Iphoto 11- Successfully imported photos No longer showing up in Library

I've just returned home from vacation.  I imported my photos on the plane.  All the photos imported fine.  I was manipulating them on the plane etc.  Suddenly Iphoto shows none of them, The Events icons still have the correct date, but are now Generic palm tree logos that list 0 photos.  I'm sickened to say I chose to delete the photos from the camera flash drive after import.  I haven't been home long enough to back up the computer before this snafu.  But was just looking at the photos litterally a half hour ago.  Could they possibly still be on my computer?   Please help!!!!

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

I have recently updated to iPhoto 9.2.1, more by accident I guess. In the older version of iPhoto when I imported photos and gave the event his own name (for exampample "110723 birthday son 2011"), this name was also used in the "masterfile", so I could find the file by his name ("110723 birthday son 2011") in the "masterfile" on my HD and copy and paste it from there to other computers.
In the new version the file gets stored under a seemingly random number, which does not give me any information about the content.
Is there a way to fix this? Would it be different in apperture?
    Thanks
    Harald

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

  • Iphoto has been importing photos for over an hour and i can't get it to stop. can't stop importing and can't shut down computer.

iphoto has been importing photos for over n hour and I can't get it to stop.  Can't get out of iphoto and can't shut down computer.

iPhoto works best when the source (Pictures folder) is on a different disk drive than the iPhoto Library is on.
And you need to have enough free disk space to work with, the faster the better.
Also, do not keep your media folders and those in your home folder on the same drive as the system, also another bottleneck.
Until or unless you have everything on 1400MB/sec SSD PCIe controller, you want
    System boot drive
Media and data folders and such
    scratch
    backup
    etc
I put iPhoto on an SSD off an SSD PCIe Sonnet Tempo card
If you stop- it, you will need to trash the Library it was creating.
Reading and writing to/from the same hard drive will be slow.
You don't mention which Mac, or how large you are trying to import etc
Also the support page and link to the iPhoto Commuinity is off this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto
Take a look in Activity Monitor. See what the % being used for iPhoto, how many pageouts, how much free space on the various disk drives, and how much RAM do you have installed?

  • IPhoto won't import photos from iPhone

Hi - using a MBP 2.2, Leopard, iLife 08 and an 8gb iPhone. iPhoto used to import photos from the iPhone no problem - now it won't import it at all. Says it's an unreadable file (though a normal jpg).
What gives? Same issue trying to import two jpg's rec'd via email (and dragged to my desktop).
    Any suggestions?

I have this problem now. I have MacOS 10.5.1, iPhoto '08, and iPhone running 1.1.2.
In my "camera roll" on the iPhone are 260 photos, all the pics I have taken since I got the phone. I imported some of them weeks ago with no problems into iPhoto. But now iPhoto can't import anything from the iPhone.
iPhoto does know there are photos on the phone, because there is set of blank thumbnail squares that I can select to import. When I look at the photo info, I can see the file name, size, date, but all the other info is missing or incorrect. It doesn't have camera maker or model. Most worrying though is the height and width of the pictures are zero.
I am thinking that there is some cache file on the phone that got corrupted somehow. Resetting to factory settings might help, but I really don't want to lose all the photos that I took from the holidays.
I've tried the above suggestions and no avail: logged out and into the .Mac account; powered down the phone; reset the iSync history (interestingly, iSync does not recognize my phone when I do a device scan).
I did try removing some stuff to make room, but still no dice.

  • IPhoto suddenly wont import photos from my iPhone

iPhoto suddenly wont import photos from my iPhone.
Keeps sending me error messages... wrong format.
    anyone know about this?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. More information means you get better assistance. (And no, more exclamation marks do not get help faster or make your issue seem urgent. They just make it seem like you have a stuck key )

  • Why isn't my last import saving? I can import the pictures from the memory card, but if I close out iPhoto the just "imported photos" are nowhere to be found.  Please help

Why isn't my last import saving? I can import the pictures from the memory card, but if I close out iPhoto the just "imported photos" are nowhere to be found.  Please help

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IPhoto randomly rotates imported photos

When I use iPhoto '08 to import photos from a Powershot A75, it rotates them apparently with neither rhyme nor reason. Some will have the original orientation, some will be rotated. This is not a setting on my camera. Two pictures taken seconds apart of the same subject with the same orientation may have one rotated the other not when imported into iPhoto. In one case, it has rotated the image 180 degrees.

    TD,
Thanks for the systematic idea. I tried your suggestion.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what is going on, but Image Capture and iPhoto seem to be importing the images differently regarding orientation.
Let me define my terms - what I am calling "correct" orientation is when the image on my mac screen is oriented the same way it is oriented in relation to the camera lens. That may or may not mean that items in the photo are "right side up" This is how my previous version of iPhoto imported them with this camera. I'd like them to import just as the camera "sees" them, and not be rotated at all.
So trying your suggestion, using Image Capture, 3 of 8 quick snaps appear rotated. Using iPhoto to import the same 8 pictures, only one has been rotated. It is also one that Image Capture rotated.
I tried to "revert to original" on all of them in iPhoto, which had no effect. Does this suggest a camera setting problem? I have not changed the settings on my camera. Could it be my previous version of iPhoto was ignoring the camera setting and this new version is not?
    I appreciate any suggestions.

  • Successfully Imported photos to iPhoto are gone!

    Dear Apple,
Today I imported photos to iPhoto. It said "import successful". Followed by: "Do you want to delete your photos?" I choose "Yes." like I usually do. I never before had an issue with this, that is until today! Shortly after choosing "Yes" the spinning rainbow wheel of death started. I was unable to do anything with iPhoto. The mouse was not functional with the iPhoto program. After waiting more than 15+ mins I decieded to give up & in the end I had to "Force Quit" iPhoto. After reopening iPhoto, none of the photos I loaded are visible. I keep everything orginized by date. Despite that iPhoto claimed it uploaded the photos successfully & none of them can be found anywhere on my computer comes the worst of it... iPhoto did in fact delete all of the photos on my SD card! So I have no way of trying to reupload them & they are not in my iPhoto. Not sure what happened but if there is someway to find them that would be great. I used the "search" feature... nothing. I manually looked in my iPhoto files... nothing. Yet it said they were successfully uploaded. What do I do? Is there a way to find or retrieve my photos? It was over 200 some photos I took today. After this icident I think next time I will choose "Save" photos on SD, wait & make sure the photos have been transfered, then go back & delete them. Never again. With this in mind I do have one other question. Why on earth does iPhoto downsize my original photo files? I always have kept my photos with a certain resolution. iPhoto everytime downsizes them! Is there a way to keep this from happening? I do save my files in RAW format, however I do not have iPhoto, nor a program to open them with at this time. Is there a way to keep my jpegs the same resolution. Why would this be happening? Thanks.

    1. You're not talking to Apple here. This forum is users talking to other users.
    2. You can recover the photos from your SD card with apps like MediaRecover or Picture Rescue
    3. Never let your computer erase data without you first checking that the data is safe. Specifically never use iPhoto (or any other app) to delete the photos from your Camera Card. Disconnect the camera, check the transfer has gone correctly and then use your Camera to Reformat the Card. This has three advantages:
    a. You know your data is safe - because you've taken the time to check it.
    b. Reformatting the card is much, much faster - takes a couple of seconds
    c. Reformatting also refreshes the Directory Structure on the Card, helping prevent issues with the card and prolonging its life.
    4. iPhoto doesn't downsize or change your original files in any way. I'm guessing that you're confusing the Master and thge Preview if you're shooting RAW. But to be sure: What exactly are you shooting?
    5. 'Resolution' is a very vague term. Some folks use it to refer to pixel density, some to refer to file size and others to refer to image quality. What do you mean by it?

  • Photos no longer show up in iphoto

    Macbook Pro using iphoto 6.0.5
After importing photos from my camera, I was prompted to "update my thumbnails", which I did. There were then blank squares in my thumbnail view, so I thought I would close and reopen iphoto to have it all reload to restore them in the view. When iphoto restarted, none of my photos loaded, and it says "no photos" at the bottom of the window. All my albums are intact below the library listing in the left pane, but clicking on them results in no pictures appearing (they are empty).
It appears that my original and modified pictures folders are intact, though some rolls seem to be missing, and in some rolls that ARE there, some pictures have rthe dialog "appear to be corrupt" and will not open, whilst others open but are half a picture, are garbled, etc etc.
I attempted to rebuild the thumbnails (large and small) and library, but as there are no pictures to work with, it "rebuilt" in under a second.
If I use searchlight to locate a specific picture, I find it in its folder in my user picture folder, but when I double click on it, iphoto opens, but the picture does not appear in iphoto.
Possibly related, my entire music library went missing as well, at the same time. I had to reimport all the albums from their folders in my user music folder. Of note is the fact that none of my playlists were present, and in this case, my iphoto albums list IS.
I am very frustrated as I stupidly have not backed up my computer since I have added some recent photography. Can anyone advise how to get my library back up and running, and possibly restoring the files that may have gone missing or corrupt?
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Dave

I had a similar problem with my girlfriend's newly purchased MacBook after I retrieved her iPhoto Library from an external backup hard drive (the backup was from her old iBook). I got grayed out boxes with either question marks or exclamation marks. I tried rebuilding the library by holding down the alt+apple keys at start up, which did not solve the problem. I then went online and tried some of the suggestions in this forum, including fixing iPhoto library permissions with "BatCHmod" and rebuilding the iPhoto library with "iPhoto Library Manager". The latter managed to only retrieve +/- 600 out of a total of over 6,000 pics! I then retrieved the iPhoto Library from the backup a second time and replaced the first copy I had attempted to fix with various programs. I then opened iPhoto and... same grey boxes as the first time around!
I then quit iPhoto and deleted the "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" file in "username"/Library/preferances and restarted iPhoto. This recovered all 6000+ photos, by somehow forcing iPhoto to act as if I and opened it the first time i.e it asked whether I wanted to use it to handle transfers from digital cameras etc.

  • IPhoto won't import photos

I can no longer import photos from my camera. When I connect my camera (CannonEOS SLR) to my computer (MacPro), iPhoto opens and I see the camera in the  left hand menu options, and I get the camera download screen, but the images will not download. I see a message in top left of the camera download screen that says "Downloading," but the photos don't show and they are not downloading. Download almost seems stuck.
I have iPhoto 9.6 and OS 10.10 (Yosemite). I downloaded some photos from this camera the other day without problem. The only difference with my computer since  that download is that I updated it to Yosemite. I've run DiskUtility.
Any suggestions or hep would be appreciated. Thanks.

Are you shooting RAW? Then reinstalling the RAW support may help.
The RAW support files are installed in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/Coreservices" Folder:
To open this folder, use the Finder's "Go" menu. Click the smiling Finder icon in the Dock to bring the Finder forward.
Then type the keyboard shortcut ⇧⌘G  (for "Finder > Go > Go to folder")  and copy and paste "/System/Library/Coreservices" into the text field.
In the Finder window that will open, delete both the files "RawCamera.bundle" and "RawCameraSupport.bundle". You will have to enter your Administrator password.
Download the current RAW support update from Apple's Support Site:
Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 5.07  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1757
In the Downloads folder you will find the disk image with the installer. Double click it to open and run and the installer.
    Then restart your Mac.

  • Iphoto don't import photos from sd card

After the upgrade to Yosemite, the upgraded iPhoto is no longer able to read and import pothos from my sd card.
Photos are shoot in Canon RAW format.
Preview is OK, but after import nearly all pothos are imported "black".
Moreover, often the entire system crashes during the operation, and I need to restart the Computer.
No problem in vieweing the library with old imported photos.

  • IPhoto hangs when importing photos

When I try to import photos (e.g. from Yahoo Photos), iPhoto tells me that it's importing 1 photo, then hangs and does not complete the import. When I force quit out of iPhoto, the imported photo then shows up. I've tried the BatChmod program and verified the disk with Disk Utility, and the problem still keeps occurring. Anyone else have this problem or have a solution? Thank you very much.

    Colleen:
What versions of iPhoto and Quicktime are you running? They should be 6.0.6 and 7.1.6 respectively. Try a couple of fixes:
1 - run the BatChmod on the file before importing it.
2 - download the "Embed sRGB Profile-Applescript" application, unzip and place on your Desktop. Then drop the files onto it before importing into iPhoto. See if that will let the photos get imported.
If neither of those help create a new temporary test library (launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, opt to create a new library) and give it a unique name so you can easily identify it from your original library.
If that library can import correctly then the original library is the culprit. The next thing to try is to launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select the first three options.
If still no luck, log into another account on your iMac and try importing those photos into a library there. It it works there then it's your account thats the problem. You can do the following to see if one of your other preference files is causing the problem:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences
Go to HD/Users/Your_name/Library. Move the Preferences folder (in its entirety) to the Desktop and make a second copy of it so you have Copy A and B. Now try the the process again and determine if problem is fixed.
If the problem IS fixed, then go to the new Prefs folder that the OS will have created and open it up.
Open Copy B on the Desktop and select all of the items inside. Drag them into the open new library folder. When the Copy window comes up check the Apply to All check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here. That will keep the new files created and bring back all of the others.
If the problem is NOT fixed, trash the new Prefs folder and move the intact Copy A folder back to the Library folder .
Sorry if this is such a long winded response. Just trying to cover all options in one response. Good luck.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • IPhoto will not import photos and quits unexpectedly

Please correct me if this is the wrong forum for this problem as I am new to all of this.
I have a mac mini running OS X 10.6.8 and iPhoto 11 version 9.2.3. I'm trying to import photos. I tried doing it through the camera's USB which is how we've always done it, and it quit unexpectedly. I tried putting photos from camera onto a flash drive on another computer and importing them to this computer that way, same problem: quits unexpectedly. I have looked for some 3imx file I read about (didn't find it). I deleted some other file in iphoto in the library/application support which I can't remember the name of because I've tried so many things. I have rebuilt my library. I have tried making a new library and importing into it (same problem). I'm getting desperate as I am supposed to be doing a project.

Ok, I quit the rebuilding because it kept stalling at the very end and wouldn't complete anyway. I tried to update the version but it says it's the latest (that can't be true). So I tried a different library and got this:
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Do you want to quit and use the latest version of iPhoto, or do you want to create a new photo library?

  • After changing contact photo on iPhone, photo no longer shows up in outlook

I had my contact photos all setup on my iphone, and syncing correctly with iTunes and showing up correctly in Outlook 2007. The photos are stored on the iPhone, and set either by selecting the photo and doing "Assign to Contact", or in Contacts, Edit, Edit (the picture) and "Choose Photo". They would show up as a thumbnail in the Outlook 2007 Business Card view, and also in the detail when you double-click a contact. This part of the process hasn't changed.
What has changed is iOS4. Now, when I go in and change a contact's photo on the iPhone, it no longer shows up correctly in Outlook 2007. It shows a blank space when showing the Business card view, but shows the photo correctly in the detail if I double-click a contact. Even if I change it back to the photo that it was, it still won't show correctly in Outlook 2007 Business Card view.
Contacts whose photos I haven't changed since iOS4 show correctly in both places in Outlook 2007.
Anyone else seeing this or have a fix?

    Hi!
I'm having the same troubles and after searching for a while i found
    the following solution:
    In short (from http://gyoo.com/blog/?p=48)
    First, some figures:
    iPhone camera resolution: 1600×1200 (72dpi)
    iPhone screen resolution: 320×480 (160dpi)
iPhone contact picture display size: 64×64 (160dpi)
iPhone contact picture display size on call: 320×270 (160dpi)
    Outlook import resolution: 72×96 (72dpi)
    - On your PC, resize the image contact to 320×320 (160dpi),
knowing that 25 pixels on the top and bottom will be semi-transparent when on call.
    - On your PC, create a folder iPhone Photos\Contacts and move your contact photos inside Sync the photos into your iPhone with iTunes through the Photos tab.
    - Select the iPhone Photos folder as source.
    - Manually associated the photo to your contact on the iPhone
    (Edit ->Add Photo->Choose Existing Photo)
    - Sync back the iPhone with iTunes.
The photos will be associated automatically into Outlook with the good resolution this time.
    Regards
    Harry

  • Imported Photos Don't Show

Let me start from the beginning. I was playing around with my iPhoto library to try to get rid of duplicate photos that were just rotated. I went back and realized I deleted some photos. Yeah, dumb. I know.
I have a backup of my library. I took the whole iPhoto Library directory on my computer and moved it to my desktop. I copied the backup of my old library into the Pictures directory on my computer. So now I have my old library showing up in iPhoto and things look fine.
Well, there are some photos I've taken since this backup copy of iPhoto was done, so I want to put those photos into the library. I am looking at the Originals folder for these images. It doesn't matter whether I drag them or go to FILE -> IMPORT. It shows the images being imported one at time, but when it's done, I end up with blank thumbnails and blank images in iPhoto. Please see the images below.
    http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p31/theotheragentm/nopicturesiphoto.jpg
    http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p31/theotheragentm/nopictures.jpg
I have no idea why this is happening. I've rebuilt the library and thumbnails, but that doesn't work. When I open iPhoto again it tells me the images weren't imported and to import them. When I say YES, it looks like they're being imported, but I get the same result.
Can anyone explain this to me? It should not be a version problem with iPhoto as it has been recent that this happened and I don't believe there were any updates since. Thanks in advance for any help.

    TOAM:
Do you have rolls activated in the View menu? Can you see the photos in the Last Rolls section of the Source pane?
Those blank windows are indication that iPhoto has lost it's link to the files. In your case both the thumbnails and originals. If the originals can't be located then the rebuild cannot create a new thumbnail. So it looks like you'll have to start with a fresh library and import the original file from your current library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the Originals folder from the desktop and the iPhoto Llibrary folder. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
There's one way to get rid of the auto-rotated modified files. Copy the Modified version of it to the Desktop. Then open the Originals folder and locate the same files in that folder's subfolders and replace with the rotated modified version. Now go back to iPhoto and do a revert to original for those files. iPHoto will delete the modified version leaving you with the "modified original" version.
