IPhoto 11 - thumbnails and photos

I recently purchased the MacBook Retina Pro, and have successfully imported my iPhotos from my old MacBook (circa 2008) to the iPhoto 11, v. 9.5.
However, a few photos in some of my most recent events show up only as thumbnails. When I look at the photo info, they show up as sized less than 1MB, although all my other photos are 2+ MB. I have rebuilt the Library in the iPhoto Library Manager, and while the photos show up as normal size in the Manager, they still do not show up as full-size photos in iPhoto.
I am now in Day 6 of trying to figure this out, and feeling more than a little frustrated, primarily because everything else has come through okay, except for a handful of thumbnails, which stubbornly refuse to become real photos.
I have even tried copying them manually into iPhoto, from a USB stick, but that didn't work either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • IPhoto Thumbnails and Photos Not Displaying After Restore

    Hi,
I recently reset my iMac to overcome an indexing problem.  I backed up my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and once the Mac was rebuilt I copied the iPhoto file back across from the backup to the iMac.
When I ran iPhoto and selected the iPhoto library to use, I get the Events thumbnails grid but there is no content other than the name of the event.
If I click on an Event I then get:
Clicking on a photo gives me:
I tried copying and importing the iPhoto file again, but the same thing happens.
I can see by inspecting the Media folder under the Import to Library option that all the photos are there.
I've tried rebuilding and repairing the iPhoto database by holding down Option/CMD when opening iPhoto and selecting options 3, 4, 1 and 2 in that order but still hasn't helped.
Anyone know why they're not displaying?
Thankfully, when I backed up the iPhoto library I also "exported" all the photos as individuals to my Cloud storage, so I also have another backup - but I'd rather not use this second backup if possible as I want to keep my Events as per the main backup.
I also have a 3rd backup (yes, I'm paranoid about my photos!) on Time Machine (didn't use that for the restore as I was told it would re-introduce the indexing errors).
    Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing this is as it should be?
That looks good, your original image files are still in the iPhoto Library but need reconnecting.

Then try the last resort and rebuild with iPhoto Library Manager.  You can download it here, the free trial will suffice for this:  Fat Cat Software – iPhoto Library Manager

When I upgraded my iPhoto thumbnails, my photos disappeared.  How do I recover them?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 10 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Hard drive packed up, but had Time Machine backup. I installed new ssd and upgraded to Mountain Lion, but I can't find iPhoto library and photos or iTunes songs? Is there an answer to this?  A backup run did not install either photos or songs. Graham

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

  • Can I move my very large iPhoto app and photos from main HD to a larger secondary HD via drag and drop?

Can I move my very large iPhoto app and photos from main HD to a larger secondary HD via drag and drop?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • IPhoto 6.0.5 thumbnails and photos "lost" -- please help

I have a large iPhoto library (17,000+ photos), located on an external bus-powered Firewire drive. I'm using iPhoto 6.0.5. The portable drive accidently disconnected. After reconnecting it, iPhoto still finds my library, still has all of my keywords, albums, and has the correct image counts in each. But ALL of my thumbnails are grey'd out, and clicking a thumbnail brings up a grey'd out photo with a question mark.
I've tried all of the rebuilding options available using CMD-OPTION. They all run quickly, and have no affect.
I've tried disk utility on the external drive -- no problems found. I've tried disk warrior on the drive, and it does rebuild a new directory, but gives me an error message preventing me from replacing the directory ("The new directory cannot replace the original directory due to a Mac OS services failure.")
The file structure looks fine on this iPhoto library, and I have done NO editing of it directly from the finder.
So I am sure all of the data is there. Can anyone tell me how to make iPhoto find these photos and thumbnails?
Yes, I do have a backup, but I had done some significant work in the library -- not to mention adding more photos -- since the backup, and would rather not lose the recent work.
    Thanks much in advance!

Thanks for this reply. I did try what you suggested, and it was on its way to working, but eventually collapsed over the weight of my library size -- it hung up and was running very slowly at the end. For others who might try this -- I'm sure it would have worked, but it is a slow process.
I'm taking the liberty of copying a reply I received on another forum. This correctly identifies the root cause, and ended up being what I did, and it worked well and quickly, albeit I then had to manually import the photos since my last back-up. You might also be interested in his tool:

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do. The key component to the iPhoto database is the file titled "Library6.iPhoto". It was being written to when the crash occurred. There has been no way found to resurrect a library once that file has been damaged.
The best you can do is create a new library and import the Originals folder from the old one. This will give you the same rolls as the old library but some of the dates may be different.
To protect from this in the future you can make a backup of the database file. Then replace the bad file with the backup if you encounter the problem again. However, I recommend you backup that file after any import or extensive work within the library. Otherwise any work or imports after the last backup will not be recognized.
I've created an Automator application that will copy that file to your Pictures folder and give it an orange label. If you put the app in the dock you can easily backup numerous times a day. You can download the application, iPhoto dB File Backup, from Toad's Cellar

  • Damaged links between thumbnails and photos

I replaced my HD and used Time Machine to restore.  Everything appears fine.  iphoto '08 shows al the thumbnails and movies as being there but come up black when you click on an individual photo and give error 50 when trying to play a movie.  i believe the damage is the link between the thumbnails and the photos.  I need help!  thanks.

What exactly do you see when you try to view the Photos? Just a Black Screen? Or one with an Exclamation Mark?

  • Iphoto 08 and photo collage

I have been reading on the net and did a google search and I understand that in the previous version of Iphoto (that predates Iphoto 08) you were able to make a photo collage under print&layouts?? Can you no longer do this in Iphoto 08? if not why? Is there a template add-on or something to do this? I think it would be pretty Stupid for apple to not include this feature in 08 any help would be great

Other applications that can create mosiacs or collages are:
MacOSaiX, MozoDojo, PhotoTiles, Posterino and OmniGraffle. I created this 20" x 30" 96 photo collage with OG.
Earlier there was an thumbnail poster plugin of sorts for iPhoto in Tiger by Jim Heid but I don't think that's available any more. However there's an Automator version of that, a 20 x 30" poster that's available from here at AutomatorWorld. It's a free Automator workflow.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Iphoto albums and photos are mission

I currently have iphoto 6.0.6. When I open iphoto it is empty. All my albums and folders along with photos are not there. I know the photos are still on my hard drive but I don't know how to get everything back in iphoto.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    Some possibilities:
    1. Has iPhoto 'forgotten' where your library is? Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. Select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the iPhoto Library Folder. See if that will open it.
    2. IS the db corrupted? Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library Folder allowing it to overwrite the damaged file. If not, then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same film rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual rolls to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library Folder on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • Just upgraded to iphoto 9 and photos are gone

Hello i just upgraded to iphoto 11 and most of my photos from my airport disk are gone. Only the ones i imported  this year are recovered. HELP!
I have photos of my clients that are very very important.
    f

    With respect
Not having an up-to-date back up is like driving without a seatbelt. You may well be fine but if something goes wrong you'll be worse off than if you were wearing one.
Upgrading anything without a back up is the same, except now you're driving blindfolded and drunk, so something is much more likely to go wrong. And if it does you'll be much much worse off than if you had one.
Next: Is that a network connection to that Disk? If so, then it's not a appropriate location for an iPhoto Library.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
    See this article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168
for more. Note also the comment:
“Additionally, storing the iPhoto library on a network rather than locally on your computer can also lead to poor performance or data loss.”
So, before we can start to figure out a solution you'll need to confirm that the library is on a correctly formatted disk and with a wired connection to the Mac.
Then tell us the size of the Library in the Finder.

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 displays only raw photos correctly.  If I correct redeye or touch up a photo I get white boxes over the eyes(if correcting redeye) or the thumbnail and photo turns mostly white. Note: I have an NVIDIA card.

Do you remember the days when Apple wrote robust code ?  The latest updates have not been great.
Maybe the programers are outsourced to a foriegn country now or Noobs out of school ?
It looks like someone isn't paying attention to the editing layer... I write code.  and when you edit an image you store the update in another layer. The method enables you to easily undo edits.   I "upgraded" to 10.9.1 and was forced to update iPhoto.    After I uploaded photos from my camera I noticed redeye reduction results in just white squares over the eyes. I also noticed issues if I attempt any photo edit funcition in iPhoto.
This means to me that iPhoto 's editor is saving video from the wrong memory location.
I have a NVIDIA card because I write CUDA applications on my Mac.  An NVIDIA card enables me to write CUDA and OpenCL apps.
Here's what happens if I attempt to straighten an image:

    After Edit:
Here's  what happens if I attempt to use the Redeye reduction tool:
As you can see Mavericks may have made some improvements but overall it does not get the job done as it used to.
I am willing to bet  that your graphics code has devolved into ATI centric code.
I booted into macos 7.5.1 and the issue with the same hardware older operating system and apps works fine.    I just wish I never deleted my 10.6.8 install.  10.6.8 was the most stable on the MacPro.   Everything worked.     From 10.7 up I've noticed a decline in dependability.
Can you please fix this or design a work around ?    Switching over to an ATI graphics card is NOT a good answer.
Also I noticed Cinebench R15 benchmarks are higher in 7.5.1 verses 10.9.1

Where in that other topic is the manufacturer of the graphic card or even a graphic card mentioned.?  You may have known what kind of card you had but we're not mind readers.
Since it appears to be a incompatibility between that particular card, Mavericks and iPhoto you should keep telling Apple about it by contacting them via

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html

  • The thumbnails and photo info shows up, but I can't view the pics.

I just imported pictures from my Nikon Coolpix S550 for the first time. The thumbnails all show up, and I can view the photo information, but when I can't open any of the pics, nor can I drag them onto the desktop. The weirdest part is the first three pictures from the import are fine. I can open them, edit them and drag them like normal. How can I fix this?

Run the three fixes below in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open Photo window
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.

  • IPhoto 11 and Photo Stream not syncing

    Hi all,
I'm running a MacBook Pro 2011 updated to Lion OSX 10.7.2. iPhoto has been updated to 9.2 and my iPhone has iOS 5.
iCloud is syncing my calendar, mail and iWork items with no problems. The phone and macbook are both connected to wi-fi on the same connection.
The only thing that's not working is Photo Stream.
It's turned on in the Mac settings pane and enabled on the phone. The strange thing is that if I take a screenshot on the phone or if I download a photo from the web (like wallpaper from an app), the photo will show in my photostream.
If I take a photo with the camera on the phone, it isn't being sent to the cloud.
Find My Mac, Mail, Calendar, iWork etc are all working fine. It's just this problem with the photos.
Some advice would be very much appreciated.

If you have your iPhoto/iCloud preferences set as show in this screenshot
each photo that goes into the My Photo Stream will also be imported in an Event in your library.  This copy is independent of the version in the My Photo Stream.  So if you delete the photo from the My Photo Stream it will still exist in the Event for the month it was taken.

  • IPhoto events and photos

For some reason all of my photos went into one date range from 2005 until present. These all had one title with the above date range. All my events were gone. I called Apple and they said only way to recover was with backup data. Since my lasts back up I have many pictures of my new granddaughter. Not a good option. So they said I would have to manually re-create the events file. My picture file is over 9,000 photos. I did rebuild the photo file with Apples help but nothing changed. I have what I have manually done and the new events I did manually. Anyone else ever have this happen?? HELP

That is one way - the other way is to have iPhoto automatically split the one large event into smaller events according to your preference settings as TD suggested - the options are loading a backup from prior to the problem occurring, manually splitting back to smaller events or having iPhoto do the split according to your preference settings

  • IPhoto viewer and photo orientation

I have the iPad Camera Connection Kit and a Canon 5D Mark II with which I shoot in RAW mode. When I shoot in portrait orientation and connect the camera to the iPad and do an import, none of the files are rotated (they are all in landscape orientation) and I have to rotate them all in iPhoto, which is quite cumbersome when you have 300+ photos and they are all in portrait orientation.
I would consider this a bug because there is no computer involved in this setup -- it's straight from the camera. The EXIF data is definitely there and correct. Is this a MK II incompatibility? Is there a different app that I could use that doesn't have this issue?
It's otherwise very exciting, so I would really like to get this issue fixed. Thanks!

So it looks like the problem was that auto rotate was turned off in the camera, and when it's off no orientation data is saved in the RAW file.
