IPhoto '11 problem downloading pix w/external card reader

Lately my external card reader won't download pix to iPhoto. The device shows up on the desktop but not within iPhoto so no pictures are downloaded. Bought a new reader (Hoodman), but problem remains. Tried restarts, which sometimes works but now mostly doesn't. This only started happening sporadically a few months ago. The old card reader works just fine on my husband's iMac, so I don't think it's the card reader's fault. Anyone else having these problems? Or have a fix? I've got a bunch of pictures to get into iPhoto and am stymied. I'm on an iMac, Snow Leopard (10.6.8), using iPhoto '11 (v9.2.3).

Thanks for the suggestion. But after creating that test library you suggested I still don't know how to get back to my original library when I launch iPhoto. Could you please guide me through that? I've never done this before and am nervous about the whereabouts of all those 1000s of pix I have (even tho I'm backed up w/Time Machine).
By the way, I just noticed a similar discussion about a year ago with the identical problem, numerous reports of the external card driver suddenly not being recognized by iPhoto. Sounds like an unsolved, ongoing problem. Guess I need to file a report with Apple.

Yes, I know. Which is why I won't argue over it.   As I said I've never had an issue with it when travelling.
And Apparently the purchase is working fine for the OP, its the actual download that gets hung up.
Anyway, If the Purchase is going fine, then its more likely an issue with the internet connection.

  • EJECTING EXTERNAL CARD READER

I use a Canon Rebel XT (first generation). The compact flash for this camera is usually too big for newer computer's, so I have a Dynex External Card Reader that accomodates 5 different size compact flash disks, one of which accomodates the canon rebel xt's gigantic card. my problem is not being able to "eject" the disk, or the device properly. it appears as "NO NAME,"  when I attach its USB, determines "new pictures," gives me the option to "import all, or "new." but when i've finished importing the pictures, I cannot figure out how to properly "eject" the device. and so I've tried using Finder to locate and eject for the usb before pulling the compact disk out of the reader as not to possibly damage any pictures, but no matter what I do, I get a warning that reads, "to avoid damageing images on your disk, properly eject the device first." How do I do this?????? pleaseeeeee
    thanks
    francesca

It should show up as NoName in the source pane on the left in iPhoto - click the dismount icon to the right of the name
same should be true in the finder - click the dismount icon to the right of the name
and using the dismount key on your keyboard should do it if you have a standard Apple keyboard

Can you download pictures from a card reader to the iPhone?

That would depend upon the card reader, who makes it, and what their suppointing software does.  I happen to have an older ZoomIT SD card reader with a 30 pin dock connector.  The hardware maker provides an app for iOS that allows me to use the adapter with my iPhone 4 and I can open pictures from the SD card and view them.  I believe it even allows me to save teh image to my cameral roll if I want.  Since it does have the 30 pin dock connector, I need to use the Apple adapter to plug it into the Lightning port on my iPhone 5, but is still works just fine there too.
I also have the Apple Camera Connection Kit (30 pin version) but it is much more restrictive.  It only works with the iPad, and it only copies certain files form teh SD card to the iPad. (The files must be in the "/DCIM" folder on the SD card, the file name must be in the older DOS 8.3 file name format, and I believe it only woirks with JPG, and MOV files.  As you can see, the Apple device is built to let me view pictures from my point-n-shoot cmera on the iPad screen, whereas the ZoomIT allows copying of content to/from the SD card and an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch.
Now for the bad news, I don' tthink the ZoomIT reader is made any longer, and when you can find them, the sellers are usually charging close to $125 for them.

  • External Card reader

I just bought an external card reader which can run only in Mac OS 9.2. My computer is a new Mac OS X 10.5.1. How can i install the driver for the card reader? I have to tell you that i can't restart my computer in Mac OS 9. There is no such possibility

When you attach hardware devices to the Mac, go to the upper left corner of the desktop and select "about this Mac." Then select more info... and on the left hand side of the window highlight USB and look what's recognized. Most of the time if ASP ie Apple System Profiler recognizes a piece of hardware its going to work.

  • IPhoto won't download all photos on card

iPhoto was working great. Then I upgraded to Tiger (10.4.3), and my photos on my photo card will not all load. If I have 175 jpeg's on card, it loads to maybe 105 or 110 then quits (it's gone down to as low as 94 remaining). The whole program quits. When I open the program again, the same thing happens. I can download the photos on my husbands mac (not upgraded yet), so I know it's not the card or photos. This never happened before I upgraded. I cannot load all my photos, how do I fix this? I have about 3,000 photos in the library. Any help is appreciated.
    Powerbook G4 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Thanks Catherine.
Normally these issues are due to some sort of hardware malfunction.
The cards themselves could be a problem (less likely because you have used multiple cards).
The card reader could have an issue.
The USB cable connecting the card reader to the computer may also be faulty (you could try a different cable and see what happens).
Sometime the USB port and controller might be corrupted.
Something to try while going through all the options is to copy the images from the card onto your system and then try to import them from the hard drive into Lightroom and see if the problem persists.
This process is a somewhat trial-by-error thing.

  • Iphoto 11 is not recognizing jpeg files downloaded from camera and card reader. Nor will it allow me to transfer from image capture

iphoto 11 is not recognizing jpeg files from either the camera and card reader. Canon Eos rebel dig. Nor will it allow me to transfer images from image capture to iphoto. No problem downloading to image capture.

Sounds like a damaged card.  Get your photos off the card with Image Capture and then reformat the card in the camera.  Take some pictures and see if the card is recognized by iPhoto and the card reader.

  • Latest problem - can't import using card-reader

    In Bridge>File>Get Photos from Camera.....
App recognises there is card reader and card and amount of photos and then when asked to "get Photos", I get this message:-
"Adobe Bridge CS3 cannot obtain files from this device. Please ensure that the device is connected properly, or that the battery is charged, and try again."
What does this mean? - I am using a card reader, there are no batteries! There is never any problem when I import using Capture One Pro or iPhoto or LightRoom or Aperture with this method, so why now?
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers
    Frances

First check if you have the latest version for Bridge CS3 (it should be 2.1.1.9)
Then restart Bridge holding down option key to refresh the preferences. Then set the preferences again to your wishes and try again.
You should prefer a card reader for downloading images instead of directly from the camera. there are several threads with the reason why this is a better method.
Photodownloader can do this job, don't forget to explore the advanced settings :-)

  • How to download from an SD card reader to iPhone 5

I downloaded iPhoto to my iPhone, then I attached the SD card reader to my iPhone, inserted the camera SD card with pix, yet the phone won't recognize the SD card reader. How do I download images from the SD card to my iPhone 5?
    Thanx.

You can't do that. Transfer them from the SD card to your computer, then sync them to the phone.
The camera connection kit that Apple sells is NOT compatible with the iPhone. It is designed for the iPad.

  • M92p SFF: Possible to add a 2.5" SSD boot drive in the 3.5" external card reader bay?

I recently bought a M92p Small Form Factor with model number 2988-A5U.
Is it possible to to add an additional 2.5" SSD as a boot drive while retaining the 3.5" 1TB SATA as the data drive?
I have searched many posts and datasheets on the internet but could't find an answer.
    http://www.partnerinfo.lenovo.com/partners/us/products/downloads/thinkcentre-mseries/ThinkCentre-M92...
The above specs. states that it supports 2 HDDs but I can't find another 3.5" or 2.5" internal HDD bay.
My thought is to put a 2.5" SSD into the 3.5" card reader bay. Is it feasible?

I ordered a 2.5" General 2.5" SSD to 3.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive HDD caddy from Amazon that fit perfectly! General 2.5" SSD to 3.5" SATA HDD caddy It came with screws that fit the new SSD, and the caddy fit the blue plastic carrier that slides into the 3.5" bay. This caddy properly aligns the connectors off to the left side, supports up to 6GBs SATA, and is even hot swappable.

  • IPhoto 9.5 won't recognize USB card reader.

I loaded Mavericks this week with iPhoto 9.5. But now iPhoto will not read a card reader and gives me a message that the card reader was ejected improperly. When I force quit iPhoto and reopen, it won't open the card reader so I can import pictures. I have tried several times to get it to read the card reader. Any ideas?
Nevermind, I found someone else's reply about Image Capture. That worked!

iPhoto 9.5 immediately tries to "upgrade" my library using the upgrader.
iPhoto 9.5 asks you to run the upgrader to prepare the library for 9.5. It then will update the library to its format.
You need to do the following:
1 - go to your Applications/Utilities folder and double click on the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application.
2 - select Choose Library, navigate to your iPhoto library, select it and let the upgrader do its thing.
3 - launch iPhoto 9.5 to open and finish the conversion of the library.

  • USB Hub / External Card Reader recommendations?

    Afternoon,
I have recently purchased a late 2012 27" iMac and would like to add some peripherals.
I am looking for a USB 3.0 hub and a multi card reader.
I have seen lots of posts about USB hubs (the joys of a google search) that either arent recognised as 3.0 or are on American sites. (Am based in the UK).
I know there is a card reader on the back of the iMac, but only for SD and I would prefer to not have to keep turning the monitor round to reach it.  (I still have xD cards that I use).
Without being too picky, I dont want 'ugly' units. Dont want to make a beautiful machine look ugly when surrounded by lots of horrible looking external add-ons.
Does anyone have any recomendations of hubs / readers, or even ones to steer clear of?
    Thanks very much.
    Karen

    Thanks for trying but ...
No, I can't see the drive when booted up with Cmd R.
I don't have a USB hub to test on.
I'm just tried resetting the PRAM as you suggested.
    No change.
Any other ideas gratefully accepted, otherwise, I can book into the genius bar thingy - no idea if that will be of use.  I work in IT so I'm fairly handy though there are many mac specific commands & tricks I'm not aware of.

  • Archlinux installed on SD card not booting w/o external card reader

Hello, this is my first time here, so hopefully I don't sound too much like an idiot.
I've been trying to install Archlinux to an 8GB SDHC cards (Tried on two different ones, Kingston and Polaroid).  I'm doing this via an Archlinux live CD on my Desktop (HP m9040n with Windows 7) through it's built-in SD Card reader.  The install goes nicely, and I can boot from the SD card alright on my desktop.  However, when I put the card into my ASUS eeePC 900's SD card slot, it won't boot, showing:
Buffer I/O error, dev sda, sector 16015344
Root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/[UUID]' doesn't exist. Attempting to create it.
ERROR: Unable to determine major/minor nubmer of root device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/[UUID]'
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
    sda is the SD card.
Now for the fun part, when I put the SD card into a USB all-in-one card reader, and hook that up to the eeePC, it boots fine.  I followed the USB guide on the wiki site, and it boots alright on anything but the eeePC built-in card reader.  Please help   Let me know what other information you need.  Thanks in advanced.
       -Adam

ok... so im in the exact same boat.. trying to get Archlinux on an SD card with xbmc.  had some trouble in the installer but figured it out after looking at this board and the various wikis.  however i am having the exact same issue.  i now have usb hook enabled and detecting and mounting the SD card.  however it just hangs shortly after this and after about 5 minutes will just start to work and boot normally.
this is unacceptable for a media system, and not sure what the cause is... casual.formality, did you find a solution?
    thanks.
just wanted to add that im using the latest netboot installer and using UUID, system is an acer aspire revo.

  • Problems downloading photos from sd card

new macbook air. i insert sd card (from samsung phone, 66 photos) but all i get on the iPhoto page is an indication on the left hand side that my sd card is there and the word 'loading' on the right hand side. no opportunity to click on 'import' because that stays on 0. no photos appear.
    many thanks

i went through most of the folders and the one named DCIM came up 'camera' after i clicked on it. and yes i dragged it to iPhoto, viewed all 66 photos and they are all now divided between albums.
    thanks for your help.
still leaves the mystery of why the casio sd card worked directly into iPhoto but the samsung sd card needed to go through finder; but thats for another day.
    thanks again
