

  • Google Map photos only show at 100% zoom

    Running Firefox 19.0.2
When using Google Map and selecting "photos" they do not appear unless zoom is set at 100%.
(hover over top right icon "satellite" and select "photos" from drop down menu)
I have tried safe mode and still occurs.
(I initially thought safe mode fixed it and was blaming NoSquint add-on, but it was only because zoom went back to 100% in safe mode)
Works OK in IE - I can zoom and keep photos.

I get the same problem you do. Unfortunately, Google Maps is too complicated for me to debug , so I don't have an explanation for why it's happening.

  • Places in photo only shows 2 push pins

In photos on the top it has 3 butons, pictures- albums- places. When you pick places there are only 2 push pins one with one photo in Africa and another with 64 photos in Florida. After the first sync there were 168 push pins all over with many photos for each. What happened to all the places?

If you have tried all these:
    1) Using a metadata edit program, verify all the photos in question still has the correct geotagging.
    2) Press and Hold the Home and Wake Sleep buttons until the Apple Logo appears.
    3) If that doesn't work, try a reset, To reset go to Settings, General, Reset, Reset.
    4) Restore the ipad from itunes.
...then you probably need to take the ipad in for testing at an apple store.

  • Tiff Photos now only showing Thumbnails in Preview

Since upgrading to CS6 TIFF photos only show as thumbnails in the large preview window, and Description metadata is not showing. The same photos in JPEG format display correctly and Description data shows. I'm using Mac OS X 10.9.1. I've used Bridge for 15 years and never had this problem. I've searched Adobe Help and forums and can't find this discussed. Has CS6 changed its handling of TIFF files or has a setting changed on me.
    Thank you.
    Ross Hurley

Did you find a solution? I have the same problem, have pueched the cache etc but still all I get with a tiff is a thumbnail, if I zoom in it pixelatesbecause it really only is a thumbnail, although when i click to open in photoshop it opens fine. Any ideas?
