IPhoto 11 unusably slow

Yes, I've seen the other posts.
iBook 2.1GHz, 4GB RAM, 500 GB drive, over 200 GB free. 10.7.4 fully patched. iPhoto 9.2.3
iPhoto starts with in as muc as 15 se, but is immediately unusably slow. Any click on any item in the UI causes a spinning beachball and the action takes 20 to 30 seconds to complete. Scrolling is essentially impossible. Menu actions are somewhat faster, taking 5 to 10 seconds to respond. Activity Monitor shows it using only a few percent CPU throughout, although there a brief spikes into the 30's which quickly fade. Over 2.2 GB of 4GB of RAM is free throughout, no major disk or network activity.
I have:
rebuilt the library, thumbnails, and permissions
turned off spotlight for the entire Picture directory
never had Bootcamp installed
Open to any suggestions.

Hi There
I have also had the same problem with iPhoto 11 after the latest update. I have ordered new RAM and have tried all the above steps. Nothing has worked so far.
I note that photostream is using almost all of my CPU which would explain wht everything takes forever to respond if it ever does. The strange thing is that I have photostream turned off on my iPhone and Ipad, and also don't have any of the boxes ticked in the photostream tab in preferences. I am not sure what photostream is trying to do when it is not even turned on. Any suggestions would be welcome and I will keep everyone posted if I find the fix as this appears to be causing the issue.

  • IPhoto 6 unusably slow (starting with keywords and then the rest o product)

As I've mentioned in a post in another thread, I upgraded to iPhoto 6 a few weeks ago. From the moment of upgrade, anything associated with the keyword function (applying, searching, even scrolling the keyword box) is painfully slow--60 seconds to 3+ minutes at a time (that's the average--I've had waits of 90 seconds to apply 1 keyword to 1 photo and 8 minutes to apply 1 keyword to 27 photos). Since that last post, I've also discovered that the longer I try to use the product, the slower EVERYTHING in the product gets (other than scrolling the library).
I use iPhoto as a database, not an image editor. To give you an idea of what I'm talking about, the types of things I'm trying to do include:
    * apply one keyword to 30 photos
    * click on one photo after having assigned a keyword to a different subset of photos
    * scroll down one page in the keyword box
    * select 4 photos
    * scroll one page in the main iPhoto view of photos
    * search by keyword
I've re-installed, re-built, and re-started. I can also say that the longer I try to use iPhoto 6 in one session, the worse the performance gets. Yesterday morning I had to keyword 150 photos from a party and forced myself to use iPhoto so they could be searched with another set of pictures already in iPhoto. It took me OVER 1 HOUR to assign an average of 6 keywords to each photo with selections averaging 10-15 photos at a time. I am not exaggerating--I timed it (63 minutes). For the record, no other applications were running: iPhoto was flying solo (I thought running alone might help performance, but it didn't. I'm no software programmer but I have a lot of experience with computers and whatever is tying iPhoto's resources into a knot seems to be between iPhoto and iPhoto or iPhoto and the OS.)
Also, the longer I used the product, the fewer "actions" it saw. So, for example, at the beginning I could click 3 keywords on the same keyword pane view and all 3 would apply to the selected photos (with a still dismal response, but at least I was getting 3 assignments for each response). By the end, only 1 assignment would be "seen" at a time even if 3 were clicked (and the other 2 would be translated into some random actions as iPhoto would scroll the keyword pane and assign a random keyword--not necessarily on the same side or the same position on the screen of the keywords I had actually clicked). The result? The functional response time tripled.
The product is not only much worse than iPhoto 5, it's unusably slow. Sadly, I've already upgraded. So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me:
    1) Is there any way to know officially if Apple is addressing this specific problem? I know other people are experiencing this and thought there would be a fix from Apple by now, but nothing.
    2) Is there any way to bail out of iPhoto 6 and go back to iPhoto 5? I know there's no official path, but (A) is there any unofficial path and (B) what would I lose?
    3) Since iPhoto 6 is the only iLife product I use, I feel especially ripped-off. What I'd really like to do is get a refund and pursue a different solution. Any thoughts there?

    Old Toad
Since I last wrote I have:
    * Rebuilt the directories with Disk Warrior. The problems I had were 30+ overlaps between iPhoto images and iTunes song files.
This got rid of the 8 minute responses, but performance was still unusably appalling.
    * I cleaned out the user caches with OnyX.
    No change in iPhoto performance.
    * I reinstalled iPhoto. (Because of the overlaps I also tried to reinstall iTunes but it doesn't have an obvious path for that. Given the number of hours I've already burned on this Apple problem I didn't have the fight in me for another one).
    No change.
    * Per another post in this forum I emptied iPhoto trash, then per Old Toad I rebuilt the iPhoto library with the first 3 options.
Noticeable improvement, but the performance is still dreadful.
    * Did a re-install and archive of OS X (per a friend's suggestion) and downloaded all the system updates anew.
    No improvement.
So after rebuilding my system from the directories up, re-installing iPhoto, and rebuilding the iPhoto library I'm "back to" 30 second to 3+ minute waits for everything when the Photo Info pane is active. For example, it takes 30-90 second waits for tasks such as:
    * changing a tab in the Photo Info pane
    * trying to scroll the Keywords tab of the Photo Info pane
    * assign 1 keyword to 1 photo
It takes 2-3+ minute waits for tasks such as:
    * scrolling the main window (one click in the scroll bar--not dragging) when the Photo Info pane is open
    * assigning 1 keyword to 36 photos
    * closing the Photo Info pane (AFTER however many minutes it took for the final commit i did before trying to exit)
    My observations:
    * When the ball is spinning on the screen, iPhoto doesn't "remember" what I do as other applications do, although the Keywords pane will occasionally scroll backward or forward--apparently randomly--in response to a single click anywhere in iPhoto. (And I'm not one of those people who bangs on the keyboard constantly when the computer is busy: I'm talking about a click that might get in before the ball starts spinning on the screen.)
    * The first "click" after opening the Photo Info Pane (either the Keywords tab or the first keyword box) is always "free"--no problem with excessively long waits. The second click after after a "free" click always has the burdensome wait times. Occasionally, though, in the first 3-5 clicks in the Photo Info pane the first click after what I'm assuming is a commit does not have the painful wait times. After those first 3-5 clicks, though, every click gets this excessive wait.
    * It seems odd to me how consistent the minimum wait is: right around 30 seconds. The click is either "free"--i.e. no perceptible wait time (or a reasonably minimal wait, given the task at hand)--or it's 30+ seconds.
These response times really do make the product unusable for me. Does anyone:
    1) Have any other suggestions?
    2) Know how I can find out whether this problem is being pursued by Apple?
    3) Know of any path out of the product so I can put myself out of my misery?………

  • Front Row Shared Photos unusably slow!

I have about 36,000 photos in iPhoto. When I share the library, and open it under Front Row, Shared Photos, it is just unusably slow! I have to wait about 5 minutes for the list to come up, even if I opened Front Row on the same machine as the iPhoto library. While this is happening, iPhoto is beach balled, and never becomes usable again, so I have to Force Quit it every time.
Any suggestions? I've already tried trashing the preferences file.

Follow iPhoto 6 and later: Rebuilding the iPhoto library and use the bottom 3 repair options.
It might also be helpful to remove Home > Library > Caches to the trash and restarting the computer.

  • Aperture 3 Unusably Slow on MacBook Pro?

Hi everyone, I have a Mid-2009 2.8 GHz MacBook Pro and a photo library of 61,000 photos. More of them are JPEG than RAW, but there is a lot of RAW in there. I have the masters stored on an external FW800 drive with the library itself on my internal HDD.
Aperture 3 is unusably slow. It takes probably close to a minute to load, freezes for five or ten seconds at a time when I ask it to do things, cannot display thumbnails as I scroll, etc., etc. It freezes a lot.
When it is doing almost anything, the whole system grinds to a halt. Finder is very slow. Mail has a hard time switching folders. Safari freezes between pages.
Yet: generally, Aperture's CPU usage is below 100% (e.g. just one core, not both), often at 60% or less even when working really hard (only occasionally tapping the second core). Disk i/o never seems to go over 6MB/s, yet the system almost feels like it would if the disk were too busy and couldn't work with the other apps.
Any idea what might be a miss? I've tried all kinds of different ideas and can't get the system to work well. It feels vastly (and I do mean vastly!) slower than iPhoto on my old PowerMac G5 2.7 GHz. I used Aperture 2 briefly, and I think it may have been a bit faster, but it too was really, really slow.
Using the 9600M doesn't seem to make much difference over the 9400M, incidentally.
Thoughts? I appreciate any help you can provide!
    Thanks,
    Tim

Turn on "Quick Preview" mode in Aperture when browsing on your laptop and you should not have any performance problems when rapidly browsing the library.
To understand what it is and how it works, see this:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=5%26sec tion=7%26tasks=true
The performance difference between iPhoto and Aperture has to do with a significant difference w.r.t. how they store adjusted images.
Neither app will destroy the original image you import from the camera. But that's about where the similarities end.
When you make an adjustment to an image in iPhoto, iPhoto makes a copy of the original. Also, iPhoto doesn't work in RAW -- only JPEG. It can read RAW but the moment you make an adjustment, it creates a copy which is a JPEG. Thus when you scan the library, you're really scanning copies of JPEGs. JPEGs are small and open quickly. Thus it seems to be quick & snappy. Unfortunately, it's not RAW and you lose the control you would have had doing a complete RAW workflow.
Aperture, doesn't actually make a copy at all. It just stores a list of instructions for all the adjustments you've made. When it opens an image you shot in RAW, it opens the RAW file and applies all the adjustments as the image opens (which takes significantly more processing power than merely opening a JPEG). This means it takes longer, but you have a true RAW workflow with all the power and control that goes along with it.
Aperture does create a couple of JPEG copies of your RAW images -- but if you're working in RAW it doesn't use them for any purpose other than rapid browsing of the library. Just turn on 'Quick Preview' mode and you'll have all the speed you enjoy in iPhoto. If you try to make an adjustment while Quick Preview mode is enabled, you'll notice the adjustments tab tells you that adjustments are disabled while in that mode. Fortunately you can toggle preview mode on & off very quickly.

  • IPhoto 08' Slow?

    Hi,
Is anybody finding iPhoto o8 slow?
I'm getting a lot of spinning wheel when selecting a photo to edit full screen and it stays really pixellated for several seconds becore becoming sharp on screen. I've got the latest update, 900 photos in this particular library, a 2.16ghz 24" Imac and 3gb of ram.

    Mark
Back up and try rebuilding the database. Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto.
If that fails, launch Activity Monitor ad watch for other processes using the cpu as you work.

  • Why is my iPhoto so slow?

Why is My Iphoto so slow when I open it a use it?   It takes forever to open and utilize.

    Because something's wrong?
There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on seven different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary from version to version and OS to OS. So before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.

  • Why is Help Viewer unusably slow?

This has *always* been true of Help Viewer in OS X, although in some versions, it was usable. In Lion, I find help unusably slow again.

I solved the problem by deleting Help Viewer cache files, according to these directions. It's not fast, but at least it's usable, and now each app displays its main help page in it.

  • IPhoto so slow it's unusable

    ARGH!!
Super fast PowerMac 2.8GHz dual quad core, OS 10.5.6, with 4GB ram and 340GB available on my hard drive...
And the frickin iPhoto (v 7.1.5 - latest update) is so glitchy and slow it's unusable.
I've turned off everything I can think of in the preferences. Even opening the preferences is maddeningly slow.

    Answer!!
Called Apple Support. Here's what they had me do:
create a temp folder on my desktop.
Move all the preferences from: user-me-library-preferences into the temp folder on my desktop.
    log out
    log in
    check that iPhoto works.
go to temp folder, move all those preferences BACK where they came from.
    DON'T REPLACE (apply to all).
    log out
    log in
    check that iPhoto works.
    It worked for me!!!
Leave the stuff that was in that temp folder. When you come across stuff that doesn't look right (like the dock, or the menu clock) put that preference back from the temp folder into the preferences folder, and DO replace. Check that iPhoto works (log out, log in). This way you can isolate which preference messed up iPhoto.

  • Aperture and iPhoto Running Slow Since Upgrading to Yosemite

IPhoto and Aperture is now running so slow it is nearly unusable.  It has an especially slow startup.  It was running just fine at first.  I had imported some Canon 5D (original) RAW files, and it has been grinding ever since.  I have tried deleting OS preferences and creating a new library.  Neither suggestion helped the situation.  This happened just a couple of days after the Yosemite update.  I have added all of the latest patches.  I am running it on a very recent MacBook pro.
I rely on this software heavily, so if it is not fixed soon, I will have to switch to Lightroom.
    Thanks,
    Chris

As kq6up mentioned you should try to repair your iPhoto/Aperture library. You can do this by holding down the option-key and the command-key simultaneously as you are launching iPhoto/Aperture. You will get some options to try out.
If that doesn't help, I would recommend using iPhoto Library Manager from Fat Cat Software that looks for duplicates and old thumbnails from previous versions of iPhoto. It should be able to fix Aperture libraries as well. I managed to clean up nearly 40 GB off from my 110 GB library using it and with prog99 tip iPhoto runs blazingly fast again.

  • Iphoto 09 slow in Library photos pane

Here is a challenging one that I cannot figure out.
I upgrade to Iphoto 9. When I am in the Library photos pane, it is very slow and slow to react. It comes to a crawl and the beachball shows up very often. At times it is unusable. When I go to events or anywhere else, it functions ok.
I rebuilt my library, I upgraded my RAM to 2 Gbs and have 50Gbs of free disk space. This does not help.

    Scott
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums, events and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • IPhoto 6 slow to open and close

I have a mac mini with an external drive connected via firewire. IPhoto 6 works really fast on the mac mini...no problems. I just got a new MacBook Pro and can mount the external drive...no problem.
When I open iphoto and point to the iPhoto library on the external drive, it takes forever to open. Once it is open, it is a bit sluggish, but works OK. Then it takes forever to close as well.
I didn't think the speed over Airport was that slow....am I wrong? Why the slowdown on the MacBook Pro and the mac mini is really fast? Thought it would be the other way around.
I called Apple Care and they had me reinstall Tiger...nothing changed. Please help. Thanks.

    Brent:
From the posts I've read about it accessing large data files like images over Airport is going to be rather slow. Close all of the rolls before closing and then see if that improves the closing and opening process. There's just a lot of data that has to be transferred.
Do check the Airport forum as there may be some tricks available that will help speed up the process.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
