IPhoto 11 plus Photoshop Elements 10 or Just Photoshop Elements 10?

I am a recent convert to iMac having started with iphone and then ipad.  I now what to organise a couple of years complete unorganised photos.  I would appreciate recommendations on whether I should use iphoto 11 and photoshop elements as my external editor or just use photoshop elements 10 as both my organiser and editor? I am using Lion as my OS.
As inferred above I have no tags, albums or libraries my photos are completely unorganised so no converting - looking at clean imports to either programme but would be interested in pros and cons of both routes suggested.  For example would using iphoto plus elements rather than just elements give me better integration with iphone 4, ipad 2 and apple TV.
Thanks in advance
Mark

You can use Photoshop Elememts 10 with iPhoto just as you can with Photoshop or any other image editor.  The organization features of Elements is essentially file/folder management and really not digital asset management like iPhoto.  If you decide to use PSE with iPhoto the following should be of some help:
Using Photoshop CS3 or Photoshop Elements 9/10 as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's Advanced Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been edited and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9/10 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
s  I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatibility be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use  iPhoto's editing mode as the default and PS/PSE  as the otpional editor  once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Edit Photos:  in iPhoto".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto using the Edit button or Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in iPhoto" or in PS/PSE by Control-clicking on the thumbnail and selecting "Edit in External Editor" in the Contextual menu.
This way you get the best of both worlds.

  • Importing photos from iPhoto 11 into Photoshop Elements 9

    Hi,
I am trying to import the iPhoto events into Photoshop Elements 9 Organizer. All the photos are imported into one single catalog. How do I import into separate catalogs in the Elements Organizer, just like separate events in iPhoto?

A question for Adobe's Photoshop Elements forum, I would have thought.

  • Using iPhoto 11 with Photoshop Elements 10

I have just successfully purchased & loaded Elements 10 to enhance my editing/organising facility. However, when I right click on a selected photo in iPhoto and select ''Use external editor" - although it immediately loads the Elements editing workspace, it doesn't load the photo.
I've tried changing the default editing in iPhoto preferences (Advanced) to Elements 10, but again when I select Edit on the iPhoto home page, it opens up the Elements editing workspace - but not the photo!
What am I doing wrong here?
I could always drag & drop from iPhoto to Elements 10 - but I shouldn't have to do that should I ?

In the iPhoto Preferences set to Edit Photos in iPhoto.
Then if you want to use your external editor you can right click on the image and select 'Edit in External Editor'...
    Best of both worlds.

  • Iphoto Editing with Photoshop Elements 9

I am going into Iphoto, clicking the Edit button and it brings up Photoshop Elements 9.  I make changes, they
look OK so I save it.  When I get back to IPhoto, it looks like the change has been made.  However when I go
back later in the day and click on the updated photo and there is a triangle with an exclamation point in the middle.
This means it can't find the original.  They're all located in Iphoto, what is happening?  Why does it look like the changes
are make and then I can't find them?

I do use a Mac, so I don¹t think versions is an issue. I would rather
pictures edited in PSE, which began life in iPhoto, should always be saved
back to iPhoto, as they were in Elements 8. That is not happening. Neither
do I know where to find pictures that PSE has saved.

    >> The save dialog sees an original and asks for permission to change it.
If you see the save as dialog you don't have your saving files preference set
correctly. To make versions, you must set it to Save over Original.
However, note that there is a big ol' bug in the mac version that if you even
open that particular preference window (even if you don't change anything
there) PSE will no longer add file extensions when you save. When using PSE as
external editor it doesn't matter so much, but if you ever save to the desktop
you will need to add the file extension manually to the saved file.

  • Can anyone tell me how to get my pics from iPhoto to Adobe Photoshop Elements?

Can anyone tell me how to get my pics in iPhoto into Adobe Photoshop Elements?

Are you talking about iPhoto for iOS or iPhoto on your Mac?
If iPhoto for iOS export the photo to iTunes. Then sync with your Mac and drag the photos out of the file sharing section of iTunes on your Mac. Then open them in Adobe Photoshop Elements.
If iPhoto on your Mac then export the photos. I believe that's Menu > File > Export.
Select export at full resolution and choose a location for the files. Once they have been exported you can open them in Adobe Photoshop Elements.

  • IPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10 - external editor issue

My Imac has been upgraded to Mountain Lion, iPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10. Now right-clicking shots in iPhoto browser brings up external editor choice and will then open PSE 10, but not the shot ( I have to drag shot to desktop, open with PSE10, save, import back to iPhoto - a huge step backwards). Same software ( iPhoto 11 and PSE10) works fine, albeit slowly) on my Macbook Pro running Lion. Please help?

You're selecting the wrong item as the editor in the Adobe PSE folder.  It's fooled a lot of us in the past.  This is the file you want to select as the external editor:
I may be preaching to the choir here but maybe the following will enlighten a bit on using PSE as the external editor:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
My apologies if you've already seen the above.

  • Iphoto '08 and Photoshop

I just upgraded to Ilife '08 and now I am unable to view my iPhoto library in Photoshop. I can see the "iPhoto" file, but it is 'greyed" out and not an option I can click on. I've looked all over trying to figure out what's wrong...I can open iPhoto and click "edit" and the photo comes up in Photoshop, but I can not open anything in my iPhoto library from within Photoshop. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance !
    Shawn

The important part was "that's what you're supposed to do".
Yes, it was not necessary before, but directly accessing files under the library is the main cause of problems that bring people to this forum looking for help. Now, there is an extra step to remind you of the fact that you really shouldn't be working with the files directly once they've been imported to iPhoto.
As for other machines-and programs-most of them are probably not like iPhoto. (ie, most other programs are image viewers that don't require import and aren't based on a database that offers the photo management capabilities provided by iPhoto)
There are already several (read 'A LOT') of posts on this board asking the same question and even more people complaining of lost or damaged photo libraries as a direct result of users messing around with the files in Finder.

I am trying to print a color photo on my MacBook Pro from iPhoto (not using Photoshop) using Epson 2200 printer, and everything I do in the Color Matching and Print Settings results in a photo with a pink cast to it. What am I doing wrong?

Have you checked the ink cartridges and made sure the nozzles are clear? Are you able to print from outside of iPhoto with the correct color?
Try the following: make temporary copy of the library and do the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

You need to have iPhoto 11 v9.6 (which you can get from the App Store) to use iPhoto on Yosemite. If you already have iPhoto 11 then the update is free. Otherwise it's a purchase.

  • Opening IPhoto Library in Photoshop 4.0

I am having problems accessing the IPhoto Library through Photoshop 4.0. Before I upgraded my IPhoto the library was considered an ordinary folder but now it is "greyed" out. It seems I can only access my pictures through IPhoto itself. What should I do?

    Mianne:
When you edit with Photoshop do you save the edited file to the desktop or to the original location. If you do the later iPhoto will not know that it's been edited and the thumbnail will not show the edit. If you want to use iPhoto as the primary editor for your iPhoto pictures then set iPhoto's General preferences like this. When you double-click on a thumbnail in iPhoto it will open that file in PS. When you've finished the edit and start to save you'll get one of these two options. Pick the one you want and proceed.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

My albums and slideshows disappeared from the left column when I ejected a Canon camera after a download.  My version of iPhoto '08 (V7.1.5(378)) had just crashed when I first connected the Canon camera to download.  I restarted iPhoto.....successfully downloaded 22 photos, and ejected Canon camera, upon which albums & slideshows highlighted blue and disappeared from the left column.  The photos still seem to be under the EVENTS and PHOTOS in the LIBRARY.  Any thoughts?

    Restore from your back up.
